Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clearance to Run the Interference.......2007-03-26

In some of my other music DVD reviews, I take the tact of applying a set of standards to a release and establishing how the DVD in question measures up. Let me say in advance that when I take this tact, it usually means that I was disappointed in the release, but this would be only slightly true with Rage Against The Machine's Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium.

A memo should go out to all bands and music DVD producers that says at minimum: "1) Music DVD's should be produced to the highest standards. 2) The musical performances within should represent the talent that made the studio recorded CDs sell. 3) Theatrics are very cool too, as long as you can pull them off without deterioration in the quality of the music."

Let's break it down then for Rage's Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium:

1 - "Music DVD's should be produced to the highest standards." - The picture quality in Rage's Live at the GOA is fair at best. I think this is due to a combo of two things: Old technology was used to film the performance, and there is a deliberate use of a technique that makes the picture a bit grainy. This grainy effect is hardly noticeable on a standard def TV, but it's very noticeable on a high def plasma TV. Seemingly, the band and the director chose to deliver what they felt was some kind of "atmospheric production" versus giving the viewer a front row seat to the performance. Hence, the relatively poor picture takes a bit away from the DVD.

On the other hand, the visual doesn't jump all over the place every 2 seconds as is true with way too many music DVDs (for some reason the notion all too often is that changing the visual projects the energy of a song...and that's a stupid notion). The camera shots in Rage's Live at the GOA mostly give you a nice long look at each performer at the right time; if you were actually at the show, you'd probably be looking at the performer that the camera is on. This made for a viewing experience that enhanced the illusion of having a front row seat to the show.

The sound is great in Dolby 5.1. You get your choice between Stereo and Dolby 5.1. Dolby 5.1 is far superior even when listening on a stereo system. My home theater Surround system in 5.1 made it feel like I was at the show. When I tried stereo on my portable DVD player the bass was mixed way too high and the sound was distorted; this was instantly remedied by switching to 5.1.

2 - "The musical performances within should represent the talent that made the studio recorded CDs sell." - The guys prior to hitting the stage must have huddled and committed to each other to go out and play the music true to the studio versions of the songs. All of the tracks on Rage's Live at the GOA are performed precisely. Absolutely amazing.

Tom Morello is incredible. Morello is ranked in the top half of Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". And particularly his solo in Bulls on Parade is often noted by Guitar World and other music magazines; it was awesome to see him precisely pull off live the magic sounds he makes with a guitar that you might think he could only make in the studio.

The band gives you all of the songs that you'd really want to hear:

1. Bulls On Parade
2. Bombtrack
3. Calm Like A Bomb
4. Bullet In The Head
5. Sleep Now In The Fire
6. War Within A Breath
7. I'm Housin'
8. Killing In The Name
9. Born Of A Broken Man
10. No Shelter
11. Guerrilla Radio
12. How I Could Just Kill A Man (w/guest Cypress Hill)
13. Kick Out The Jams
14. Testify
15. Freedom

Bonus material includes:

"People of the Sun" and "Know Your Enemy"
The 2000 Democratic National Convention performance, featuring:
"Bulls On Parade"
"Testify"
"Guerrilla Radio"
"Sleep Now In The Fire"
"Freedom"
"Killing In The Name"
And video clips for "How I Could Just Kill a Man" and "Bombtrack"

The Grand Olympic Auditorium main performance is fabulous. The bonus material, especially the performance at the 2000 DNC, is interesting to watch and much more politically oriented than performance oriented.

3 - "Theatrics are very cool too, as long as you can pull them off without deterioration in the quality of the music." - There are no over-the-top theatrics...which is great. The guys just play the music, and as I said earlier, they perform the songs to perfection. There is a clear air on the stage that "this is our last show together". These guys all click and tonight they are clicking on all cylinders.

Zack de la Rocha's (and the band's) political message is highly visible (and audible) throughout. During the show Rage and de la Rocha voice their extremist support for revolutionary socialism that includes a sweeping condemnation of the police and corporations. Um...yikes! I can't say that I'm a fan of Rage's message, but their music rocks! And the show recorded on Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium also rocks.

