Even before he steps out onto the stage, the audience is on its feet clapping and screaming for Barry Manilow. Walking out and launching into "Could It Be Magic?" Manilow proves his pipes are as strong and clear as ever and his suits still dapper. He promises "beautiful melodies, passionate lyrics, great grooves, and maybe even some swiveling hips" to the delight of the sold-out house. The video was filmed in Nashville in February 2000 and includes half an hour of footage not included in the direct TV broadcast.
A consummate showman, Manilow performs 24 of his biggest hits accompanied by full orchestra. "Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again" speaks to everyone whose heart has been broken but holds out for love. During "Can't Smile Without You," the audience holds up signs bearing smiley faces, hearts, and "ME" in hopes that Manilow will pick them for his traditional duet. "Bandstand Boogie," the long-time theme song for American Bandstand, rocks the house. Then Manilow brings it down for perennial favorite, "Mandy," which segues into "Even Now."
Manilow's timing is impeccable, and he knows exactly how to work the adoring crowd. The accordion interlude is particularly amusing, as is "Flight of the Bumblebee" played on a kazoo. Mixing pop, jazz, disco, and big band, Manilow moves smoothly through the two-hour set, alternately sitting at the piano or standing at the mike. The bluesy "That's Life" gets an infusion of energy from audience participation, and "Copacabana" is just as infectious as ever (with Manilow doing a little of that hip-swiveling). Ending with a heartfelt encore of "Stars in the Night," Manilow Live! is a must-have for fans of the man. --Dana Van Nest

SupercalifragilisticexpiBARRYdoceous!.......2006-11-27
One of my 3 favorite Barry DVDs, this is a great one to have. It includes an absolutely GREAT compilation of songs. It also includes Barry playing the accordion and playing Flight of the Bumblebee on a kazoo! This is just too cool. Add that to his wit and charm, as he chit chats with the audience in between, and musical talent and this video is just superb.
There is also a tribute to Frank Sinatra. The DVD includes the upbeat version of "Could It Be Magic." As beautiful as the slow melodic version of that song is, the upbeat version is too cool. I don't know which version I love best.
The DVD is done in such a way that you feel like you have a front row seat. The Nashville crowd loves Barry and he gives another 120%.
Barry looks great in this one and puts on a super fantastic show, AGAIN!!! You won't be disappointed if you grab this one up.
Manilow Live - DTS.......2006-03-01
Great DVD, enjoyed how much Barry Manilow loved working with the Orchestra and how much the orchestra added to the performance. Very entertaining and rich!
Well worthwhile.......2005-09-13
I purchased this based on the recommendations, and I am happy I did. Barry Manilow really is the consummate professional -- he's charming, funny, and exceptionally talented. He's been doing this a long time, and it shows. I was so happy to see him sing "All the Time," one of my favorites. He does two songs from his play "Harmony," "Every Single Day" and "Stars in the Night," and you can see that they hold a special place in his heart. Like someone else reviewed, I never thought of Barry Manilow as sexy until this video -- he has a certain confidence and grace, and yes, he is definitely sexy. "Eat your heart out, Ricky Martin," indeed.
Great Album, but...........2004-11-24
I really liked this album, since I ordered another DVD by mistake or carelessness on my part. Didn't care for it. This one is a very good DVD. But what I don't get is on the other one, my favorite Manilow tune "Could it Be Magic" is not played, and on this one it's just in the opening of the show. It's shallow and it's Disco! What? The Chopin intro is left off, some of the words were changed, because he wasn't singing to sweet Melissa, he was singing to the audience instead. Bad idea. Has Manilow got a problem with that song? It's one of his greatest hits, and one of his most powerful...made a fan of me. I was so disappointed. Other than that, the DVD it's quite good, and Manilow sounds terrific. Also there's a full orchestra, which is great. His Sinatra medly is OK, but please....not neccessary. He's not Sinatra, and it's sounds off somehow. Perhaps it was his choice of tunes that are so associated with Sinatra. Most of Manilow choice of songs, however, were very powerful, and his kibbitizing with the audience was charming. I'm glad I bought it.
Very enjoyable.......2004-04-16
A strong performance with all the great songs. Manilow has the audience in the palm of his hand. Orchestration is excellent, video on DVD looks great. Vocal and emotional performances by Barry deserve a Warning to all true fans.
Call Ground Control and have them Stand By to bring you down.
