A souvenir from the 2001 Rock in Rio festival, this set proves that Iron Maiden not only are among the elite heavy-metal purveyors of all time but can still shred onstage with the best of them. The British sextet holds its audience of a quarter-million in thrall for two hours, opening with a pummeling "Wicker Man" and wending its way through nearly three decades of hard-rocking tales of the mythic and supernatural: "The Mercenary," "The Trooper," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Number of the Beast," and ending with the ubiquitous "Run for the Hills." Concert footage was edited by bassist Steve Harris; obviously attuned to his band's rhythms, he ensures the visuals are as in-your-face as the music. A second disc spends 50 minutes showing band members doing non-rock & roll things offstage, like vocalist Bruce Dickinson's predilection for fencing and flying planes. A short "Day in the Life" featurette, brief group interviews, and the band's photographer Ross Halfin's photo diary round out the bonus disc. --Kevin Filipski

Taped in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the final night of Rush's 2002 Vapor Trails tour, this double-disc set finds Canada's famous power trio giving its all for 40,000 of the most rabid Rush fans ever gathered under one sky. Sure, the guys are all pushing 50. Bassist-vocalist Geddy Lee strains to hit some high notes, and guitar wizard Alex Lifeson occasionally sounds a tad bored. But by and large they remain at or near the peak of their powerful game--and, from the looks of it, they're having more fun than ever. Drawing from 15 of their 17 studio albums and leaning heavily on Vapor Trails, they celebrate their stylistic range (progressive-leaning classic rock to dense but melodic post-grunge) and the far broader scope of drummer Neil Peart's considered lyrics.

The concert alone pushes three hours, and disc 2 offers a lengthy documentary and multi-angle options for three songs. The Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 sound quality is generally good, if overly compressed. Peart's drums sound fabulous, in fact: splashy and tight and far more natural than they've sounded on any Rush album, live or otherwise, in years. Not to be missed--and needlessly hard to find--is a 1975 promotional clip for Fly by Night's "Anthem." This set is a must, even for the doubtful. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars Want goose bumps?.......2007-06-30

Get this. Period.

I never saw Rush live. Oh, I've listened to them over the years but, only bought one CD of theirs. However, I have to ask myself now....what have I been missing?

These guys pull off an amazing feat here playing to a fanatical crowd of 40,000. They eat it up and work with the crowd to create a truly superb live concert DVD. The energy is just amazing. Like I said "want goose bumps?" Watch Geddy smile as he thumps his bass in front of that sea of crazed fans. On YYZ and Spirit of the Radio there are some amazing shots (albeit quick ones) of the crowd as a wave of people pulsing as Geddy is framed to the side. Just makes your hairs stand up. Also, when the beginning synth and drums start Tom Sawyer you can almost feel the band getting a shot of adrenaline as the crowd lets it be known that they are not going to be denied as the 4th member of Rush on this night!

Neil Peart is all business as he demonstrates why he is arguably the best rock drummer of the past 25 years. Alex Lifeson does what he does with equal aplomb. I mean, in 3 piece bands there are NO slackers people!

This DVD has me revisiting Rush. I always appreciated them as virtuosos (and they are indeed) but, it's never too late to go back and grab all you can of this great band. The analogy of a fine wine is often overused but it's obvious Rush deserves to be on anyone's top shelf.

Listen up young guns. Watch Rush school you on what it takes. A most deserved 5 stars from me.

3 out of 5 stars RUSH Rocks! But once again ..........2007-05-14

Hello once again, RUSH fans! Too much camera work on the audience. Needed more focus on RUSH! Overall. Good. Buy it! DVD. Once again peeps, tc. Be safe!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome !!!!.......2007-05-13

I don't have words for describe it. It was unforgetable.

