Jim Jarmusch's low-tech tribute to the 30-year-old collaboration between grunge godfather Neil Young and his favorite garage band, Crazy Horse, is both a quirky little movie and a monument to one of rock & roll's greatest noisemakers. Partially culled from some gritty archival material shot in 1976 and 1986, and supplemented by lots of super-8 footage of Young and Crazy Horse between shows while on a concert tour (the concert footage itself appears to be shot on 16mm), Year of the Horse is very much like one of the band's paradoxical performances: epic but transitory, ragged but direct, focused but improvisational. Jarmusch understands Crazy Horse and its quixotic musical quest too well to embalm them in a conventional profile-and-performance "rockumentary." Instead, he honors the off-and-on marriage of Young and the others by treating the various chapters of their lives together as shadows in time, fleeting glimpses of a brotherhood that has no secrets.
Jarmusch devotes some time to the ghosts in this film--Danny Whitten, Crazy Horse's original guitarist, and the band's late manager--then disperses them with eerie, soundless footage of black-and-white shapes that flutter off into their own void. It's the same poetic dance of light and shadow that caught Jarmusch's fancy in Stranger Than Paradise and Dead Man, but here--as with Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their musical best--it is pure in its essence, nonliteral, pouring in from some fount of raw discovery and inspiration. Exciting stuff, as are performances of band workhorses such as "Sedan Delivery" and the gorgeous "Like a Hurricane." --Tom Keogh

As for the "documentary" side of things, the interviews between the songs tend to quickly become dull. Fans will learn nothing new, and casual viewers may be confused as to who these people are that are being referred to. The guitarist Poncho states snidely (and I am paraphrasing here), "You think you can learn everything about this band from this short documentary?" Then the camera cuts away leaving the viewer with nothing at all. Later in the film, he says almost the exact same line to the camera, perhaps forgetting that he said it before. The answer clearly is, "No, I won't learn very much at all from this documentary."
A saving grace for the video comes in a few short clips of documentary footage from the '70's and '80's. These clips show the band sometimes unaware of the camera, sometimes hamming it up. They're a great depiction of Neil Young and his band in their prime. They also represent everything a documentary film should be. Sadly, there are too few of these moments in this film.
The director does manage to sneak himself into the picture several times, along with the name of his production company (I think they're even in the trailer.) This should make it easier to avoid his documentaries in the future.
Buy the DVD "Rust Never Sleeps" if you want a concert movie, or buy the album "Year of the Horse" to get the music from this film instead.

Two live performances, one from 1988 and one from 1990, are included on this single disc, a potential boon for Sinead O'Connor fans but perhaps a mixed blessing for the uninitiated. The earlier of the two gigs, the 37-minute The Value of Ignorance, is not the Irish singer's finest moment; there are no shots of audience or band (primarily close ups of Sinead and her shaved head, all "enhanced" by amateurish and distracting visual effects added in post-production), and the music is no great shakes either, what with O'Connor's unpleasant wailing and a sludgy instrumental mix. Fortunately, The Year of the Horse is not only about twice as long but twice as good in virtually every sense: better sound and visuals, better songs, and a much better performance (the tunes performed in both shows, like "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" and "Jerusalem," bear witness to that). The Year of the Horse shows how much an artist can improve in two years, especially with a hit like "Nothing Compares 2 U" under her belt. A good thing, too, or O'Connor's recently announced retirement might have been forced on her a long time ago. --Sam GrahamDescription

The Year of the Horse.......2004-02-21
When the show starts of with 'feel so different' and she is standing there, radiating with dignity, wearing a long coat and glasses, she delivers an amazing, and yet very simple song with only strings. 'nothing compares 2u' is another major highlight, the way that she changes from aggression to despair so frequently during that performance grabs the viewer and yanks them in and out her turmoil. Not to mention that it's also a beautiful song. The only thing that would have made this show better is if she incorporated the strings and drum when she does 'troy', which i think is her single, most amazing track, the original version, which was given new life in 2002 by DJ's. But she does it only accoustically, which I believe takes away its original power.
That new DVD, "goodnight, thank you . . ."is alright, one of Sinead's more average outings, but "the year of the horse" is an example of Sinead O'Connor that shows that she has put out a lot of average work, but when she is good, she is better than everyone else out there. There is no one like her. Stunning.

The Year of the Horse is definetly has more money behind it. Though still simple with the songs only being accented by lighting & camera editing. Sinead is still so pure, but you see the growth. Here you see everything from the band to a dancing Sinead. Incredibly saturated in nuiance. I love this show. I think nothing is more beautiful than how she brings all of these thousands of people together by her music...the entire audience sings along during some songs, & Sinead just smiles. I would too, I mean it's such a reality check to see what you've done & how you've affected others when the whole world sings with you. Chilling, & spiritual. I love this woman.

Schooling A Horse 2: Basic Training in the First Year Rudolf Zeilinger DVD
Manufacturer: TV Produktion, Thomas Vogel ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD ASIN: B000K2OOMI |
Product Description
Part 2: Basic Training in the First Year using a variety of four year old horses. Rudolf Zeilinger demonstrates the continuation of early training introduced in part 1 and shows work to develop impulsion, straightening and collection. The benefits of having established the principles of early training are evident in the way the horses accept the demands of more difficult exercises, whilst maintaining their motivation and enjoyment of the work. Also included is the introduction to work in the outdoor school with other horses, and a young horse's first experience of a competition. "... to avoid any restriction on a horse's natural harmony and grace, but rather to encourage its suppleness and sheer pleasure in its own movements" is the ultimate aim of Rudolf Zeilinger - one of the most talented pupils of the late Willi Schultheis, and himself a trainer of Olympic and World Championship horses. Rudolf Zeilinger is well-known for the gentle and sensitive way he trans dressage horses, encouraging them to develop a relaxed, confident and athletic way of going, combined with a happy forward thinking attitude to their work.DVD:
