Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71

Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71

Starring:Ike & Tina Turner

Product Type: DVD

Editorial Review:
Description
One of the most dynamic R&B duos of the '60s and early '70s, Ike and Tina Turner were a force to be reckoned with. Their live shows, nothing short of legendary, were high-octane performances of carefully orchestrated music from Ike turner combined with the raw sexual energy of vocalist Tina Turner. This spectacular CD/DVD set is from Holland in 1971, during the peak of Ike & Tina's tumultuous career.

Although Star Trek: The Motion Picture had been a box-office hit, it was by no means a unanimous success with Star Trek fans, who responded much more favorably to the "classic Trek" scenario of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Inspired by the "Space Seed" episode of the original TV series, the film reunites newly promoted Admiral Kirk with his nemesis from the earlier episode--the genetically superior Khan (Ricardo Montalban)--who is now seeking revenge upon Kirk for having been imprisoned on a desolated planet. Their battle ensues over control of the Genesis device, a top-secret Starfleet project enabling entire planets to be transformed into life-supporting worlds, pioneered by the mother (Bibi Besch) of Kirk's estranged and now-adult son. While Mr. Spock mentors the young Vulcan Lt. Saavik (then-newcomer Kirstie Alley), Kirk must battle Khan to the bitter end, through a climactic starship chase and an unexpected crisis that will cost the life of Kirk's closest friend. This was the kind of character-based Trek that fans were waiting for, boosted by spectacular special effects, a great villain (thanks to Montalban's splendidly melodramatic performance), and a deft combination of humor, excitement, and wondrous imagination. Director Nicholas Meyer (who would play a substantial role in the success of future Trek features) handles the film as a combination of Moby Dick, Shakespearean tragedy, World War II submarine thriller, and dazzling science fiction, setting the successful tone for the Trek films that followed. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars KHAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-06

Right from a beginning that is as tense and shocking as ever there was in sci fi, to an ending that keeps you guessing while both pleasing and dismaying loyal Star Trek Fans, this movie was and IS an accomplishment to be celebrated.

Star Trek the Motion Picture (movie one) was a less than pleasing transition from the small screen to the big screen. Wrath of Khan is not just a STEP up, it is a LEAP up.... it is LEAPS AND BOUNDS above its predecessor and dare I say the movies that followed.

None of the series of movies had this level of conflict, tension and emotion. None had this amount of action and NONE... NOT ONE of them... had Ricardo Montalban!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Star Trek movie??.......2007-05-24

After being dissapointed with the first Star Trek motion picture, I was greatly surprised with Star Trek II. The original crew appear to be back in pretty much top form. I felt they were a bit rusty in the first film as far as acting together as a group. There are also some key new characters added that bring a whole lot to the film as well. The overall plot is much better than that of the first film too. It was brilliant to bring back a character from an episode of the orginal series, Khan, and really make it work. If you're just a casual fan of the Star Trek series and haven't watched many of the original episodes, you might want to get your hands on the "Space Seed" episode. You, by no means, NEED to watch this episode before viewing this film to understand it, but it might make you aprreciate it a little more in the long run. But if you're a fan to begin with, its basically like watching one of your favorite Star Trek episodes, except on a greater scale. In my opinion, if you're looking for the definitive Star Trek movie, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars The standard by which all other Trek movies must be measured!.......2007-05-19

The Wrath of Kahn is , simply put, a classic. I have watched this movie more than 100 times since it's release in 1982 and it just keeps getting better with time. So many quotable lines for Trek fans too. There is nothing I do not like about this movie. On this special edition you do get a few extra and extended scenes. The die hard purist in me thinks they interfere somewhat with the pacing, but hearing Spock say "Fascinating" (in a comic drone) after Kirk tells him about his son is priceless. The included extras are all very cool. Personally I would have wished for a bit more about the making of the special effects but even THAT part is pretty darn good! Ace direction by Nicholas Meyer, and simply THE BEST score EVER for a Star Trek movie by James Horner help make The Wrath of Kahn the de facto standard for Star Trek movies and one that STILL has not been topped! The price is so low they are giving it away and the dvd transfer is top notch. You can NOT go wrong with this film!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST STAR TREK EVER.......2007-05-01