4 out of 5 stars Rush, "Live" from Rio!! (4.5 Stars).......2007-04-19

Anticipating Rush's "Snakes and Arrows" release in May of 2007, I recently viewed this concert again for the 2nd time, and became "re"-enamored with the magic of Rush in Rio. Though this is not the latest and greatest of live DVDs for Rush (See R30), this one has its own merits:

The band and stage crew overcame major difficulties due to torrential rains, had to skip the soundcheck and still pulled off a magnificent showing. Give credit where credit is due, even though there were a few sound problems evident at the beginning. This also was the largest Rush show in quite some time -- when was the last time that Rush played to 40,000 fans?

The DVD and CDs to this concert, a.k.a. Vapor Trails Tour, were both outstanding. I saw the equivalent of this at the PNC Bank Arts Center in 7/2002 and it was well-represented on DVD.

In all honesty, however, I did feel that the constant camera panning in the first 30 minutes was enough to make anyone dizzy while watching this. There was way too much shifting back and forth of camera angles amongst the trio and it became evident that this was too big of a stage to get one steady and constant view. Also, too many views from the top of Neil Peart's kit, rather than in front and some key footage was missed when he was doing some of his best fancy "hand-and-foot" work.

Overall, it was a real gift to see some of these songs in concert for the first time, e.g. "Natural Science", "Leave That Thing Alone", "The Pass", "Ghost Rider". The video effects and light show in this venue were outstanding.

All-in-all, this one is great (4.5 stars and almost makes 5) but not as good as R30 on DVD. If you are a Rush fan, of course, you will need to have both.

Also, as a special note of interest, this is the first modern tour (not first in their chronological history) to be released on DVD by Rush. As seen in Rush Replay X3, the Exit Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure and A Show of Hands tours were released last June as part of a 3-DVD set; these were tours that happened in the '80s.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best yet!.......2007-01-18

I have yet to see a bad Rush concert, but this 2003 performance filmed in Rio is a cut above all the other shows I've watched both on video and in person. The band chose one of the best set lists imaginable. Every Rush classic is contained here, including great surprises like "YYZ," and "Natural Science." They also included some of the best tracks from 2002's Vapor Trails. And the fan response is amazing as the band create an energetic show like a force gone wild, proving that master musicians like Rush have a lasting impact on their audience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 666 The Number of the Beast.......2007-06-01

1. The Wicker Man: Excellent way to start off a concert, with brlliant light effects. 5/5

2. Ghost of the Navigator: Probably Steve's highlight, and a good job he did too. 5/5

3. Brave New World: Starts off excellent, and the first verse is even better. However Bruce made a slight mistake in the second verse. 4/5

4. Wrathchild: My favourite headbanger. Awesome, and the crowd are brilliant. 6/5

5. 2 Minutes to midnight: My second favourite on here, particularly the intro and chorus are brilliant. Verses are also more than excellent, and the song just couldt have been made better. 8/5

6. Blood Brothers: Never really has been a great favourite, but it wasn't a bad attempt. 4/5

7. Sign of the Cross: Vastly underrated by Maiden, and should have stayed a classic. Awesome performance, even the really long instrumental bit is done well. 6/5

8. The Mercenary: A classic live, and probably wont ever be this good again. The best for stunts, this is one of the fastest songs they ever wrote. 5/5

9. The Trooper: Not one of the best, but still awesome. Bruce waves the Britain flag while he isnt singing. 5/5

10. Dream of Mirrors: The worst song on the DVD, but still not bad. 3.5/5

11. The Clansman: The audience are brilliant in this song, and the freedom cry is one of the best things on the DVD. 5/5

12. The Evil that Men Do: You wont be disappointed by this. Best bit is when Janick Gers fights Eddie with his guitar, and at the end of the song Eddie walks away. 6/5

13. Fear of the Dark: Awesome live, as always. A lot of the song Bruce doesn't even need to sing, because the audience do it for him. Even that doesn't make the song worse. 6/5

Now we near the end...

