3 out of 5 stars + 1 from Van Hagar fans, -1 from Classic VH fans.......2007-04-28

I think if you like Hagar after Dave, this is pretty comprehensive as far as videos go. Hagar could easily put his own video collection out including his pre-MTV era solo and Montrose stuff.

It puzzles me as to why they chose to go with just the "1984" era material. There were promos shot for the first album. "Dance The Night Away" was a live promo. "Loss Of Control", while not on the CD version, would've been funny to watch (You Tubers can find it). "And the Cradle Will Rock" did have them lip syncing on a TV show. 3 promos from "Fair Warning" were MTV staples, and let us not forget "(Oh) Pretty Woman" that was taken off of MTV due to controversy.

It's not a bad collection, but other than "Without You" with Gary Cherone (VH III) , not much focus on making this a jam packed collection of hits and rarities that it could've been. "Best of Bowie" it is not.

4 out of 5 stars Still Crazy after all these years..........2007-03-09

Van Halen and David Lee Roth... the videos aren't quite as slick as you remember them, but Jump is certainly a classic and was my main reason for ordering this video... the flambouyant DLR at his best... I discovered a few other Van Halen hits that I hadn't even realized were VH.

This video compilation is well done... plays well on my home system. Gets you jumpin'.

3 out of 5 stars Nice try, but does lack overall balance, just no Dave footage, mostly sammy. And yes, where are the blue angels?.......2007-02-07

This set was releaded as a companion to the greatest hits volume 1, and seems rushed together. No biographys or breaks, just video after video. Only three dave videos. They could have put in some live recordings. And Dreams as a live video, they must not have gotten permission to use the Blue Angels video version on this. It seemed rushed together, using the available videos, which sammy will obviously dominate that catalog since David lee roth left Just as MTV was taking off, videos weren't that big when he was in the band. Oh well, I'll take what I can get, but not worth shelling out any major cash for. At least its cheaper here on amazon. THis DVD does contain the Bonus of the "without you" video, but some fans may actually think its a punishment for buying the DVD. I guess it could be worse, but it could have been done better.

1 out of 5 stars Disapointed.......2007-01-08

I was disapointed... I was looking for the "Dreams Video" that featured the blue angles. When I did a google search... they said that this video series had this video.

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-11-10

This is a great DVD with some real Van Halen classics. I have one complaint though.....the main reason that I bought the DVD was for the 'Dreams' video with the Blue Angels. The 'Dreams' video on this DVD is from a live performance and NOT the one with the Blue Angels. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Music of Hope...................2007-04-11

This is great music to speak to your heart, soul and mind. I love to play it with the children around. Alot better for their minds than what is popular with the mainstream today.

4 out of 5 stars gaither singers.......2007-02-06

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful collection of gospel gems.......2004-04-05

Culled from Bill and Gloria Gaither's many live Homecoming reunions, from venues as diverse as the famous old Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to the beautiful Central Hall Westminster, in London, England, some of gospel music's greatest singers are showcased with brief introductions by Bill. These are all inspiring songs that fill the heart with praise, hope and gratitude, and they're performed with devotion and musical excellence.

Song list:
1. "Farther Along" ~ Ivan Parker, 1995.
2. "Sweet Beulah Land" ~ Squire Parsons, 1995
3. "To God be the Glory" ~ Andrae Crouch, (this is mislabeled on my copy) 2001
4. "Joy Comes in the Morning" ~ Joy Gardner, 1996
5. "Rock of Ages" ~ Vestal Goodman, Reggie Smith, Joy Gardner, Stephen Hill, 1998
6. "In the Garden" ~ The Mullins Family, 1995
7. "I Believe in a Hill Called Mount Calvary"~ Gaither Vocal Band, 1998
8. "Whispering Hope" ~ Larry Ford, 2000
9. "If I Can Help Someone" ~ Glen Payne (in one of his last performances), 2000
10. "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" ~ Larry Ford, 2000
11. "Lord, Send Your Angels" ~ Candy Christmas, Kim Hopper, Charlotte Ritchie, 2000
12. "I'm Free" ~ Lynda Randle, David Phelps, 2000
13. "The King is Coming" ~ Gaither Vocal Band, George Younce, 2001
14. "Through it All" ~ Jessy Dixon, Ben Speer, 1996
15. "The Blood Will Never Lose its Power" ~ CeCe Winans, 2001
16. "Highway to Heaven" ~ Jessy Dixon, Glen Payne, (one of the 2 up-tempo songs in the collection, it's a real hand-clapper) 1998
17. "The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference" ~ Gaither Vocal Band (Guy Penrod), 2001
18. "Standing in the Need of Prayer" ~ Evie Karlsson, Sarah DeLane, 2001
19. "Oh, What a Time !" ~ Gaither Vocal Band, Jake Hess (the 2nd up-tempo song) 2001
20. "Climbing Jacob's Ladder" ~ Ann Downing, The Ruppes, The Nelons, Greater Vision, 2001

This is good to put on and watch when your spirit needs a lift, and serves equally well as background music, as the songs are mostly in a mellow mood, and will bring peace and harmony to your living space.
Total running time is one hour and ten minutes.

