It's a good bet that any American kid growing up in the '70s or '80s learned some elementary lesson from the seminal musical series Schoolhouse Rock!. Airing from 1973 to 1984 (and often revived), the ABC Saturday morning shorts effortlessly introduced kids to grammar, science, multiplication, money, and American history--three minutes at a time. In one smart, comprehensive 2-disc set, all 46 songs and plenty of extras are collected. The four creators developed the series slowly, a welcome diversion from their advertising agency jobs, and ended up taking home four Emmys over the years. The background material includes 10 audio commentaries and a making-of feature for the new song, "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College." The DVD subtitle option is a great bonus for those who need to know every word from such favorites as "Three Is a Magic Number," "Interjections," "I'm Just a Bill," and "Conjunction Junction." (Ages 3 and older) --Doug Thomas
Description
Conjunction Junction, what's your function? In the 70's and 80's, the catchy Schoolhouse Rock tunes taught millions of children the fundamentals of math, grammar, science, history and money. Relive the pop culture sensation with the SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK SPECIAL 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION DVD, which includes every song from the landmark series in a collectible 2-disc DVD. Among the over 50 tunes are such classics as "Conjunction Junction," "Three is a Magic Number," "I'm Just A Bill" and "Electricity, Electricity." The DVD features an all-new song about the Electoral College, "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote To College" written by the show's original creators.
Customer Reviews:
Learning is Still Fun!.......2007-07-08
My godchildren love the educational Schoolhouse Rock tunes today as much as I did decades ago. One problem... The DVD stops after each segment as opposed to playing straight through. I have found that children quickly loose interest in the time it takes to scroll through the menu to the next song... However not quite as rapidly as their parents become frustrated with the stop, scroll and click routine. Totally nostalgic, just as much fun for adults.
As good as I remember.......2007-07-07
My daughter loves it every bit as well as I did. I hope it helps her remember stuff like it did me!
YEA!.......2007-07-05
This is a piece of nostalgia I purchased for my 7-year-old. We've really had fun with it. And it's all there.
A must have for any home with children........2007-07-04
This DVD brought back so many memories. I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons in the '70s and would look forward to the top of the hour when the next Schoolhouse Rocks segment would play. I memorized them all over time. Later in life, when I couldn't remember a simple math or grammar rule, I would hum the tunes in my head until I got to the part I needed. These songs should be as well known as the ABC song. You just can't put a price on making learning fun.....or.....maybe you can....+ shipping and handling.
A Classic.......2007-07-04
I bought this for my daughter and I found myself singing right along after over 25 years. It's great. Truely an American classic.

Customer Reviews:
Great concert.......2007-07-08
In 2006, Bruce Springsteen and his backing group did a concert in Dublin, Ireland in November, 2006. And what a concert it is! Much of the focus is on his folk singing from his album in respect of Pete Seeger.
The backing group is very nice. We see guitars, other strings, and nice backing singing. The whole is, indeed, greater than its parts.
Springsteen treats these classic songs (e.g., "Old Dan Tucker," "We Shall Overcome," "When the Saints Come Marching In," "Jesse James") as well as other works (such as his own "Blinded by the Light") with respect. And that makes this a really interesting and compelling CD.
Some examples of songs on this CD:
"Old Dan Tucker": The audience is really into this song. There is singing along. It is cool to see Bruce Springsteen sing this. The backing group is excellent. The singer takes this song seriously, and creates a fine version in the process. Springsteen is in good voice.
"Erie Canal": This old song, which many of us sang back in elementary school, is presented in a straightforward fashion. His voice works well with this song. Remember the old lines?
"Low bridge, everybody down;
Low bridge, we're going to a town."
Very nicely done!
"When the Saints Go Marching In": A version taken in a slow and spare manner. . . . There is a nice piano introduction. Springsteen provides an intimate beginning to this song--just him and his guitar. With repeats, more instrumentation appears. Nicely done!
Other nice versions of songs as well--from his own "Blinded by the Light" to "We Shall Overcome."
Thus, a very intimate and interesting CD. And it is nice to see the concert as well as listen to it. . . .
best ever.......2007-07-07
Even if you don't care for Springsteen singing, this band is the
best I have seen live or otherwise. It is a very long show besides.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-07
I loved this DVD, you felt like you were in Dublin with the band. The songs and performance were great. If you are a fan of bruce, you must buy this Dvd and the Cd. Just wonderful, I play it all the time!! Love it!
If you missed the show ..........2007-07-03
This is a very good chance to see Bruce with the Sessions Band if you missed the tour. I did, so I am happy they decided to put this DVD together. Overall, this is a very good show, which I am rating 9 over 10 or 4 stars and a half. Besides the songs from the Segger album, I particularly liked some of Bruce's old songs in new versions such as 'Atlantic City', 'Open All Night', 'Further On (Up the Road)', and specially 'Highway Patrolman', which is in my Top 5 Bruce favorite songs and that is presented here in what some have said the definitive version of it. Bruce holds his guitar like Johnny Cash, and his voice is sometimes very tired. One of his back singers takes over sometimes, and I really liked that. The Sessions band is outstanding. All members are terrific musicians and prove to be a true good companion for Bruce. The only one I don't like is Patti, who strums her guitar (I am starting thinking her guitar might be unplugged) and moans instead of singing. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I am already fed up with her and her posing, always keeping an eye 'on the prize' (Bruce) like someone is going to steal him from her. This is music, HIS music, and it looks like she just has to be there, no matter what. After watching this video and being annoyed by her any time she took over, I went back and watch the videos on the Seeger album, and there is one video where the band is out in the garden playing, and there she is .... clapping hands! C'mon please, give me a break! She also appeared in the documentary for the Born to run BoxSet (Wings for Wheels), when she was not even a member of the E Street Band and she had nothing to do with it! I used to like her, but not anymore. She always does the same and it bothers me. Other than that, again, this is a good show and I recommend it to anyone who likes Bruce Springsteen.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.
Best music from Bruce in years.......2007-07-02
I first saw Bruce and his band at McDonough Arena in Georgetown in the mid-70's. I have a vivid memory of a wonderful night, ending with a raucus version of "Sea Cruise" that blew the doors off. This album brings back all of those great memories - and more. The musicianship is fantastic, the emotions of the whole band really come out. They love their work. It shows.
The band's performance in this instance is especially noteworthy for its masterful jazz harmonies, timbral balance, and rich polyphonic textures.