14. Iron Maiden: Guitaring is very unusual because the band do someting to totally change the style. At the end, Bruce goes inside an Iron Maiden, and then he reappears just before the next song. 6/5

15. The Number of the Beast: My classic favourite, but i love this version lots. Bruce does sound a bit weak on the vocals, but it puts effect to make the song better. Nothing better than this! 12/5

16. Hallowed be Thy Name: Excellent vocals and guitaring, sand thats all i have to say. 5/5

17. Sanctuary: I dont see the point in giving this less just because of the audience. The audience didn't manage to get into this at all, but the band performed it well. 5/5

18. Run to the hills: An all-time classic which remained famous for 25 years, and will probably still be famous when im dead (im 13). An excellent way to end a concert, and all the band members perform it well. Nicko McBrain even plays the drums without the heads. Up the Irons!!!!!!!!!! 6.5/5

Best bit: The fight with the troll in "The Evil that Men Do"

Worst bit: The pause between "Iron Maiden" and "The Number of the Beast" is unnecessarily long, but at least they play my favourite song afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie invades Rio.......2007-04-16

This is among the very best of my music dvd/vhs collection. This well-filmed, entertaining concert footage captures Maiden at their energetic best. In spite of it being the final show of another long worldwide trek, you can tell they really enjoy what they do. Most amazing to me was the inclusion of a couple of the Blaze Bayley-era tracks, which if anything, Bruce takes to another level! Maiden realizes every era of their history is important to their fans. Up the Irons! Long live Maiden!

5 out of 5 stars Mastered the Art.......2007-02-25

Iron Maiden has mastered the art of providing both a musical and visual kick in the face. There is no band in my opinion that has been able to capture their essence in the dvd format better than Iron Maiden. The sound on this dvd is incredible. The three guitars mesh incredibly well in the studio and live. They play with such precision it's remarkable. The camera work is great but I do wish they didn't cut from camera to camera as frequently as they do. That of course, is certainly not limited to this dvd as I find it to be the case with most concert dvds. As with any band with an extensive catalog, there are some songs I would substitute but this isn't a chinese food place. This concert is from that tour and thus, we get that set list. This dvd is a must have for all metal fans. Those wishing to check out what Iron Maiden is all about or those who have been upping the irons for decades will be thoroughly pleased. I can't recommend this enough.

3 out of 5 stars May cause seizures..........2006-12-26

I really enjoyed the set list on this DVD concert. I had no problem with some of concert being devoted to 'Brave New World' as it is one of my favorite Maiden albums. But, along with everyone else, it would have been nice if the cameras could have lingered for longer than 3 seconds at a time on one musician or vocalist, as the case may be. The camera work gave me a headache!!! Also, Janick Gers is such a tiresome twit!!! I was happy with the lack of audience members mugging for the camera, however. (Thank you, IM!!) The Day in the Life of the band on the second disc wasn't anything to write home about, I could have skipped it entirely. (I had to wonder why they even bothered with the Easter Egg portions.)

I would rent this again, but I wouldn't buy it. I will buy the CD or download the album instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Video.......2006-12-06

Do I need to say anymore about this concert? They played for more than 250,000 people, not a lot of bands can pull something like that off. Amazing concert, really good set list too. Not a lot of bonus material, even though it is pretty interesting.

5 out of 5 stars RBD IS DA BEST!.......2007-06-11

i've seen dis dvd 13 x's already. it was better than da last 2 live dvd's. it sounds better than the cd's. nd dis is da 1st time i heard poncho singing good. rbd live in rio is da best i heard from rbd!

5 out of 5 stars The best i ever heard.......2007-06-08

RBD is very popular group in America, this concert involve almost all of their hits. Nice, nice, please more concerts like that.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!!.......2007-04-26

By far this is the best RBD live material!!!

First: the arrangements in the song like Solo para ti or Tras de mi are excellent.

Second: the group sings better than in Tour Generacíon RBD and obviously much better than in Live in Hollywood. The difference is that even if Dulce doestn't sing they still sound cool, in Live in Hollywood Dulce was like the only singer.

