This moving, absorbing documentary is about the making of singer-songwriter Warren Zevon's final CD, the much-admired, star-studded The Wind. But more than that, it's about the final year of Zevon's life, and the way he approached what he called his "imminent demise" (which came in September '03). Zevon surely didn't plan on dying of lung cancer (although given his wry, sly, subversive sense of humor, he probably saw it as a good career move). But when doctors gave him the word, he became driven by an intense desire, and then urgency, to finish the music and leave a lasting farewell before his final goodbye; and he did, with the help of Bruce Springsteen, members of the Eagles, Ry Cooder, and others. Zevon is without self-pity; he knows what's coming, he's dealing with it, and in the process, an artist who'd always been preoccupied with death in his songs wrote some of his best when faced with his own mortality. Add to that a generous helping of bonus material (videos of two songs from The Wind, with Springsteen on "Disorder in the House"; interviews, home movies, excerpts from the sessions), and you've gotta figure Zevon himself would be pleased. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars KISSOLGY 2 IS GONNA ROCK!!!.......2007-07-04

I look foward to this so much! Kiss Meets The Phantom is so cool I have a bootleg I bought of it & The Largo show (the only bonus disc Im getting)!
I watched Vs the Phantom the first time on TV I had a 13" panasonic B/W TV in my room my parants wouldnt watch it with me in the frontroom!

I think KISS should have never taken they're makeup off I bought the CDs but just preteneded they didnt. It was like Batman going on TV & taking off his cowl!
I didnt want to know they're secret identities. There they were without they're super powers as ordinary mortals.

I had to buy all 3 last time to get all the bonus discs & next one I am sure will be reunion shows bonus discs so I will have to get all 3!

I dont want to watch them without makeup so I am excited I only gotta buy 1 copy!

Does anybody know where the Largo Bonus disc will be?

5 out of 5 stars Solid Follow Up To Vol. 1.......2007-07-04

KISSology Vol. 1 was one of the greatest music DVD's ever released. A tremendous collection of great, vintage KISS concerts and TV apperances, KISSology really raised the bar when it comes to career retrospectives on DVD.

Now, KISS is releasing (or has released, depending on when you read this), the 2nd volume in the KISSology series, covering 1978-1991. It's got almost everything from that era that fans have wanted on DVD (almost, there are some exceptions) - The Land of Hype and Glory, The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder (Ace is a RIOT), Australia 1980, FRIDAYS (!!!), Brazil 1983, a couple songs from the first post-makeup concert, and a complete concert from one of their greatest tours ever - the Hot In The Shade tour! Leon Sphinx was pretty darned cool as the centerpiece, and the band was ON!

There are some other goodies, but the one I intentionally left out until now is KISS in ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS - the European theatrical version of KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. Supposedly there are scenes cut from the US version, and the score is different in parts as well. This will be a lot of fun to watch - as long as you "get it." It's a 70's campy TV movie, and for that time and genre it is a lot of fun.

The DVD ends with the passing of the great Eric Carr (I had the opportunity to meet him in 1990 - he truly was a great guy, and he is very much missed), leaving the Revenge era for Vol. 3.

Could there be more on there from the 80's? Animalize Live Uncensored is a glaring omission, as is anything from the entertaining Asylum tour, but this is still one heck of a tracklisting and another great release!

5 out of 5 stars Largo MD.......2007-07-03

I am so psyched for this but a couple of things trouble me:

1. The Largo Capital Centre 1979 should be a given but from what i hear it will be only a bonus disc on some releases?

2. If they are including Kiss Meets The Phantom they should also include the Animalize Live concert. Both are good for a laugh! Gene's wig alone in the Animalize tour is hilarious, not to mention that concert has some of the best crowd footage since Heavy Metal Parking Lot!

4 out of 5 stars where's the "animalize" concert?.......2007-06-29

I know this will still be a set worth having, but they really should include the animalize concert from 1984. I don't think Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons liked these years very much. Gene had gone hollywood and really didn't contribute much to the band. Paul really kept the band together at the time and is the reason they survived the 80'S. Maybe that's why they're doing a rush job on the 80'S and jump to the "Hot in the shade" tour.
I'm also glad they decided to include "Kiss meets the phantom of the park". I have the old goodtimes VHS copy and it's pretty worn out. I just hope they clear it up and remaster it. I had a feeling they wouldn't include the "Dynasty" concert only because the footage they have isn't very good quality. Instead, we get the concert they did in 1980, which is just as good.
I always thought the concert they did in rio in 1983 was a full concert, but i guess it isn't. I will mention that you may want to wait and see what's going to be on the bonus disk included at certain retailers. Kiss did this with the first volume. If you don't care, pre-order today.

