Malmsteen done it again!!.......2007-05-14
Anyone who loves classical music will love this! The quality of this DVD is outstanding, giving good shots of Yngwie and the rest of the concert. Can't wait for no 2 to be released - Yngwie you've done it again - the best!
A SHINING EXAMPLE OF MUSICAL PROWESS!!!!.......2005-07-15
Those of you out there who enjoy great guitar playing should definitely check this out! This is definitely not yngwie's typical stage performance though. He really focuses his strengths and passions for the instrument on this dvd. I enjoyed this dvd immensely, and felt it was worth about $30 dollars. Shop around and you may get it for that price. I suggest to all of you out there who want a little less "hair metal yngwie" and more skilled/less gaudy material to check this out. This dvd is for the U.S. formats but for some reason the few interview segments seem to be in either japanese or korean. THE REST IS GOOD THOUGH!! I should also add that the editing is not nearly as painful as some of his other dvd releases. Sound quality seems adequate as well..
A True Concerto for Electric Guitar.......2004-01-09
As he himself explains it on the DVD, this is a concerto in the classical sense. It is not an attempt to marry rock with orchestra as in Deep Purple, Metallica and scores of other acts. Unlike these other acts, Malmsteen takes on the role of a soloist in the orchestra, just like a violinist or pianist does. One preceding exception might be Steve Vai's performance with a symphony orchestra (which I did not see) going back to 1996.
What strikes me most is his intense use of the first three fingers. His fourth finger comes into play when called for. But not all four fingers hover over the fretboard all of the time. His reach is phenomenal, especially playing and stretching between the first fret and the fifth fret! Apart from the requisite talent and hard work, those with shortish fingers need not even try.
His picking technique incorporates all that is minimalist. Except for a few gestures of showmanship, there is no unnecessary movement (and hence time wasted). There are probably very few guitarists alive today who can play this concerto effortlessly. Just like several famous violin concertos written in the last two centuries that when premiered, they were beyond the capability of most violinists of the time.
This is not for all malmsteens fans- appriciated! - worth!.......2003-12-07
i bought this dvd . i liked all malmsteens albums so i couldnt ignore this dvd.
i cant tell you anything negetive word about his music and definitely i cant tell you negetive word about " concerto suite for electric guitar and orchestra in e flat minor live concert with the new japan philharmonic or the czech orchestra played on his cd.
i bought also his albums ( his two versions of them - the rock version and the classical vesion - both the same music ( The first 6 tracks (special the first "icarus dream fanfare" and the 10th ("vivace") are awsome and the next were so so) ; but this live performance with the japan philharmonic added great tracks as " blitzkrieg , far beyond the sun trilogy suits op.5 the first movement , brother , evil eye ( special feature and the openning (with the orchestra only )- - " black star oventure" . Malmsteen composed classical piece and performed by full orchestra .good dvd but not for all malmsteens fans out there. it took me time until i accepted this classical project. the great thing - all music composed by yngwie , awesome performance but sometimes malmsteens carries us to classical direction with exaggeration way ( like " presto vivace" and the sound is only "pcm stereo" so i gave this dvd 4.5 stars only .
i thank malmsteen for his 3 dvds i have ( including this) and i hope that he will give us more dvds like this or like his 1998 live concert or his live performance dvd at budokan.i have all malmsteens cd's and i appreciate his music . interesting and appreciated !
YNGWIE IS SIMPLY AMAZING WITH FULL ORCHESTRA.......2003-11-15
Yngwie Malmsteen plays like a Wild Beast possessed of Satan himself on Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor LIVE with the New Japan Philharmonic!! I cannot remember having witnessed such emotional and technical precision as I did on this DVD! Watching it, you are struck with images of seeing the unbelievable. Is this a man like myself, or a god? And if a man, how could he play so well? Surely he must've sold his soul to the Devil in order to play in this advanced manner. I've never seen such a mind boggling display of mastery over one's instrument. Nicolo Paginni himself would have a hard time keeping up with Yngwie this time around. Beginning with he Black Star Overture and then going through the entire Concerto score by memory including several bonus songs, with note-for-note perfection is such a joy to hear. It sounds so full and alive; soulful. Technically, the tone on his vintage Stratocaster is full and warm with plenty of sustain. The volume of his guitar blends in great with the orchestra and seems to get louder as the concert gets going. The orchestra is very good; they compliment Yngwie extremely well and never falter. This is so good that I wouldn't be surprised if it is shown on PBS one of these days. The only thing I didn't like was the tone of his acoustic guitar which he used on a couple of the songs. It has nylon strings and in my humble opinion, couldn't handle the speed and attack of Yngwie's playing. The audience could care less as it roars its approval after every song. You won't be disappointed when you see him playing the chops, sweeps and runs that have made him famous. The camera angles are good with a great many closeups of Yngwie's fingers on the fretboard. You won't miss a thing. The orchestra is shown periodically as is the audience which added a nice touch. All told there are eighteen songs which includes bonus material and lengthy interviews of Yngwie, including his entire chronological history. Yngwie, this is your Magnum Opus as far as I'm concerned. You have done what every other rock act has attempted to do since Deep Purple in 1969, combine rock with classical. You have discovered the Philosophers Stone; the Holy Grail. With alchemy at your fingertips you have turned everything you touch into gold and silver. If this were the 1600's you'd probably be stoned for being so damn good. I salute you Yngwie Malmsteen.