This one was the first Star Trek movie that I ever watched in 1986 when I was 7 years old... I REMEBER I LOVED IT, even more than Star Wars, the Enterprise it looks so cool, the uniforms, the story, the action, the special effects, but overall I never forget that I felt that those people are really friends, and I felt so sad when, well u know, after the sacrifice of one of the crew members

In fact, I bought 2 copies of this movie, this one it is my favorite movie ever, and the special edition is plenty of really nice stuff, so, If you want to buy one of the better sci fi movie ever, you MUST BUY this one Star Trek movie, I know you will like it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beam me up!.......2007-04-28

This flik is the first in three linked episodes (II, III, IV) of the 6 Star Trek Movies. Both this movie and the first Trek movie have their roots in the 60s TV series.

The first movie is more or less a redo of the Voyager TV episode (only on a much more grand scale along with all the technology special effect bells and whistles). Instead of being a redo of a TV episode, Trek II is a continuation of the Khan episode some 15 years later. The Genesis project plays a role in II and III and the aftermath (when Kirk and crew try to return to earth) is the stage for IV.

Not to spoil the plot (as if we all have not seen this at least once!), this film, like the other Trek movies is fun to watch because of the on screen chemistry of the cast. Like the 60s TV series Bonanza, each film is a morality play. I enjoyed the TV series in the 60s (though now it does look a bit campy and dated, but still a hoot to watch). For a transition from the little to the big screen, I think they did a good job. They maintain the esential elements of the TV show while broadening the scope for the larger venue. The acting is just as good and the screen plays are excellent.

I had not watched these fliks for perhaps 10 years and recently dusted off my VCR tapes and have viewed all six. It is nice seeing Kirstie Alley as a babe instead of a TV diet commercial balloon. When these films first came out, I thought Kirk and crew were really aging. Now that it is 25 to 30 years later, it is amazing how young they look!

Baseball movies seem like a sure thing, combining the drama of the game with positive values. So it's too bad this pleasant film takes the field in the most superficial way. Henry, the worst player in Little League, suffers an injury that miraculously heals as the strongest pitching arm in the world. His life becomes a kid's dream with a career in the Majors, but nothing really happens. His strength cannot hide his lack of skill, yet audiences love him, probably to support subplots such as the team being rescued from bankruptcy and Mom's boyfriend turning bad. Small attempts are made to create character, relationships, and themes. Gary Busey, as a burnt-out pitcher named Rocket, finds a family. Henry learns the importance of being a kid, not to mention a surprisingly cynical lesson about stardom, when Rocket says, "One day your gift will be gone." Mom learns Henry always respected her and Henry learns to rely on himself when his "power" disappears in the climactic game. Sadly, a fine cast including Dan Hedaya, John Candy, and '40s comedian Eddie Bracken is given nothing to work with. Worse yet, director Daniel Stern plays Phil, who suffered a head injury that left him an insult to comedy fans as well as the mentally challenged. Kids who love baseball films where kids are the heroes and the comedy is dumb will enjoy sitting through Rookie of the Year, but I wouldn't expect them to pull it off the shelf too often. --Lloyd Chesley

Description

When the cast is removed from his severely broken arm, clumsy 12-year old Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is shocked to find his arm has become a 100 mile per-hour thunderbolt. His throw from the bleachers directly to home plate alerts the last place Chicago Cubs and before you can shout "play ball!" he is signed as their new ace pitcher. With a few pointers from an aging star pitcher (Gary Busey) young Henry actually manages to pull of the impossible.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Coming-Of-Age Baseball Fantasy. Excellent For Family Viewing. Performances Are Top-Notch. Score Is Rousing........2007-05-29

This adorable baseball fantasy is a home run with families. Thomas Ian Nichols (before he went on to racy roles, a la the "American Pie" movies) is a treat to watch as [...] Henry Rowengartner, an average kid who becomes a phenom pitcher for the Chicago Cubs after a freak accident. Gary Busey ("Lethal Weapon," "Under Siege") does a fine job as the washed-up pitcher who takes Henry under his wing. Daniel Stern (who also directed) is a riot. Rated PG for some thematic elements and brief language.