All in all...Live at the GOA is a shouldn't-miss DVD if you like or ever liked Rage Against the Machine. But so much for this recording being their last performance; a 2007 reunion has been announced. Perhaps we'll get an upgraded high def performance DVD to rally 'round the family with.

3 out of 5 stars get mexico city instead.......2007-03-25

this concert dvd blows compared to mexico city.

(1) you can tell the party is over / they don't have their usual energy

(2) bass is mixed too high

(3) Know Your Enemy not on here

enough said.

3 out of 5 stars RATM - okay but not great.......2007-02-13

My 15 year old was somewhat disappointed about this DVD. Somehow she expected it to be more "dynamic" and to give more a feel of being there at the concert (a tall order for sure). Since the DVD didn't do this, she's giving it an average rating.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-07-09

I like Audioslave, but have listened to little of Rage Against the Machine. I checked out their first CD, but I wasn't used to the way Zack De La Rocha's vocals sounded and I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics. A couple weeks ago I heard the song "Bulls on Parade" for the first time and decided to check out their concert DVD. For 75 minutes they play the Grand Olympic Auditorium and they f**king rock. These guys are great live. But it is a great amount of talent; Zack De La Rocha has very political views and lyrics, and raps them to a rock background. He's got a great stage presence and clearly knows how to put on a show. Tom Morello is an amazing guitarist, he does stuff with his guitar that some of the best guitar players ever can't. Tim Commerford is a killer bassist, he cranks out some really great basslines. And Brad Wilk's drumming is fairly simple stuff actually, but he makes it work. The only songs I had heard (out of the ones they were performing)
were Bulls on Parade, Bombtrack, and How I Could Just Kill a Man, but I found that I liked every song they did. This is a great concert DVD (although the camera work jumps around a little to quickly at times), even if you just kind of like RATM, you should check this out.

3 out of 5 stars At least its not Audioslave........2006-01-12

Rage Against the Machine, even in their worst moments, was still a very explosive band. This show is fair, but if you've seen them live in 1993 or 94', you'll won't like this much. Zach's voice is too worn out, Tom's guitaring isn't heavy enough, and Tim's bass lines are too loud.

The song selection is only from the "hits" on their three albums, you won't get to hear underrated classics such as "Settle for Nothing, "Fistful of Steel," "Take the Power Back," and "Township Rebellion." Plus, Tom's creativity on stage is gone, the solos in his songs sound the same as if you were listening to the albums, but back in the day he did alot of crazy s*** when he had to solo. For example, in "Killing in the Name," in the middle of the first chorus of "Some of those who work forces...," Tom would make a shrieking noise like in "Freedom," and his solo for the song sounded really different and f***ed up compared to the studio recording. At least there's a video of "Bombtrack" and after seeing the performance, it doesn't hurt as much that they broke up, but Audioslave is far far far far worse, so this is lightyears better than "Live in Cuba" from Audios***.

If you want to hear that perticular version of "Killing in the Name" I was talking about, get their self-titled DVD and watch that live video clip. Hell, get that DVD because its so great.

If you want a live Rage' DVD thats way better, hunt on eBay for a bootleg DVD called "Live in Philly 1993," which is basically them performing at a nightclub and they only played classic Rage' tracks. The video and sound quality is a little bad, but the band's show was AMAZING.

Let boring people watch boring stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Loud and Full on.......2006-11-10

This is an awesome collection of load and full on performances from one of the most intense bands around.

Sound quality isn't the best sounds like it was recorded from a mic rather than off the desk but other than that a really good dvd. Sounds best through a massive stereo/surround system with subs!

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Rage' fan, nothing crappy here........2005-07-06

Rage Against the Machine's self-titled DVD kicks Audioslave's self-titled DVD right in the ass in both quality and quantity. There's fifteen clips alltogether. Ten live performances, five music videos, and a really moving poem by Zach de la Rocha called "Memory of the Dead." The two best live performances are of "Zapata's Blood" and "Killing in the Name." Luckily, they chose a video clip of "Killing in the Name" from the "old-school Rage'" phase, as it includes Zach's grunts in the song (like in the studio recording) and cooler sounding guitar solos from the guitar wizard Tom Morello. The only bad performance was of "Bombtrack" as it had that stupid "whammy peddle" solo instead of the cool one you'd hear on the studio recording. "Bullet in the Head," "People of the Sun," "Tire Me," "Bulls on Parade," and "Vietnow" were stunning.

