5 out of 5 stars Daughter loved it........2007-05-30

I loved that it got here so much sooner than they said it would. It is a great value for the price, there are double the episodes on the newer Winx Club DVD's starting with this one. Made my spoiled daughters 264 minutes, then she wanted something else ;P

5 out of 5 stars Winx Club.......2007-03-20

My daughter loves Winx Club and of course she has to have them when they come out on DVD. I really like this set because it has 12 episodes in it. Which is a lot better then the 5 or 6 per volume that season one had. Not only does it save me money but it keeps my daughter from asking all the time when the next volume is coming out. It's definatly worth the money you spend on it. I gotta say this is the one cartoon I don't mind watching with my daughter. I just hope they keep putting this many episodes in one volume. Since I buy all the Winx Club DVD here hopefully Amazon keeps selling them.......cause she's already asking about season 3.

4 out of 5 stars Layla and the Pixies.......2007-03-19

It's got some of the best story lines and episodes. It's full of adventure and romance. It's a cartoon that is well owrth the effort. It's how guys should treat they're girls too. Don't settle for anything less; Winx Club fans!

5 out of 5 stars Winx Club Rocks!.......2007-02-25

I am a girl in middle school, and I think Winx Club rocks! I watch it on 4Kids TV every weekend. My favorite characters from Winx Club are Flora, Musa, Mirta, Riven, and Helia. So far there are 2 complete seasons of Winx Club on 4Kids, and eight episodes of the third season. I have all of the Winx Club DVDs from the first season, and this one from the second season. Winx Club is my all time favorite TV show.

The Pixies' 2004 reunion was the biggest thing that's happened in alternative rock since Nirvana, and filmmakers Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin were there with their cameras, trailing the genre's progenitors across North America and Europe as they reclaimed their legacy. Besides beautifully shot concert footage featuring all or part of 15 songs, we get a view inside the Pixies' heads. All four were managing complex personal issues when they reunited. We see frontman Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis) dealing with a bump in his solo career, bassist Kim Deal juggling sobriety and creating new Breeders songs, guitarist Joey Santiago grappling with parenthood and financial issues, and drummer David Lovering rescued from his post-Pixes life as a struggling magician. They make no secret that they're doing it for the money, but learn along this tour of the world's stages and their psyches that there's a magic in their knotty, raw music that has the power to sustain their audiences and--for a time, at least--themselves. There's bonus footage of the movie's leftovers, but little of it's interesting except for the band's visit to modern psychedelicists Sigur Ros's Iceland studio. Über-producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois provides the film's beautiful, glacially paced incidental music. --Ted Drozdowski

Description

When college rock darlings the Pixies broke up in 1992, their fans were shocked and dismayed. When they reunited in 2004, those same fans and legions of new listeners were ecstatic and filled with high hopes. loudQUIETloud follows the rehearsals and the warm up shows for the full-fledged, sold out reunion tour. It also catalogs, in the cinema verite style of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and Bob Dylan's "Don't Look Back", the less glamorous side of the touring band lifestyle, getting as close to this enigmatic act as anyone is ever likely to get. LoudQUIETloud captures the Pixies, their families and their fans in what seems to be a once in a lifetime chance at rock n roll redemption.

5 out of 5 stars Wow. If You Didn't Know the Pixies You Will After This.......2007-06-20

First it should be made clear that this is NOT the concert movie. The concert shots are short and more "inserts" than full-blown songs.

I figured that I'd get a look at what the Pixies were really like personally watching this movie but I was blown away by how much you learn about them: about Frank's new family, Joey's current family, Kim's realtionship with her sister and the fans that worship her and David's near brush with substance absuse which captures one of the most bizarre moments in the whole film--their Chicago appearance where he's lost.

Other fascinating things about this film are the way fans (old AND new, which is amazing) worship them, about how they can all sit in a room and not speak, the Chicago fan who starts her own Pixies cover band. The first warmup gig is a gas to watch too.

If you're a Pixies fan this is a MUST HAVE and essential viewing. Absolutely no two ways about it. Even if you're a casual fan (I am), I was riveted to the film the whole time--it stands on its own whether you like their music or not. It's vaguely reminiscent of the Radiohead film following them around on tour.

The other fascinating aspect to it is to see what had become of the lives of former indie-rock superstars in the years since. While that is kind of depressing, the most uplifting thing about the film is how many TEENAGE fans the Pixies have currently, which is nothing short of astounding. Their music has jumped a generation, which is rare.

