Explosive performances by Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, Santana, the Staple Singers, and others power Soul to Soul, the filmed documentary of a 1971 concert by American artists in Accra, Ghana. There's some great music here, with versions of "Land of 1000 Dances" (Pickett), "When Will We Be Paid" (the Staples), and "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" (jazzmen Les McCann and Eddie Harris, who also feature the amazing African musician Amoah Azangeo) that are as good or better than anything found on other concert films from the period, including Wattstax and Woodstock. But witnessing this predominantly black group of Americans as they respond to being in Africa for the first time is fascinating and moving as well (check out the uncontained emotion of Ike Turner, just one of the nine folks who supplied voice-over commentary for the DVD, to see just how profound an experience it was), to say nothing of the sometimes bemused, often ecstatic response of the African audience. 5.1 surround notwithstanding, the sound can be a little dodgy, but the remastered, restored film, which includes plenty of non-concert documentary footage (including a trip to a seaside "castle" from which slaves were shipped across the Atlantic) looks good, and what's on the film looks first rate. --Sam Graham
Description
On March 6, 1971, some of the greatest artists in popular music history traveled from the United States to Ghana, West Africa, to take part in a 14-hour musical celebration, Soul To Soul. Over 100,000 enthusiastic locals gathered for this unique cultural exchange between two continents. This award-winning film combines classic concert performances with scenes documenting the artists getting in touch with their roots as they return to the cultural motherland. SOUL TO SOUL chronicles this historic event and is considered by many to be one of the greatest music films of all time. Now available for the first time on DVD, this 2-disc set features the 95-minute, full-length feature film, newly remastered and restored from the original 35mm negative by the Grammy Foundation. The second disc features a remastered and expanded original soundtrack (also making its debut on CD), including performances not featured in the film.

The miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream begins in the 1940s, when Joseph Jackson (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) and Katherine (Angela Bassett) meet and fall in love, and ends in the 1980s, when their sons reunite for the 1983 Victory Tour that brought them back together as the Jacksons. During the first part, "The Early Years," the couple starts a family, and although times are tough, Joseph still finds time to play music on the side. When he discovers that his sons have inherited the same talent, the Jackson 5 are born. They sign with Motown and start churning out the gold records. The second part, "The Success Years," begins in 1970 at the peak of their fame, but by 1976, the hits have started to dry up. If the acting is uneven and the story somewhat sanitized, Bassett is affecting, and the series includes Emmy-winning choreography and a combination of original and re-created material, ranging from "I Want You Back" (1969) to Michael Jackson's "Beat It" (from 1982's multi-platinum Thriller). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This movie is so long, but it is so entertaining!! The acting is great and so is the music. Even if you don't like Michael Jackson, this movie will still entertain you

4 out of 5 stars Hilton-Jacobs steals the movie.......2007-04-29

Very good mini series/movie. Lawrence Hilton Jacobs as Joe Jackson was very underrated , his role as Joe Jackson rivals Laraunce Fishburns as Ike Turner. I think it is funny that years later Angela Basset who plays the mother in this movie plays Tina Turner with Fishburn. I wonder how she compares the 2 performances. If this was a wide release movie and not a tv mini series Hilton-Jacobs would of been nominated for a Oscar.

Basset is just ok in this movie. She is completely overwhelmed by Hilton-Jacobs and the people who play Micheal. And she is really a annoying character. She sits around and cries when her husband is abusing the kids. I am sure if she had left this man years earlier the chldren would of not had been as mess up as they are. Being that Jermaine co writes this movie it is a interesting portrait he paints of his mother. Who is a sympathetic character but at the same time a weak mother. Katherine only leaves when she over hears Joe and his girlfriend on the phone, but she stayed when he was beating and abusing the kids. You hear her yelling at Joe every once in a while but she does. It was a interesting scene when she is on the phone with Joe again mad at something and you look around the dinner table and fans are sitting there eatng dinner with the mother and the other kids. Very weird.
Margret Avery who plays her mother looks more like her sister, then her mother particulary when Katherine is a adult with children.
Another intersting point about Jermaine writing this is the way he portrays his relationship to Hazel Gordy. We all knew at the time it had nothing to do with love and she was considered a very plain looking woman. It was a joke and a very opportunistic move on his part. But in this movie you would of thought this was Romeo and Juliet romance. I have to respect that Jermaine did not tear her down. Good for him.

