Customer Reviews:
A great instructional video........2006-08-02
I've reviewed the other Koch SRV instructional video in its review section, but I'll repeat the gist of my comments here. This is top flight instructional material presented by in a very entertaining way by a guy who can play and who connects with the material. If you are an intermediate or better guitar player, you will be able to easily learn the key parts to the songs on the video with a little practice. I've bought all the videos that Greg Koch has put out and they are uniformly excellent.
Wow! Great help learning the SRV style!.......2006-03-25
I am a hack guitar player who picked up SRV tabs off the web. My frustration told me to throw away the crap tabs and buy this SRV DVD. I did and I am happy. I also picked up the corresponding SRV tab books for the songs covered on this DVD. (highly recommended) My only beef with this DVD is Hal Leonard's omission of tab sheets so you could work along with Greg. Greg is very solid in his teaching of SRV's licks but you need some knowledge of the blues and scales. If you want to learn Stevie licks and get a history lesson of where SRV's roots lie, this is an excellent product. Will buy the other one soon.
This DVD is awesome. .......2006-03-15
It has some great songs. They jam with the songs, they break them down slow, you can browse the chapters, flip over to the slow breakdown part, use AB loop on your DVD player and practice practice practice, it's the best way to learn a new song, IMO.
Greg Koch can play! AND he's not a annoying dork like some of these instructor videos have.
Excellent Instructional Video.......2006-03-13
Greg Koch is the MAN!!! Not only is he an amazing guitar player and teacher, he's hilarious. You won't be disappointed with this DVD. Well... until you actually start to try to play some of this stuff. It's harder than it looks/sounds. My hats off to Stevie. What a loss that he's no longer here, but at least we have Greg Koch offering some valuable insight into SRV's playing. In short, this DVD will open up your "blues" playing. It's an invaluable resource... and totally worth the price of admission.
This Instructor Can Play.......2005-08-07
If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I was a huge fan / admirer of Stevie Ray Vaughan.
And over the years, I've seen numerous transcriptions of his music in guitar magazines and have attempted to learn many of his songs.
However, this guy comes as close as is humanly possible to "replicating" the riffs of Stevie. He's a great guitar player and has obviously done his homework.
However, the one thing that can't be captured on an instructional DVD - and I throw this out not as a "negative" - is the "feel" behind Stevie's music.
Stevie's sound didn't come exclusively from his Number 1 Strat, Fender amps and heavy strings with the action set relatively high. Greg - the instructor on this tape - to his credit, uses a strat (tuned down a half a step a la SRV - and the same amps and effects pedals that SRV used - and comes close to getting the same sound.
But Stevie's sound came from his "attack" of the strings and his "in-your'face" attitude towards the blues. And no instructor can duplicate this. Stevie's sound came from his hands and his "soul".
I was reminding my wife that when we visited the Louvre many years ago, you would see many artists camped in front of a famous painting with their easel "copying" a painting of some master - i.e. Da Vinci or Rembrandt. And while many of them were great artists and to the untrained eye their work may be indistinguishable from the original, there would be a difference.
This DVD is similar. It comes very, very close, but there was only one SRV.
This DVD does pass along many insightful observations about SRV's style - i.e. SRV's Albert King like licks / his attack and popping style when attacking the strings - and, in my opinion, this was invaluable. However, for young guitarists, this DVD can save the player countless (possibly frustrating) hours trying to figure out how to play his licks armed with just a magazine.
I know that I came away with alot of new ideas and tools and I've spent years listening to Stevie and trying to learn his licks with guitar tab magazines.
If you're a fan of the blues and inparticular this gifted guitarist, I would not hesitate to recommend this DVD.
