The answer is, of course, Morrissey. Released in conjunction with Live From Earl's Court, Who Put the M in Manchester documents a different performance and set list. That said, both concerts were in support of You Are the Quarry and include a healthy dose of Smiths material. On the DVD, Morrissey is in fine voice and good spirits--and why not? He isn't just in front of a home audience, but May 22nd was his birthday (as he jokes, "I can't believe I'm 29"). The rest of the solo tracks, like "Hairdresser on Fire" and "Everyday is Like Sunday," are mostly drawn from Viva Hate. Bonus features include four videos and another live Manchester set from 2004. Those looking for a career retrospective may be disappointed as his last few albums are largely ignored. For the Morrissey fanatic, however, the hyperbole of the title is likely to be fully justified. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars The makings of a legend..........2007-06-17

The devotion and adoration of Morrissey is clearly displayed during the performance of "Everyday is like Sunday" : Struggling fans are in constant mode to get close to this idol. One young man in the front, while being restrained by two security chaps, makes eye contact with Morrissey, with arm fully stretched; the camera shows the tormented man's face "Please,Please...". Accomodating Morrissey works past the guards to help him. Managing a split-second, euphoric touch/handshake the fan then points to Morrissey (you're the man, you're the man!)The many surrounding audience witness to this accomplishment give full cheers as the victor is carried away.
Maybe this scene is repeated at every concert, but it really makes the video complete for me.
Morrissey at 47: misunderstood as ever but will be worshipped to the end of time by the ones who know. Viva Hate

5 out of 5 stars Mancunian crooner lives on.......2007-03-08

The former Smiths leader is aging well (musically, at least) and is writing as well as he ever has done during his solo career. His lyrics are still politically edgy, as witnessed in the Far Off Places sequence, "if your god bestows protection upon you, and if the U. S. A. doesn't bomb you". The setting for this video is utterly appropriate. What better way to celebrate his birthday than a return to adoring Manchester fans? I found the brief interview with a couple who had travelled from San Diego for the occasion particularly poignant. I'm personally not that rabid, though I did fly to San Francisco to see him for the first time, all those years ago. The set is a lovely mix of old and new with plenty of Smiths tunes. One could easily argue he sings old Smith stuff better than ever, and he's certainly smoother. Smooth isn't exactly what the Smiths were a about though, is it? Anyway, Who Put the M in Manchester is probably the best live recording in recent memory and a must have for die hard fans. Even the teenagers, who are somehow compelled to argue he's nothing since the death of the Smiths, will find plenty to like.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-08-14

I'm not nearly as much of a Morrissey fan as some of the devoted followers you will see interviewed on this DVD but I do really enjoy the Smiths and Morrissey's solo work. It's a shame that the US doesn't encourage truly creative musicians like Morrissey. So, we are tortured by pop icons that dole out mindless junk...but I digress. Morrissey is in top form here and the quality of the production is perfect. Great sound ( except for the 2nd section from Move). That's mostly for the fans who might have been at that concert. Morrissey's vocals on that segment are given equal volume as the crowd, who sings along... every word on every song! Quite a tribute to his popularity but not worth watching more than once. The camera work from the first concert is perfect. Great editing and camera angles with no cheesy effects. A fitting tribute to a great artist.

4 out of 5 stars Question.......2006-06-04

Morrissey performed "No One Can Hold A Candle To You" on the DVD. He claimed in the concert he was covering the song and quizzed the crowd after his performance as to who originally performed it. Does anyone know?