3 out of 5 stars KISSOLOGY Volume II...You Wanted the Best, You Got The, well, ummm............2007-06-26

Ok, let me see if I got this right....volume I had FOUR complete concerts on only TWO dvds...volume II will have only TWO complete concerts on THREE dvds???!!! What's wrong with this picture?

I suspect that I'm not alone when I express my disappointment with the track listing on the KISSology volume II. I believe that 13 years is too many years to cover on a 3 dvd set...especially when you take into consideration the amount of video footage KISS has hidden in their vault. There's no reason why they can't include a pro-shot concert from each and every tour. We KNOW the footage exists! What are they waiting for? This is their chance to give back to the loyal KISS Army. We've been waiting too long for these dvd sets and now that they're finally here, we're still getting short changed! Where's the Dynasty Tour? Any Elder footage, besides the Friday's stuff...? A FULL Creatures show?? Asylum show? Yeah, we're getting a full Unmasked show, which is HUGE!, but there's room for so much more. As far as including the Crazy Nights show from Japan, any KISS fan has had that show on vhs for nearly 15 years already. Same goes for "Phantoms".

And while they're giving us stuff we already have, how about, at least, a complete music video collection restored/remastered?

I think KISS could have done a much better job on volume II after doing such a great job on volume I. I know this review is based soley on the track listing that's been revealed, but a true KISS fan will be left wanting much, much more after viewing volume II.

Maybe we'll get lucky and a few of the bonus discs will have some real rare footage.

5 out of 5 stars Good-Bye My Friend.......2007-05-12

A heart-felt tribute to a man so far ahead of his peers it's scary. His kind come among us far too seldomly. This planet is better becaused he crossed our path. It hurts to watch it.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Send-Off for Warren.......2007-01-03

This is well worth watching for any Zevon fan. I wish there was more of the appearance on Letterman however. Anyway, I found it interesting, funny and sad.

5 out of 5 stars A bittersweet look at Warren Zevon's last days..........2006-08-27

You don't have to be a big fan of Warren Zevon - although I am - to enjoy this poignant look at his final days, as he records his brilliant final album. His visit from Bruce Springsteen, and to David Letterman's "Late Show," are particularly moving.

1 out of 5 stars Good Times.......2005-03-10

The late Warren Zevon was the Grim Reaper's personal poet laureate and court jester throughout his long career. Hard to believe that only one of these songs (as far as I know) was written after he learned of his diagnosis. Son Jordan and longtime producer/cowriter/bassist Jorge Calderon assembled many of Zevon's closest collaborators, sidemen, cronies and admirers for a romp through both the sardonic, gallows-humor pieces he was famous for, but also the vulnerable, emotionally raw ballads he was equally adept at writing and delivering.

Zevon liked singing actors for their ability to deliver the emotional content of a song, so he'd be pleased by Sandler's surprisingly muscular

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-01-16

VH1 (Inside) Out is great.

Every Warren Zevon fan, and even if you are not a fan, will love it.

As KISSology - Vol. 1 (1974-1977) announces loudly, all the chutzpah and bombast that made KISS so huge--the fire-breathing, the blood-dripping, the kabuki-mask make-up and platform shoes, the synchronized head-bobs--were in place from the very beginning. KISS's 1974 concert in San Francisco is virtually identical to their 1977 concerts in Japan and Houston, at the peak of their popularity. For hardcore fans, this opportunity to bask in the nuances of five performances of "Black Diamond" and six performances of "Firehouse" is essential viewing, but for the less committed the pleasures of KISSology lie in the bizarre collisions pop culture is heir to: Gene Simmons, in full costume, declaring himself "evil incarnate" on The Mike Douglas Show; Margaret Hamilton, done up in her Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch of the West garb, introducing KISS to the ever-cackling Paul Lynde on Lynde's 1976 Halloween special (the footage from this special doesn't include the tender ballad "Beth", undoubtedly due to the estrangement of drummer Peter Criss, who sang the band's highest charting U.S. single); and the truly surreal incident where KISS went to Cadillac, Michigan, and had breakfast with the entire city council wearing full KISS makeup before the band made a spectacular exit by helicopter. Rock & roll is full of strange phenomena, but KISS is one of the most inexplicable: An adolescent fever dream of superheroic hedonism that somehow achieved world-wide stardom and kept its career alive for over 30 years. KISS started as a deliberate cartoon, became a bad joke, and have re-emerged as a fond memory, still cranking out pyrotechnic spectacle. Three volumes of KISSology is probably excessive, but why stop the excess now? --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars We Haven't Played This One In A Verrrry Long Time!.......2007-06-20

In the 70s Kiss was it. It was cool to be into Kiss. In the 80s, it was the exact opposite. By the late 80s and early 90s the makeup was off and Kiss were a (no pun intended) washed up "bunch of posers."