Best band documentary I've seen since the Radiohead one, and overall. This is how to do them. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Gouge Away.......2007-06-12

Excellent documentary on the Pixies. Keep in mind it's just that - a documentary. There is some good concert footage, but the point of this film is to show the strained yet professional relationship between all four members of the Pixies during their 2004 reunion tour. It's fascinating to watch them interact off-stage - all four of them seem to be in their own orbits. They don't really talk with each other and when they do, it seems like they are keeping their distance. As well, when they do interact it's mostly for professional reasons. However, once on stage the four of them use their music to find some common ground (most of the time) and really make magic. The great thing is that after nearly fifteen years the music hasn't aged and they haven't lost their edge - if anything maturity has added a dimension of artistic credibility to their music. If you're a Pixies fan and haven't watched this, put this in your shopping cart right now.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Amazed.......2007-03-13

LoudQUIETloud - it's not for everybody, but neither are the Pixies. Just as I had listened to Trompe le Monde and Doolittle with fixed fascination for the very first time, I watched this doc with the same pure relish. To see the guys (and one ultra-cool girl) who left such an indelible mark on indie music lovers everywhere, to say nothing of the music world as a whole, was a long-awaited treat. Sure, this film lacks something. Delve into the Pixies' innermost eccentricities it does not, and the time before the turbid breakup is left equally nebulous. But this film's focus is on the reunion, and that is what we get: the revitalization of some amazing, timeless tunes and a glimpse at the odd band who created them. Despite a camera that adds its ten-pounds' worth to age and sobriety, this flick still manages to keep them as cool as ever and everyone else hankering for more, a habit formed early on by every Pixies fan.

5 out of 5 stars Pixies - True Punks.......2007-02-17

This is a beautiful film which exposes the members of the Pixies as refreshingly normal humans. They reunited for a massive tour after being apart for many years. The amount of understated concern and affection they have for each other came through clearly and explained the chemestry that make them one of the most unique and wonderful bands to come down the pike. Anyone can put on leather, get a Mowhawk, and declare himself a punk. However, it takes a real punk to perform at middle age and overweight and not only pull it off but blow the doors off the barn! I gained new respect for ALL the band members not only as musicians but also as human beings. Long live the Pixies!

5 out of 5 stars And Now I Am Not The Only Pixies Fan In The House..........2007-01-25

I am a long time fan and have seen them three times and Frank Black a number of times as well. Why do I say this? Because seeing this film was about as good seeing them live, of course I got to see the film at the fabulous Alabama Theater with my son who is also a fan (one of the few cool places in Brimingham). Now I have my very own copy and have played it for my other kids who have now turned into fans.

This movies shows the human element, that these rock Gods are mere mortals like the rest of us. They just rock better then we do.

Thanks for getting back together! Another studio album perhaps???

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars what?No anamorphic?.......2007-03-24

Fine camerawork and editing are undercut by the lack of anamorphic mastering which in a widescreen video produced in 2006 is inexcusable. Also the unplugged format doesn't really serve Pixies music well. Because despite the obvious influences from the Talking Heads and the Police, the Pixies aren't really about music. They aren't really about playing guitars. Theirs is an impressionistic sound in which the effect is the point of the song. The lyrics mean whatever you happen to think they mean. Take away Santiago's distortion and half the sound and fury is gone.
Because of the quick cutting video in Pixies Sell Out it looks like the Club Date is the concert video to have.

5 out of 5 stars Not tame........2006-08-28

From the behind-the-scenes practice and dress rehersal on this DVD, it's apparent that the Pixies were not particularly comfortable performing an acoustic set. They had no reason to be nervous. It takes a lot more than a distortion pedal to make a Pixies song a Pixies song, and removing it just brings those signature elements to the surface. In particular, Joey's expressive guitar playing. Sounds I once assumed to be synthetic are now obviously the result of his gonzo style. But everyone contributes, and the clean acoustic arrangements make the sheer energy and catchiness of many Pixies songs stand out. How can you not sing along to "Hey" or "Gigantic"?

