Product Description
A journey into the fascinating world of the Voudoun religion of Haiti filmed by Maya Deren during 1947-1951, and edited posthumously by Teji and Cherel Ito. The viewer attends the rituals of Rada, Petro and Congo cults, whose devotees commune with the cosmic powers through invocations - ritual offerings, song and dance. The Voudoun pantheon of deities, or Ioa are introduced as living gods, actually taking possession of their devotees. Also featured are the Rara and Mardi Gras celebrations. Although best known as a pioneer of independent experimental cinema, Maya Deren was also a Voundoun initiate, and hence able to take her camera and recorder where few have gone before or since. The soundtrack conveys the stirring, invocatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. Maya went first to Haiti as an artist, thining to make a film in which Haitian dance should be a leading theme. But the manifestation of rapture that first fascinated and then seized her transported her beyond the bounds of any art she had ever known. She was open to the messages of that speechless deep, which is, indeed, the wellspring of the mysteries.

Bardot Forever.......2007-05-25
This DVD is packed with 3 music specials and they will not disappoint if you are a fan of bardot or even just genuine fun. the music videos are sometimes campy, someimes hilarious- always entertaining. it is totally worth it.
La voir et l'écouter.......2006-05-17
Ce dvd est un enchantement de bout en bout. Le charme et la presence de BB restent aussi envoutants apres toutes ces annees.
another side of Brigitte.......2004-10-08
Brigitte Bardot was a French moviestar, who peaked to immortality in the second half of the fifties. She also loved singing, and that's where this DVD comes in.
Brigitte's clips (although the word wasn't used back then) are all shot in the sixties and seventies. We see how her awesome looks, as well as the tastefully chosen décors, more than compensate for any shortcomings in her singing.
So pictures are the main enjoyment here ..... they may be a little outdated, but they surely make you gasp. Divine is the right title for this well-made compilation.
Bardot: Divine Indeed!.......2004-10-06
This is an excellent, high quality DVD collection of three performances by Brigitte Bardot at the height of her sex-stardom, dating from 1961, 1963, and 1968. Of particular interest is the inclusion of the entire 1968 "Brigitte Bardot Show", certainly the highlight of this collection. It will make a fan out of any viewer, if not for the songs (for which no sub-titles are offered), then for the costumes and Bardot's kittenish sex-allure which is in full swing here. This features some of her best solo works such as "Harley Davidson", as well as duets with Serge Gainsbourg. A must for any serious Bardot fan or collector of 1960's kitsch.
Awesome collection of Brigitte Bardot's music videos!.......2004-07-03
I bought this disc from Amazon France several months back. This fantastic collection of music videos is a must for any Brigitte Bardot fan. Highly recommended. I especially love the videos from the 1968 French TV special, Brigitte Bardot Show.

Independent producer and author John Pierson (Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes) defines the 1970s American indie scene as "the three Johns: John Cassavetes, John Sayles, and John Waters." John Waters, Baltimore's king of sleaze, in such classy company? According to Pierson in this 1998 documentary, Waters had an even more profound impact on American cinema. Director Steve Yeager, a Waters intimate for decades (he plays a bit part in Pink Flamingos), gathers the surviving members of his stock company for a portrait of the director, from backyard puppet show impresario to the transgressive underground and exploitation director who grossed out America in the 1970s. A generous array of film clips is enriched with archival interviews with Divine, David Lochary, and Edith Massey, and a chorus of film critics and underground and independent directors.
Fully half of the film chronicles the making of Pink Flamingos, with actual behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot (including the most priceless direction ever captured on film: "David, act some more"). A plentiful portion pays tribute to Divine ("the Godzilla of drag queens"), whom Waters calls "my Elizabeth Taylor." The only real disappointment in this rich and highly entertaining documentary is that it ends with Flamingos, as if his entire career since is a mere coda to this cultural touchstone. But this portrait is so rich and detailed that it's a forgivable directorial choice. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
The "Brain" behind the "Beauty!".......2007-04-14
All freaks and weird people have experienced, by now, the absolute beauty and glamor if the 300 lb monstrosity, "Divine!" But what kind of Frankenstein could have created "HIr?" This little movie provides the answer!