Outstanding performances by an array of talent ranging from the Rolling Stones and the Animals to Lou Rawls and the Association are among the highlights of this, the first of nine volumes contained in the massive Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics boxed set. Some of the 18 songs are in black and white, some in color; some are completely live, some (including two by the Mamas and the Papas) are totally lip-synced, and some are a combination of the two. In the end, what's good (like the Association's "Along Comes Mary" or the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday") is marvelous; what's not so good, is... well, calling Herman's Hermits' "I'm Henry the VIII, I Am" a "classic" is a bit of a stretch. On the other hand, for some viewers, hearing Sullivan introduce Sonny and Cher as "my little paisans" and the Supremes as "the girls" (he forgot the group's name) may alone be worth the price of admission. --Sam Graham

Description

On Sunday nights throughout the '50s and '60s, Ed Sullivan brought pop culture into America's living rooms with th e most influential show of its kind. If you made it there, you had it made because for the first time, the entire county was at home watching. During the course of the show's run, many of the early rock and roll legends were featured in career-defining p erformances. These cultural milestones have been compiled for Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics, along with archival footage and narration for insight on the artists, their eras, and their classic appearances. Now seen with half a century of hindsight , it's clear Ed Sullivan was right--his was a "really big show."

Top Hits of 1965: Four Tops ("Same Old Song," "Sugar Pie," & "Something About You"), Sonny & Cher ("I Got You Babe"), Herman's Hermits ("I'm Henry The VII, I Am"), The 4 Seasons ("Let's Hang On!"), The Lovin' Spoonful ("Do You Believe In Magic"), Tom Jon es ("It's Not Unusual"), Deno, Desi & Billy ("I'm A Fool").

Top Hits of 1966: The Association ("Along Came Mary"), The Supremes ("My World Is Empty Without You"), Lou Rawls ("Love Is A Hu rtin' Thing"), The Animals ("Don't Bring Me Down"), The Mamas & The Papas ("Monday, Monday"), The Rolling Stones ("Paint It, Bl ack").

Top Hits of 1967: Johnny Rivers ("Baby I Need Your Lovin'"), The Supremes ("The Happening"), The Association ("Never My Love"), The Mamas & The Papas ("Creeque Alley"), The Rolling Stones ("Ruby Tuesday").

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy Beatles on Ed Sullivan instead.......2005-10-27

How disappointing compared to The Beatles Ed Sullivan where 4 entire episodes are uncut. And to take you back to Feb 1964 each show includes the commercials!!! Fascinating to see what things were like back then. You get to see the other artists and comedians who make the Beatles look like they dropped in from Mars. The way these are presented uncut and with commercials you see how straight the USA was in February of 1964 and how just 18 months later during the Beatles last performance you get a glimpse of how our culture and society had changed in such a short period of time.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome DVD!.......2005-06-18

I have been looking for this DVD for a long time. When I received it today, I was very excited and very pleased! I am a huge Johnny Rivers Fan. I was afraid that his performance on the DVD might be cut short like the performances on the Best Of The Ed Sullivan Show DVD. But Johnny's entire performance was on the DVD along with extra footage of him greeting Ed after the performance. I was extreamly pleased!

1 out of 5 stars Video equivalent of swiss cheese.......2005-03-31

The custodian at CBS swept the cutting room floor and handed the assemblage off to a dim-witted chimp for editing.
Frustratingly small snippets of songs.
Try this only if you suffer from attention deficit disorder, otherwise you'll be suffering from videoitis interruptus.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best DVD from Ed Sullivan and etc........2005-01-06

The Four Tops, the Supremes, Johnny Rivers, and the Four Seasons were highlights of a mediocre DVD. The Tops did a surprisingly short medley of three of their hits. They looked great up there and there were some humorous parts (I thought). The Supremes looked wonderful as well and Diana primped and sang her heart out, but "My World is Empty Without You" was a little too happy for the song's mood and I've yet to figure out what the happening of "The Happening" is. Johnny Rivers was incredibly stiff and seemed nervous. The song ended rather abruptly. I was impressed by the Four Seasons as well; being able to visualize that nasally sound from Frankie Valli was wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this mess.......2003-06-24

I paid over ...bucks for the the 9 disc boxed set and didn't buy it from a store but ordered on line, so I couldn't get the refund I SO deserved. Rhino..you should be ashamed of yourself for duking lovers of this classic period in Americana. Some oif the performances are cut, Diana Ross and The Supremes' version of Love is Like An Itching in My Heart was part of a 3 song medley when it originally aired (complete w/classic Supremes choreography) and you butchered the other 2 songs. And that's just the start...Folks don't buy this or any other Sullivan "shew" compilation unless all it's the full content of the show. And where is Shirley Bassey?

