Taped at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on June 28, 2003, Matchbox Twenty's Show depicts a hard-working rock band in its prime and in its element. The full spectacle of Matchbox Twenty's More Than You Think You Are tour comes across, from the band's world-class lights to its lock-tight playing, recorded and mixed for 5.1-channel surround and shot in gloriously film-like high-definition video under the direction of Hamish Hamilton (Madonna, U2, Jennifer Lopez).

As on record, Matchbox Twenty's acute sensitivity to pop dynamics carries the day, showcasing drummer Paul Doucette's propulsive attacks, lead guitarist Kyle Cook's vocals and fretwork, and the soulful belting of lead singer-songwriter Rob Thomas. (The less said of Thomas's occasional piano playing, the better.) The concert itself is free from interview footage and other distractions, and the 45-minute documentary included on disc 2 is candid and focused, revealing the effort required to mount and execute an arena tour.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is the best way to hear the concert, even if you collapse it to stereo, as the Dolby 2.0 tracks are marred by matrixed SRS Circle Surround 5.1 encoding. The presence of the SRS processing is confusing, given the superior Dolby-only sound and the broad household penetration of Dolby-based AV receivers. Alas, there's no DTS surround mix (as advertised in print) or CD-quality PCM stereo mix. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-04

Matchbox Twenty is one of our favorite bands and my son's favorite rock star is Rob Thomas.

5 out of 5 stars Sound Problems?.......2006-12-17

I don't have any special sound system, simply a standard television and cheapo DVD player but I had no problems with the sound on the DVD as others have mentioned. With that said, this is an essential for any Matchbox 20 fan. In fact, I'm bringing it home at Christmas for my aunt who also enjoys their music but has never been to a Matchbox 20 concert.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2006-11-20

I loved the concert but the crowd noise was a little much, kind of drowned out the music at times. Loved the songs on the DVD...Rob Thomas is a musical wonder. I also ordered the VH1 Storytellers at the same time. I liked it better. Way cool.

5 out of 5 stars Not a huge fan of concerts DVD's..........2006-11-15

I'm a lover of concerts, but not live CDs and DVDs just because it usually doesn't feel the same. That said, I've been meaning to purchase one of Jason Mraz's live DVD's because I've recently become a fan. All the reviews said the sound was horrible, so I wondered if maybe it was the people reviewing it that didn't get the whole live experience. I hopped over here because SHOW is my VERY FAVORITE live DVD and I figured I'd read great reviews. You're here, so you've read all the takes on the sound being horrible and whatnot. I'm wondering what DVD they were playing because I turn it up super loud and clean my house, feeling like I'm at a real Matchbox 20 concert--and I've seen them play once, Rob Thomas himself twice--yet there are complaints.
Listen, if you like Matchbox 20, this DVD is awesome. If you don't, this DVD is still awesome. I became a real Matchbox 20 fan after seeing 'em live. Maybe people are annoyed with sound because they're jealous they weren't there screaming their heads off too...
I'm about to get that Jason Mraz live. You can tell me this wasn't helpful, but I wish I would read more reviews like this...

5 out of 5 stars a superb dvd concert.......2006-10-19

i have lots of collections of dvd concerts & this is one of the best concerts i can highly recommend.