The various performers playing the Jacksons through the years were very good but none had much to do except the the actors who played Michael who were very good. The one who played him as a adult was spot on, it was very tragic that he died soon after the movie was made. To me the one who played the second to last Michael really looked and moved like him when he was on the stage. Remember this movie is suppose to be about the original Jacksons, the ones in the hall of fame, the ones that blew the socks off of everyone when they first came on the scene, not Janet, who I thnk Michael sings for, I swear.

I like the way they touch on the various rivals of the Jackson Five like the Osmonds. There a few of them like the Sylvers. None of these rivals came close to Michael. The had a few hits but that was about it.

I remember Michael when he first came on the scene. We are the same age. There has never been anyone who was like him as a child and teenage performer. And no one since. Even now I am amazed when I see him in old footage and hear his voice. I cry looking at them because of how sad it is to see how he has fallen in the last 15 years. Prince and him are the same age look at Prince now and look at Michael. A sad story. This movie will show you when he was in his prime and it does a good job of it.

It is and was a classic movie. The product was in great condition and got to the addressee in a timely manner. I will definitely consider Amazon first when ordering online.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well acted family bio.......2007-02-09

Joe Jackson had dreams as a young man. He wanted to be a boxer and musician and go to California. But he got his girlfriend, Katherine, pregnant and he did the honorable thing--he married her. He tabled his dreams for his family, working in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, to put foood on the table. A religious and principled man (the Jacksons were Jehovah Witnesses), he took family seriously and since he didn't believe in birth control or abortion, he had a lot of kids--9 altogether. On occasion he was brutal--but if any of you are parents, can you imagine how brutal you might get having 10 people depending on you?

Gossip and badmouthing from the kids paint Joe Jackson as a tyrant--and he may have some very large flaws--but one thing is very clear: he never abandoned his family. He transformed his dreams to fit the talent of his children and took all of them out of a probable bleak destiny in Gary to the height of world recognition. I'm amazed by that, frankly.

This movie is definitely worth watching for many reasons. Though poor, this was a close knit family smothered in love and support by both parents. Angela Bassett is touching as usual, all mothery and love, but able to stand up to Joe when he gets a little too tough with the boys. Her children are still devoted to her. Lawrence Tillman as Joe Jackson gives a multi-dimensioned father. Proud of his children, a stern taskmaster, a visionary--as much a visionary as Berry Gordy--a family man who is complex and flawed. I loved the scene at the Apollo where he embraces Michael and gets off to his children performing Twist and Shout. We also see the music business during the Motown Age and the inner workings of Berry Gordy's Motown at the height of its success. Now Billy Dee Williams gives Gordy way too much sex appeal...but I enjoyed the charm anyway.

The boy who played preteen Michael was simply adorable and highly talented as singer and dancer. His singing of Kansas City and Twist and Shout in the first half had me moving. The second half, when the family is breaking up as Michael's star ascends was somewhat painful. The father loses control over his creation, Hollywood values destroy family unity, Katherine suffers from empty nest. But what an achievement.

I loved the fact that this is 4 hours long--it's like a good book you don't want to end. No doubt this story will be retold in fuller detail, but I suspect that story would take 8 hours. I'm looking forward to it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value.......2007-02-18

Ronnie knows the blues and knows how to teach it. He breaks it down into manageable building blocks. Ronnie doesn't need a band - just his foot and a guitar. He seamlessly switches from playing rhythm to fills and back while keeping the groove. This is one of the gems in the Hot Licks series.

5 out of 5 stars I'd trade in all my blues instructional videos for this gem.......2006-12-10

I sure do thank you, Mr. Earl. No where else have I found such tasty chord-playing advice coupled with complimentary lessons in blues guitar history. You keep it simple, yet you play with so much soul. If only I'd bought this video back in 1993, when it was first released on VHS.