Now to the music videos. None of them are censored. "Killing in the Name" is just a collection of old video clips back when Rage' was just a garage band. "Bullet in the Head" was from a BBC performance. "Freedom" was the best video as it showed everything about the false accusations of Leonard Peltier.

I can keep going but trust me, you'll love this, and you'll see why Rage' was one of the best live acts ever.

5 out of 5 stars Rage at their best..........2004-12-23

If you like Rage, and even if you dont, this is a must see. They are at top form here, and i have watched this over and over again. The only slight problem i have is the visual effects, but its not bad. But overall it is an amazing live film and from the opening song "bulls on parade" to the closing song of "freedom" the entire thing is great.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most explosive rock visuals ever..........2004-11-24

I said "..one of" in my headline but the truth of the matter is that this one might actually top them all. RATM's live performances were legendary by any standard one sets and this DVD does capture to a very satisfying degree their unique talent and spirit.

Filmed on a world wide tour, this is RATM at their very peak musically and as a band. Their chemistry is absolutely stunning, their music is at its most fueled drive and the band performs it with a vengeance unparallel and almost impossible to top.

For those unlucky enough not to have witnessed one of rock's greatest bands live this DVD will more than compensate for that loss (if that could be said at all). Having said that, I'm not a big fan of live music DVDs but this one is a very special case and those who do go for the DVD format in music will easily attest to that.

It's a nice collector's item as well as it offers the "Ghost of Tom Joad" maxi with it, a song which happens to be a gem when performed live by RATM.

Coming to the performances themselves, aside of their incredible quality there's been a very good job made in capturing some funny or visually impressive moments from their concerts and this definately counts to the extras. De La Rocha's antics on the stage are to cherish and watching him show why some consider him the best rock frontman ever is addicting.

Legendary stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Best, But Worthy..........2006-09-26

The now defunct Rage Against the Machine (all members except vocalist Zack De La Rocha can be found in Audioslave) put out four albums and three DVD's in their 8-year career. I've heard (and loved) all the albums and after seeing this, I've seen 2 DVD's. The other one I saw was the one that was at The Grand Olympic Auditorium, Rage's last show. This was put out not long before that...The performances are better on the other DVD, this DVD is better for Bonus Features and you get to see (a little) what the band is like offstage and out of the studio. Out of the 4 band members, you hear the most from Zack de la Rocha. I think if you've ever listened to his lyrics, you realize the dude is smart. Hearing him speak and interview people (as well as the intercut documentary sequence included during the concert) you realize he's really smart AND he knows what he's talking about. Tom Morello (guitarist) is a Harvard graduate and also appears to be pretty smart. The other members Brad Wilk (drums) and Tim Commerford (drums), don't speak that much. Well, Wilk doesn't. Commerford doesn't say anything anywhere. The show is great, everyone's in top-form as far as performances...But Zack delays some of his vocals a little bit. For people who don't know what I mean...Instead of "The microphone explodes, shattering the molds" it's "The microphone (inhales), shattering da...Molds."

5 out of 5 stars Pure Rage.......2006-04-11

RATM is one of the greatest bands ever. It's not even debatable. I miss them, their music, and their message. This is of course a must have for any Rage fan. I can't find anything bad to say about this dvd or anything Rage put out. I highly recommend you pick this up if you don't own it.
By the way, this dvd is NOT out of print. There are some sellers, here on Amazon, who are trying to rip off us Rage fans by charging $45 and up for this dvd. Those sellers should know that this dvd can be found, BRAND NEW, for 13 bucks or less. Don't believe me? Check out pricegrabber. Note to those sellers: just because Amazon doesn't carry this dvd, does NOT mean it's out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Good RATM DVD, But Not The Best!!!!!.......2006-02-23

