Rarely have an artist and a visual approach been as well matched as they are in this hour-long package of videos and concert performances featuring singer-songwriter Gillian Welch and her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings. Welch's rootsy, all-acoustic music is pure, plain, and simple, old-sounding if not especially old-fashioned; fittingly, both the three videos and nine live songs here ("Revelator" is seen and heard in both formats), all from 2001, are in black and white and similarly free of props, effects, or any other kind of artifice. Most of the material is her own, with covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, and bluegrass legend Bill Monroe rounding out the program. Not the liveliest or most uplifting music around, perhaps, but Welch fans will, well, revel in this tasteful presentation of her work. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars its growing on me... .......2007-05-09

trying to increase my GW collection and this one's pretty good. They have such a mournful sound, but its kind of soothing at the same time. Love the close harmonies.

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but I really liked it.......2007-01-19

Saw Gillian Welch on "Austin City Limits" and was intrigued. She was doing the title song of this CD. Checked into it. Bought all three of her CDs. They are very good but out of the ordinary. She may be an acquired taste, but it is worth the effort. Recommend her music highly.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Lose With Welch and Rawlings.......2007-01-15

I bought this dvd only knowing three of the songs on it, which caused me to be a little hesitant since there are a ton of performers out there who will leave a bad impression if you see them live before listening to an album. That is not the case with this dvd. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings sound just as amazing live as on their albums. To be honest, I think they sound better live.

The entire dvd is filmed in black and white, which somehow works very well. There is some footage of Welch and Rawlings live as well as some studio footage. There aren't any extras on this dvd, so don't be disappointed if you were expecting interviews or other goodies.

If you know even one song on this dvd, you should buy it. You won't be disappointed in any way.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Music Video DVDs EVER.......2005-11-11

Okay, first off, if you are a Gillian Welch and David Rawlings fan then there is no doubt that you will love this DVD. Totally in black & white; it adds so much to the flavor of the music. This DVD could not be improved on and I never grow tired of watching it. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this video. The studio sessions and live concerts are absolutely perfect. I wish that they would put out a dozen more in the same style. The only thing that I would suggest though, is that they would give David Rawlings some billing on the cover. They are an excellent team and I just think that fact should be acknowledged on the cover. Once you put the DVD in the player you will be spellbound.

5 out of 5 stars If I were the all-powerful lord of the universe ..........2005-10-19

... I would kidnap David and Gillian and hold them hostage and force them to play me sad and beautiful songs every night, with harmonies so heartbreaking and tender they'd make me cry, and then they'd cry since they've been kidnapped by some maniac, taken from friends and family, and are never given a night off, and we'd all cry and cry while I command them: "Play slower! And sadder!" until it was just one note ... slow as mollasses ... perfect harmony ... high and lonesome ... true love and heartbreak ... all in the same neverending moment ...

Anyways, it'll probably never happen (probably ...), so this DVD is as close as I'll get to my private David and Gillian show. Compared to the studio albums, you can really see their chemistry on the stage, and you also get a taste of their knack for making cover songs their own, like Pocahontas. Pure high and lonesome love.