5 out of 5 stars For all baseball fans.......2007-01-10

For any kid who has wanted to be in the big leagues, this is their movie. By accident, Henry ends up with an amazing arm, and the Chicago Cubs want him to play for them. He does, and helps lead them to success. It's really movie for the whole family to watch together. (The only thing that I didn't like was the use of "Oh my God" during the movie a fair number of times.)

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find.......2006-11-28

Why is this movie so hard to find on DVD? It is one of my absolute fav's from when I was a kid. I still find myself saying some of the cheeseball lines from this flick. I love all the different names the coach gives Henry, hey Ravenbooser! hey Gardenhoser! Great stuff.

To cite Gimme Shelter as the greatest rock documentary ever filmed is to damn it with faint praise. This 1970 release benefits from a horrifying serendipity in the timing of the shoot, which brought filmmakers Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin aboard as the Rolling Stones' tumultuous 1969 American tour neared its end. By following the band to the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco for a fatally mismanaged free concert, the Maysles and Zwerin wound up shooting what's been accurately dubbed rock's equivalent to the Zapruder film. The cameras caught the ominous undercurrents of violence palpable even before the first chords were strummed, and were still rolling when a concertgoer was stabbed to death by the Hell's Angels that served as the festival's pool cue-wielding security force.

By the time Gimme Shelter reached theater screens, Altamont was a fixed symbol for the death of the 1960s' spirit of optimism. The Maysles and Zwerin used that knowledge to shape their film: their chronicle begins in the editing room as they cut footage of the Stones' Madison Square Garden performance of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and from there moves toward Altamont with a kind of dreadful grace. The songs become prophecies and laments for broken faith ("Wild Horses"), misplaced devotion ("Love in Vain"), and social collapse ("Street Fighting Man" and, of course, "Sympathy for the Devil"). Along the way, we glimpse the folly of the machinations behind the festival, the insularity of life on the concert trail, and the superstars' own shell-shocked loss of innocence.

Gimme Shelter looks into an abyss, partly self-created, from which the Rolling Stones would retreat--but unlike its subject, the filmmakers don't blink. --Sam Sutherland

Description

Called "the greatest rock film ever made," this landmark documentary follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 U.S. tour. When 300,000 members of the Love Generation collided with a few dozen Hell's Angels at San Francisco's Altamont Speedway, direct cinema pioneers David and Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin immortalized on film the bloody slash that transformed a decade's dreams into disillusionment.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RESTORATION! GREAT DOCUMENTARY OF THE GREATEST BAND EVER!.......2007-06-29

This documentary movie is legendary, but now that Criterion has performed a complete restoration of visuals and audio, it is really amazing! I still prefer some live versions of songs on this DVD then any other live versions released! Watching this restored film on my 10 foot screen is like going back in a time machine to this insane concert. The Stones are in great form for the most part and there are some interesting extras. If you are a fan and do not own this.....BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Chilling, Thrilling, and Impossible to Forget.......2007-05-29

This is not merely one great rock documentary -- it is one of the finest pieces of documentary filmmaking I have ever seen. The directors and cinematographer have truly captured the wildness, the drugs, the sense of abandon, hope, mystery, fear, violence, and joy -- all of it wrapped in a remarkable rock music event marred by the Hells Angels' tragic violence.

The sense of foreboding as the filmmakers capture the haphazard planning for this free Altamont concert is palpable -- I love the way the Stones' lawyer, Melvin Belli (wearing a very wide tie), attempts to negotiate a last minute concert site. There are so many impossible to forget images -- the Stones' listening to a play back of "Wild Horses" at Muscle Shoals studio; the stoned-out kids moving from amazement to horror as the violence unfolds; the boys listening to Sonny Barger call in to a radio station and justify the violence because the fans were "messing with our bikes."

There is great onstage concert footage too -- the Flying Burrito Brothers kick it off in fine fashion, then Tina Turner turns in a sexy performance, practically deep-throating the microphone, but by the time Jefferson Airplane gets on stage you just know something is about to go very, very wrong.