This DVD dispels the myth that Kiss were ever posers. They indeed were always great musicians and they were the inspiration for many metal bands rocking your world today (rumor has it that while backstage at a 70s Kiss show Eddie Van Halen's signature guitar tapping was inspired while seeing Ace Frehley do it). And Kiss so happen to have put on one of the most theatrical shows in rock and roll history.

And that history is captured on this 2-disk DVD, albeit mostly with terrible video quality.

Man, did I ever enjoy being able to see the original line-up of Kiss perform on these disks. The thing is that the awesome performances on these disks are mostly footage from 1974 - 1977 live shows, so the quality is early 70s video...and that ain't good. Often times in the live performances there are major reminders that the video is dated: horizontal lines across the picture, complete picture blackouts and just plain old low quality video.

On the other hand, the audio on the first two disks is a completely different story. The audio wizards cleaned up the sound on Disks 1 & 2 and they've offered it with a terrific 5.1 Dolby mix.

After enjoying what was more of a front row seat experience with the quality HD video and surround sound on the awesome, 5-star Rock the Nation 2004 DVD by Kiss, the live performances in the Kissology set were reduced to mere DVD viewings. However, it was great to reminisce and watch as Gene, Paul, Ace & Peter went through their classics of the era. And the Kissology set that I got included a 3rd bonus disk that to my surprise was a show from Madison Square Garden in February 1977 THAT I WAS AT! (Bonus disks were limited with various versions when this was released in 2006, so check the set at point of purchase if possible.)

Regardless of the horrible video, all of the performances reflect the great show that Kiss put on: clear, effortlessly powerful vocals, some of the coolest guitar work of the time, Gene's signature bass and Peter's 101 Hard Rock drumming sound.

If you were/are a fan of Kiss...especially the early days...don't pass on this. Just be sure that your expectations are set for a view into the past with the past's picture quality. The performances are 5 stars; the audio is 4 stars; the picture quality is 2 stars. The opportunity to have this set on DVD and the nostalgia the set offers are 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Why is there a KISS Army?.......2007-06-15

Because of performances like the ones captured here, millions of people became diehard fans of four guys from New York who wore more make-up than your Mom. The shows here capture the band at their zenith. All four original members, all the bombastic power and some great, great rock and roll.
Shortly after the '77 show recorded here, the band began to implode into disco, identity issues and a revolving door policy for guitarists. Yes, they made a brief comeback but greed quickly turned the band into a joke...a tribute band to itself.
There will never be a band like the original KISS again and Kissology is a testament to Ace, Peter, Paul and Gene...the hottest band in the world. Buy this DVD and see us old guys remember KISS so fondly.

5 out of 5 stars What It Takes To Make It.......2007-04-20

This is an awesome collection of live performances and extras that really show what it took to make it in the music biz. These guys had the hunger and the drive.

5 out of 5 stars Glory Days.......2007-03-08

I've seen KISS live a dozen times. This is as good as it gets without being there. It's great to see them as I rememeber from my youth. The extras are good. The video and sound quality are excellent. This is meant for a big screen and home theater turned up as loud as it goes. If it's too loud you're to old.

4 out of 5 stars Lot's & Lot's of old video.......2007-02-24

Great DVD for Kiss lovers. It's loaded with tons of vids from the 70's. Also great price for two DVD's. Great deal for anyone who's a Kiss fan...

You've read the positive reviews. They're all right on the money. We need more volumes like this one and the sooner the better.

4 out of 5 stars Spoiled By The Bootlegs!.......2007-04-11

Well, after comparing the disks, to what I have in my vhs archives, here's what I've got. First of all, I am pleased, in general with the release of the dvd. That being said, I caught a few note-worthy glitches.

1. All concerts, excluding the "Winterland" performance, are overdubbed with "crowd response", assumingly, to give the viewing that massive crowd appeal. I prefer the raw, untapped audio of the crowd, as it was. To hear the "fake" crowd response, is like listening to a "live" cd (which is rarely "live"), or better yet...like watching a fight on ESPN Classic, listening to two commentators calling the fight "after the fact", as opposed to listening to the commentators calling the fight, as it happened!

2. The Summit '77 concert ends with a "spliced" version of "Rock And Roll All Nite". Two shows were performed, and video archived at the Summit, during the Love Gun tour. Since the RARAN guitar solo is omitted from the original recording of the second night, the editors of the dvd (possibly Tommy Thayer), spliced in the guitar solo from the first night performance. Obviously noticeable due to the difference in lighting; the first night performance was much darker in lighting than the second. Even more noticeable, the splice in was way too soon, for it begins with Gene singing the second set of verses twice, before getting to Ace's solo.

3. The "bonus" disk I have is of the Madison Square Garden '77 performance. It is a much reduced version of the bootleg; 27 minutes in all. Due to the poor audio quality of the opening number (Detroit Rock City) from the original video recording, the audio was over-dubbed with the Budokan performance, up until around the end of the first set of verses.

