High concept and high class, An American Classic is a worthy visual complement to Tony Bennett's 2006 duets CD of the same name. The notion of pairing veteran artists with a variety of singing partners is nothing new, of course (cf. B.B. King and Frank Sinatra, among many others), but this one goes a step further; under the direction of Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and his team, Bennett appears in what's described as a "docu-musical," faithfully re-creating a variety of performance settings much like the ones in which the 80-year-old singer has appeared in the course of his long, fruitful career. Thus we find him on a concert stage with Barbra Streisand ("Smile"), in a nightclub with John Legend (a swinging, uptempo "Sing, You Sinners"), in the studio with k.d. lang and trumpeter Chris Botti ("Because of You"), on a '60s-style TV variety show with Diana Krall (a classy "The Best is Yet to Come"), in Vegas with Elton John ("Rags To Riches") and then Michael Buble (an amusing "Just in Time"), and so forth, on up to Bennett's triumphant shot on MTV Unplugged with Christina Aguilera (no jazz singer, but she keeps most of her excesses in check on "Steppin' Out") and the inevitable "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (Bennett with piano accompaniment only). It's all very respectful, well staged, and entertainingly choreographed, but if this 45-minute cavalcade has a significant shortcoming, it's that it mostly lacks fire and spontaneity; the only time Bennett cuts loose is during an audio-only "I Got Rhythm" heard under the various DVD menus. Viewers may also be disappointed that Sting, Bono, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, the Dixie Chicks, and several others on the CD do not appear here, and it's a notable drag that not a single one of the composers or arrangers of the material is identified. Great production, great choreography, great performances!.......2007-05-12

Before I purchased this item, I thought I would only enjoy a few tracks by my favorite artists. But, it kept me enthralled all through the playing time. Personally, I bought this one because I like Barbra Streisand. But, wow, all the duet performances are so great. I've watched it twice now (in only 2 weeks). And I think I'll still enjoy it some more times. I think this DVD can be played at your home parties for the enjoyment of your valued guests.

First, I give this four starts and not five only for the brevity of the program. But 40-odd minutes still offer many opportunities to appreciate what this 80 year-old can do! The creative program was directed by Rob Marshall and includes choreography (Tony even dances a bit) and visuals that live up to his Chicago accomplishments. Being something of a purist, I have to say I was initially skeptical of the "guest list." Each musician rises to the challenge, and the songs alternate between touching and flashy. Tony shines in each tune, an effect heightened by a full orchestra and elaborate sets. The film quality is excellent and vivid as is the sound recording. I found myself watching and re-watching sections over and over again -- you will, too. The extra features (including the "making of" documentary) are very interesting, too. This project was clearly a work of love for all involved. What a fine way to celebrate Tony's career.

Great Buy.......2007-03-26

I had caught the tail end of this concert when it was on tv. I enjoyed what I saw and heard, and It was definately what I had expected. Very good singing by Toney B's guest and the incomperable Toney B was excellent as always!!!!!!!! He still has his pipes at 80!!!!! Totally blew me away!!!! The concert is more of a mock tv show. Though I did like this format, it lacked the enthusiasm of those old dean martin tv shows. The director should have had more interaction with Tony and his guest singers. It would have been fun to see him talking about jazz music, with the modern day crooner, Michael Buble , for instance. All in all this is a great dvd definately worth buying, with the performances with Christina Agulara and Michael Buble standing out!!!!

I am giving four stars because I dont waste my time writing negative reviews- so a four star review means I have to diss something. My stomach was turning watching the cheezy and totally gross dance scenes- feathered fans and top hats and canes- PUHLEEZE !! None of these vocals are enhanced in any way buy these gyrating midriffs with the same old sorry meaningless cliched moves and the horrific non flattering outfits- they look like pole dancers in an atlantic city off the beaten path porn palace. Have I made my case?
Other than that the songs chosen were interesting, everyone does a masterful job singing - but I couldn't watch this tape again. These 2006 scenes just makes one all the more nostalgic for the neon lights of the old time dimly lit smoky jazz clubs when musical craft was king- I bet tony wishes that this style was still reigning as well

More of a Broadway musical than a concert...........2007-06-12

I was looking for her beautiful songs but the first half of the concert was like a Broadway musical and in the second half was more songs to listen to. It even had a boring Mike Myer comedy act in the middle from SNL which had no place in this concert.