Of course, the answer is: the deliciously hillarious perverted mind of John Waters! William S. Burroughs coined him as "The Pope Of Trash!" Yet Waters was raised normally in an upper class Baltimore family! Is it his fault that he became as a child obsessed with car accidents, trials of murderers and sleasy "B" movies? How could such environmental influences create the most tastefully outrageous antics depicted in his earlier films? This movie provides the answer!
There is a difference between mere shocking bad taste and bad taste that is so good that it generates a cult following! Here we see the delicious Divine give interviews that are as shocking as HIr films! We see the deliciously ugly Edith Massey glory in her new roles of glamor and stardom in John's movies. We see the hours and hours of rehearsals that Divine and the Dreamlanders did in front of the perfectionist Waters' cameras. There was a lot of work and planning that went on in even the most notorious scene of "Pink Flamingos:" the infamous Dog-Spoor scene!
John Waters.... we all await the day that you can once again release the tiger in you that created your early works! We all are getting too old to be "pattycaked" by your newer works! SHOCK US AGAIN!
Behind the Greatest Movie Ever Made.......2006-10-30
If your mind withstood "Pink Flamingoes", this is the movie for you. More than you ever wanted to know about John Waters and Divine (Peace Be Unto Him/Her).
DIVINE Trash is another mans treasure.......2005-10-02
This is a gr8 documentary on John Waters & DIVINE. Very informative & well put together. Talks about how John got his start in his insane flicks, has a mini interview with Edith Massey, behind the scenes footage & of course this DVD would not be complete without "DIVINE". DIVINE Trash is simply the best garbage i've seen in years. Loaded with unseen video footage & surprises. DIVINE Trash is a MUST 4 any Waters/DIVINE fan. Check it out, U won't regret it!! Schroeder (DJ WACK "O") (ORBITAL TRAXX RECORDS & Cult Movies Magazine).
Yeager is genius.......2005-06-29
I am a growing film maker, and currently belong to a film session, that is directed by this film's director, Mr. Steve Yeager, and he is a good friend of mine. All I'd like to say is that this movie is a great documentary, and if you havent seen it yet, i highly consider it. Steve also mentioned to me that it won "best documentary" in 1998 for the Maryland Film Fest. Pretty impressive! I also think that it is a great film that basically tells the story of the Baltimore-native film maker, John Waters. It includes so great early footage when John's film making was beginning to spark. Interviews with Water's parents, Steve Buschemi, and many more. Mr yeager is a great man, and this documentary is a great film.
A deep meditation on the nature of success.......2004-04-14
First let me say how pleased I was to find this DVD at my local public library!
From there I will go on to say what an impressive piece of work this is. Having long been a fan of the movie Hairspray, which raised my curiosity about Divine in the first place, a natural progression enabled my curiosity about John Waters. This is primarily his story, the story of his work, with plenty of interview time with him. What an intriguing individual! What a creative time and place he lived in! How fortunate for all freedom loving Americans that such explorations were possible in that time and place. I doubt they could ever happen today.
True, the films do seem to be in questionable taste, with little, if any, socially redeeming value. But look closer, and you may find your own reflection. What is the value of shock value? What are its drawbacks? What have we gained? What have we lost?
John Waters was not shallow, nor was he untintelligent. He was creatively inspired, and no matter how we react to his work, react we do. Such is the nature of art.
I feel like I got to know the man just a little, which is exactly what I wanted to do. I understood a little more about his work, and its success. Do I approve? I still don't know, but I do know that whether I approve or not doesn't matter.
I do approve of freedom. I believe that no one was hurt, and that violence was not empowered through the message, which makes many of today's movies filthy in comparison.
John Waters is an interesting individual. It would have been intruging to have been in his entourage. One could not have escaped coming out a changed individual. He created a cocoon, a chrysalis, where larvae were nurtured and outrageous butterflies emerged. They loved what they were doing, and they were successful.
If nothing else, it is a deep meditation on the nature of success in a country that considers it a superior export.

Boring!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-10
I realize this is an old movie - but it was very boring - and the ending was not satisfying.
Inspiriting classic that time has not eroded.......2006-11-28
This film is timeless in that it both charms and teaches.