As the violence unfolds, to the onstage antics of "Sympathy for the Devil," things get very weird. Mick, onstage, calling for cool. Fans crying, mouthing to Mick "why?" silently, Keith and the boys still riffing as the beatings mount -- all captured brilliantly by the filmmakers.

The final piece -- Mick and the boys watching the concert footage in the studio -- is equally priceless and equally revealing.

Bravuro filmmaking!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL MOVIES EVER MADE. .......2007-05-29

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic Rock n' Roll concert movie entitled "GIMME SHELTER" by the band that millions of fans and critics the world over call THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD. I give you England's second most favorite sons and one of Britain's pride and joy's, T-H-E R-O-L-L-I-N-G S-T-O-N-E-S! "GIMME SHELTER" is a Maysles Films Inc. Production which was originally released in 1970 and directed by David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic film or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems of all-time. THE STONES have also delivered some of Rock's all-time greatest live performances ever. THE STONES 1969 World Tour is considered by many Rock critics to be one of the all-time greatest tours ever. THE STONES 1969 World Tour was a complete triumph for the band. However, in the end, THE STONES 1969 World Tour would also prove to be one of the most disastrous, tragic and most fatal tours in the history of Rock n' Roll.

Altamont 1969 was the last choice to hold a free concert just outside the Bay area. The first choice was Golden Gate Park, than Sears Point Raceway before finally settling on Altamont Speedway. Seeing the movie, in my opinion, this free concert was doomed from the beginning. When you have lawyers and legal B.S. to deal with, you will have nothing but chaos in the end as the movie will attest.

Mr. Ralph "Sonny" Barger is and always will be the President of the Oakland Chapter of the Hells Angels. He may not remember me but I met him years ago through a mutual friend while living in California in the 1980's. Our mutual friend is a member of either the Sacramento Chapter or the San Jose Chapter of the Hells Angels. Mr. Ralph "Sonny Barger now resides in the Phoenix, Arizona area and is now currently a member of the Cave Creek Chapter of the Hells Angels. Sonny describes the hell that went on at Altamont not only in the film but in his book. His descriptions make you feel like you were actually there and at the same time, make you wish that you were never there. To actually capture someone on film being stabbed to death in front of the stage during THE STONES concert before our very eyes is beyond disbelief.

THE ROLLING STONES, on the other hand, were cocky and arrogant, and for a very good reason. The band was on cloud nine, victorious from the success of the 1969 World Tour. Who wouldn't be cocky and arrogant knowing that their band was the greatest show on earth at that very moment. However, by the time December 1969 rolled around the corner, the band was unorganized and many of THE STONES entourage and personnel were making decisions without THE STONES consent or approval. When you see the film closely, you will notice right off the bat that many decisions were being made without THE STONES knowledge. Again, when you have many people involved such as law enforcement, lawyers and numerous personnel within THE STONES organization, there's bound to be a mess up somewhere along the way. As the saying goes, "IN 1969, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN. ONE NIGHT AT ALTAMONT, IT DID!

When THE STONES took the stage at Altamont on that dark and dangerous December night in 1969, little did they know that it would be one of the most horrific nights in the band's lives. I'm sure that THE STONES must have wondered if they would ever get out of there alive. I know that I would have.

When bands such as THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, SANTANA and THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS took the stage, the atmosphere was extremely violent resulting in fights and beatings taking place everywhere on site. JEFFERSON AIRPLANE'S own Marty Balin was beaten up as he jumped in the audience to break up a fight in front of the stage.

It was clearly obvious that the violent atmosphere was going to get worse as time rolled on. Rather than talk further concerning this legendary film, I would definitely hope that all of you readers out there will purchase this DVD movie and watch it for yourself in case you do not believe it. Believe me when I tell you that everything I am saying to you in this review REALLY happened. This film is by far, one of the greatest Rock n' Roll films ever made. When you watch it, you will see what I mean.

Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! R.I.P. BRIAN JONES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Documents one crazy concert.......2007-05-16

This all happened years before I was born so it's not surprising it took me so long to check out the documentary. After all this time, I'm glad that I finally did. And I'm glad that someone filmed it all so that I could.