BARBRA, CAN YOU HEAR ME???.......2007-05-08

I have to start out by saying that I am not the traditional STREISAND Fan. Yes, I love her voice, and who doesn't think she's a Legend Unmatched? Still, the only movies I have seen of her's are YENTIL and THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES and the only recording I own is the New York version of this same tour.
Yeah, I know... SO SUE ME!

That being said, I remember watching the HBO Special in 1994 because I wanted to know why the hell someone would pay $300 for a concert ticket (not as exorbitent today as back then). The answer for me was THE YENTIL MEDLEY. When I heard her duet version of PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME,
I thought "Now THAT is a BAD [...]". It was with great anticipation then that I bought this DVD.
BIG LET DOWN!

I have to agree that while she is in great voice, it just doesn't have the power and sheen of the HBO Special and certainly not that of the CD recording. WHOSE BRAINY IDEA WAS IT TO ADD MIKE MYERS as LINDA RICHMAN
(a lengthy diatribe which while cute, is HARDLY worth the interruption to the show and definitely not worthy to replace what for me WAS the darn show)? Plus she came back and kicked [...] again with her encore of SOMEWHERE, which can be found NOWHERE on this DVD.

I am sure BARBRA approved this version, so I have to question WHY she or anyone, for that matter, would make suck a faux-pas.
You're truly letting your fans (staunch and novice) way down with this one.

I really looked forward to the release of this DVD! I loved the VHS of The Concert (same show but filmed in NY)and was hoping for the same. This is the same but different, the dialogue is less polished, the jokes don't always work, the song selection is different, and it seems more like a trial run than the NY performance, which was filmed much later, towards the end of the tour, when everything worked perfectly. When Babs is singing everything clicks and sounds wonderful, but the banter and anecdotes between songs works much less effectively than on the video. The Concert should be re-released on video!

I will be open and recommend this DVD. Before she got married and hid in her garden, Barbra could unleash her amazing vocal talent and move the masses. Let's hope this forthcoming DVD will usher in the other TV concert and performance specials going back to 1965. I give this 4/5 stars, leaving one out as punishment for making THE MOVIE ALBUM

Possibly one of the greatest concerts of all time. Even non Streisand lovers have to attest to that. Contains all of her classics some with new musical arrangements. Her rendition of Somewhere is 'heavenly'. A great addition to any collection. Do yourself a favour and buy it now!

i first saw this concert at madison square garden on september 27 th 2000 the first night of one of barbra streisand's farwell concerts in new york. it was great seeing barbra live but i wasn't sitting in the good seats which everyone calls the blood nosed seats. i first saw the las vegas concert on valentines day of 2001 but they cut out the scene when barbra was talking to shirley mclaine but i loved it anyway bacause barbra wasn't the size of an ant this time. then i coupple of years laiter i bought it on dvd and enjoyed it even more. barbra has been my idol since i was 5 years old.

It is hard to confuse Barbra Streisand's voice with someone else's. Whatever song style she sings - you can always recognize her and this is a sign of a gifted singer. Barbra Streisand is very artistic and natural on the stage, acting as if she is living it. Very good concert.

Barbra Streisand is my favorite actress/singer. In this "Timeless" DVD, it's as if I've met her personally! In the concert itself, she have shown some of the things that she passed through her life. Starting with the recording studio, a 15-year old Barbra was played by Lauren Frost. She even sang songs from the Broadway, such as Miss Marmelstein, Don't Rain on My Parade, and Second Hand Rose. Also her Academy-award winner song, "Evergreen". In the ActII, she had a video of the highlights in her career..."The Main Event/Fight", "People" and "Send in the Clowns". Watch this concert...and you'll experience the ABSOLUTE BARBRA ever...!

In 1985, 16 years before her memoir became the basis for the television film Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows, Lorna Luft narrated this documentary focusing on her mother's "second career" following her years at MGM. The 59-minute retrospective (reduced from its original 90 minutes) collects comments from family and colleagues, shows clips from concerts at the London Palladium, Carnegie Hall, and the Palace Theater, a previously unseen 30-second scene cut from her famous comeback film, A Star Is Born, and scenes from her short-lived TV show.

