This hip look at the Seattle music scene of the past decade treats the hype with bemused humor but treats the music with respect. Packed with witty interviews with band members, record execs, and Seattle music aficionados, much of the film places a welcome spotlight on the bands that didn't become part of the national "grunge" phenomenon and scores of live clips and rare recordings show that "the Seattle Sound" didn't begin with Nirvana or end with Soundgarden. You don't have to be a fan to enjoy this ebullient rockumentary, and if you're not careful, director Doug Pray's infectious love of the music may even make you one. This video features performances by Blood Circus, Coffin Break, Crackerbash, Dead Moon, Fastbacks, Flop, Gas Huffer, The Gits, Hammerbox, Love Battery, The Melvins, The Mono Men, Mudhoney, Nirvana, The Posies, Seaweed, 7 Year Bitch, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Soundgarden, Supersuckers, Young Fresh Fellows, and Zipgun, and includes Nirvana's first live performance of the grunge anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit." --Sean Axmaker

My Boyfriend Loved It!.......2007-02-19
I was so happy to find this for my boyfriend, I had shopped at several local video stores on search of this DVD, which is my boyfriends favorite movie. It was delivered quickly at a great price and we are very happy.
But Why is it Called Belly?.......2006-11-26
The American Dream is an appealing myth, no doubt. The idea that anybody can come from anywhere and strike it rich in America sounds great. The problem, as George Carlin put it, is that you have to be asleep to believe in it. So instead of representing opportunity for everybody it has become code for greed at all costs. And that is where "Belly" comes in, an ode to thug live and all the riches that come with it. This urban drama stars DMX (perpetually rapping), Nas, and Method Man and they would have you believe that they earned their cash by selling drugs and pimping as opposed to selling out to record companies. The story barely exists and seemed like a burden for the director who just wanted endless shots of people having sex and smoking drugs. When the plot does poke its head up I picked up on a criminal enterprise that moved shop from Queens to Omaha. Once there the cops get involved and people start getting shot. One couple tries to escape to Africa, but find it easier said than done. And Tommy (DMX) is sent on a mission to kill a minister. But really this film is about selling a lifestyle that doesn't even exist. Come on now, I've known drug dealers in my day, and they didn't live in large gaudy mansions . . . rap stars do. Rather they live in shacks or their parent's basement.
If my response to the film seems lukewarm it is because it is. The directing by Hype Williams isn't that bad. He is able to capture some beautiful images and uses a few creative camera tricks. The lighting never seems quite right, but I'm gonna let that one slide. As a man who has always called for more sex and drugs in films I can hardly complain about their presence here. There people are living life to the fullest and are certainly not being weighed down by bourgeois conventions. All that said this film still fully deserves the big no vote that I am going to give it. As the most nihilistic person I know I am surprised to report that this one really seemed lost. Any image they could flash on the screen that would appeal to the wannabes in the audience was used. The N and F words are used to comedic proportions. Their palaces that represent their gluttony are turned into war zones and destroyed for no good reason. And then, on top of it all, we have to listen to the characters wax philosophical on how leading this life somehow places them on a higher plain than the rest of us. Sorry man, but just because you sell drugs instead of stocks doesn't make you any less slimy than those Wall Street hacks. You're still a businessman. This film is not worth watching. Any social point that is made is made accidentally, and any filmmaking skills the director may have are lost under his love fest for all things gangsta. **1/4
Depictive of life in the Ghetto.......2006-08-10
This movie was great due to the fact that it shows what life really is like in the so-called "Ghetto". It shows the endless crime and reality of the New York Streets. Even though its a fictional work, it depicts fact. Places like East New York Brooklyn, and the South Bronx are constant reminders of the Urban War in the streets--and this movie would be a good portrayel of the "hood life". I recommend this movie to all who want to know what ghetto life is like...check it out.
A gun shot in the Belly........2006-06-02
Hype Williams is the greatest music video director of all time.
This, however, does not automatically mean the transition to film is going to be a good one.
The movie is not good. I don't know if it's supposed to be a black Scarface or what, but it's really bad.
Rappers are not known for their Oscar-worthy work, and Nas and DMX are no exception. DMX has charisma, but he needs to work on remembering he's reciting lines, not rapping.
I love T-boz, but she needs to stick to her day job.
Taral Hicks is a good actress, but her talents are wasted here. I don't buy her as a bad girl.
I know The Godfather was an inspiration for Hype, but his attempt to give the movie a dark tint backfired. He made it too dark. Everytime I see the movie, I mistakenly think I'm looking at a bootleg or something.
Hype should start over in film by directing material written by someone else.
pretty cheesy.......2006-04-04
Big fan of Nas, but this moive's a bit over the top and have some good messages that suffer because of it. Visually flashy, vacant plot, and messages are reduced to sermonizing. Skip this and watch Juice instead.

