Great music, bad editing.......2006-07-08
I love Winston's music. Every song on here is great, and the performances are fantastic. So if those are your only criteria, stop reading and place your order.
However, I wish the team that produced this video had done a better job editing it. Placing George's comments DURING the songs was a horrible idea, and I can see how the nature images (which I personally love) can interrupt one's enjoyment of the performance. The makers of the DVD should have give the viewer three choices: straight concert footage, concert footage with Winston's commentary, and concert audio with nature footage. That way, no matter what experience you wanted, you could get it.
Short of excellent........2004-11-23
I have seen play Mr.Winston live in Mexico City and in Barcelona, he is definitely a gifted man. His music is beautiful and really inspired BUT BUT BUT!!! he talks in the middle of the piece! understand that when you are lying down relaxing hearing and seeing this wonderful images the last thing you want is an explanation of what we see and hear I WANT TO SIMPLY ENJOY THE MOMENT!!!. Also take note that Mr. Winston loves to play the Hawaian guitar and even though he does it ok I prefer the piano 1000000 to 1. Just remember Michael when he tought he could play baseball, remember?. The video is worth seeing, but it is definitely not worth more than 3 stars. Enjoy!
He talks over the music.......2003-11-05
He talks over the music. Do they try to make people buy a CD or should people download to compensate for the loss? When he was talking, it also made me realize that his music is probably pretty boring so the talking is somewhat compensating.
Great music, but several annoyances.......2002-10-09
A must see for all George Winston fans. The music is great, and it's really interesting to see George Winston in action: his rather unorthodox style (stiff, fully extended fingers), some of the techniques he uses (e.g. putting his hands over the wires to create muffled sound), and his surprisingly good guitar performances. There are a few things about this DVD that I found really annoying, however.
1. Commentaries that takes places *during* the performances. What's up with that? The music should not have been interrupted.
2. Really cheesy landscape shots during the performances. I'd preferred to see just George and his piano.
3. I absolutely hated the new rendition of The Cradle. Ugh. The "new" Thanksgiving fared much better, however.
4. He doesn't play Colors/Dance -- arguably his best song.
This is a great DVD.......2002-09-19
If you enjoy great scenery, great music, and desire to be moved emotionally, pick up this DVD. I have watched it again and again, and it never gets old. GW mixes some of his stuff with some slack key, and the result is wonderful. I always enjoyed the part where he gets to play with the late Chet Atkins, and those two are just amazing musicians. GW has been a long time admirer of Chet, and you can really see the excitement in George's face when he gets to play with Chet. It is a wonderfully genuine DVD, and it is also a great way to "see" GW in concert without going (especially if you can't get to a city where he is live). I highly recommend this DVD to both GW fans and piano fans alike. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Not exactly live in front of an audience.......2006-05-12
I have no issues with the performances here, only that it appears that the entire show was recorded in a studio. There are moments afterward where Cameras pan to Red Rocks, but very misleading. I know Ackerman liked to control things a bit especially when Windham Hill was a young production company, and to his credit was very well done. I would rather have seen a blemished real-time performance without the studio closeups and studio type lighting. Hedges was great. It was astounding to me to hear how good a recorded acoustic guitar can sound and this was a trademark of Windham Hill in the beginning. Ackerman has since sold his rights to Windham Hill, and now the label is soaked in obscurity. It's only meaningful periods are the early 80's till about mid 1990's when Quality was still controlled.
So the editing is weird...Michael Hedges ROCKS!.......2005-01-05
I grant you, the switching back and forth between the intimate venue and the Red Rocks applause is bizarre...but you know, there's one thing that makes the whole DVD more than worthwhile. That's Michael, having a great time performing.
If you're a fan, you absolutely cannot miss this. If you're a guitarist or musician of any kind, do yourself a *tremendous* favor - stop everything you're doing for a few minutes and watch the performance of "Woman of the World." You will be inspired beyond belief. This is the kind of engagement with the music that I think we all seek - to move with it, to let our voices tremble in just the right spot...to create our own little world of sound and motion, and to let the audience join us there.
Don't let yourself miss out on this one. If you feel have to put it on your Wish List until your next paycheck, fine...but don't let it sit there! This is one purchase you will not regret!
Bought this to see Michael Hedges.......2004-09-21
This is obviously a studio recording that switches to applause from a live audience at the end of each song, which is strange and depressing. This is proof that there exists additional video from many live Michael Hedges concerts. Hedges has been gone for 7 years and not much else has been released. Jimi Hendrix fans had to wait 30 years before legal battles were won by the Hendrix family and we began to finally see new releases. Must all Hedges fans endure the same fate? A CD or DVD with even one Hedges song on it is worth owning, so this DVD is a must have. Windham Hill, please open your vaults and stop hoarding this material! If you created a CD or DVD for every Hedges concert you have, I'd buy them all.
Bizarre DVD.......2004-02-17
This is the strangest DVD. It features some nicely recorded (in stereo) performances before a live audience in a small studio. At the very end of each song though, the scene shifts to the same performer finishing the same song at a live concert at Red Rocks, CO! The crowd is seated differently, the lighting is different and the performers even have different hair styles! I'm not sure who they are trying to fool here. The performances are very good but the photography is mediocre at best. The sound is just stereo. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.
He lives on..........2003-10-30
This DVD would be worth buying if all it had was the Michael Hedges performances. However, the other artists turn out unique and delightful music. Hedges steals the show, and as a guitarist, the chance to see him performing visually is priceless. Wonderful music and an amazingly helpful tool when deciphering Hedges' complex creations.