Celtic Woman, the PBS sensation, returns for 2007 in A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle, Ireland. Most of the elements return as well: vocalists Chloe, Meav, Lisa, and Orla; fiery fiddler Mairead; music director David Downes; chorus and orchestra; and the New Age-y Celtic and traditional music. New for this show is New Zealand vocalist Hayley Westenra, a picturesque outdoor location, and an almost entirely new song list. Chloe sings "The Prayer" (made famous by Josh Groban) and "Panis Angelicus"; Lisa covers "Caledonia," "The Blessing," and "The Voice"; Orla sings "Newgrange" and accompanies herself on harp for "Carrickfergus"; Meav sings "Dulaman"; Mairead plays "Granuaile's Dance" and "Shenandoah: The Pacific Slope"; and Hayley sings "Scarborough Fair" by herself and duets with Mairead (Handel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga") and Meav ("The Last Rose of Summer"). Then of course the group performs together ("The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun," "Over the Rainbow," "Beyond the Sea," "At the Ceili," "Sing Out!", "Spanish Lady," "Mo Ghile Mear"). Encore performances from the original show are Enya's "Orinoco Flow," "Danny Boy," "Somewhere," and "You Raise Me Up." Hayley proves to be an excellent fit among the beautiful voices, and Lisa seems to emerge as the talent most deserving of attention, but overall the show lacks some of the fresh sparkle of the original. The song list isn't quite as strong, and some of the "primp and pose" choreography is just silly. But Celtic Woman is never less than charming, and at its best can be quite stirring. --David Horiuchi

Awe Inspiring.......2007-07-05
These ladies are absolutely amazing. What angelic voices! Truly gifts from God himself! Let us not forget the violinist. She is one with her instrument and comes very close to stealing the show! Well, worth the money. Bravo!
Just marvelous.......2007-06-27
I did not know anything about Celtic Woman before I bought this product. I have a lot of concert DVD's, but this turned out to become one of my top favorites. I don't know how many times I have watced it, it is just marvelous. I have showed it to many of my friends, who also has been taken away by the beautiful music, fantastic setting and outstanding performers!!
Tron Syversen, Norway
I'm sorry but............2007-06-13
This DVD (not so much the CD) really is a bit over the edge....The Stepford Wives Do Celtic Music???...the guy pounding away wildly on the drums...the 3,000 extra singers...the constant awkward fashion show runway walk down the stage....the costume changes..the castle....waaaaaaaaaay over the top for my tastes...and the inappropriate CONSTANT switches to the audience reaction...this entire production was monsterous....I know that I will be the ONLY person who makes any of these points and that PBS stations from L.A. to the Suez Canal will broadacast this thing forever in membership drives... but this DVD is just not crafted to these wonderful singers....I just couldn't believe it.
I have every CD any of these women have done individually and I would highly recommend those CD's along with the original DVD and all the Celtic Woman CD's....but this DVD is so bad.
This is CELTIC music which relies more on simplicity and beauty...it was like sitting in a dentist chair WATCHING the tremendously talented Haley Westenra suddenly be thrown into this group as if she needed to do this to advance her own career....it was shocking if you have followed Haley's career over the last few years to see her as part of this overblown mess..I think this was a step backwards for her. She seemed out of place.
The gal jumping around with the fiddle like some sort of adult elf was just about the "my god, what next?" limit for me...until they focused on the wild bore Caliban guy trying to break his drums...banging away like he was smashing huge boulders.....
Looks like a bunch of Wall Street people got a hold of good thing (as they did with the Olympics and soon with NASCAR) and then said if a little is good..than an avalanche of it is better...no matter if it descends into bad taste...
The "good thing" here are gorgeous women who can sing very well.....that should have been enough on its own merits but instead what we get here on this DVD is every cliche known to man.
Cringe...and then cringe some more...
Sure it will sell but I hope the next time around all those handlers understand the words subtle and nuance. This DVD is like watching a war documentary. Again..the music on the CD is OK..but this DVD uber production is just so overblown that it leaves you dazed and beaten up...how they could have managed to do that with Celtic music is nearly criminal.
Celtic Woman - A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle, Ireland.......2007-06-09
I see this every time it comes on PBS. It's so excellent I bought it as a gift to share with family members out of state. It is exquisite !!!
Enjoyment that lasts.......2007-06-08
Saw the show on PBS and was enthralled. Actually got to see the ladies in concert, positively fantastic! Prabably will have to order new CD's and DVD as will most likely wear them out. Even my 8 year old enjoys them.

Martin Scorsese's 1978 capsule history of the Band is mixed with footage of the group's allegedly last performance (certainly their last performance as a quintet) in this particularly stylish concert film. Scorsese shoots the players and their sundry guests with the same flair and enthusiasm one can see in the later The Color of Money or Goodfellas. He also proves a good interviewer with Band members, particularly Robbie Robertson, whose sleepy-sexy good looks make a star-caliber impression in close-up. But the film's real hook is the stage show, which features a rotation of rock legends (Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Bob Dylan, and so on) playing with the Band before a wildly appreciative audience. --Tom Keogh
Description
It started as a concert. It became a celebration. Join an unparalleled lineup of rock superstars asthey celebrate The Band's historic 1976 farewell performance. Directed by Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull, Goodfellas), The Last Waltz is not only "the most beautiful rock film evermade" (New York Times) it's "one of the most important cultural events of the last two decades" (Rolling Stone)!

Best music you'll ever hear all in one place.......2007-07-08
This movie LOOKS fabulous also. The history and highlight of rock and roll. Filmed by an artist, Scorsese gives viewers a breath-taking experience. Emotionally loaded, you'll be tired after watching ALL this high-energy REAL Art! Music that transcends will amaze all ages. Should be in the video library of every home.
The Last Waltz.......2007-07-05
Hailed as the greatest concert movie ever, it just may be. Robbie Robertson, the film's producer and guiding light behind The Band, is charismatic off-stage, electric on-stage. All the guest musicians sing and play at the top of their games. Highlights include Joni Mitchell's "Coyote", Waters's earthy, soulful "Mannish Boy", Dr. John's dreamy "Such A Night", and Clapton's jaw-dropping guitar work on "Further On Up The Road". Scorsese hired top directors of photography to film this event from every conceivable angle, and the result is an intimate, exhilarating ride into the heart of rock music.
good music.......2007-06-14
this dvd is excellent. there is nothing else to be said.
Just adding to.......2007-06-08
There's enough reviews of this Classic. I'm 50+ and showed my copy of this DVD to my teenage kids last Thanksgiving. They were enthralled! My daughter asked for it as a gift for her graduation from UT (uhhh, I guess that means she's not a teenager anymore! but my son is and a Music major at UT). That about says it all I think.
The Standard for Concert Films - A Trip down Memory Lane!.......2007-05-16
Viewing "The Last Waltz," was like a trip down rock history memory lane. This is the DVD you show your children to introduce them to rock music of the seventies. The direction of Martin Scorsese provides the viewer with insightful interviews coupled with lush musical productions. I am still trying to decide on my favorite performance - there are just too many! Also, buy the CD - you will not be disappointed.

Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.
The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy
Description
John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!
Customer Reviews:
Energetic high school musical set in the 1950s.......2007-07-06
Remember those school productions of "Grease" - well this is the film that everyone remembers, based on the long-running Broadway show.
The songs are deliberately cheesy, the acting over the top, the teenagers look about 30, but it's all pretty good fun.
Comparing this to "High School Musical", which has real teenagers one realises that "Grease" is not about teenagers at all but a 1950s that probably never existed. Indeed "Grease" was part of the 1950s nostalgia phenomenon of the 1970s along with "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" that continued with films such as "Back to the Future" and "Stand By Me" in the 1980s. America was harking back to a kinder, simpler, innocent era post-Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Watergate.
"Grease" still holds up as decent entertainment today.

This moie came out when I was out of HighSchool....I LOVED it then and it's been one of my favorites...The music is terrific and John Travolta and Olivia Newton John did an incredible job as the two main characters in the movie.......

My DVD arrived very quickly, as usual. A welcomed addition to our collection of classics.
A classic, must have for every collection.......2007-05-23
This movie is just a classic and always a good time to watch. It's pretty harmless and just puts you in a good mood. I saw this movie about 25 times when I was growing up and it came out, so I was pleased to see it on a DVD so I can watch it and not wear out the tape!

When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who's sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there's reason to believe the banker's crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, it's a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker--a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. --Jeff Shannon

Shawshank brilliance.......2007-07-04
If you've not seen this movie, you're long overdue. It's a wonderful movie with moving performances by terrific actors. There are lots of good extras on this Special Edition.
The Shawshank Redemption.......2007-06-08
Order was received sooner than expected ... in excellent condition. Was very pleased.
Great Movie.......2007-05-28
I bought this movie because I read the book Differnt Seasons (by Stephen King) that has this story in it. The book was great and so was the movie. The plot is the same but the story is a little differnt in the movie. This is one of the few movies as good as the book. My only complaint is that the movie would mot play on Windows Media Player on my computer, instead I had to install InterActual Player. I personaly did not see the point of that.
Hope.......2007-05-23
As Tim Robbins' character writes in this movie "Hope is a good thing...", and this movie gives us hope that intelligent movies might still be made in Hollywood.
Great move.......2007-05-16
Hd to get it in DVD I had vcr put there out dated. This is one move we can watch over and over thank you

At long last Pink Floyd: Pulse has arrived on DVD, and Floyd fans already know it's a major cause to celebrate. The original VHS release was a milestone bestseller, but it seemed to take forever for the DVD to arrive, with numerous delays while Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and long-time Floyd producer James Guthrie labored to restore, re-edit, and remix this legendary concert video in 5.1-channel Dolby Surround Sound. The resulting two-disc set was well worth the wait: While the limitations of the original video source are still evident in the sometimes-hazy image quality (Gilmour would later admit the concert should have been captured on film), Floyd fans will unanimously agree that Pulse has never looked or sounded better, and only the absence of group co-founder Roger Waters prevents this from being the ultimate document of Pink Floyd in performance. (Even without Waters, it's easily one of the group's most impressive stage productions.) Gracefully directed with minimal intrusion by veteran music video and concert director David Mallet, and shot on video during Pink Floyd's two-week stint at London's Earls Court Exhibition Centre in October 1994, this 145-minute performance (from Floyd's Division Bell tour) is a sonic marvel to behold. Under a massive arch festooned with then-state-of-the-art laser, lighting, and projection systems, the 1987 incarnation of Pink Floyd (Gilmour, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason) and their stellar supporting band kicks off with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (a loving tribute to Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett), followed by four tracks from The Division Bell, two from 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" from 1979's magnum opus The Wall, and leading into intermission with an absolutely stunning performance of "One of These Days," the timeless opening track from 1971's Meddle.
The centerpiece of Disc 2 is a near-perfect performance of 1974's Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety--reason enough to make this a must-have DVD for even the most casual Floyd admirers. And while no one will ever re-create the sheer magnificence of Clare Torry's original tour de force vocals on "The Great Gig in the Sky," it's safe to say that backup singers Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, and Durga McBroom deliver the next best thing, in addition to seamless contributions throughout the concert. After the closing heartbeat of "Eclipse," the concert ends with encore performances of "Wish You Were Here," "Comfortably Numb," and a no-holds-barred, pyrotechnically explosive rendition of The Wall's "Run Like Hell," all showcasing Gilmour's guitar mastery with frequent close-ups of his picking and fret-work as seen throughout the concert. (Like Gilmour, Mason and Wright were never dynamic onstage, and that's true here as well, but their technical precision is fully evident, and while guitarist Tim Renwick and saxophonist Dick Parry are each given moments to shine, bassist Guy Pratt is a worthy substitution for Waters, especially when vocally sparring with Gilmour on "Run Like Hell.")
With beautiful packaging, an 8-page booklet, and menu designs by long-time Floyd associate Storm Thorgerson, the DVDs offer an abundance of bonus features including "Bootlegging the Bootleggers," featuring surprisingly good-quality "boot" video performances of "What Do You Want From Me?," "On the Turning Away," "Poles Apart," and "Marooned." The surreal round-ratio screen films seen throughout the concert can all be viewed independently (still in round format, and several offered in both original and alternate versions). Music videos for "Learning to Fly" and "Take It Back" are included on Disc 1, along with "Tour Stuff" including maps, itineraries, and stage plans for the 1994 tour. "Say Goodbye to Life as We Know It" is a playful backstage video (mostly involving the production staff's ongoing quest for a good pint of beer), and after delivering a heartfelt introduction to Pink Floyd's 1996 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with Roger Waters and Syd Barrett acknowledged by Gilmour), Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan joins Gilmour and Wright for a moving acoustic performance of "Wish You Were Here" (directed at Waters, perhaps?). Additional features include album cover art, a photo gallery, and the concert-only audio choice between a 448kbps audio bitstream or a higher-quality 640kbps stream for higher-quality DVD players. The system set-up feature ensures that audiophiles will achieve optimum speaker performance in keeping with Pink Floyd's exacting technical standards. In tandem with the superior concert presentation, these features make Pulse one of the best--if not the best--music DVDs of 2006, guaranteed to satisfy Floyd fans for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