Not surprisingly, some of the footage spotlights Garland's affection for her kids: she shares the stage at the Palladium with Liza Minnelli and appears with Lorna and Joe Luft at the Palace and sings to them on her TV show. And while many of the songs are shown only in brief clips, there are a number of complete performances, including a duet with Barbra Streisand of "Get Happy" and "Happy Days Are Here Again," her dramatically charged rendition of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" following JFK's death, "Ol' Man River," and "The Man That Got Away." And of course "Over the Rainbow" is here, in a 1955 performance that is the only TV recording of how she performed the song in concert: sitting on the edge of the stage, face-to-face with the audience. Tour de Force a la Judy!.......2006-07-21

Being too young to have seen Judy Garland in concert has always been a regret of mine. The energy she projected in person must have been truly unique. Well, for those in the same boat as I am, here's the next best thing. What a shame that professional footage of her concerts were never made. Her TV series, however, is represented here quite well. The duets, the comedy sketches, the solo numbers, all show what a versatile performer Judy Garland was.

Without the constraints of a movie script or schedule, Judy allows herself to really project her full range of emotions in her songs. Particularly powerful are 'Old Man River' and 'Battle Hymn of the Republic'. Judy just sings her heart out in both songs, the emotional peak higher than anything in her movies. Particularly touching are her songs sung to her children Liza, Lorna and Joe. Lorna's song, with specially written lyrics by Johnny Mercer, is sung so lovingly by Judy that it left me in tears. There are also some lovely moments when all three children perform with Judy together. Liza's young strong voice is so much like her mother's.

If you think Judy was intense in her movie numbers, think again, for they are nothing compared to what she does on the stage and live in person. How lucky we are that they are captured and presented beautifully here in this hour-long DVD.

Simply a must-have if you're a Judy fan.

If you like Judy Garland this is the dvd for you , it has many of her wonderful concerts and some very touching moments with her children. also a few surprises at the end . It's great! I loved it! Worth every penny. She was a great star and someone to be remembered .I am happy we have this to remember her by.

If you're trying to decide whether to purchase this collection of Judy's best concert years performances, or JUST JUDY from the Judy Garland Show Collection, grab THIS collection and run, while it's still available. I own them both, and this one outclasses JUST JUDY in every way, especially if you have one of the new digital Widescreens and use a DVD player with Progressive Scan. JUST JUDY is a high tech, restored black and white presentation. However, in obtaining this remarkable pristeen clarity, the black and white is so vivid and harsh, it virtually removes all of Judy's makeup, even to the point of Judy's side teeth appearing as though there is a 1/8th black gap between each tooth! Oh, yes, and I mustn't forget the wrinkles, and heavy black eye shadow that contributes to Judy's stark appearance. Even the sound is far superior. BUY THIS DVD. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!!

I am a big fan of Judy Garland, and this is one of my favorite Judy films, even though this was made in 1985, long after she passed away. Hosted by Judy's daughter, Lorna Luft,this movie overviews her career from 1951-1969, also known as "The Concert Years", and shows performances from The Judy Garland Show, The London Palladium, Carnegie Hall, and The Palace. They show parts of scenes from her movies, including "A Star is Born" and "Till the Clouds Roll By", but the film is mostly highlighting her concerts and TV years; not her movie career. (Extra on the DVD includes the A Star is Born premiere) The affection for her three kids are indeed shown in this film; performing with Liza at the London Palladium, and singing to her younger children, Lorna and Joe, on her TV show is also a great part of the film. Some other stars that shared the stage with her in this movie are Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman, Bob Newhart, Danny O'Connor, and of course Liza Minnelli. Some musical highlights are "The Man that Got Away", "Ol' Man River", "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (on her show after JFK was assassinated), "Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy" (with Streisand), "Chicago", "Smile", "Get Happy", "You Made me Love You", "The Trolley Song", "For Me and My Gal", "Swanee", "San Francisco", and many others. Loved it from start to finish! Not only does Barbara Sing at her finest, she chats with you like your old friends. Has some cute&Funny bits as well. The audio 5.1 is quite good I would have enjoyed the "DTS" that much more BUT this is a great concert.The Title says it all " THE CONCERT" and it is! I watch it on my 56" DLP Projection TV and my Bose LifeStiles 35s Home Theater system. If you enjoy Barbars talent As I do, than this is a must have! Bill M

THE MOTHER OF ALL DIVAS RETURNS.......2004-03-24

There one way you can tell a person is a true star and that is there entrance to the stage. Barbra's return to the stage opening number is one of them. It will give you goose bumps and sets the tone for the rest of the show. She looks gorgeous and her voice never sounded better singing her classics along with a few surprizes. I have watch this concert over and over and never get tired of it. A must have for all Barbra fans !