I may have the "missed opportunity blues," but at least I have this great DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent lessons in electric blues guitar.......2006-06-17

This is an interesting DVD featuring bluesman Ronnie Earl as the instructor. There are multiple simultaneous views of Earl while he demonstrates what he is doing (including a shot of his intense facial expressions). The first part of the tape focuses on substitute chord voicings that Earl uses to make the changes interesting (6 chords, 9 chords, 13 chords, etc). The second part of the tape covers his style of soloing. The main point that Earl makes (and it is the way he learned to solo) is not to worry about copying solos note for note, but to get the feel of the solo. He advises playing along with such greats as Magic Sam and Otis Rush. As another reviewer wrote, Earl uses a minimum of notes to achieve a maximum of expression and urges the student to do the same.

This is not a beginner's video. If you have developed the feel for blues changes (eg, 12 bar blues), know your pentatonic scales, and want to add finesse to your blues, Earl is definitely an excellent player deserving your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar with Soul ("Hot Licks Series").......2006-06-04

I've purchased several titles from the "Hot Licks" series and think they are all good, but this Ronnie Earl DVD is a wonder. I have spent so much time with this DVD and it has added greatly to my playing. I'm probably not a typical player: self-taught from age of 13 -20, then strumming every six months or so for about the next 40 years. Started seriously studying with a good teacher two years ago and while I've made great progress with my teacher, I sometimes get discouraged. This DVD gave me such a boost: It added nuance to my improvisation and contributed a great deal of color to my chord vocabulary. I've already spent hours with it and there's enough meat here to keep me going with it for weeks to come. Ronnie Earl is an amazing guitarist and his instruction style is genuine and earnest. I highly recommend this title.

5 out of 5 stars Blues Power.......2006-04-15

Ronnie Earl Is One Hell Of A Guitar Player. The Most Important Thing About His Lessons Is That He Lays It Out In Such A Way That You Will Really Get It. I Truely Believe That This Dvd Will Inspire You To Reach Within Yourself And Play Better Better Than You Ever Had. This Will Be One Of The Most Important DVD'S You Have Ever Picked Up!

One of the hugest soul-funk groups of the last half of the 1970s, Earth Wind & Fire created a lush, trademark sound that reveals its infectious nature in this documentary look at the group's 30-year history. Founded by Maurice White in the early 1970s, EWF broke out in mid-decade with its That's the Way of the World album. The documentary offers footage and reminiscences from the band, about its origins (White had been a Chicago session musician), its breakthrough and subsequent run as America's biggest soul band--and White's eventual burnout that led to putting the band on hiatus through much of the 1980s. It all has the homogenized sound of an authorized biography (no Behind the Music revelations here), but it gains energy every time a vintage musical performance takes center stage. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars The Best You Will Find on EW&F.......2007-05-14

Maurice White's genius comes through on this DVD. The most comprehensive look at the beginnings of Whites dream - which of course turned into the incomparable Earth Wind & Fire. From his beginnings with the Ramsey Lewis trio through forming what is probably the greatest R&B group of all time bar none. The cast White put together to form the band brought together some of the greatest vocalists and musicians, re: Philip Bailey, Al McKay, Verdine White etc ever assembled in one band - the story is amazing an interesting. If you are a Earth Wind and Fire fan - the story along with old footage of performances is a bout as comprehensive as you are going to get.

5 out of 5 stars The Best band in the world........2007-01-11

This is a wonderful look into the group's history and Maurice White's vision. It felt like it should have been longer. The old concert footage was great! Man, they used to tear it up on stage. No real discussion was done about the period during the band's breakup after Electric Universe, the solo ventures and the comeback record 'Touch The World' was not even mentioned, even in the album review section of the DVD. Nor was the '90s releases discussed. But still in all this is a wonderful story of a positive spiritual Afro-centric band that broke all barriers in the '70s. No band ever came close, except for Parliament/Funkadelic or maybe Pink Floyd, and no other band has touched the realm of professionalism and discipline since. Maurice & EWF have secured a beautiful legacy for all bands to pattern themselves after. It is interesting that they really don't recieve the recognition they should outside of their fan base. This music will live forever.