If you're not aware that the human elbow is one of the most effective weapons at your disposal, you haven't been paying attention to Ultimate Fighting, a sport in which men meet in an octagonal ring and wrestle, punch, and frequently elbow each other into submission. This highlight tape, comprising footage during Ultimate Fighting tournament events held in various locations in the mid-1990s, might look very strange indeed for those who are new to the sport. A typical match involves two men who begin punching with bare knuckles, but as soon as one of them stumbles, his opponent kicks him in the face, knocking out a tooth and drawing blood. In fact, a lot of the matches on this tape wind up as bloodbaths, and unlike in professional wrestling shows, the cut foreheads, broken noses, and split lips are all real. Some matches are surprisingly brief, such as one where a contestant pins his opponent, who counters by delivering a speedy series of elbow jabs to the other man's head, immediately knocking him unconscious. Assembled as a program of "best matches," this production could perhaps benefit from a structure that explains the origin of Ultimate Fighting and its rules. But the announcers, who include NFL legend Jim Brown, do a credible job of calling the action as it happens, and fans of this novel sport will no doubt be delighted with the relentless mayhem. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars Where Mastery meets History.......2007-01-19

This disc rocks. In reading the reviews here, I knew it would be good, probably more for its historical value than for its unfiltered excitement. I was only half right. It nails it on both. This disc is a Who's Who of UFC, introducing one great fighter after another. What's outstanding about this perspective is that alot of the clips are complete fights and not just the knockouts or subs. They show fights lasting just a few seconds to the Gracie/Kimo 5 minute battle to the best rounds of marathon fights. I can't say enough good things about this. There's no time for a bathroom break in this barrage. You will see early no-weight-class Davey/Goliath fights with Tank A. in 1000-seat arenas with a broken Octogon door to modern Vegas matches including IceMan, Ortiz and Randy C. Every vicious step down memory lane is worth watching in this hour and a half. Phenomenal on many levels.

4 out of 5 stars BRUTAL hits.......2006-10-03

If you are a fan of the knockouts in UFC, than this is a must see. It is really fun for me to watch since I just picked up on MMA about 5 or 6 years ago. These are all from early UFC's and man is it fun to watch. It starts it off with a 400 pound guy going up against a 200 pound guy and 400 gets kicked in the face and his tooth goes flying a good 20 feet. It is a great opening to the rest of the fights since more than half of them end with a guy getting knocked unconcious or having blood streaming down his face. A few of the matches they don't show the whole fight and just show the action but most are so quick there is no need to shorten them.

This is a must buy for any fan who doen't want to buy all of the old UFC DVD's and just wants to see great knockout fights like Don Frye vs. Tank Abbot, Royce Gracie vs. Kimo, Dan Severn's first match in the UFC, Mark Colemen vs. Maurice Smith, Keith Hackney vs. 600 pound guy, Keith Hackney showing us how to punch a guy in the balls as hard as he can...

5 out of 5 stars Baddest Nights, Greatest Fights.......2006-03-22

This edition of UFC Hits takes us from UFC 1 all the way through to UFC 16, selecting choice fights from these events.

Royce Gracie is dominant in the earliest events, employing tactics that people simply weren't prepared to defend against. Gracie then slowly gives way to new talent as it emerges. There are quite a few Tank Abbott fights included, also. We get to see some of his most memorable fights and knockouts - but we then get to see the "end" of the Tank Abbott era when he meets young Vitor Belfort. Belfort thrashes Abbott very easily, utilizing his amazing hand speed and power. With Belfort came a new, higher level of talent into the UFC.

The Belfort/Couture fight is one of the best fights on the DVD (if not the very best). You will appreciate the fight regardless, but even moreso if you've seen their two more recent fights. These are two truly amazing mixed martial artists early in their UFC careers.

We then see Frank Shamrock emerge toward the end of this DVD edition, at about the same time Tito Ortiz makes his debut (still a college student at the time). There is a bonus interview conducted inside the octagon with Shamrock and Ortiz, as they were soon to face-off. This fight is included on UFC Hits 2.