Writer Ron Shelton (Tin Cup) and former National Lampoon scribe Tony Hendra collaborated on the script for this satire about a boxing promoter (Samuel L. Jackson) who gets behind a white fighter (Peter Berg) after his black slugger (Damon Wayans) is mired in a losing streak. While sharp and funny, it's never quite clear what the point of it all is. Director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) isn't strong enough or skilled enough as a filmmaker to make this level of satire leap off the screen; fortunately, he's got powerful allies in Jackson, Berg, Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, and the rest of the cast. --Tom Keogh
Description
He's the flashiest, wildest, richest, most outspoken promoter the boxing world has ever known. He's the Reverend Fred Sultan, and when the sport's popularity wanes, he comes up with a heavyweight plan to turn things around.
Customer Reviews:
Not for everybody.......2006-12-04
I've noticed that the only people who love this movie as much as I do are boxing fans. If you're a boxing fan then you're going to get all the little inside jokes about the sport that boxing fans can't miss. I think the movie more of a spoof on the Holmes-Cooney fight in 1982 than anything else. Yes the jokes are racial, but boxing is a racist sport. Not that anybody is discriminated against but boxing fans tend to support their own and this movie pokes fun at that. Lighten up people and enjoy the laughs
Finally..........2004-06-07
Okay the DVD itself isn't so great with only minimal features but why I give this 4 stars is because I waited FOREVER for this thing to finally be released. It is one of my all-time favorite comedies and I laugh so much everytime I see it. It is about time that this was finally released and I say it rules!
It would be even better on DVD.......2004-01-23
Make that 4 people who saw it in the theatre. This is just one of those movies that somehow got passed over. I've worn out my VHS copy. I've seen thousands of movies once. I've seen this movie more times than I can count. Scenes and dialog from "THE GREAT WHITE HYPE" have become part of my comedy repetoire...that nobody ever gets...
I'm With Tony - Why No DVD?.......2003-10-09
In my opinion, this is one of the funniest movies made during the 1990's.
Sure it has some racist overtones, but we all need to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes...
why isn't this on DVD?.......2003-01-20
The only thing that could make this movie better is it being on DVD.