    4 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Look Inside A Musical Dynasty!!.......2005-11-16

The thing that I like about this DVD is that it's
straight from the people who made the legend come to life!
Maurice, Verdine, Phillip, Larry, Al, Johnny,
Fred, Ralph, Andrew and the surviving members of
the Phoenix Horns all have their say and cover
their miraculous career / journey in somewhat
intimate detail. There are home movies of the band on tour
during their hey-day, backstage footage, etc.
as well as some well-placed snipets of the music itself.
E,W & F, to me, will always be the baddest band of all time!
Those classic albums from 1973's "Head To The Sky" to 1981's
"Raise" are etched into my DNA and still provide joy
and inspiration! A worthwhile addition to your DVD collection
if your are into documentaries of the great artists who shaped
their times and future times to come!

    5 out of 5 stars A Success Story.......2005-08-09

Lots of great background info on one of my favorite groups. I though the first 10 minutes or so dragged, however, it picked up speed and became very intriguing soon after that. Lots of great clips - I learned stuff I never knew before about the group. worth ordering.

5 out of 5 stars Very indepth and Entertaining.......2005-08-01

I bought this DVD when it was first released and I must tell you that it is very indept and entertaining. It even has footage of Maurice playing drums with Ramsey Lewis. And very early shots of the original bands first performance. A must have for any EWF fan.

A love having DVD video collections of my favorite artist. I have some great ones from Britney, Madonna, and Mariah. Now I can add Janet to that list. She has some really great videos. Though there are some misses on this dvd collection. This dvd has videos from her four albums of the 90s to 00s; Janet, Velvet Rope, All For You, and Damita Jo. Though there are some great videos that showcase her dancing ("if", "All Nite(Don't Stop")her looks ("Everytime") they all have something special, sort of. I think it was a HUGE mistake to put the so-so def remix of "Someone To Call My Lover" and not the original mix. I also prefer the P.Diddy remix of "Son Of A Gun", but that is still a great video. Two videos that dont deserve the space here is the "You" video which is basically a concert video (I hate those) and the "Becuase of Love" video which is horribly dated and cheesy, also somewhat of a concert video. But of course the great moments outnumber the bad, the beauty of "everytime" the sexiness of "All Nite" the Coolness of "If" the sweetness of "again" and more.

    Highlights:
    Son Of A Gun
    Every Time
    I Get Lonely
    If
    Thats The Way Love Goes
    All For You
All Nite(Dont Stop)( its so scandalous)

Paul Robeson is today known for little more than singing "Ol' Man River" in Showboat, but this hefty and potent collection from Criterion (seven movies and a rich trove of documentary features and commentaries) should return Robeson to much-deserved cultural awareness. An imposing, charismatic black actor who demanded respect when most black actors were trapped in mammy and minstrel roles, and a singer whose deep, rolling voice won him acclaim on the concert stages of Europe, Robeson was among the most significant performers of the 20th Century--until the 1950s, when the U.S. government suspended his passport out of fear that Robeson's commitment to social progress and civil rights would project a negative view of America. But even before then, Robeson's career took place outside of the establishment channels of Hollywood. Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist includes two silent films (Body and Soul, a melodrama railing against the hypocrisies of the church, made by the pioneering black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux; and Borderline, a startlingly inventive story of an interracial love rectangle, made by film theorist Kenneth Macpherson), both given additional vitality by contemporary jazz scores; three movies from Robeson's rich period in England (Sanders of the Valley, Jericho, and The Proud Valley, which chart both Robeson's rising social conscience and his increasing clout in the industry); Robeson's most significant Hollywood film, The Emperor Jones, adapted from the Eugene O'Neill play that shot Robeson to stardom in the first place; and the movie that probably reflected Robeson's social beliefs more than any, the remarkable and riveting semi-documentary Native Land, which Robeson narrated.

