This 1973 televised concert announced to the world that Frank Sinatra's retirement was over. In a setting that balances the intimacy of nightclubs with a concert hall layout, Sinatra (backed by a 40 piece orchestra led by Gordon Jenkins and Don Costa) confidently delivers a slate of quintessentially Frank tunes: "I Get a Kick Out of You," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "I've Got the World on a String," and a short medley of ballads. A series of "singing sailor" film clips introduces guest star Gene Kelly, who joins Sinatra in a self-effacing song and dance number called, "We Can't Do That Anymore," followed by a gentle Kelly tap dance to Sinatra's rendition of "Nice and Easy." Having mined the past, Sinatra looks to the future with three new numbers: "Let Me Try Again," the beautiful "Send in the Clowns," and "You Will Be My Music." Sinatra's voice is no longer in its prime, but his phrasing and showmanship are topnotch and his interaction with an audience nice and easy. The Chairman of the Board wasn't just back, he was back on top singing his songs. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:
One of Frank's best concerts!.......2007-06-13
Yes, Frank is all that and a must see concert, for any Frank Sinatra lover! I purchased one for my dear friend, who is a die hard lover Frank Sinatra fan and one for myself. I'm glad I went with my intuition, and gave myself a gift, one that could be watched over and over again. Maureen F., Toms River, N.J.
sad state of sinatra on DVD..........2005-12-07
I see that a deluxe five DVD set of Barbra Streisand's TV specials has been released recently... So why doesn't Warner/Reprise do the same thing for Frank Sinatra's classic TV specials? Could "The Family" be involved perhaps...? Sure, they can get behind a phony "Sinatra at the Palladium" multi-media extravaganza where you watch 20-foot projected videos of Sinatra singing accompanied by a live orchestra thanks to "unprecedented access to Frank Sinatra's film archives"... but they can't seem to get Sinatra's video performance legacy released appropriately on DVD...
The classic 1960s, 70s, and 80s musical TV specials (A Man and His Music Part I & II, Sinatra+Ella+Jobim, The Main Event, etc...) are still being sold as individual DVDs at full price ($15-$20 each). They are each about 50 minutes long with "stereo" sound (actually "2-channel mono" I think) with no bonus features whatsoever, packaged in flimsy plastic and cardboard cases.
Why don't they compile all 9 of the Reprise Collection Sinatra TV specials in a 3-DVD package with 3 specials per DVD? Price it at about $40-$50, include some bonus goodies (there must be hours of stuff in the vaults... better go with 4 DVDs!) and give this material the deluxe, classy treatment it deserves.
Surely this would sell well enough to justify the minimal investment required (just repackaging/remastering the same old material for the most part). Wouldn't a DVD set like this be a better 90th birthday "limited edition" release than reissuing the sub-standard Duets CDs again? And what about all the amazing unreleased audio that remains stagnating in the vaults...? Get with the program, folks!
I am truly very happy for all you Babs fans though! You're "the luckiest people in the world..."
Coulda Been Longer.......2005-10-14
Ol Blue Eyes is in top form. Absolutely wonderful stuff here. I just wish there was more than 50 minutes worth of video. I'll watch this over and over again, but I can't believe that someone can't go through the Sinatra archives and find the fans a compilation of his work for DVD. 50 minutes goes by pretty fast. He sings his songs as though each piece is a theatrical performance. Wonderful.
As good as it gets.......2005-08-12
My first introduction to "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back" was the 1973 LP, not the program recorded that same year that's on this DVD. In both, however, is one of the finest songs that Sinatra ever recorded, Joe Raposo's composition, "You Will Be My Music," which starts and closes the performance on the DVD. Add to that another fine composition, "Let Me Try Again," and then throw in some of the very tasty Sinatra standards, and then top it off with a segment with the great Gene Kelly (their performance of "Nice and Easy" is worth the price of admission by itself), and this is an outstanding near-hour of entertainment.
The Sinatra voice is not what it was in the '50s, but it's still better than most, and, as always, the delivery is impeccable.
An almost near classic.......2005-04-23
Frank was back. Yes, he's older, a bit heavier and his voice perhaps is now only 75-80% of what it was in his hey day. BUT....his magic and skill of phrasing and interpretation is still intact and perhaps more mature and grand now. It would continue to grow even after 1973 and IMO peak out around 1980.
This program indeed provides you a good cross section of
a) Sinatra, the swaggering swinger
b) Sinatra, the lonely saloon singer
c) Sinatra, the song and dance man with master Gene Kelly.
d) Sinatra, the contemp and still relevant artist addressing contemporary material of the early 70s.
The highlights are the saloon medley arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins and SEND IN THE CLOWNS..also arranged by Jenkins. Sinatra sings from deep within the heart, the pain and the sadness...and you can feel it. The arrangements are superb and have the perfect amount of emotion like you would expect from Gordon Jenkins.
I am glad he came back cause in 1990 I got to see him. By that time, his status as legend was cemented for good.
OL'BLUE EYES came back, he left us in 1998 but HE'S with us through his songs.