4. The Gene /Paul audio is practically worthless. I was expecting something more along the lines of insite on each performance i.e. "This is waht I was thinking before this performance", or "Ace was smashed during this performance", or "I wanted to kill Gene, when he forgot the words to this song!" Check out Motley Crue's dvd music video collection; they critique every music video they ever made.

On the positive, the quality of the dvd's (audio / video) is waaaayyy better than the boots, which makes up for the "wining" points I make. Also, there are nuggets of goodies throughout. No need to mention them; they're listed above.

And one last thing; what's the difference between this KISSology dvd listing and the other one, "Kissology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 1: 1974-1977"?:-)

Can't wait for Volume II!

5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome!.......2007-03-25

This DVD set is amazing!!! It is everything you want from Kiss' glory days from 1974-1977, and some clips never seen before straight from their archives. The quality of both audio and video is excellent throughout, and the concerts featured are classic shows from a band in its prime. If you were ever into this band, you will need this set in your collection, it's that simple!

5 out of 5 stars Kiss fans were waiting for that for decades.......2007-03-08

This a dream came true for die hard kiss fans. If you are one of them, you know what I'm talking about. Just can't wait for the followings DVD in 2007.
Maybe the concerts sound could be better improved with a little more digital technology, but it's OK.

5 out of 5 stars Many clips you have seen some you may not have Great!.......2007-02-20

A true documentary of the begining- with clips and appearences you may have seen as a kid...there all here! Great- including the coverage of Cadilac High was cool- I had seen photos-but this was the filmed footage of the event! Very cool. For the true Kiss Fan a must have....but they know that.

The relative intimacy of the Storytellers stage is appropriate for an artist like Sarah McLachlan, who in the course of this 10-song, 55-minute performance establishes an easy and close rapport with her audience. In truth, empires will neither rise nor fall, and few lives are likely to be changed, on account of McLachlan's music. But the guiding light of Lilith Fair is an honest, unpretentious artist with a lovely voice (those distinctive little swoops at the end of melodic phrases bring to mind fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell) and a passel of tunes that reflect the self-professed influence of writers like Cat Stevens, Joan Baez, and Peter Gabriel. There's no "I Will Remember You" here, but McLachlan and her excellent band (including husband Ashwin Sood on drums) perform strong versions of the catchy "Ice Cream," the heartfelt "Hold On," and others, with Paula Cole guesting on "Elsewhere" and McLachlan also performing solo at the piano. She doesn't rock like Sheryl Crow; she's not odd like, say, Tori Amos; and she (like pretty much everyone else) lacks the burning originality of Mitchell. But simply being Sarah McLachlan is plenty good enough. --Sam Graham

Description

More than just the mind behind Lilith Fair, Sarah McLachlan is the lush voice from some of the most beautiful and haunting melodies in recent memory. The Canadian songstress broke out in 1993 wit her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, inspired by her experience working on a documentary about poverty and child prostitution. Then came Mirrorball, which gave rise to enchanting songs like "Building a Mystery" and "I Will Remember You." And we"ve got them right here in rock's most intimate setting, so sit back, relax, and get ready to go one-on-one with the artists you love " and the songs you only thought you knew. Includes Good Enough, Building a Mystery, Ice Cream, Sweet Surrender, Hold On, Elsewhere, Possession, Witness, Angel

5 out of 5 stars Insight Into Sarah.......2007-03-03

Watching this DVD is like watching Sarah McLachlan perform in your living room. She is an excellent performer with a beautiful voice and presence. Liking her songs and then listening to the stories behind the songs gave me so much more appreciation for her.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah at her best with her hubby drumming and Paula shows up to sing a song too!.......2007-01-11

I almost can't get enough of this concert DVD. A very nice sound quality and video quality. If you like Sarah (Paula Cole too), you have to get this DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Intimate and beautiful performance.......2006-08-20

It's a little short but as wonderful as every single performance she's ever made. The special thing about it is that it's like an unplugged. It's the concert and no extra stuff. If you are a fan, you must have it!

4 out of 5 stars Short.......2006-05-30

It is very dissapointing that VH1 format allows less than an hour (10 songs at the most). We own Rod Stewart, The Doors & Meatloaf concerts as well and same thing!

Many great songs were left out. Thought that comments behind songs were to be a bit more extensive. Great interpretation. Great edition. Great buy for a Sarah fan!

5 out of 5 stars VH1 Storytellers - Sarah McLachlan.......2006-05-30

I've been listening to Sarah McLachlan for years and I saw this on "VH1" when it originally aired. If you taped Sarah McLachlan on "VH1 Storytellers" when it originally aired like I did and are a devoted fan, this is a must have DVD.

