4 out of 5 stars Great but not as good as it could have been.......2005-11-30

Peter Cetera; one of my favorite artists of all time. I bought this DVD soley based on the feedback here. Compared to the complaints about quality with other DVD concerts from Cetera I will confirm that there are defintely no glitches with this edition. You want quality this is it. (yeah I know the DVD sleeve looks cheesy though, made me think this was a cheapo production, but defintely don't judge a DVD by it's cover) The picture is super sharp and the sound is 5.1 and perfect! Another thing is his truly great songs are all represented here with a few from Chicago too. Even "B side" hits like "Have you ever been in love?" were good surpises. What I am a bit disappointed about is that this is a Symphony edition concert. I wasn't expecting that. I know Peter is older now and I guess this is a more mature sound. Don't get me wrong though, I am a huge PBS fan and LOVE symphony too. It's nice to hear a different style with orchestral arrangements of all our ol favorites but actually, it was a lil too mellow for me. It may be appropriate for some tracks but not all of them! I'm really missing the drums and electric guitar! I think they could have merged the orchestra with a lil bit of the ol Chicagoish sound to make it really come alive. Sorry I am an 80s addict. That being said I think everything else is perfect. Cetera sounds great but as said he is aging a bit. The backup singers boost his voice to that ol sound though. Amy's performances added as a bonus really makes this a value. Just be forewarned that it may not sound like what you're used to, but for me it'll remain in my collection as a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars DEMO QUALITY DISC.......2005-04-29

EXCELLENT AUDIO QUALITY ESPECIALLY THE AMY GRANT NUMBERS.LOW END IS TIGHT AND WELL DEFINED.I LIKE BOTH ARTISTS BUT THIS CONCERT SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE TO ANY AUDIOPHILE. SUGGUSTION: USE THX EQ TO DAMPEN SOME STRING AND VOCAL BRIGHTNESS ON THE CETERA NUMBERS.LIKE ANY GOOD LIVE RECORDING THERE IS PLENTY OF "AIR" BETWEEN THE INSTRUMENTS.PERFORMANCE IS TOP NOTCH;AMY GRANT IS SUPRISINGLY POWERFUL AND CETERA NOT ONLY HITS THE HIGHS BUT GAINS POWER IN THE UPPER REGISTER.VIDEO IS HI DEF BUT NOT ANAMORPHIC;STILL LOOKS GOOD WITH MODE PROCESSING.SLEEPER OF THE YEAR.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nice PBS Product.......2005-04-07

Being a Chicago fan (& all genre's of music in general), I decided to purchase "A&E's Chicago Live by Request" and Peter Cetera on "Soundstage" with Amy Grant. I missed Peter's voice on the Chicago DVD but it is very entertaining and a well done production and concert. Chicago has replaced Cetera with a very talented singer and musician who steps up to sing the selections originally voiced by Peter (& done very well). Below are my primary observations of the "Soundstage" DVD:

* The picture and sound quality are excellent. The concert is in Hi-Definition for a great presence on applicable equipment.

* Cetera still sings with his wonderfully familiar voice although it has definitely softened with age. The high notes are not quite hit but he still manages to stay true to the original songs (much like Elton John and Paul McCartney's aged voices; Elton 58, Paul 62 years old as of April 2005).

* There is virtually no interaction with the audience (except for a few quick "thank you's" and silly comments to the audience and fellow artists). It would have been nice to hear something related to what he was about to sing. I read similar reactions to his "Peter Cetera Live" DVD.

* Amy Grant is very good. I'm not a fan of Amy but she sings 3 solo songs that were very well chosen including one of 1991's big Pop hits "Baby Baby" and "El-Shaddai" from her first breakthrough album in Gospel in 1982. Each one is excellent and she is in fine form. A great way to begin this DVD. She also joins Cetera during his act to sing their hit duet "Next Time I Fall" from 1986.

* The backing instrumentalists are fantastic although they do give these songs a different spin. Instead of the Chicago brass section, piano, electric guitars and male background vocals, you hear them with a large string section, acoustic guitars, female backing, brass and piano. This is a nice sound for Pop, Rock and Classical enthusiasts.

* The DVD and/or concert is short. Most respectably produced music events are longer than 71 minutes (and less expensive). The song list is excellent but limited. You get a mix of solo hits and Chicago greats.

* There is a nice list of DVD Extra features but really only the 3 bonus tracks are meaningful. They are great extra tunes but being that you are only getting 9 Cetera songs on the main set (including the two duets) and 3 Grant songs, I would have expected them to add more video material to this disc such as archived footage of him.

Overall I give this a 4.5. Beautiful music, great audio/video quality and some fun nostalgia with a new twist.