This is a great collection of fights - there are about 40 fights totaling 2 hours of action. Classic knockouts, submissions and all-out battles... Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL!.......2006-02-10

Simply put, you must own this if you are an MMA fan. Buy it... NOW!

4 out of 5 stars The Gracie days.......2005-10-09

Back to the real old days, we see Royce Gracie against Kimo. That was a classic. We see the early days of Tank Abbott bashing people. We see Keith Hackney punch out a sumo wrestler. I used to watch every pay per view event back then. In what I consider the second generation of MMA stars, we see Don Frye belt some people out. He was really very good. Later on in the film we see some of the more modern stars.

This film reminds me of the days when MMA stars weren't well rounded. The sport began as a showcase to determine which was the best martial art. The BJJ guys cleaned up. They cleaned up to such an extent that nowadays everyone knows BJJ, and there is no such thing as a one-dimensional fighter anymore.

One fight I'm surprised is NOT on this collection is the most important MMA fight of the early days - when Royce Gracie triangle choked Dan Severn despite being about 100 pounds lighter.

To this day, I love the Gracies. I even took classes with a black belt who received his belt from the Gracies, and I attended a tournament run by Renzo Gracie. Modern fans of MMA should realize that the point isn't that this or that star can defeat a Gracie in the ring. The point is that MMA "IS" the Gracies. No Gracies, no MMA. It was the brain child of the Gracies, and they wrote the book on it. So what if others took their teachings and can now beat them at their own game. How can one family be expected to produce the very toughest men in the world generation after generation? It's unreasonable to expect that.

It is unfortunate that Rickson Gracie never fought in the UFC. My teacher told me that Rickson used to line up half a dozen Gracie relatives and beat them all easily, one after the other, like a chess master walking from table to table defeating a collection of players simultaneously.

To get films of Rickson, the greatest of the Gracies, you need to check out the Pride tournaments. My guess is that Rickson in his prime would do very well against today's crop. I'd love to see him against Andrei Arlovski, Randy Couture, or Chuck Liddell. I wouldn't bet against Rickson. I'd make him the favorite to be the greatest martial artist of our time.

1 out of 5 stars Belongs in a trash can!.......2007-05-06

This is absolutely the WORST boy band there is. Their mediocre voices and elementary dancing moves are an insult. I hope my trash can can swallow this awful DVD. What a waste of money!

3 out of 5 stars DVD Region and Video Format .......2007-01-06

This DVD is most likely imported from the UK so it is in the PAL video format. It may be region free but your DVD player must be able to convert from PAL to NTSC format in order to view it on a US television. Most Yamaha and higher end Denon players will do this.

4 out of 5 stars AWESOME CONCERT/ THESE MEN ARE GREAT.......2006-10-25

If I could of watched it, Amazon claims this plays on region 1 dvd. I have a region 1 dvd, it won't play. I could only play it on my computer. I have been a fan of Westlife since 1998. These men are the best at what they do.

5 out of 5 stars Region 1 DVD player.......2006-03-19

Before purchasing this DVD, I read the reviews stating that the DVD would work in Region 1 players if they weren't a combo DVD/VCR. This is not the case for me. It plays fine in my computer, but not at all in my Region 1 DVD Player.

Bit misleading. Great DVD, but can't watch it on a big screen and that kinda sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Advice for properly viewing this great DVD..........2005-10-14

I finally got this to play properly! This DVD played properly on my computer but did not play on my Region 1 DVD players. Both DVD players were DVD/VCR Combos. A friend recommended trying to play the DVD on a regular DVD player NOT a DVD/VCR Combo. It worked! So my advice if you want to purchase this DVD is to make sure you have an appliance that is solely a DVD Player and NOT a DVD/VCR combo. I think you'll have better luck getting it to play as it should. It's a great DVD for Westlife fans.