Third: the brazilian crowd is more animated than the Mexican or American crowd and they seem to know every song. They sang in many songs like Enseñame, Solo quedate en silencio, Salvame, Nuestro Amor...

Fourth: the sound and image quality couldn't be better. If you own a home theater it looks and hears like you are in the concert.

This DVD makes RBD the huge group and how seriously they take thir jobs.

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Live RBD DVD to date!!!.......2007-04-11

Seriously, I was going into this disk expecting another lackluster DVD (production values-wise) from Televisa and EMI, but thus far I must say that this is the ULTIMATE live RBD DVD to date!!!

I've got all of RBD's CD's and DVD's and trust me when I say this disc blows the other 2 live DVD's out of the water. This is the one we have all been waiting for.

The previous 2 both had their issues. "Tour Generación" was 16:9 letterbox, but was not anamorphic or enhanced for widescreen TV's. Also, on a high end TV pixilation and other picture distortions for pretty much constant. The 2.0 and 5.1 audio tracks were sufficient, but nothing outstanding or noteworthy. "Live in Hollywood" had a somewhat improved picture quality over the 1st, except this time the picture is cropped into a 4:3 more square ratio so if you have a high-def or high quality TV you're screwed again. The sound on this one is also very comparable to the previous. One more downer about "Live in Hollywood" is, I assume since they only did new concert material or songs not already included in "Tour Generación," the entire runtime for this concert is a paltry 60 mins.

So here comes the goods:

This "Live in Rio" disc is a much higher-quality product in virtually every way. Finally a serious RBD fan can be totally satisfied. From the start the menus are formatted for a widescreen TV. They also give you a choice of Spanish, English, or Portuguese for the menu text (nice touch). Since I am an RBD fan who primarily speaks and understands English it was such a delight and totally unexpected to find that the entire concert features optional English translations for the lyrics throughout along with the choices of either Spanish or Portuguese subs.

The visuals are outstanding. FINALLY a/the concert is presented anamorphically for audio/videophilles everywhere. Not only that, but the picture quality is finally up to "American" standards as far as clarity, color tone, everything. Also the camerawork is much, much more polished/improved/and professional compared to the previous 2 concert DVDs. It's simply amazing. The members of RBD never looked so good on the screen before.

Again, both the 2.0 and 5.1 audio tracks are vastly improved over the previous live DVD's. With either one of the older ones neither audio track available totally satisfied. Either choice had different issues, but now they got the mixing right.

The extras are not necessarily groundbreaking or essential, but again I was impressed that they were also subtitled in English and the first 2 are also anamorphic (not that that is necessary for these kinds of features).

And now you're left with simply RBD and their performance. Awesome. Not only are the production values all improved, but this is quite simply the best concert (and longest) of the 3 to boot. Performance-wise the members of RBD are just much more in the Zone during this Rio concert. That's all you need to know. Now they've finally received the high-quality production and execution they've long deserved. This DVD MUCH better demonstrates what level of international stardom RBD has achieved.

Trust me amigos, Dulce Maria, Maite, and Anahí never EVER looked soo good on your television before.

So if you're one of those fans out there on some kind of a budget and you're not sure whether you should purchase this disc or not because you already have these songs on the other live DVD's THINK AGAIN!!!! And do yourself a BIG favor and snatch this up as soon as you can. And if you've never purchased or watched one of their live DVD's before, just skip the others and come straight here, this one totally delivers.

Now when are they gonna come out with this thing on CD???