Robeson is one of those rare actors, like Bette Davis or Humphrey Bogart, whose performances drive his movies as much as the director or the screenplay. Much is made of Robeson's powerful voice and intimidating physique, but just as impressive are his piercing eyes; in every role, a questing intelligence bursts through, looking at the world and cutting through charades and illusions. Criterion packages always have phenomenal extras, but Portraits of the Artist is unusually complex because Robeson's life is as important to his stature as his movies. These excellent features capture the world around Robeson, a world that both raised him up and tore him down. Far from a musty historical document, this is a film package that matters, which will reward and surprise viewers used to conventional notions of Hollywood and America. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

All-American athlete, scholar, renowned baritone, stage actor, and social activist, Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was a towering figure and a trailblazer many times over. He made perhaps his biggest impact, however, in the medium of film. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson managed to become a top-billed movie star around the world during the time of Jim Crow America, always striving to use film to educate viewers about equality, democracy, and the rights of workers. Though he eventually left movies behind, using his international celebrity to speak on behalf of those denied their civil liberties and ultimately becoming a victim of ideological persecution himself, Robeson left a film legacy that continues to speak eloquently of the long and difficult journey of a courageous and outspoken African American.

    4 out of 5 stars JB - R.I.P........2007-05-20

This DVD is a documentary on James Brown, the man. Although some concert footage with poor picture quality is included, it only supports the documentary narrative about JB and his life. The DVD narrative parallels the JB autobiography: James Brown: The Godfather of Soul; Thunder's Mouth Press (ISBN 1-56025-388-6).
This DVD is a good companion to the book, but shouldn't be considered as concert material.

    1 out of 5 stars BAD PURCHASE.......2007-05-15

I TRIED TO PLAY THE DVD ON THREE DIFFERENT VIDEO SYSTEMS AND THE RESULTS ON ALL THREE WERE THE SAME. THE VIDEO PORTION WAS DISTORTED AND SKIPPED FRAMES. THE AUDIO ALSO SKIPPED. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PURCHASE.

5 out of 5 stars This is the One - Get it.......2007-02-16

This DVD is a "must have" for the true James Brown fan. It is autobiographical with great footage from the early years when JB could really dance and do his splits and microphone tricks. You get to see his beginnings, concerts, practices -- everything. The footage covers his successes and challenges and comes all the way forward to the recent past. After I saw my copy, I ordered copies for my parents and several friends who are all huge James Brown fans.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Soul Survivor.......2005-10-08

This DVD was a very pleasant surprise. I thought it would be a lot of previously seen film footage of JB performances, but the real focus was getting to know James Brown, the man. Learning his beginning and seeing all he had to overcome made his music more personal. I bought a copy for my father who grew up in Augusta at that time and he loved seeing the pool hall they all played in and he recognized other popular hang out spots. A great gift for anyone who is a true JB fan. If you love his music, you will love this DVD. It was money well spent.

3 out of 5 stars Would have liked to have seen more rare clips of the 60s 70s.......2004-11-25

I did enjoy watching James Brown rehearsing his band more than anything. I love to see how things are down behind the scenes. I got a big kick out of seeing little James Brown Jr. and appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Brown sharing that moment with them riding in the limo.

The only thing that I wish that was show me is complete performances from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Everything was presented pretty much as a sound bite.

I could tell that a lot of the past James Brown employees that were interview where holding back a lot of things.

    Thanks you,

4 out of 5 stars REAL 50 fans gonna feel this..........2006-08-10

If you a REAL 50 fan you gonna love getting the inside story from 50 and interviews in this movie with his real family and friends, not no movie production hollywood version of 50's life. you get that mix tape - from the streets style - the real. for real just getting this movie for the soundtrack was worth it you get to hear REAL G-Unit street style flows on the soundtrack and it even got ricky ruckus on it. this buy was worth my time and $$$

4 out of 5 stars pretty solid - good for the collection if u really like 50.......2006-07-16

This is a fairly solid movie. Obviously an independent - but it does reveal some new information and it is worth the money.

Now that 50 is coming out in a new movie this is a good one to ad to the collection.

    B+

5 out of 5 stars 50 loved this - the negative posts on here are personal attacks and should be ignored.......2006-06-15

All the haters need to listen here. 50 and his crew loved this dope. If any of you guys in the sticks knew about hip hop you would have noticed that the g-unit music video "My Buddy" used a very similar animation and video style. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. Both that music vid and this movie reflect the real 50 Cent style. Love it or hate it - its real and its the truth. Thats why this style is now being used in all the new 50 videos as well as Eminem in his Mosh video.