The feature performances are for "Good Enough," "Building a Mystery," "Ice Cream," "Sweet Surrender," "Hold On," "Elsewhere," "Possession" "Witness" and "Angel." The last two performances are bonuses which weren't on the original VH1 show. Sarah has a beautiful voice and very powerful words and this was truly an amazing DVD.

I was moved by the passion and emotion and the meaning behind the lyrics. This DVD has terrific sound and features flawless live performances. In between songs Sarah talks about some of them and answers questions from the audience. The answers weren't as long as I hoped they'd be, but they did provide good insight into the music - and it is all about the music after all.

The trademark snarl and sneer are still in place, but it's a somewhat mellower, more reflective, middle-aged Billy Idol who takes center stage in this latest installment of the Storytellers series. Backed by a band including longtime cohort Steve Stevens on guitar, the one-time punk pioneer works his way through 15 songs (among which are 8 that didn't make the original cable broadcast, including a superb reading of "Eyes Without a Face") over the course of the 104-minute concert, pausing between tunes to reflect on times that "weren't meant to be remembered," as Idol puts it. More than half the show is performed semi-acoustically; it's odd to hear the likes of "White Wedding" and "Rebel Yell" played as acoustic duets, but they work. And when Stevens brings out his electric for "Dancing with Myself," "Mony Mony," and others, the joint rocks. DVD bonus features include a music-only option for those who want to forgo Billy's rap. --Sam Graham

So sit back, relax, and get ready to go one-on-one with the artist behind the songs you only thought you knew. Features 8 songs not included in the original broadcast! 4 out of 5 stars Billy Idol at his near-best.......2007-06-12

A fun, fast-moving live appearance by legendary rock singer Billy Idol, featuring reminiscences intercut with musical performances. If you're a Billy Idol fan, as I am, you'll enjoy this disc a lot. My only complaint is that the sonic quality is not as good as on most of Billy's CDs. I don't know if this is because of recording problems or because the soundtrack on DVDs is compressed to accomodate both audio and video on the same disc, but the lower quality is noticeable on a good system. Still, if you just want to rock out with one of the '80s best performers, this disc is a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this is great!.......2007-04-25

Oh my goodness! I thought I was into Billy Idol in the 80's, but after watching this I have fallen in love with him over and over 10 times more! His is so sexy and Steve Stevens is great! I love this!

5 out of 5 stars billy idol.......2007-02-12

It is great. Steve Stevens is great. I think the crowd was great. The show was great. The audio was great. I think the DVD was great.

5 out of 5 stars Still a Rocker!.......2007-01-04

The years has been kind to him. He's still got what it takes to rock the house. There are few different versions of some of the classics, but they're just more refined. If you're a fan of the eighties music, you'll love this selection. Steve Stevens is one of the best guitarists ever!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!.......2006-11-06

I have always been a fan of Billy Idol from way back. This DVD though, the show he put on was amazing. I have watched this DVD at least a couple times a week since I bought it back in August. I love all the stories behind the songs and was blown away by where some of them came from. I won't spoil it for you, but just say that if you like Billy Idol's music even a little bit this is surely the treat of a lifetime! You won't be disappointed.

This concert contained everything I wanted and was so nostalgic. I highly recommend it to the Donna Summer fans.

5 out of 5 stars Live and Much , Much more. . . .......2006-08-04

Donna Summer was a radiant 48 years old at the time of this great live 1997 or 1998 VH1 concert. While Summer had long shed her voracious "Bad Girl" image of the seventies, quite a bit of her ponyish beauty has remained intact. This concert does full justice to her still-beautiful chameleon-like voice as she moves easily from full-throated disco ("MacArthur Park") to pop standards (an exquisite version of Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me")and broadway ("If There is Music There,"), to pop-rock ("She Works Hard for the Money,"), country ("I Don't Wanna Work"), sultry gospel-blues ("Riding Through the Storm") and back again. Summer's rapport, ease and generosity with the audience is equally gratifying. Not unlike many other great artists of yesteryear, old concert footage of Summer is hard to come by, so this DVD is the definitely the next best thing. The sound quality is absolutely amazing--especially given that it came out in 1998, around the time that DVDs first took off! At its best, this concert effectively showcases all the qualities--part glamour girl, comedienne, tough renegade, devoted wife and mother--that set Donna Summer apart from the rest of the pack.

4 out of 5 stars Nostolgia.......2006-07-03

For those that remember MacAurthurs Park and some of the other hit of Donna Summer it is a great DVD. I could have lived without the preachy parts and would have liked to see more of her popular songs.

2 out of 5 stars If you are expecting the "Queen of Disco" backed with Giorgio Moroder, it's not on this performance.......2006-04-07

This show is just another typical Las Vegas type show offering work and exposure for fading pop star "has-beens".