Pink Floyd - Pulse.......2007-07-05
I can only say, Wow this is totally awesome. The sound quality and concert footage gives you the best seat in the house.
had it for years on lazer disc now finally on DVD.......2007-06-22
Saw this show twice in Atlanta. This is a must have. The only thing about this show that isn't as good as the 87 tour is the girl singers. They still are good though. This was the stage and light show that will probally keep David Gilmore from ever touring Pink Floyd again. I don't think they could out do it. Great sound and lots of extras the lazer disc didn't have. You won't miss Roger too bad trust me. This show was history. If you missed it this will get you there. Turn it up and enjoy
pink floyd in all their glory.......2007-06-15
This DVD is definitely a winner...The unique sound of "the Floyd" comes across splendidly here...Video and audio are extra sharp, and the colors and the laser effects are outstanding...get it for yourself.
excellent.......2007-06-13
Disc 1 has great visuals and excellent sound, Disc 2, same but the last 3 songs are great. Well worth the $$$$
Wow! Almost like being there, but............2007-06-12
I bought PULSE on VHS when it first came out a few years ago. I was so excited when I heard it was coming to DVD.....and a little disappointed after my first viewing.
DON'T GET ME WRONG! This is an EXCELLENT performance from one of the most artistic, prolific and enduring rock bands of our time!
The only problem is, the video is not of DVD quality. The original footage was shot on video tape and a DVD tranfer is only as good as the master it was taken from. You can only do so much with a sub-par master tape (remember, this concert was recorded before the age of DVD and video tape was more or less the industry standard at the time).
The redeeming factor of this release is that it's the only way you can get the entire Dark Side of the Moon album performed LIVE! Gilmour, Mason and Wright have proved that they still have what it takes when it comes to musicianship. The only thing that would have made this DVD even better was if Roger Waters could have put aside his differences and been a part of this concert.
The bonus features of this DVD are simply amazing. This is a must-have for any Pink Floyd fan or a music fan in general.
David Gilmour (my personal guitar hero) is amazing to watch. It makes me mad when I have to work hard at playing guitar and he makes it seem so effortless!
Mason and Wright are also given chances to shine (especially the keyboard solo in "Any Colour You Like"!!!!).
When you buy this DVD and get ready to watch it, turn down the lights, turn off the phone, relax, and get ready to be blown away!