4 out of 5 stars We will always have the 70's.......2005-10-16

One night sometime in 2005 I was surfing the channels and came upon another one of those great PBS Pattie Labelle specials (Old School Soul Party Live) and decided to purchase the DVD (By the way it was great) if you have the DVD Titled: Super Stars of Seventies Soul Live with Pattie as host (you can buy Super Stars on Amazon) the later is just as good if not better. As I was saying after seeing the Stylistics I wanted to hear more of the oldies. I decide to buy the 70's Soul Jam Volume one, two and three. Now, first I must say all three volumes are very good. Volume one is ok but two and three are smoking! The first volume I believe the singers were warming up for "A Long Winters Night", their voices were a little shaky at first but believe me after that "It's On". The Stylistics is great on all three volumes. One thing that must be understood is that all the groups that were around in the 70's as they get older their vocals must fade. None of us will be the same 30 year from now "But I am sorry these guys are". Ok, now with that being said, the groups are Stylistics, Dramatics, Blue notes, Major Harris, Cuba Gooding, Delfonics and the Chi-lites. The Chi-lites without Ed Record are not the same please do not buy the DVD's for the Chi-lites you will be making a mistake. If you ever get a chance in watch the PBS special Title: Super Stars of Seventies Soul Live. Ed Record is singing with the Chi-lites in that Special I believe that was his last day view with the group before he died (could be wrong) "What a Man with a Voice". As I end I will say these groups sound very good just as they did in the 70's take my word I was there weren't you.

1 out of 5 stars Complete rip-off!!!.......2004-05-17

Warning! Avoid wasting your money on this garbage! Stylistics without Russell Thompkins, Chi-Lites without Eugene Record, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes without Harold Melvin!!! Somebody should be sued for releasing such crap and so cleverly avoiding giving the customer these details anywhere on the outside cover. One only makes this horrible discovery after opening the DVD!

2 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!!.......2004-04-26

If you are a true fan of 70's Soul music, I would recommend avoiding this DVD. I had just watched a wonderful 70's Soul show on Maryland Public Television, and was hoping that this would be somewhat similar to that. I was really disappointed, to say the least! The sound quality is horrible, and the performances were pretty sub-standard, with the possible exception of the Stylistics. The Chi-lites totally destroy "Oh Girl." It was painful to watch this video! I would not recommend it to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars the Show is nice but there could have been.......2004-03-01

Description

Missy the artist is cool, confident. Missy the producer/songwriter is in charge, innovative. This is Missy the video artist--off the wall and off the hook. The Hits of Miss E...The Videos, Volume 1 DVD and VHS feature four of her groundbreaking videos, all available for purchase for the first time. In addition, the DVD version includes behind-the-scenes footage and Surround Sound. This companion video to Missy's album Miss E... So Addictive leaves no doubt that Missy is as far ahead of the game in front of the camera as she is behind the mixing board and the microphone. "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," "Hit 'Em wit' da Hee," "She's a Bitch," "Get Ur Freak On."

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better........2004-04-27

There is a "parental advisory explicit content" label on the front cover and the videos are censored. The only explicit wod I've heard was "B+-*/" from the video : "She's A B,./]". That doesn't always need to be censored when it comes to tv. If there is a "parental advisory explicit content" label, there shouldn't be any censoring.

5 out of 5 stars Hit me Missy!.......2001-07-31

My two favorite videos are Hit em wit da hee and Get ur freak on. Hit em wit da hee is like a movie, and I like the dancing in it. Get ur freak on, to me, has a jungle feel to it. This DVD is a must have for Missy Elliott fans. Go cop it!

4 out of 5 stars For "Missy" Fans The World Over!.......2001-06-22

When I was younger, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott videos didn't arrive on MTV as much as they should have done. And so, for a meagre £9 in the UK, to own a valuable clutch of Miss E's finer forays into the world of music videos was essential. Only problems are that some may question the chosen selection, and at a tight 17 minutes you don't get much of Missy for your dollar.

Four videos are up for your DVD viewing pleasure. The first video is Missy's latest single, "Get Ur Freak On", her most successful effort taken from her third album "Miss E...So Addictive", mixing Missy's familair friends of hip hop and r'n'b, groovy post-"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" kung fu and a shedload of eastern influence. Vid is directed by Dave Meyers, responsible for Britney Spears' "Lucky". Her latest is followed by her first, Missy's debut single "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", her first of many videos directed by Hype Williams. All crazy costumes and wild colours, the inflatable bin bag suit remaining the infinite standout. Third up is "She's A B****", Missy and Hype's wildest foray into the format, all futuristic smoothness and extremeness. The videos finish up with the wonderful "Hit 'Em Wit Da Hee", a trip into Tim Burton-esque fantasy with a dash of Michael Jackson a la "Smooth Criminal" in Missy's flashy dance attire. Vid is directed by Paul Hunter, co-director of D'Angelo's awfully nude "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" video and is made all the more essential for being an evilly groovy remix, adding strings from Bjork's "Joga" for an intoxicating effect.

Not exactly elaborate on details as to why said videos look the way they do, nor how Missy's beats were inspired, but the DVD remains essential for Missy's fans everywhere. Expect "Sock It 2 Me", "Beep Me 911", "All N My Grill" and "Hot Boyz" for Volume 2.