This live show is so much less than the true Donna Summer fan would want to have. This concert performance does not reflect the "Queen of Disco", that you would probably hope to see and hear. The Donna Summer here compared to the Donna Summer of "one's expectation" is like comparing a small pocket AM radio to a huge 70-piece orchestra in an acoustically sound concert hall. I know that's an extreme exaggerated comparison, but, I'm sure you know what I mean.

I know many of you may not agree with me, but it is obvious to me that you don't really know the core of Donna Summer's success. This show had a great deal of absence of something very important about Donna Summer. Her founder and creator, Giorgio Moroder.

In the 1980's, I took to liking Donna Summer's 70's hits a bit more, only because I discovered something more about Donna Summer's music. Donna Summer herself, is nothing really extraordinary. She's a vocalist really no better than Whitney Houston or even Mariah Carey. She can only wish she was as talented as Shirley Bassey, Madonna, Celine Dion, or even Chaya Pitcher (Christian vocalist). Cyndi Lauper, Nancy Sinatra, and Brenda Lee are my personal favorites.

What made Donna Summer great was the music behind her, the work of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. This really came to light when I finally heard the album version of "Love To Love You Baby", and then I heard a nearly 16 minute, 12" version of "I Feel Love". Giorgio Moroder's music is what really matters here. Donna was only a voice over the music. Any female could have been chosen to sing over Giorgio Moroder's music, and the impact would have been the same.

This live show of Donna Summer was okay. I mean, Donna is still beautiful although I loved her wilder shows she did in her youth, and then she discovered God, and changed her ways as if she feels that she should apologize for her past performances. When Donna talks on stage today, she seems to have all the charm of any know-it-all Detroit Postal mail carrier. She sounds like she still has that "living in the streets" persona. She doesn't sound as classy as she looked. In fact, she almost sounds like Oprah.

In this show, she was introducing all the musicians that she was performing with. That was rather unnecessary. It only made it more obvious to everyone that Giorgio Moroder wasn't there. She never even mentioned Giorgio Moroder as being any kind of impact on her success, which is almost disrespectful. Donna Summer would have been nothing without him.

Check out some of the works of Giorgio Moroder. He was creating some intense trance dance music even in the 1970's. "Love To Love You Baby" on Donna's first album, is almost 17 minutes long. It should have stopped at 13:03 because it really did end quite nicely right there. The remaining nearly 4 minutes really is only a repeat of the beginning of the song that eventually fades out. It's actually annoying that the song does that, but I believe that was done only to make Side Two of her album equal in length to her Side One. It was just extended as filler. But anyway, listen to the main 13 minutes of that song. Giorgio Moroder was quite the innovator of a new sound that is still considered "cutting edge", even today.

In 1982, I found a 12" single of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". This is a Giorgio Moroder "tour de force" on electronics and trance music. I don't know of any CD that has this 16-minute version but it is one of the greatest examples of Giorgio Moroder giving his all. I've had this 12" single for nearly 25 years now. It's in my attic, somewhere. I've recorded it onto Reel-to-Reel tape back in the 1980's when I had a record player. I hope it'll be on CD someday.

Plus, I believe Giorgio Moroder did all the remixing of Donna's Summer's 1979 album "On The Radio - Greatest Hits - Volumes I & II." The way he made everything gel together was great. Giorgio Moroder continued to prove his predominate role in Donna Summer's career.

And also, Giorgio Moroder does have a dark side, away from disco and trance. He's done some movie soundtracks. His best dark albums are "Midnight Express", and "Cat People". He's also done the music for "Flashdance", "American Gigolo", "Scarface", "Electric Dreams", "The Never Ending Story", "Top Gun", and probably others. Giorgio Moroder also launched the career of Irene Cara, but she didn't go the distance that Donna Summer did.

Donna Summer continued to release hit singles throughout the 1980's without Giorgio Moroder. Would she really have gone anywhere if her name weren't already known? I mean, in the 1970's they called her the "Queen of Disco". But, she was only a voice to the Disco. Any female vocalist would have been called the "Queen of Disco", if Giorgio Moroder was the music behind her. Now Donna Summer has become, more or less, a small venue coffee house performer. I guess that was bound to happen considering 25 years ago were her prime success years.

The music of Matchbox Twenty--or, more accurately, singer-songwriter Rob Thomas and his backup band--is spotlighted in this 10-song, hour-long Storytellers entry, recorded in New York in February 2001. Does a band whose entire oeuvre at the time consisted of just two albums deserve the same relatively prestigious showcase previously granted to the likes of David Bowie, the Pretenders, and Elvis Costello? That's certainly debatable; then again, perhaps this is what you get for appearing on a gazillion-seller like Carlos Santana's Supernatural, as Thomas did. In any event, Thomas is a personable, garrulous fellow with a distinctive voice (familiar to all from Santana's "Smooth") and some pretty good tunes ("Push," "If You're Gone"). And make no mistake about it: this is his show, as the other musicians (including a horn section on several numbers) barely get a word in edgewise. DVD bonus features include a music-only option and one additional song. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Way awesome.......2006-11-20

I have loved these guys since their Tabitha's Secret days. Honestly Rob Thomas just grows with his music. I loved the intimacy of the VH1 Storytellers so much. Its like your in the room with them. The songs are crisp and clear. As a Matchbox Twenty Fan you really need to own this.