This is a great DVD but not the best of them..........2007-07-08
Because 2005 Romant Energy Live, 2004 Miracle Live Japan Tour, 2003 Budokon Live, Miralce Live 2002 are all better than this... Most of the songs on Shanghai DVD are repetition from previous except for some like" Frigile", " Carmen",... the sound is great ... But I'm quite dissappointed about Manhttan records - the dvd package has no insert artwork and dvd itself no bouns scenes like most dvd has...
Magical.......2007-07-04
This is a wonderful, exuberant performance, full of joy and artistry. 12 Girls Band make their instruments dance, sing and rejoice in their music. Their celebration of traditional Chinese instruments through the fusion of the traditional and the contemporary breathes pure magic into the entire concert. One cannot help but be swept up in the majesty and beauty of the music created by these extraordinarily talented ladies. This is music to touch the soul.
Your second must buy DVD.......2007-07-03
This is The Girls' ninth DVD. Unlike others, this one is filmed live in Shanghai in an open stage with a few songs by guess singers.
There is a mix of old songs and new songs. The new ones are mostly played excellently. The Bach's Concerto for Violin in A Minor outperforms the usual violin version. This will become another hit after New Classicism. The La Habanera (from Carmen) sung by Lila Downs is my favorite. Fragile deserves special mention here. The instruments do not seem to tie in well with My Heart Will Go On, perhaps due to the fact that the tone of erhu is too "sorrow" for the song, which requires a touch of romance and softness. Carnival is an old song but played in this DVD much better than other previous DVDs.
Overall, I would rate this DVD my second best after Miracle Live DVD (performed in Beijing, now out of stock) and is a must buy for new (as well as for returning) customers. Two other must buy DVDs include the Romantic Energy 2005 DVD and A Tribute to Wang Luo Bin DVD (for those who are familiar with Chinese folk songs). The Eastern Energy CD is also a must buy.
Great in Shanghai and the USA.......2007-06-29
I have watched this production on PBS twice and again on the dvd. I consider this one of the finest cross-cultural offerings I have ever seen. My only disappointment was that there aren't notes about the various oriental instruments being played. An astounding production - beautiful music with beautiful girls in a beautiful setting.
12 or 13, that is the question.......2007-06-10
Brian Kohler wrote: "how can there be 13 girls in the 12 girls band? Thats craaazzzy!!!!"
Not so craaazzzy. There are 13 doughnuts in a baker's dozen and the Three Musketeers had four members, Porthos, Athos, Aramis, and d'Artagnon. Gotta learn to think outside the box.
But, more to the point, the Twelve Girls Band is outstanding, especially, I think, for their masterful renditions of Bach and Beethoven. I had my doubts that European classical and baroque music could be played appropriately on Eastern instruments, but they quickly disabused me of that idea. I felt the same way about Bela Fleck playing Bach on the banjo, but he proved that good music could be played by talented musicians on any instrument and made to sound as though it had been written for that instrument. Terrific DVD...highly recommended!

Description
Sammy Hagar And The Wabos - Livin' It Up Live! - Caught live in St Louis on their sold out 2006 US tour, Sammy And The Wabos bring down the house with songs from their new album, Livin' It Up, as well as some of Sammy's famed solo work. Joined on stage for the second half of the show by legendary Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony, the band rips through some of rock radio's classic tunes. From "I Can't Drive 55" and "Mas Tequila" to "Finish What You Started" and "Right Now", it's one big Cabo party with the "Red Rocker"! December 6, 1978-it might have started before then but I'll never forget Sammy opening for Ted Nugent at the Checkerdome in St. Louis. Opening acts aren't supposed to have the audience in the palm of their hand but Sammy sure did. His honesty and sincerity captivated the audience. The relationship between this artist and this city would never be the same. Almost 30 years later Sammy is still honest, still sincere and now more than ever, holds the St. Louis audience in the palm of his hand with a shot of Cabo in the other. Sammy fans everywhere just want to know, "What is it with Sammy and St. Louis?" It could be the relationship between Sammy and KSHE radio which dates back to the early 70's and the Montrose days. It could be all of the great solo albums. It could be the days with Van Halen. I think it's a combination of all of the above magnified by the sweat and energy of 33 plus shows that over 500,000 diehard fans have witnessed in this city. Whatever this "thing" is between Sammy and St. Louis it's real, it's heartfelt and spiritual to a degree. Once you watch the DVD you might understand. Favazz--KSHE/St. Louis Songs: Miss Tequila, Mexico, There's Only One Way to Rock, Rainy Day Women (#12/#35), The Girl Gets Around, Rock Candy, I'll Fall in, Love Again, I'll Take You There, Sam I Am, Little White Lie, I Can't Drive 55, Heavy Metal, Good Enough, Summer Nights, Right Now, Finish What You Started, Best of Both Worlds, Fight for Your Right, Cabo Wabo