This is a very good DVD of RATM. The song selections are good. The video shots are clear and closeup. The song selection includes Calm Like A Bomb, Bulls On Parade, and Killing In The name of. I have just two concerns about this DVD, and I think that anyone who plans on purchasing it should be made aware. First, the DVD has "freeze frames" inserted periodically throughout the video. It is hard to explain but the best way I can try is that it looks as though the DVD is scratched and skipping. This does not effect the sound, it took a few times of watching to get used to. It's just some video trick used after production, a type of enhancement. It just doesn't work well with a live show like RATM. The second problem I have is with the sound on Bulls On Parade. All of the other songs except this one seemed to be mixed great. The vocals on Bulls on Parade are almost nonexistant and are what an engineer would call "at the back of the mix". In other words the music is way to loud for the vocals and therefore are drowned out. Other than that this is an good DVD. If I didn't own any RATM DVDs, I would suggest getting one of the others first.

5 out of 5 stars Live is Best.......2005-10-05

RATM fan or not, the intensity and energy this band gives off in their live performances is undeniable. It is this same energy and intensity that initially drew me to them, wheich led to learning more about the substance of their messages, which led to an understanding of other views and opinions previously foreign to me. The live footage in this DVD in Mexico City is incredible, and the additional featurettes can open your mind to what they're about. Good stuff.

It's only a documentary, people talking about them and nothing else, there's no music. Son think before do anything in only you like the music.

1 out of 5 stars NO MUSIC, <1 min interview with Tom Morello.......2000-07-02

This DVD is basically an interview with people who are Rage fans. No Music. No concert footage. There is less than 1 minute of an interview with Tom Morello. That's it. No Zack. No Brad. No YTimK. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Rip-Off on Rage.......2000-05-15

Anytime you make a documentary about a band, the least you should do is get their permission. This title fails to do so and it doesn't even provide any useful information about the band. There is no live footage, none of rage's music, and only about 30 seconds footage of Tom Morello in an interview. None of the other band members are even interviewed. It only shows still photos while rip-off rage music is played in the background. Don't buy this, I wish I hadn't.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled.......2000-04-25

I thought this was going to be another excellent piece of RATM concert footage, but it's flat out, an interview with people like you and me who like the band. Don't be fooled, this video has no LIVE FOOTAGE what so ever.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - THE BATTLE OF MEXICO CITY - No Regional Coding - Playable on All DVD Players Worldwide - Limited Asian Collector's Edition - Songs: Testify, Guerilla Radio, People of the Sun, Calm Like a Bomb, Sleep Now in the Fire, Born of a Broken Man, Bombtrack, Know Your Enemy, No Shelter, War Within a Breath, Bulls on Parade, Killing in the Name, Zapata's Blood, Freedom. Outside Mexico City's Sports Pavilion, hundreds of young Rage fans rattle metal fences and throw rocks at the increasingly nervous police. Inside, a seething crowd of 5,000 lucky ticket holders cram into the cavernous pavilion chanting anti-government slogans and poking their middle fingers into the thick, sweaty air while waiting for Rage Against the Machine to storm the stage. One of the greatest live acts in music history, Rage only affirms that fact with this show. Whatever club, theater, arena, or stadium they're in, the opening of each Rage Against the Machine show always feels like a grenade has gone off. But this night it was as if a truckful of bombs blew up as the band tore into the opening salvo of "Testify." Fans cascaded toward the stage like rippling waves stopping only to pogo up-and-down like jackhammers. Longtime supporters of various political causes in Mexico, Rage were performing for the very first time in Mexico City. The connection between the band and the audience is electric. From the early "all hell can't stop us now" chant in "Guerilla Radio" to the blood-curling screams in the finale of "Freedom," there is an urgency at this show that is unrivaled. This is live rock & roll as it's meant to be heard: fierce, funky, uncompromising. This is Rage Against the Machine in their finest hour. 68 minutes. Zack de la Rocha, vocals; Y.tim.K, bass; Brad Wilk, drums; Tom Morello, guitars. <2002 Universal Music, Singapore>