5 out of 5 stars Rob thomas, the Elton John/Billy Joel of our generation..........2006-11-15

This is the earliest performance I remember watching of Matchbox 20 and I was mildly interested at the time, but AC music wasn't the coolest to listen to, so I just enjoyed it in passing. VH1 was playing it a lot back then!
Fast forward a few years, MB20 are the hidden tracks on your fave AC radio station and worth listening to. So last year I snatched up this DVD and it became such a warmer and better performance. Watching it now, Rob's humor and self-depracation shine thru ;) and make for interesting tales and narration. It's interesting to see such a happy guy describing his angst-filled life influences for his generally maudlin tracks. If you don't wanna know why he wrote these songs, this isn't the DVD for you. Rob and the gang are fun, but this shows the heart of their sound. If you're a matchbox 20 fan or a Rob Thomas fan, pick this up. If not, this probably won't change your mind, but you might watch it more than once...
If for no other reason, buy this just for the jazzy version of Crutch. Tooooooooo awesome :)

5 out of 5 stars It's called Storytellers for a reason!.......2005-01-26

It's called Storytellers for a reason! This DVD is Matchbox Twenty and specifically Rob Thomas telling the stories behind some of their greatest hits up through their Mad Season album. This is a wonderful music DVD plus you get the added benefit of hearing the inside stories on some of your favorite songs. And Rob Thomas is just so endearing and cool. You just can't help loving this band. The highlights for me were Push and Rest Stop. And a cover of Lonely Weekend and a country version of Push are great fun. I highly recommend it.

Rod sang well, the slow songs were excellent. but the band was worthless.

and Rod had to get in his bisexual comments, he never does seem to work to dispeel the talk that has gone on for decades. Sample, he says the word sin then looks at his guitar players pants and goes those are sinful, while staring at them, oh thats means nothing? they do on a man that has been so called dogged for being a bi all these years, and then the best one was when while he was singing turned the mic backwards and acted like he was buffing it with his mouth, it goes real fast, watch.

not that there is anything wrong with that, a la Jerry Seinfeld, but doing that on tv and knowing its going to be on dvd, no man, no.

3 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Feel Sorry for a Rock Star, but..........2006-09-21

With all the glitz, glamor, and fame (not to mention the mega-bucks) that go with being a rock star of Rod Stewart's standing, it's very hard to feel sorry for someone like him, but this DVD did it for me. Backed by a band one step up from the garage level, Rod kills himself trying to engage his audience, but with a very few exceptions, they just aren't there for him. It's sure not Rod's fault; he turns in a great performance all around and even has the grace to seem a bit jealous of the guy who helps him out on "Ooh La La", but, for the most part, all the audience returns is polite applause. This is no reason not to buy the DVD, the little heard songs make it worth it, but if you have any of the later DVDs you will be even more appreciative of Janna Jacoby, Chuck Kentis, Don Kirkpatrick, Jeff Golub, Katja Rieckermann, and Natasha Pearce.

5 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet.......2005-04-03

While I tend watch his more recent "It Had To Be You...The Great American Songbook" and "One Night Only! Live At The Royal Albert Hall" dvds more often, "VH1 Storytellers" captures Rod Stewart in a more intimate environment, allowing us to see a more relaxed and looser Stewart not seen on the other two.

Though the VH1 show "Storytllers" was supposed to showcase artists performing some of their classic hits in a small club and telling the stories on how some of their best known songs, Rod never really does that except when an audience member asks him who "Maggie May" is about. Other than that, he gives brief facts on certain songs but never divulges their true inspiration. This, however, should not dull the experience. With or without the actual storytelling, Rod nonetheless gives excellent performances of classics like "Maggie May", "Tonight's The Night", "Stay With Me", "Ooh La La" (sung with an audience member), "Forever Young", "You're In My Heart" and "Having A Party". Also, Rod performs two songs, "Cigarettes And Alcohol" and "Rocks", from his 1998 covers album "When We Were The New Boys", an underrated gem (or so I'm told, I've never actually heard it).

There are two bonus performances included that were not it in the television broadcast. They are "Hot Legs" and "Have I Told You Lately". They are good but not as good the originals.