Fantastic DVD!.......2007-07-09
I watched this DVD this past weekend, and well, all I can say is that I felt like I was actually at a Sammy Hagar concert! This release really has a great live feel to it. Fortunately, the editing was done well, with not too many camera angles or split second angle changes that have plagued many DVD releases in recent years (like Iron Maiden's last 2 live DVDs). The camera is actually allowed to linger on one shot for more than a fraction of a second. In addition to a well produced video, the setlist is also great as well as the audio. This DVD really is like being at a big Sammy Hagar party!
The only thing that I would change on this release is how loud Mona's background vocals are on certain songs. Her background vocals are too loud in the mix and are at times as loud or louder than Sammy's. Michael Anthony's vocals, however, are perfect during the second half of the set. I like Mona on bass in this band, but it sure would be nice to see Michael as the full time bassist for Sammy now that he's been booted from Van Halen. I believe that Sammy and Michael are just meant to be togther and I hope to see this happen sometime in the near future.
Sammy is the man !.......2007-06-28
This is a fun DVD. It shows Sammy in one of his favorite cities, St. Louis, doing what he does best .. playing live and having fun.
Who cares that Sammy is a 60 year old seasoned veteran ... he still rocks like he's 20 and gives meaning to the phrase "old is only how you feel".
What I like about this DVD is the fact that he plays his staples, then throws in some almost forgotten classics (The Girl Gets Around, I'll Fall In Love Again) and even when Micheal Anthony joins him on stage, you get some staples of a Van Halen set and lost gems like Summer Nights and Good Enough.
If you love good time rock and roll from one of the greats ... get this DVD.
Awesome up to date video.......2007-06-22
Absolutely great Hagar footage.
Why someone who is NOT a Hagar Fan, would view this DVD is absolutely beyond me.
So for the one star dork who asked the question why can't old gezers like Sammy get out of the way........Well, why watch the concert in the first place?
A Hagar fan who DOESN'T like this, well, I can respect, if not agree with that. But if you don't like Sammy in the first place, why waste your time?
Sam man touches on many great hits that HAGAR fans want to see. He rips loose on the guitar quite a bit so that adds to the project.
St. Louis must be an absolute AWESOME city to see Hagar play in as the audience is comepletely into the show. I've seen Sammy before, but never in St. Looo. Given I'm a die hard Rams fan, I need some stars to align for me and make a trip to kill two birds with one stone.
If you ARE a Hagar fan, you WILL love this DVD. If you are NOT a Hagar fan, you probably won't. But then agian, why would you bother?
Hat's off to the Red Rocker!

Why St. Louis Loves Sammy.......2007-06-21
As I write this, I am listening to Sammy's DVD release concert LIVE on KSHE. It sold out in minutes. What is it with St. Louis and Sammy Hagar. At one of his shows, we know all the words and sing along during the show. It does not matter if it is Montrose, Sammy Solo, or Van Halen (Van Hagar in St. Louis), we love it. I tried to find the DVD at lunch and it was already sold out. You really have to hear Sammy live to appreciate his music. Buy this DVD and then go see a show, after drinking lots of tequila of course.

Amazon.com essential video
The Monterey International Pop Festival, the three-day event staged in 1967 that has become one of rock music's most famous and in some ways greatest concerts, gets the royal treatment with this three-disc boxed set.
Material on two of the three discs has already been widely available. Monterey Pop, D.A. Pennebaker's 79-minute, 1968 film, effectively sets the scene for the festival, which took place during the fabled "Summer of Love," when the hippie ethos was in its fullest flower, especially on the West Coast. And while not all the featured performances are thrilling, those that are--principally by the Who, Jimi Hendrix, and the amazing Ravi Shankar--are worth the price of admission, especially in the high-definition digital transfer and new 5.1 mix seen and heard here. The same can be said for Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey, which appear in the boxed set on a separate disc and provide a much fuller look at Hendrix's and Otis Redding's incendiary sets (literally, in the former case).
Those two discs are also loaded with bonus features, including audio commentary by Pennebaker, festival producer Lou Adler (on Monterey Pop), and author Peter Guralnick (Shake!); audio-only remarks by some of the performers; photos; trailers; and other material. There's also a substantial booklet, filled with essays and photos. But it's the third disc, "The Outtake Performances," comprising some two hours of music that didn't make the final film edit, that will be of most interest to many viewers. The disc supplies a taste of some of the artists who didn't appear in Monterey Pop at all (the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksilver Messenger Service), and a more complete look at some who did (the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas). A nice addition to an already very impressive DVD collection. --Sam Graham