Gimme Shelter is an amazing documentary. It starts out a bit slow, with the Stones watching footage of their concerts and listening to tapes of people calling into radio stations to talk about the event. Seeing their reactions is pretty moving, and just to watch Mick Jagger do anything is pretty interesting in itself.

As the footage of the concert itself unfolds, it starts out looking like one of the best events ever. A free concert with huge stars and all the drugs you can handle... but then things take a turn for the worse. And the amazing thing is that it is all on camera. The Hell's Angels attacking the crowd, and the crowd attacking the Hell's Angels... and Mick Jagger pleading with everyone to just "be cool".

What a stunning documentary. Check it out if you're interested in rock, history, or just plain good documentaries.

4 out of 5 stars Dramatic Documentary.......2007-05-07

The concert is hard to focus on as the spotlight turns to the murder of one of the concert goers, after that it's hard to appreciate the Rolling Stones performance.

Ahhh, the memories, I SO wanted powers like Tia and Tony had..to be able to lift objects with your mind, unlock doors with a single thought, be able to talk and understand animals...etc...
These two were among my favorite Disney movies, GLAD to see them released on DVD and both available as a set, whoohoo! NOW will you PLEASE release some of the other popular Disney movies from the 70's? (Like 'The Child of Glass?)

4 out of 5 stars The two-for is a great deal.......2007-05-08

I was excited to see that I could purchase these two classics in one. Great nostalgia for those- like myself- who grew up watching these movies. I favor the sequel, but they are both delightful memories.

5 out of 5 stars Two great films.......2007-04-25

These two movies are Disney classics, especially the first one, "Escape to Witch Mountain" - I saw this movie back when I was a kid and it was one of my favorite movies (still is). It follows the story of two orphans named Tia and Tony who have extraordinary powers. Not knowing where they came from, they set out following a map in the only belonging that they have ever owned- Tia's starcase. Along the way there are several men after them, one of which is a ruthless man out to use them and their powers to his twisted advantage.

The second movie, "Return to Witch Mountain" is weaker than the first, but still worth the watch. Tia and Tony are much older in this one, but much more comfortable in their own skin because they know who they are and where they came from. Tony is kidnapped and brainwashed/controlled by a ruthless scientist who commands him to use his power while Tia gets the help from a local street gang full of delinquents to save him.

The movies are loosely based on a novel by Alexander Key which is also titled "Escape to Witch Mountain." I recently found out that he also wrote "Return to Witch Mountain" but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

The first novel is worth the read but VERY different from the movies. For example, Tia is mute and does not speak. She communicates with Tony telepathically. They are also older in the book than they are in the movie. The orphanage that they go to at the beginning of the movie is more so for juvenile delinquents in the book and filled with bullies and a pretty mean caretaker. If you liked these movies, I recommend checking Ebay for the books!

I'd give "Escape to Witch Mountain" 5 stars and "Return to Witch Mountain" 4. They are both classics!

4 out of 5 stars Witch Mountain.......2007-04-11

watching these 2 disney classics will take you back to your child hood

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully appealing love story.......2007-05-12

With an amazingly tender and gentle performance by John Candy and a perfect portrayal of a protective mother by Maureen O'Hara, this movie is an appealing love story. The mother, the son and the girlfriend are all individually represented beautifully and all melded together in a most delightful movie.

5 out of 5 stars only the lonely.......2007-03-08

John Candy is a very funny actor, especially with the cast he is working with in this movie. Very hearwarming movie.