Pixies fans will buy this DVD regardless, but I think it may make a great introduction for new listeners. If you're just curious about the Pixies, give it a listen. Sing along a little. You'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate Pixies.......2006-08-26

Really good video. Most of the songs translate to acoustic really well. Compared to "Pixies Sell-out", this has quite a very different, more subtle dynamic. Francis's weird, edgy lyrics become much clearer. A good thing! Stand-outs: "Mr. Grieves", "Wave of Mutilation", "Gauge Away", "Hey" and "Debaser"...from the BTS docu. Excellent behind-the-scenes bonus footage. You get an intimate view of the band working out the new arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Great Set For The Fans.......2006-08-23

This DVD isn't going to blow any non-Pixies fans away, but if you love The Pixies like I do then pick this up.

Pixies fans are advised to spend a loudquietloud evening with their favorite band courtesy of this film of a rare event: the Pixies performing in a small venue in their hometown of Boston. Club Date captures the band in 2004 as they re-formed after a 10-year split. In contrast to The Pixies - Sell Out which is also from their 2004 reunion tour and features the band playing before massive crowds at sold-out festivals, Club Date is a more intimate experience, but no less energetic. As they emerge to start the 29-song set with "La La Love You," the band is visibly relaxed and seem at home. There's no hint at all of the ten year break or any acrimony that caused the band's split years before. Feeding off the enthusiasm from the small but vocal crowd, the Pixies' set builds in intensity as they rip through their hits. While their most driven and powerful songs like "Something Against You," "Vamos," and "Tame" may not make the crowd mosh and go as crazy as they once would have, the power is still there, and when they launch into the opening chords of "U-Mass" it's clear that the magic is still there as well, it's just the magicians are a little older and wiser. For Pixies fans who never had the chance to see their favorite band in a small venue, this is the next best thing. The bonus features is a showcase of a never-before-seen set of one of the band's first performances in 1986. The footage itself is far from topnotch, but fans will likely enjoy hearing some early performances of Pixies standards while witnessing the early days of a seminal group whose best years are yet ahead of them. --Daniel Vancini

I saw the Dandy's at the Paradise a while back. I would have loved to see the Pixies there. The DVD is great; video and audio is just right. I highly recommend it to any Pixie fan.

4 out of 5 stars good performance.......2006-11-18

my favorite pixies video is defintely the england show in 88 but holy cow you wont believe the size of FB in the 86 bonus show...this boston show they seem to be a little tired

5 out of 5 stars so f'n brilliant!.......2006-11-12

They're jovial and chatty fun as there set begins, and it's great to see and listen to. There "been all around the world" is new and brilliant. Then they lay into the heavy meat of there songs, and unload with full force. I loved that they played "sad punk." They were really "on" and got deep into it, this night. They prove themselves to be America's best and most interesting band, right here. This is the best of there three concert dvd's. It's wild to see them in the bonus 1986 concert (on bad tape) looking so young, yet sounding so good. A real treat. Pixies ecstacy. If you're into good music, get this.

Sell Out begins with a version of "Bone Machine" compiled from reunion gigs the world over. It works surprisingly well--the Pixies are nothing if not consistent--although they sure look different from show to show. At some, Kim Deal and David Lovering have long hair. At others, hers is short and he has none. (Black Francis and Joey Santiago don't change as much.) What follows is a 25-song, two-encore set filmed under the stars at France's 2004 Eurockéennes Festival in front of an endless throng, followed by 15 bonus tracks from England, Scotland, Japan, and points across the US (Indio, CA, Austin, TX, and Lowell, MA). If the Pixies "sold out" when they reformed after more than a decade apart, no one can accuse them of sloth. Granted, most songs don't differ radically from their studio counterparts, but nor do they suffer in comparison. The strobe-lit "Tame" and epic "Vamos" are particularly boisterous highlights. At 43 tracks--33 unique compositions plus ten alternate takes--this digital document is admirably comprehensive (despite no interviews with or commentary from the band). Material from all four full-lengths, plus the Come On Pilgrim EP, gets a workout, including the "UK Surf" mix of "Wave of Mutilation" (the B-side featured in Pump Up the Volume). It's all here, with the exception of "Bam Thwok," their nifty comeback single. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

In 1992 the Pixies disbanded after releasing four acclaimed albums and one mini-album in a five-year period. The Pixies are widely regarded as one of the most important rock bands of the past 20 years-and influenced a new wave of alternative bands with their Quiet/Loud/Quiet song structure. Paraphrasing Kurt Cobain: "Nirvana would not have existed without the Pixies." Since the band split up, the leader, Black Francis, started a solo career as Frank Black, and Kim Deal, the bassist and vocalist, went on to form The Breeders. The band reunited in 2004 for a trimphant worldwide tour that saw the band playing better than ever, injecting the classic songs with renewed energy and universal critical response. The band's legacy and reputation has only grown stronger in the 12 years since they broke up, see her as the play in front of enthusiastic audiences, far larger than they had drawn in their heyday. Track Listings: Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), In Heaven, Something Against You, River Euphrates, U-Mass, Bone Machine, Cactus, Ed Is Dead, I Bleed, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hey, Levitate Me, Subbacultcha, Dead, Gouge Away, Velouria, Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, Broken Face, Isla De Encanta, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Holiday, Song, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Wave of Mutilation, Gigantic.