Consider this brilliant 1994 concert special, originally aired on cable, both as a warning about the debasement of the term, and as a primer on how a true pop diva comports herself. Acting as producer and director, and weaving her considerable gifts as an actress through a sumptuous bouquet of wonderful songs, Barbra Streisand creates a beautifully structured two-act review that works on multiple levels.

As autobiography, Barbra--The Concert shuttles adroitly between her plain Brooklyn origins and plush contemporary station as a Hollywood hyphenate. Using archival stills and film footage, as well as some deft film clips (such as a brief but disarming "duet" with Marlon Brando that reconstructs her "life-altering" teen crush on the actor) and witty sessions with an unseen therapist, Streisand manages to spoof her own image and tweak her supposed glamour, yet also celebrate her own persistent ambition and artistic achievement. Crucial to this self-analysis is a savvy choice of superb songs conspicuously skewed to Broadway musicals, from which she's chosen pieces that mirror her own beliefs and experiences. In the process, she makes such self-referential tactics seem revelatory instead of merely vain, succeeding in balancing romantic optimism, feminist self-determination, and flickers of amused detachment.

Spectacle and intimacy are likewise entwined to striking effect. A lavish stage set suggesting an oversized living room and the lush musical coloration of a full orchestra evoke great scale, yet the star meets her audience alone, a hostess ready to reminisce, meditate, or nakedly emote. Her hits are there, of course, but it's the thematic cohesion and collective emotional power that make Streisand's one-woman show a tour de force. Its five Emmy Awards are merely deserved confirmation that this is a rare entertainment indeed. --Sam Sutherland

Unique performance with a good mix of songs and pacing. A bit overly sentimental of course, but by using several staged effects traced an
effective biography of her career. Several noteworthy numbers.

I'm going to make this short.

My Husband & I saw Barbra Streisand in San Jose in 1994.
We loved the show. She has been an inspiration to me for years.
I purchased "The Concert" and to my disapointment the duo
that she did with herself was not on the DVD....Why is that?

I just re-watched this video after several years, and all the goosebumps are still there. It also re-confirms a fact: There is NO ONE alive on the planet today who is remotely as talented as Barbra Streisand. Though the days of her visibility and selling records in the big numbers might as well be considered pre-historic, she remains a true living legend, with any of the hype that surrounds celebrity today being totally unnecessary. I probably hadn't listened to her recordings or thought much about her in years, at the time of this concert. When I viewed it, it re-confirmed to me what true talent is, which you don't expect anymore, when the likes of Britney Spears are "superstars." Barbra in this concert is not only filled with humanity, charm, and humility, but "the voice" is as near perfect as any of her recordings....better, really. What might have been considered self-indulgence by anyone else, here, is only fascinating...she has the audience literally rising out of their seats at a mere gesture. There are many highlights, too many to mention. If you're a fan, this is truly the "ultimate event." If not, you should watch it anyway, to see first hand what is meant by "God given talent" There has never been anyone like Barbra Streisand, and there never will be.

It just doesn't get any Grander than this. This is Barbra at her finest! Her duet with Marlon Brando is nothing short of genius.Some of my favorite moments are "Rain On My Parade" and "On a Clear Day".

Anyone who is a Barbra Streisand fan will love this video!!! Not only does Barbra give her usual breathtaking performance, but the interaction she has with the audience is wonderful. It was so nice to see her mother in the audiance, you could tell that Barbra was happy to have her with her. I cried and cheered both at the same time! I don't know how she does it, I could see the anticipation in her face when she first walked out on the stage, to be replaced with the realization that she truly had come home. Barbra is truly a legend, and an inspiration to all! Thanks Barbra!!!!!!!