Overall, a great Stewart live dvd. Pick up this dvd and the two I mentioned before as well, and you will experience how it feels to be at a Rod Stewart concert.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!.......2005-01-31

Wonderful concert. Shows why he is so popular. Didn't last long enough, left you smiling and wanting more! One you will watch over and over, at least I will.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rod.......2004-09-18

This was recorded right before the release of Rod's underrated 1998 release, When We Were the New Boys. The tour that followed was his last before his throat surgery, and the last before he split with his wife Rachel Hunter. The result is a terrific performance from a man with charisma, style and of course, that voice. Don't expect much in the way of info about the songs though, Rod has never been able to talk about his lyrics so it's just Rod sharing a few drinks and tunes with his audience. He also had a fantastic backing band on this tour as well. After listening to him do just passable versions of classic standards for the past two years, this concert reminds you what Rod Stewart should still be doing. It's also reasonably priced. A happy occasion for all......Pass on his standards CDs and buy this DVD OR the Faces terrific new box set, "Five Guys Walk Into a Bar."

Description

Natalie Merchant got her start at age 17 as the lead singer of the folk-pop outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Her silken voice and outspoken social awareness wooed music fans and cemented her status as one of the day's most astute and captivating artists. Though 10,000 Maniacs achieved a level of critical success as a major-label act in the mid-80's, Merchant decided to go it alone in 1994. Since then her popularity has bloomed in the wake of Tigerlily, Ophelia, Motherland, Live in Concert: Natalie Merchant and The House Carpenter's Daughter. Featured here are the hits in an intimate, one-of-a-kind setting.

5 out of 5 stars Storytellers.......2005-07-05

5 out of 5 stars Haven't seen it yet :(.......2005-06-10

I've seen her live 4 times, so I know it's good. Can't wait to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to see this!!.......2005-06-01

Natalie's albums are masterpieces. You can really get into her music by listening to them. BUT, to get the FULL experience, you MUST see her perform live!!

I have seen her in concert a dozen or so times, and she has made me laugh, cry, and wisked me away to a place of pure peace and contentment with the beauty of her voice, and the emotion she conveys. When she sings live, her stage presence is POWERFUL. She mesmorizes me. This DVD is another opportunity to see the BEST----Mrs. Natalie Merchant. Don't miss it. You get to hear her tell the story behind each song. Her performance of "Verdi Cries" is particularly beautiful.

No one can sing like her, and no one can move me the way she does.

5 out of 5 stars Innocence lost, strength, Short and Sweet! .......2005-05-25

If you have had the privilege of witnessing a Natalie Merchant show live, you understand the energy that the woman conveys in her performances. It is difficult to capture Natalie perfect in any recording capacity. There are many bootleg video performances of Ms Merchant floating around with appalling quality that are being gobbled up by her loyal followers. Storytellers is filmed in an intimate setting with top notch quality. Her voice is at the best of it's game here and her warmth and caring are conveyed. She somehow breaks the third wall and transcends the screen when she starts to inform how/why "What's The Matter Here" was written. Next, the audience glimpses a lighter side as Natalie explains "Kind and Generous". N'Dea Davenport appears as a special guest and joins Natalie and her band to sing "Break Your Heart".

For the longer fans of Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs, the "whirling dervish" is not apparent, she has grown and takes us on this odyssey with her. Some might fault her for not playing a particular 10KM song, but lets face it, this was just a one hour show and it is NATALIE MERCHANT STORYTELLERS, aka VH1's version of UnPlugged. There is no fault that she excluded some of the better known 10KM songs, the three she DOES perform are the ones she often does so when she is live in concert. If you would like to see a more "energetic" Natalie flying around the stage, I recommend the dvd "Natalie Merchant Live in Concert". In that one she kicks off her shoes and just tears into the stage, classic Natalie style. In Storytellers, unlike her live in concert video, you get to SEE her perform "Life Is Sweet". This in itself is a treat. So if you are a Natalie fan and are thinking "I taped the broadcast when it aired", you have not seen Life is Sweet, I urge you to buy the dvd. It is one of the most beautiful renditions of the song I have ever seen. (and I have seen her quite a few times live, mind you)

Natalie has grown as an artist and as an individual beautifully. After many years in the industry she has proven that she has staying power. Natalie stays true to her roots in this performance. This video is one you can watch with the entire family, no one blushes and the only dialogue that may get started will be positive, I assure you.

If for no other reason, chances are you will learn a new word, "didactic" That alone is worth the price of the disc. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Good setlist; 60 minutes isn't enough.......2005-04-28

to see Natalie Merchant perform live in an intimate setting. Too bad the version of "carnival" doesn't show natalie dancing wildly like she normally does in all her concerts - great version of "wonder" and a move-to-tears version of "verdi cries"

natalie is truly a goddess - if you like her solo stuff and 10k stuff, buy this memorable dvd

not enough to give 5 stars because it was aired before her 2001 album, "Motherland" - her best album by far.