All you haters need to break out of ya Top 40 mindset and dig the independent vibe and authentic flava.

So you girls quit ya namecallin and keep dreaming that you know sumtin bout flicks...cuz you DONT.

The reality is this flick has true 50 Cent FLAVOR. Animations are in the same style as g-unit and also same style as Eminem used in the political music video MOSH. Plenty of never before seen videos with 50, his gramps, and alot of other playas. Dig it.

The soundtrack is all independent artists - which I happen to think is cool since thats the way fiddy made it - on the streets. I watched this twice cuz I like it so much. I am a successful music producer in Detroit, I having worked with Em and plenty of other rappers, and I'm telling you some of artists on this movie are about to blow up.

Overall these filmmakers made a pretty good movie - even though its obviously independent and not big budget. It is an interesting and compelling documentary about life on the streets and how fiddy made it. There is alot of cool information (some stuff even I had never heard) - and like I said, the music and animations are fresh.

I give this movie the following ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
    Story: 5
    Animations: 4
    Music: 5
    Editing: 4
    Overall: 5

hope you all find this helpfuls. later,

1 out of 5 stars You Should Refuse To Watch.......2006-06-03

I was channel surfing one night and I landed on 50 Cent: Refuse To Die. At first, I thought it was an authorized production but I quickly began to realize that something wasn't right. This so-called documentary is loaded with hip-hop jams but none of them are from Fitty or the G-Unit camp. Also, the majority of the film features some of the crappiest animation I have ever seen. There are informative interviews with Fitty's Grandfather, DMC, Treach, and DJ Skribble but the movie still has a generic feel to it. I was glued to the film like someone watching a train-wreck. I kept wondering why 50 even agreed to narrate this turd up until the credits started rolling. The voice of 50 Cent was provided by an imposter named Leviticus Richardson. He had me fooled, but boy was I pissed. Remember all the bogus 2-Pac cds that hit the streets after he died? Several wannabes had copied Pac's flow to the max and we were bombarded with Mackaveli pts 2 to 92. Remember the Bruce Lee imitators? This smells like the same doo-doo. I'm not even a fan of today's hip-hop but I would love to hear what 50 and company have to say about this. I was tricked but there is no need for you to get played. Avoid this urine stained comic-book and watch Cartoon Network instead.

5 out of 5 stars It was great -but no Roberta Flack.......2007-05-16

I didnt see Roberta Flack on this video. It is a misleading item. The headliner is Tina Turner or Wilson Pickett. Nevertheless is is a great video of an old music festival in africa.

5 out of 5 stars No hype, truly a legendary concert film.......2004-12-29

I still have the soundtrack LP I purchased more than 30 years ago. I did not see the original film. The DVD release is an absolute joy. It is as much an educational documentary as it is a profound musical experience. Yes, I am disappointed the Roberta Flack performances were deleted, but the balance of what is provided is thoroughly satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars For IKE & TINA TURNER fans.......2004-11-11

I have to say this was a great show to watch; The intro was a great attention getter. I mean, if you're an Ike & Tina fan, like I am, then you got to get this video/DVD. Watching Tina & the Ikettes dancing from this 1971 film makes it clear to me where a lot of today's artisit get the desire to dance in front audiences, at least got it indirectly. Hip shaken and everything--did TV even show those kind of moves back then? Well with the exception of James Brown of course. And as most Ike & Tina fans know, there isn't that much legit footage of their performances. So this is worth getting for Ike & Tina viewing only. I was kind of disappointed that Santana wasn't shown much; although their performance of Black Magic Women was great. THe guiter sounds and intensity, it was great. I liked watching the energy of the Voices of East Harlem. I never even heard of them before watching the DVD. The young singer on that DVD was like another MIchael Jackson of that day. This kid was even doing the moon walk way before Michael. For the DVD, the commetary was good. You get to hear Ike Turner speaking w/ Les McCann about where his ideas fit in for his reveue, interesting. One thing to note, is that the Guanians (?) new who Wilson Pickett was; it's like they only came to see him, and no one else. The last performance of the film shows Picket singing land Of 1000 dances--wow! I mean the audiance went crazy. Watching them dance gets you energized. They start flying over the stage--mosh pit, I think. It's like everything done today by muscians really isn't something just invented, it's been around for years. You can also tell by the African dancers. Man, they really had it--I mean it's just soul, and they show it.