5 out of 5 stars Pixies Sold Out........2007-03-21

This is a wonderful DVD. Seeing as Pixies broke up quite a while ago and there is not a reunion tour in the works at this moment (pray, pray, pray...) there is a decent chance that I will never be able to see them perform live. This is as close as it gets for me, and it's just something I loved to see. The concert itself is not the best, as it's a festival show, outdoors, and is just in a kind of lame setting, and there's the "new" versions of their older stuff, like Vamos, which is just, for lack of a better term, god-awful in its slowed-down form. The other complaint I have about this is that Frank Black, Kim Deal, and Joey Santiago do very little onstage. They just stand there and sing, and occasionally drink (though you do see that Kim Deal is quite skilled at smoking while playing bass), and if you're not into that, than this goes a long way towards becoming a rating-- it's not PG. Otherwise, it's Pixies, and that's precisely the reason I bought this in the first place.

An excellent concert DVD; but if you're a Pixies fan you don't really need to be sold on it, and if you're not, you should hit the albums first. Also worth checking out: LoudQUIETLoud, the documentary taken over the reunion tour.

4 out of 5 stars Jump around.......2006-12-28

I don't know why I wanted the Pixies to jump around on stage while I watched them perform most of their best songs. I guess I expected a live performance, and . . . that's what I got - but the Pixies just stand there and sing.

I was pretty happy to hear "Ed is Dead". The entire audience began to sing with the group. That's what I was looking for -- more audience participation and . . . well, people jumping around.

If you were a Pixies fan back in the day, you'll love this DVD. If you're new to the Pixies, try and keep an open mind. The songs are awesome. Close your eyes and listen. There are over 26 songs to listen to. Plus it's nice to see the band after they broke up in 1992. 4 stars!!!

2 out of 5 stars Pixies are great, but this DVD has sub-par audio..........2006-08-26

Great DVD in general, but the mastering of the audio leaves a lot to be desired. Basically, the sound is too flat in both stereo and 5.1, and the 5.1 mix is really heavy on the right channel (sounds unbalanced).

Most of the footage from this DVD comes from the Eurockennes de Belfort festival. Of which I have an unofficial copy (it was broadcast over digital TV in Europe, a friend recorded it, made a DVD and sent the uncompressed original to me).

Let me say that the broadcast version of this show is *vastly* superior to what is found on this DVD. Which leaves me disappointed and wondering what the fark Rhino Home Video was doing when they mastered this DVD. It's not terrible per se (it is the Pixies after all), but when I know that there is source material out there that is better I simply cannot give this a good rating. They should have put the original audio source on this DVD instead of doing whatever they did to make the audio sound muffled.

I'm actually going to write to Rhino and inquire why the audio on this DVD is so awful.

4 out of 5 stars Pixie's spirit remains..........2006-05-24

One of the big surprises for me in watching "Sell Out" was that the album tracks can be fairly faithfully recreated on stage with a simple 4 piece band. They sound so busy on their recordings - and Joey Santiago plays live his catalogue of punk infused, spaced out guitar licks which I could've sworn on record were the result of numerous overdubs.

This is a scaled down tour by DVD standards. It's really 4 bandmembers cranking it out, night after night, around the world - a no frills affair. But I can't imagine how it could've been better.

They're not the sort of band who establish raport with the audience through sets, costumes, lighting or even consumate musicianship. It's about raw feeling, and this is here, almost surprisingly in abundance.

You get 28 songs from a concert in Belfort, France, plus another 14 songs from various gigs all over the world (8 of the 14 tracks are not songs from the original 28). As you would expect, some songs are on the money, others are not. Although, I'd say more than half are spectacular renditions "Ed is Dead" is better than the original and I love the UK Surf version of "Wave of Mutilation". Kim Deal is fantastic on "In Heaven".