4 out of 5 stars One of John Candy's best!.......2007-02-14

Well, it's really extremely '80's in feel, but still a classic. If you liked Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, if you like John Candy, or if you can't stand your mother-in-law, this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars My look at the movie.......2007-01-23

John candy was great!!!
The movie is funny and heartwarming

5 out of 5 stars I'm Glad That They Have Finally Put This Movie On DVD!.......2005-10-08

Only The Lonely is a good romantic comedy type movie that has a great cast that includes, John Candy, Ally Sheedy, Maureen O'Hara, Anthony Quinn and Milo O'Shea. The movie is about a Irish American cop who lives in Boston with his over bearing overly opinionated mother and he falls in love with a woman who is mother doesn't like. This is a cute movie and I'm glad that they finally have put it on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC.......2007-06-10

A must see.I just happened to see this movie on tv years ago.I ordered the dvd watched it with my girlfriend and we both really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Cross Creek.......2007-05-14

This is a great movie about the author of the Yearling and Jacobs Ladder and how she started as a writter and all the problems that she had starting her career. I have been to her home in Florida and it was enjoyable to see this movie.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF "On Location" filmed movies.......2007-05-12

A great movie about a very interesting woman and great film-making; filming in the non-familiar areas of Florida, is pure delight. Scruffy out of the way Florida scenes are just wonderful. One really gets the feel of how it must have been in the 20's when Marjorie first came to the area and was inspired to write her books. The special features are really good also!!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Movie - Very Relaxing.......2007-05-05

I adored this movie along with everyone in my family. Perfect movie to watch together! There's every emotion: laughter, suspense, sadness, love of friend and lover, joy, and celebration of life!

This movie will draw you into its arms and give you a hug. Great for men and women.

Peter Coyote is a stand out! you'll recognize his voice as I did from documentaries and other narrated films. He's an incredible actor.

Rip Torn does a spectacular job as a "cracker" who's taken his family to live in rural Florida. His daughter is the inspiration of the author's, Ms Rawlings', wonderful novel, The Yearling.

The viewer is drawn back to the Depression Era through a wondrous camera lens right in the location of the actual events. Perhaps it has been cleaned up a bit from those difficult times, yet it's so great seeing the dusty old cars and fashions, the barefoot kids, and the primitive life of a bygone era.

The book's story line from which this movie is based has been slightly altered in the film, but overall it somehow captures the same message, "be yourself in pursuing your dreams, and you'll achieve them."

5 out of 5 stars A "Cross" to bare.......2007-04-02

This is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Everything about this film says "beauty". From the beautiful storyline to beautiful scenery this film tugs at your heartstrings. Mary Steenburgen is perfect (and yes beautiful!) as Marjorie Rawlings who seeks to discover her true calling in the Florida backwoods. The music is....well beautiful. I wish a soundtrack was available for this film, as I would buy it in a second. By the way, this film received a 5 minute standing ovation at Sundance. Why? Because it delivers the goods. If you are looking for a film to "fill your heart", you found it. Watch and enjoy. I hope I run into Mary Steenburgen one day (quite possible here in L.A.) as I want to tell her how great and beautiful she was in this film (it's important that she know!!!)

Following the release of MadTV's complete first season, this generous three-hour single-disc collection of sketches, spoofs, and parodies from the long-running series' three most recent seasons seems a little slapdash. There is, for example, no opening-credit sequence, so a newcomer to the series might never know just who is doing the dead-on Ellen DeGeneres imitation in the season 9 sketch "Letters to Lincoln." This collection includes some of MadTV's most inspired cross-parodies, including "Oprah: Jackass" and a pitch-perfect reality TV collision between The Osbournes, The Anna Nichole Show, Cops, and even a "Jay Walking" Jay Leno. Also included is one of MadTV's most epic movie parodies, the "Lords of the Bling: The Two Ta-Tas" as well as "The Honeymooners 2003," still in black and white, but with much coarser language and a terror alert. Sketches featuring such singularly annoying characters as hyper-child Stuart (Michael McDonald), ditzy Dot (Stephnie Weir), and throat-clearing Lorraine are a matter of taste, although the wildly enthusiastic studio audience greets their entrances as if they were rock-star royalty). --Donald Liebenson

this compilation of their different seasons was just what i've been waiting for. however my favorite comedian, Ms. Swan is barely present with only one skit. Perhaps Comedy Central should think of making a special dvd made of her sketches...but in general, this is great product to have...Mad Tv is always great and funny.

I disagree with the person who said this collection is terrible. Season 9 is the best set of MadTv sketches I've seen. There is something for almost everyone (past childhood), if you enjoy clarity, good writing and GREAT performances. It's wierd that they released Season One, this collection from Seasons 8, 9, and 10--and that's it. Is that all really all there is to buy? Come on!!

Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

8 weeks to get this???????

Sorry, but I find that rather remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars Ike's Story.......2007-04-01

Tom Selleck is absolutely convincing as General "Ike" Eisenhower, leader of the Allied Expeditionary Force counting down the days to the invasion of Europe in the spring of 1944. This made-for-cable movie has solid production values, authentic period detail, and a cast that recreates the many strong personalities Ike had to manage to pull off the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Montgomery; American Generals Bradley, Patton, and Smith; and French self-appointed savior DeGaulle are authentically captured as contending parties in the final planning for the invasion.

Above all else, the movie portrays the enourmous pressures on Ike to balance the needs of the Allied military forces against challenges of weather, terrain, resources, and politics. The final days of the countdown, as Ike waits for a break in the weather that may never come, and considers the human costs of a botched operation, are incredibly tense.

Among other highlights of the movie: Ike's productive but sometimes trying relationship with Churchill, who understood the realities of the war but was ocassionally swept away by his own enthusiasms. Another is Ike's necessity to discipline an American staff officer who talks out of turn about the invasion and must be sent home in disgrace. Still another is Ike's visit to an American airborne unit on the ever of the invasion.

This short movie is highly recommended to fans of the World War II genre and to fans of Tom Selleck.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Lacks Muscle.......2007-03-16

Magnum PI as Ike? Credit to Tom Selleck: his understated Ike portrayal is far more complex and engaging than the bland, amiable Ike conveyed by most Ike biographies. Selleck's performance truly shone.

Generally, the film is evenly paced and provides a cursory but informative view of one aspect of high command in WW2. Yet it has flaws. For instance, the supporting cast is, frankly, somewhat weak (except for the splendid actor who played pesky Monty). The film also deviates from some plainly known facts. Bedell Smith is portrayed as a softie sounding board and feel-good chum, not as the ruthless, vain, and superbly efficient SOB he was. Putting those quibbles aside, the film allows an enjoyable, visual break for anyone tired of reading history.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Magnum as Ike?.......2006-11-10

At first I thought the idea was a little odd, but Tom Selleck proves he is a fine actor of unappreciated caliber. You come away from watching this movie with a better appreciation of Selleck's acting abilities and with a sense of what Eisenhower went through during those final days counting down to D-Day.
Well researched and accurate, and wonderfully filmed and acted.

5 out of 5 stars AN ABSORBING LOOK AT THE ROLE OF MILITARY LEADERSHIP IN WAR, AND A STUNNING PORTRAYAL BY TOM SELLECK.......2006-09-26

Tom Selleck shows extraordinary depth and subtlety in this examination of military leadership and the costs of excercising it- both in terms of casualties and in terms of personal self-criticism and doubt, and the demons that haunt one who must order other men to their deaths. Eisenhower is largely a stranger to the last couple of generations of Americans- a name that appears on the list of Presidents, but a name almost as obscure as Millard Fillmore to the young. I wish more people- and especially young people- could've seen this masterful portrayal of leadership, patriotism and sacrifice. I was pleasantly and completely surprised by the quality of this film, and I give it my highest recommendation.

This underrated film by director Paul Mazursky stars Richard Dreyfuss as an underemployed actor who is offered a great acting role, though outside of New York. Still, beggars can't be choosers and he accepts--only to discover that the part involves impersonating the dictator of Parador, a troubled Central American country on the verge of revolution. The dictator has died, but his chief adviser (Raul Julia) doesn't want that news to come out; he'd rather continue the charade that the big guy is still in charge. And to his surprise, the actor discovers that he enjoys the acting challenge, until he figures out that Julia is positioning himself to take over as the country's true strongman. Naturally, Dreyfuss also discovers that, aside from enjoying the perks of power (including the late dictator's toothsome mistress, Sonia Braga), he actually has the power to do some good--to Julia's chagrin. Dreyfuss captures the actor's insecurity, while Julia is hilarious as the wild-eyed adviser to whom torture is second nature. --Marshall Fine
