3 Way Grounded.......2007-05-19
This is not a good representation of John Scofield. I felt the Amazon hype was very misleading on this DVD. I may have actually seen it in the past, but bought it anyway. Uninspired, workaday renditions of familiar, if not favorite tunes.
Proves a point.......2007-02-25
John Scofield deliberately chooses to play in every possible situation to earn his title as virtuoso. He can carry any band and at the same time share the spotlight. He earned his wings with Miles Davis and shows that genuis was not lost on him. Now he is a player in his own right and this presentation solidifies his place in guitar history. He is comfortable in any style and is a student of his instrument. I'm sure he never stops learning and continues to hone his craft. This is a must for any guitar fan and will diversify any collection.
oh yeah!.......2007-02-07
I was really getting this for the quartet - but too bad there's no Bill Stewart... but those tracks are still nice, and not much Sco/Lovano available on DVD. What really knocked me out was the organ trio /Don Pullen - really "smokinnnn" - Confirmation - They sound great! These tracks alone are 5 Star.
Anybody not familiar w Sco's blues roots will appreciate the duos w Dr John.
sensual,soulful,searching,scorching,awesome.......2006-04-15
i must concur with my friend above . this is a supurb evening with john and friends . the sound and picture are really excellent . i recall seeing john and his working quartet (joe lovano, dennis irwin and bill stewart) circa "what we do" visit new smyrna beach . john's parents lived nearby and he and the fellas had just come down from new york city . the quartet songs performed here can be heard on several sco projects including "flat out" , "meant to be" and his first blue note record "time on my hands". the duets remind me of john's work with mccoy tyner on the project "things ain't what they used to be" (blue note) intimate , bluesy and lovely . to have also performed a couple songs with the remarkable marvin smith and don pullen make for a truly mind bending evening of creative collaberation . an absolute must have for jazz guitar fans and sco fans and deep musician lovers . what a discovery .
Scofield Does It Yet Again! Great Concert DVD!.......2005-02-05
Not many jazz DVDs come out that feature players that I have interest in. When I heard John Scofield was going to release an older concert DVD, I was thrilled. This DVD was filmed in 1990 at the Chelsea in New York City.
I want to first talk about the sound quality: it's simply put....superb. Incredible instrument seperation and the clarity of overall audio is suprisingly good considering that this concert was shot 15 years ago. The picture is also suprisingly good. It's nice and clear, and though it's a little milky. It's still great quality for 1990.
Then there are the performances, Scofield performs in three different settings: the first set is him in trio with Don Pullen on Hammond B-3 Organ and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums. I love this trio setting because it really captures a different side of Scofield. My hats are off the late, great Don Pullen (whom I found out died), because what he did on the organ is astounding. Not only did he play the leads and the rhythms, but he played the bass using bass pedals all at the same time, thus resulting in a very full sound. I just couldn't believe it.
The second set is Scofield in duet with Dr. John. They perform some blues songs and really is a nice contrast to the heavily jazzed first set.
The third and final set, which is my favorite, is with a quartet. This quartet features Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone, Anthony Cox on bass, and John Reilly on drums. This set is amazing as this group pulls out all the stops with some mind-blowing jazz. John Scofield really cuts loose in this set.
Anyone who's a fan or potential fan of John Scofield's please do yourself a favor and pick this up. You don't want to miss out on these performances.