There are a number of interviews in the bonus track section but not with the band, only tour mangagers etc, but worth watching at least once, and you have the option of watching the bonus tracks without them if you wish.

There's also a terrific version of Monkey Gone to Heaven in which you can select which of 6 cameras you want to watch and can change during the song. It's quite fun, like directing your own clip.

The best news is that all of the bands chops are still intact. Deal, Lovering and Santiago all sound terrific and Frank Black can still scream with the best in the business.

Reunion tours aren't often as spirited as this one. If you love the Pixies, you'll treasure it.

4 out of 5 stars A Basic item for all pixies fan's.......2007-03-09

Great 5.1 dolby digital sound at the live part but an average 2.0 dolby stereo at the video section, anyway it's still a basic item if you consider a pixies fan

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest concerts recorded - EVER!!!.......2006-02-11

For Pixies fans, this is a must. The concert footage from a 1988 UK show has to be one of the greatest concerts recorded. It shows how dedicated Charles, Joey, David and Kim are to their music. Kim looks hypnotized most of the time. David's drumming is close to perfect. Joey looks like he's afraid of the crowd. Charles is typical Black Frances; Mad at the world and laughing at it.

The documentary, Gouge, is great. Not only does it provide you with details about the band, it demonstrates how influential the Pixies are to modern rock.

The tour footage is okay. There's good spots, but they're in the middle of some very boring scenes.

Last, the Videos. Pixies are not known for "show", and these videos show that. None of them are really worth watching, to be quite honest, but Veloria provides you with a few panty shots of Kim, which isn't too bad (though this is probably one of the worst videos ever).

5 out of 5 stars Saw it... and instantly became a Pixies fan!.......2006-02-05

All I knew about the Pixies is that Kurt Cobain loved them and that they greatly influenced his music. Then in 2004 they reunited and I found out they were coming to my country, Slovenia. The tickets were sold out two months before the show. Everyone was excited. Of course, I had to learn more about them! I borrowed some stuff from a friend and heard a few of their "hits" - Where is My Mind?, Gigantic, Bone Machine, Caribou and Monkey Gone to Heaven. I liked them.

20th June 2004, the day of the concert. It's raining.
The tickets were sold out, so me and my friends went to stand in front of the Krizanke (ex-)monastery, where they performed. I recognized the five songs I'd heard before and was happy that I went, even though the weather was bad.

A few months later I saw this DVD in a second-hand shop. I didn't even know they had a DVD out. I bought it just to see how these guys look like when performing, since I could hear them live, but not see them.

MAN, was I blown away when I saw the concert!! This DVD instantly made me a Pixies fan. It's still my favourite music DVD.
Four casual looking people:
- a bit (now a lot) overweight vocalist/guitarist Frank Black aka Black Francis
- a Filipino lead guitarist, Joey Santiago
- the nicest woman in rock history, bassist/vocalist Kim Deal
- and the drummer, David Lovering
totally rocked my socks off (like Jack Black would say). Frank Black shocked me with his vocal (screaming) abilities, giving raw, wild energy to the songs, swinging an acoustic guitar during a song and accidentaly knocking off the microphone, but he also amazed me how he sang the softer, melodic stuff; Joey produced some wildest guitar sounds ever, attacking and shaking the guitar like an animal, rocking the amp, playing with his beer can...; David swinging high with his drumsticks; Kim keeping the groove with the simple bass lines, always smiling, and adding the magic with angel-like background vocals... WOW!

The music is still today after two decades totally unique, very catchy and melodic with both acoustic and heavy guitars and some cool effects.
Add some also totally unique and sometimes creepy lyrics by Frank Black and there you have it - the biggest underground band, a cult band, a band that influenced the most influental rock band of the 90's.

The concert alone is well worth the money, but there's also a lot of other goodies:
- the music videos
- a nice short documentary about the Pixies with interviews with famous people, including the bandmembers (except Kim)
- "on the road" footage, capturing some cool moments while on tour, including lots of songs on various festivals and other venues.

Defintely worth every penny if you like the Pixies, and of course, A MUST for real fans.

One more thing... if you're new to the Pixies, every song gets better and better each time you hear it, and you'll be changing your favourite song quite often. Which is a good thing - you won't get bored with the Pixies anytime soon.:)

5 out of 5 stars I am convinced of their importance.......2005-09-13

I initially saw this played on the now defunct TRIO satellite channel. At the time, I owned a once played copy of Doolittle. After hearing all of the commentary on the importance of the Pixies to modern music, seeing the powerful (yet physically still) nature of their live performance, and seeing some of the music videos for the first time, I was convinced that Doolittle was worth a genuine try.