3 out of 5 stars Peter Cetera Live DVD Review.......2005-06-12

Peter Cetera was one of the most well known popular music icons in the 1980's. If he'd only made amends with Chicago after his solo album, who knows what more of a legend Chicago would have grown to become. Peter recorded a few really good solo tracks: "Feels Like Heaven", "Glory of Love" and "Next Time I Fall" all are great songs. The problem is that Peter was not a young man when he joined Chicago, and his solo adventures have caught up to him. I saw Chicago play live in Las Vegas in 2004, and the atmosphere and overall effect was not the same without Peter. In his latter years, Peter does not have the same vocal and stage presence as he did with Chicago. This live DVD recorded in Salt Lake City in 2004 does Peter no justice. He recorded it with a 44 piece orchestra. I thought his songs along with an orchestra would be simply amazing, but they only hid the troubles Peter has keeping up with the man that recorded such great hits twenty years ago. Peter shows his 60 years of age by not being able to hold any of the notes he could during his glory years. He cuts off many of the lengthy vocal notes/harmonies abruptly due to lack of breath (probably due to age). What a shame! This is understandable, considering his age. This is not the Peter Cetera we used to know, and one that should still think about re-joining Chicago. That would be a tour and reconcilliation that would be very popular with the fans.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Concert...........2005-01-27

Maybe its because this is the 1st time ive ever heard Peter live but I thought the Orchestra did an amazing job!! Sure the stage didnt look good but I bought it to hear Peter's voice!!

This is a Must Buy DVD!!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance; Lackluster Production.......2004-12-28

This DVD, filmed during a Salt lake City concert as part of Peter Cetera's "symphony tour" in 2003 highlights this all-time great pop tenor with an excellent performance and the selection of songs, while backed by a small orchestra. Peter's voice is in fine form, and the adaptation of his songs (both Chicago hits and solo compositions)to an orchestral format works exceptionally well. The only problem lies with the visual presentation. Although the camerawork and video editing is very good, with only bright white lights illuminating the stage (with it's bare wood floor, looks like a high school auditorium stage) and no colored lights used for effect or any type of backdrop, visually, this is not a stimulating offering. But this does not detract much from the DVD because, as mentioned, Peter is in good voice and the mix of songs still makes this DVD a worthwhile purchase. The opening song, "No Explanation" (from the "Pretty Woman" film), is an excellent tune, and somewhat of a rarity, so it's inclusion is a treat. Other highlights include, "Remember the Feeling", a beautiful ballad from the mega hit album, "Chicago 17", and "Feels Like Heaven", a hit Peter had with Chaka Khan, whose part is quite adequately covered by back up singer Kim Keyes. Peter presents most of his hits with Chicago and as a solo artist and, again, the adaptation to orchestral presentation works exceptionally well. The highlight here is Peter Cetera as an artist: a very unique and gifted vocalist with a vast catalogue of excellent songs that make this DVD a worthwhile purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Beware of unauthorized DVDs.......2004-09-07

As noted by the reviewer above, the DVD that is already floating around is from Brazil and IS NOT and has not ever been authorized for release by Peter Cetera. I had purchased my copy through a Seller on eBay and he guaranteed that this was a licensed product, though Mr. Cetera has just posted that this is not true. You may read the following at his website www.petercetera.com under PC Speaks:

"09.06.04
Another thing!....People keep asking about what is an authorized CD or DVD.....ON the DVD thing, the only one that's authorized is the PBS one...Iv'e never authorized the final SLC one ,so as far as IM concerned it isn't.....As far as CD's,the ones on the site are real... I've seen certain ones around that aren't, including a certain greatest hits that used to be on the old site... Other than a few single songs on soundtrack CD's here and abroad I can't vouch for anything else...See Ya...pC"

5 out of 5 stars In Great Form........2007-02-23

Peter Cetera is quite honestly in my opinion is the classic vocalist of Chicago. Although he has went on to commercial success, he is very underestimated for his years with Chicago. I had seen a Behind the Music Episode of Chicago and although he didn't participate in the broadcast, the others were quick to point out that Terry Kath was much more important and his passing is what changed Chicago and in some ways ruined them. The band members gave very little mention of Cetera and only gave a nod at some of the commercial success they had with him. They apparantly hated the ballads he wrote, but these were some of the biggest hits Chicago ever had. "If you leave me now" was Chicago's 1st ever number one hit and this was a Cetera song. I've found Peter to be extreemly professional in his interviews regarding Chicago. It appears he never did want to leave but only take a break and work on his solo work but the Members gave him a choice of either tour or leave. It's pityful that they continue to hold a grudge over this. Chicago has not been the same since Cetera left and they have continued in some part attempting to re-create ballad type music in the style of Cetera. The DVD was professionaly produced, and I loved the arrangements of some of the older Chicago tunes. Some of the tunes appear to have been sung in a different key, but still are wonderful. Thank you Peter.