Customer Reviews:
A very important documentary.......2006-09-01
This film is very important to understand the Seattle Sound and the musical movement in the last decade. PEARL JAM sounds very good playing "Not For you". There a a lot of great performances of Mudhoney, Fastbacks, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. Also There are interviews with Eddie Vedder, Charles Peterson (ex subpop photographer), Mark Arm, etc.
I recomend this film for everyone.
Life changing..........2006-06-18
I saw this sometime back in 2001, I believe. A friend of mine bought it on VHS for a dollar from some bargain bin somewhere.
Being a huge fan of heavy music and rock over the past 20+ years, this movie opened my eyes to a whole new scene like nothing ever had before. Of course I had been a fan of Nirvana, AIC and Soundgarden in the early to mid 90's, but this film exposes you to the origins of all that. With a little independant research, you can then find all sorts of gems of bands and albums you might truly enjoy. Mudhoney, The Supersuckers and The Murder City Devils are three of my favorite bands and I first sought them out as a direct result of watching "Hype" and then doing my own investigating from there. It won't steer you wrong. What's up with the new cover though? Used to be black and white stage diving scene with red letters.
Hype.......2006-04-01
Have not read the book yet but am shocked at such an angry review by Frederick A Cooper. Why did he even watch the documentary? He obviously does not like grunge or most of the people involved with it. When someone is happy that people have died a tragic death it just shows he has some internal issues he needs to work on. Next time don't bother buying the DVD much less reviewing it in all your negativity, we don't want to hear it! I would also recomend uping your prozac a little bit.
AWESOME!!.......2006-03-17
the first time i saw this i was amazed. this is an awesome rockumentary!
INDEED!.......2006-03-11
Very,VERY good stuff. I have been a fan of the (shall we say..)loud stuff for quite some time.Everybody gets a turn at bat. In the 70's it was The Saints, The Nils, The Buzzcocks,Ramones,Pistols,Clash,Handsome Dick Manatoba and the gang....the whole hybrid thrash/political/sex starved/straight edge -Bad Brains,Black Flag,Husker Du,Minor Threat,GBH,Fear,Circle Jerks,Anti System,Misfits,Scream and so on.I love the film because it had heart and it had an insight on its own implosion. I happen to like a lot of the bands that were on this tape(I am from NY BTW)The Posies needed to be grouped in there because they played with (and are friends with) Nirvana, which brings me to my next comment...If you don't like the sound--"FINE"-but when you are happy because someone is dead, you are a messed up person. If you like the Hollies, good for you. I like their stuff as well, but to wish death upon someone because you think the movie "sucks" is absolute rubbish. These bands kick ass on their own terms and did not ask to be filmed. I for one am happy they were.

Hype Williams - The Videos, Vol. 1.......2004-06-29
These are good videos, no doubt. Hype Williams was a big influence for people like Paul Hunter and Little X. But this whole set is disappointing and predictable. Why must he give us the videos that we've all seen a million times before and can still see today on BET or MTV? How many times have we seen TLC's "No Scrubs" and Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'"? Where's all of the lesser-known works like Jay-Z's "Can't Knock the Hustle?" Where's R. Kelly's "I Can't Sleep Baby (remix)"? Lin'Que's "Let It Fall"? Any Missy videos? I was geeked to see Wu-Tang Clan's "Can It Be All So Simple" but was upset because they cut the preview of the "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuttin..." video with "coming soon" shown at the bottom. And the interview with Hype was pretty dull. You're better off taping these videos off the TV; at least then you'll get the uncensored version of "No Scrubs" (they block out the "a" and "h" words on here).
The disappointed soldier in Iraq.......2003-08-27
Im very disappointed with this company service. I have yet to recieve my product. I ordered it about 3 weeks ago and counting.
good videos, poor extras.......2002-07-23
The videos themselves are great, although I found the choice of Mase's "Feel So Good" a bit questionable. Wu-Tang's "Can It all Be So Simple" was a great pick because it is lesser known and from early in Hype's career. I would have liked a couple more videos included, especially from earlier on, in addition to Missy's "Rain" video. The extras, I thought, were poor. Hype's commentary is sometimes interesting but becomes redundant. The (quite short) interview was worse, seemingly taken in one shot, with not even enough care to keep background noises (such as laughter) from interfering. Hype really had little to say, and no questions were really posed to him. This interview could have been much better. If you like the videos themselves, get the DVD but don't expect too much from the extras.
Great videos...so so DVD production........2002-07-13
I enjoyed watching (and re-living) Hype's videos and I took special interest in hearing his commentary on each video. On a few videos you could tell in his voice that he wanted to share more with the viewers but held himself back in order to "protect the innocent". I only hope that he dishes out some of the juicy details on his next volume.
I was dissappointed in the quality of Hype's interview for the DVD. For a man who has put out some spectacular looking video productions, it looked like his intreview was shot with an old 8mm home movie camera.
AWESOME HIP-HOP COMPILATION!.......2002-07-12
Hype Williams is the greatest! I have been waiting VERY long for a DVD like this to come out and I have to say it was worth the wait! All the tracks are "Hype" and you can't go wrong for the all true hip-hop fans out there! Worth the purchase in every way!

Fun, but lacks content........2006-02-27
Starts out great with nice rides and some crazy driving. After that all the nice rides go away and you're left with some home videos of kids messing around with fireworks and remote control cars.
Sorta boring after the first 20 minutes.