2 out of 5 stars Audio Ruined It.......2007-05-07

This could have been a fantastic piece of work for Rush fans. Great quality video and good song selection by the band. However, whoever mixed the sound should lose their job or be shot, maybe both. Garbled muddy sound made this unwatchable to this Rush fan. I recommend R30 instead. Don't waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars This Concert is Alive and Kicking.......2006-11-18

I caught the Vapor Trails concert in Denver and was once again shocked at how perfect these guys play live. This concert DVD has an energy level far beyond todays bands. Of course RUSH is a band that plays for the fans. The Rio crowd was very responsive and the song line-up is great. The audio and video is first rate too. It's awesome on a big screen with quality HiFi equipment. If you enjoy true musicians and live performances you will love this DVD and be happy you added it to your collection.
Enjoy the show!

5 out of 5 stars It Depends What You Like.......2006-10-07

Note: This is the concert DVD of Rush In Rio, this does not contain the special features disc like on the 2 disc Rush In Rio set.

This Rush concert was filmed in Rio de Janeiro on November 23, 2002 during Rush's Vapor Trails Tour. This is an excellent concert and is definitely worth buying. The only question is: To get just the concert (this product), or to get the concert, a 50-minute Rush in Brazil documentary, and some multi-camera views of YYZ, O Baterista, and La Villa Strangiato (the original Rush In Rio 2-DVD set). I'm a big documentary fan so I would buy the original Rush In Rio, but for brand new Rush fans who just want a good concert, this is the DVD.

Rush In Rio was filmed on the last date of the Vapor Trails Tour. Not only does Rush's music make this a good show, you also have 40,000 chanting fans in the audience singing along with the music. Another Rush first is that this is the entire concert on DVD. In the past, a few songs were not included on the DVD, this time though you get 2 hours and 45 minutes of solid Rush music. 29 songs in total and they include:

1. Tom Sawyer
2. Distant Early Warning
3. New World Man
4. Roll The Bones
5. Earthshine
6. YYZ
7. The Pass
8. Bravado
9. The Big Money
10. The Trees
11. Freewill
12. Closer To The Heart
13. Natural Science

Intermission

14. One Little Victory
15. Driven
16. Ghost Rider
17. Secret Touch
18. Dreamline
19. Red Sector A
20. Leave That Thing Alone
21. O Baterista (Drum Solo)
22. Resist (Acoustic)
23. 2112 (Overture and The Temples of Syrinx)
24. Limelight
25. La Villa Strangiato
26. The Spirit Of Radio
27. By-Tor And The Snow Dog (About 4 minutes)
28. Cygnus X-1 (Instrumental part)
29. Working Man

This is a great DVD, so all you have to do is decide whether or not you want the documentary (which I highly recommend) or if you don't.

        Product Description

APOCALYPSE has been the first Brazilian band signed by Musea for a new record. Released at the end of the Eighties, "Lendas Encantadas" (1989) revealed an exceptional band playing Progressive rock music full of energy, obviously inspired by MARILLION. The reissue includes four bonus-tracks recorded in 1996. The second album "Perto Do Amanhecer" (1995) proves to be in the same vein, but even better ! These twelve concise pieces mix peaceful acoustic moments with more agressive and nearly hard-rock passages. And the Portuguese singing gives the music an exotic and very nice touch. Discover the warmth of this sunny music, when admiring the superb pictures included in the booklet. "Aurora Dos Sonhos" (1996) displays a luxurious Progressive rock music, halfway between influences from the Italian school from the Seventies (BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA) and the recent neo Progressive efficiency. A successful and subtle mixing. "Refugio" (2003) includes ten tracks (Plus two bonus tracks) and a fantastic booklet with photos, lyrics and information about the band. More than the usual quality Progressive rock with symphonic influences, it delivers us those forgotten feelings like peace, love and compassion. It is, undoubtly, an album worth listening to ! Available on both CD and DVD formats, "Live In Rio" features the band performing in the Rio ArtRock Festival 2005. That's the occasion to discover a new repertoire, as well as old tracks sung by the newcomer Gustavo DEMARCHI. His particularity is to sing in English, unlike his predecessor. Thanks to this, the music sounds more neo Progresive than ever ! One hour and a quarter of music you cannot afford to miss !