Three old men with good hearts look for someone to celebrate Christmas with by throwing 3 wallets containg $[...] each into the street. A bet is made whether or not anyone would be honest enough to return them. Just as time was up and the bet over a young Texan rings the bell and returns the wallet. A few moments later a young woman returns another and the two fall in love. The three elderly gentleman have a tragic death after becoming close friends with the young couple. Their spirits return to their mansion where they set about helping the couple. One by one the elderly specters are called to their eternity until only one remains.
In my estimation no Christmas collection should be found without this warm hearted and sincere masterpiece of cinema.
I gave 5 stars for the movie itself, the dvd is somewhat lacking, without any special features and about half way through the movie, for a few seconds, there was a marked degradation of the transfer but only for a short time.
This is a personal favorite of mine and I hope that it will be to you as well.
A wonderful, heart-warming film.......2006-04-10
With spring, a young man's fancy turns to love - and so I sought out a romance to watch. Of course, being me, I chose a nontraditional sort of romance, one involving ghostly matchmakers. Since my own love life (or lack thereof) would seem to require some sort of supernatural intervention itself, Beyond Tomorrow seemed like a perfect choice. This 1940 classic is actually a Christmas movie, truth be told, but there's no harm in watching it whenever you like. After all, a failure to keep Christmas in your heart throughout the entire year leaves you vulnerable to nocturnal visits from the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
Beyond Tomorrow tells a simple but touching story. It all starts with three older gentlemen who share the same house and work together running an engineering firm. Chad (C. Aubrey Smith) and Michael (Charles Winninger) are all business, working late on Christmas Eve, while George (Harry Carey) enjoys Christmas as a jolly Irishman should. When he learns that his invited guests are unable to join him and his friends for Christmas Eve dinner, George forestalls the two old fogeys' idea of heading out to the club by inviting two strangers for dinner. Each of the men sticks ten dollars and his card in a new wallet, pitches it out onto the snowy sidewalk, and waits to see if fate (and an honest heart or two) will bring any good deed doers to their door. Two out of three ain't bad, as a young Texan (Richard Carlson) and a charming young teacher (Jean Parker) end up joining them for dinner. The two young folks quickly fall in love, spending many a happy hour in the company of their three unassuming benefactors over the following few weeks. Even as they make plans for a lifetime together, however, they lose their three good friends in an airplane crash. And so it is that Chad, Michael, and George return home in ghostly form. And it's a good thing they do, as the young lovers soon face some rocky times, as new-found success as a singer and the attentions of another fashionable young lady turn the young Texan's head.
I'm a little surprised this film isn't more widely known, as it really does tell a wonderful story. The love story itself actually pales in comparison to the lives (and deaths) of the three older gentlemen. George's two friends gradually lose their crusty edges by the time their personal calls from heaven come, but it is the warm-hearted George (who, even as a ghost, cares more about the young lovers' happiness than his own eternal rest) that really steals the show and makes this such a should-be Christmas classic. A powerful performance by the wonderful Maria Ouspenskaya adds further emotion to a truly heart-warming story.
Beyond Christmas.......2006-02-01
I really enjoyed the movie. I thought that it was light, entertaining and shows the true meaning of Christmas.
Beyond anything I have ever seen for Christmas.......2006-01-12
I liked most, that this movie was not a typical Christmas plot. Three men whom are stood up by their Christmas guest decide to make a bet. They each take a wallet with a $10.00 bill that were for gifts, and place a business card of their own inside of it. They open the window and through all the wallets out onto what is a typical busy sidewalk during the holiday season. They wanted to see if anyone would find and return the wallets. Then they would invite this person to join in a Christmas Dinner. Two of the wallets returned. One from a young man and the other a young women. It just so happens that both are away from home and family on this holiday season and accept the three mens offer of the Christmas Dinner. The group become great friends and spend all their time together, until a plane crash takes the lives of the 3 gentlemen whom had taken a business journey together. The three men's spirits return to the house where they had always gathered to share a cigar or brandy.
Throughout the movie, one by one the heavens call and a loved one appears to show them the way to heaven. All except one man who fights to stay a little longer to help the young couple through some trying times. He sacrifices what is to be his one chance at going to the heavens above to stay behind and help the ones he loves through some trying times. The rest you have to see for yourself. One thing is sure, when it is my time to go I hope it is just like this movie - just beautiful.