The Complete Monterey Pop Festival.......2007-06-28
It was 1967, the Summer of Love and "Sergeant Pepper's," a charged moment when rock'n'roll was evolving in daring new directions, fueled by psychedelic drugs, the sexual revolution, and a new generation finding its voice. Documentarian D.A. Pennebaker covers the Monterey Pop Festival like a blanket in this feature-length concert film--the first ever--filming everything and everyone, while showcasing landmark performances by immortals Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who, among others.
Revelatory performances........2007-01-07
The film restoration work looks and sounds magnificent. Eddie Kramer gets extra congratulations on the 5.1 audio mix. That said, the 3rd disc is mainly in stereo only.
Karen's review below is a bit harsh. If you actually listen to the main film's commentary, you will understand why more footage isn't available: Not every second of 3 days of performances were captured. Concert films did not exist as a genre at this time (see the annoyingly choppy 'Festival!' documenting Newport), so this was new territory and the point of the film was to make a document that gave an overall feel for the event and time. Pennebaker and his crew had to decide which songs to film, which seems to have been predetermined by Dylan's buddy Bob Neuwirth who was more familiar with the scene than the filmmaker. They would turn on a red light on stage to signal to start filming the next song. At some times, they didn't have a plan and the camera men would shoot at their discretion, so some performances may have been captured by only 1 camera and therefore considered not presentable. Also, film reels would end during performances and need to be changed (approx every 20 minutes), hence footage missing from two of Jimi's songs.
Regarding the lack of more outtake footage:
1. Your precious Janis and Big Brother's new manager Albert Grossman didn't allow them to be filmed the first day, but finally they were asked to play again the next day because of the crowd reaction and the desire to get something on film. The whole set could exist but I doubt it. Grossman and his need for control is probably to blame, and it's no coincidence that Woodstock's filmmakers were also refused to use her footage in the original release. She only appears now in the directors cut.
2. The Byrds set is extremely historic, and that is one that should have been included in whole if it exists.
3. The Who's set is only missing 'Pictures of Lily' not counting 'My Generation' which is in the proper film. It is on bootleg Who dvd's so why that wasn't included is inexplicable. I would have like to have seen all footage from each artist's set put together on the bonus disc including the songs included in whole or in part in the actual final film, so that it's all in one place. What we get is anything besides what made the final cut.
4. As far as Tiny Tim, yes his impromptu performances are annoying, but they are part of just that, impromptu candid backstage footage supplied as bonus, not part of the 2 hours of bonus footage. So, skip past it like I did and get over it.
5. Regarding the Grateful Dead, a small glimpse is seen at the beginning of the 'Jimi Plays Monterey' film, but the liner notes from the 4CD box set from 1992 tells us, that like Janis, the band and or management refused to allow any audio or visuals to be used. I assume they didn't like their performance, or wanted to control it like the rest of their own vault. The whole festival was for charity, as we also learn from the supplementary interviews, and the artists therefore had to sign waivers releasing the rights to their performances. My guess it the Dead refused to comply.
6.The real shame is that there is no footage of Lou Rawls' electrifying set, which would also show more of the diversity of genre's that were at the festival.
7. Charles Shaar Murray's commentary during the Hendrix film is actually quite insightful and entertaining. Yes, there are some funny comments about substances and clothing. He wrote a definitive biography of Jimi, and his commentary is well founded and gives context to why his perfomance at the festival was revolutionary.
That said, this is a definitive package, and a must own release for a serious rock collector's library.
Not complete.......2006-12-10
I know i give this five stars and it is worth the high price, but complete. Not even close. Since i first heard about montery pop on some vh1 thing years ago ive been interested in monterey pop. The fact that it was the first real festival, besides newport, and in my opinion the best.
I originally bought the vhs tape, and then the hard to find 4 disc box set, and then this 3 disc dvd. I even have a bootleg of the grateful deads performance there. It would just be a lot cooler if it was actually complete. Its just kinda of a tease to see one buffalo sprinfield song when you know they most likely have their whole performance on tape.
Jimi Hendrix plays Wild Thing at Monterey Pop.......2006-10-15
Unforgeteable performance, that I first watched in a movie theater in 1975. The sound in big space is much different, you hear the crakles of fire in the guitar, and the acoustic couplings between guitar and Marshalls are richer in tremeloes and vibrations. May be the remastering for DVD filtered too much, but unless you own a superb stereo equipment, you better watch it as a movie!
Everything I wanted.......2006-08-15
I have been looking for the Hendrix concert footage for awhile. This is worth the full price alone.