Yes, the Brits in "Gouge" do some kissing-up, but you can tell (they're not actors, after all), that it is truly sincere. Bowie and Bono, while neither one is half the artist of B.F., do seem especially informed and heart-felt in their analysis and praise. How humbling it must be to have so many renowned artists and journalists praise your work ! This is a good primer for further study of the band - it was for me.

I'm in a cover band (as David Bowie says in the DVD - everyone who's heard Pixies, forms a band), since I feel a strong urge to try to cover Pixies' music. The other members didn't know of their work, so I am going to use this DVD as a seminar on the Pixies' work. I watch it regularly, for personal inspiration - I can't get enough. Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) says that you must be "that good for a start" - we are going to give it a shot.

I was in high school when the more favored 3 CDs were published, but alas, was never exposed. A year and a half later, I am so glad that I saw, and now own this DVD - most importantly I "discovered" the greatness of Pixies. I even went to see them at a small local venue in June 2005 (got Kim's autograph!). I will be buying the "Sellout" DVD, when released in Oct2005. I feel that this is a very satisfying DVD, and a DEAL ( no pun intended) for the price of < $20 - a quarter what I paid for my wife and I to see them live.

By the way, to the author of one of these commentaries - the name of the album is SURFER Rosa, not SISTER Rosa - you seem like you know what you're talking about, bone machine head! LONG LIVE THE PIXIES ! ! !

4 out of 5 stars Good pre-DOOLITTLE concert footage with good extras.......2005-07-17

I very much enjoyed this disc, though I have to confess that I was disappointed with the concert that forms the heart of this DVD being a pre-DOOLITTLE one. SISTER ROSA was a very, very great album, but I have always liked DOOLITTLE even more, so my disappointment reflects only my own preference. I knew they wouldn't, but I kept yearning for them to cut into "Debaser," or "Here Comes Your Man," "Gouge Away," or "Monkey Gone to Heaven." The only song to appear on DOOLITTLE is "Hey." Oddly enough, I found them far more enjoyable overall on the recent "Austin City Limits" concern on PBS, where they proved to be extraordinarily sharp, perhaps due to their "World Tour" that has consisted as much in appearances at block parties and college campuses as normal music venues. Even the material from SISTER ROSA and COME ON PILGRIM was tighter.

Nonetheless, the concert footage here is vintage Pixies, and I can't imagine any Pixies fan being disappointed with that. The disc also collects all their music videos, which I frankly find disappointing. I truly think the Pixies are one of the two or three most important American bands from 1987 to the present, but while they were repeatedly taking music to new extremes, their videos never were. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes video feature. Many of the reviewers here seem to dislike the "Gouge Away" documentary, where a group of primarily British musicians are interviewed about the significance of the Pixies, along with interview with band members. Personally, I liked the documentary, though it didn't provide any deep insights. The Pixies were always more popular and acclaimed in Britain and Europe than in the United States, so I didn't mind the EU slant on things. Though many in the US clearly "got" the Pixies, they tragically were never as popular here as they deserved. Prophets are often not honored in their own country. I will add that if a fan has not seen any photos of Charles Thompson aka Black Franciscus aka Frank Black aka Frank Black Franciscus recently, the interview footage could come as something of a shock. The boy definitely has emerged as one of the most rotund figures in the history of rock, right up there with folks like Leslie West and Lowell George.

I don't think this can be considered a definitive Pixies DVD, but for now it is all we have, and I'm at least grateful it exists. I would frankly prefer that the "Austin City Limits" concert be released as well. It was a better performance that covers all their works and not just SISTER ROSA and COME ON PILGRIM material. I don't know if anyone has been there to produce video, but I would be fascinated to see a DVD capturing their career since reforming. They have new material, but my understanding is that it might be released over the Internet instead of as an album (I heard Billy Corgan in an interview on Chicago's local NPR station say that he might do the same thing, since he and others think the music industry might be moving to cut out the record companies entirely--no great loss since the musicians make almost all of their money playing live). Also, they have largely avoided playing at normal music venues, instead prefering places like block parties. For some reason, it seems entirely appropriate. They never have been your normal rock and roll band. Why start now?