5 out of 5 stars Roberta Flack denied her permission to be included!.......2004-10-26

Sadly, Roberta Flack denied permission to the filmmakers to include her or her wonderful music in this dvd release. A real loss for all of us. However, the film is still a classic and worthy of inclusion in all serious film and music libraries.

    2 out of 5 stars Incomplete!.......2004-10-19

Roberta Flack is conspicuously missing from both the DVD
and CD releases. I have the original LP soundtrack, and
saw the original film, both of which included her great
performances. I don't know if this was her decision or the
filmmakers, but you cannot call this the ORIGINAL film.

    Description

Marvin Gaye is one of the legends of Black American music. His career stretched from Motown pop hits in the early 60's through the classic socially aware albums of the early 70's and the intensely personal records of his later years before his untimely death in 1984 on the eve of his 45th birthday. He won a Grammy award for "Sexual Healing" in 1982 and was inducted in to the Rock `n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987.

Behind The Legend is a musical biography of Marvin Gaye with a special focus on the later period of his life. It has contributions from Gaye's immediate family and from musicians and producers who worked with him. Also included is rare family archive footage of his "exile" periods in Belgium and Hawaii as well as intimate coverage of his bouts of drug abuse and his triumphant return to Los Angeles. The program features excerpts from "What's Going On", "Distant Lover", "Come Get To This", "Inner City Blues", "How Sweet It Is", "Sexual Healing" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".

As a bonus feature there are live performances of "Let's Get It On", a "What's Going On" medley and a "Duets" medley.

There is an insatiable appetite for Marvin Gaye material and this program will be a welcome addition to many fan's collections.

5 out of 5 stars Marvin Gaye: Behind the Legend.......2007-03-10

Extremely good!!!!!!!!! Even showed Marvin during his time in Europe when his spirit was healing. Was very good to see him at that time. To enjoy viewing those frozen moments of him is a joy. What a gift.

5 out of 5 stars I'm sticking with Amazon sellers from now on!.......2007-01-19

Around Thanksgiving 2006, I ordered a Marvin Gaye T-shirt from another site as a Christmas gift for my nephew, who worships Marvin. I received an email saying the item wasn't in stock ... A WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! This shoddy businessmanship (is that even a word?) has lost that seller what could have been a returning customer.

I was in a bind. I needed to find a gift that would arrive before Christmas, so I crossed my fingers and turned to Amazon.com. I ordered two Marvin Gaye DVDs and was prepared for them to arrive after Christmas, what with the abundance of holiday mail and my tardiness in ordering. However, they arrived in two days, as promised, and my nephew was thrilled with the DVDs. From now on, I will remain faithful to Amazon sellers!

    5 out of 5 stars I had no idea.......2006-03-09

The voice is amazing, but I had no idea about the man, that's why I purchased this DVD. The documentary started out cheesy and I thought to myself, 'oh, boy, a second-rate production by a friend of a friend of a friend...' But as the movie progressed, I realized that I was being invited into some very personal memories and visuals of this amazing, peace-loving fan by his very current surviving family. I learned things that have completely changed my opinion of this magnificent creature, and have dispelled the previous 'gossip' I had always believed to be true.

I rate it a 5 if you want to know about the man. The visuals, and entire production I would actually rate as a 3. So it depends on you of that you are looking for. The man, or the production. I think it's a keeper, regardless.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Presentation.......2006-01-22

Huge Marvin Gaye&this Documentary captures so many elements of the Man's life&the many things that went on in his Professional Life as well as Personal Life. he died so young&there is so much more Music he had to give to the World.I enjoy the footage&also the overall Presentation of His Legacy.this is a great Journey remembering One of the Greatest Musical Genius's to touch so many souls.
