Description
Cliff 'Em All, Metallica's first video, is a tribute to late original bassist Cliff Burton. James Hetfield describes it as "a compilation of bootleg footage shot by sneaky Metallifux, stuff shot for TV that was never used, but we've held onto, home footage, personal fotos and us drunk. But most important, it's really a look back at the 3-1/2 years that Cliff was with us and includes his best bass solos and the home footage and pix that we feel best capture his unique personality and style." 1987. 90 minutes.

One of the best Metal Releases (cd or dvd) and the BEST OF METALLICA .......2007-07-02
This is one of my most favorite Metal Releases I own. It's Metallica at their best featuring live footage/versions of songs from their acclaimed intitial trilogy of the true Metallica Sound (Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets). Here, we see the true start of the Metallica Legacy prior to their rise to fame and the 360 they made in their music and style after their success with the black album.
Here, we get a gritty and raw look at the band which is both a tribute to the passing of their original bass player, Cliff Burton, Who died in the band's tragic Tour bus accident and the end of Metallica as a hungry and a very, heavy metallic band.
You'll see here film of the band in early days playing clubs and as openers for the likes of Ozzy. You'll even get to see film of when Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) was there as Metallica's Original Guitarist.
If you want to see and hear Metallica at their very best, get this DVD!!!Next to Bing and Purge, This is the best you'll ever see Metallica to be. (Unlike the mess of the Madonna Truth or Dare Wanna-Be Film Metallica released called SOME KIND OF MONSTER, which could have easily been titled SOME KIND OF MISTAKE--The film that you could say has killed Metallica's credibility as being known as Metal Masters.)...
Thank goodness for Cliff 'Em All....
Pretty cool.......2007-03-01
Its a good Video, Cliff ruled! Best part about it is the footage of Dave Mustaine....The King of Metal!!!
Long Live The Metallica Mobile! .......2006-11-03
I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in '86 at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago and will never forget that they all piled into a beater car they dubbed the "Metallica Mobile" and headed to the local metal radio station in Highland Park for an impromptu interview and phone calls. What set this band completely apart from their competition was how in touch they seemed with their fan base, who were growing increasingly tired of the hairspray, spandex and special effects taking over once decent metal bands. Instead, Metallica seemed much like thier fans themselves. Seeing this video always brings back memories of that concert, for the footage of their opener, "Creeping Death", shows a view that almost appears to have been shot in the exact seat I was sitting in! It also reminds me of how powerful & raw these guys were, as opposed to the horrendous performance by Ozzy, who not only cut his encore because "Jake is sick", but looked like a bloated, Bea Arthur clone with his big hair and glittery Muumuu. Such a disappointment. The Ultimate Sin indeed. And who knew this would be my last chance to see Cliff Burton? He died a month or two later.
This enormously popular video, released two years after Burton died, was watched endlessly by Metal Heads at the time. It may be hard for younger viewers used to such high standards in DVD to adjust to the poor quality contained here. Part of the reasons for this are likely because Metallica was initially fervant opponents to video and any other type of "sell out" publicity. This, of course, made them heroes to their fans, but ultimately presented very difficult business compromises for them further down the road. At any rate, this ethic of theirs - while well-intentioned - turns out to be a real shame in hindsight; there may not be any professionally shot footage of them in their younger days.
What is here is largely fan-shot (i.e., illegally taped initially, but later released officially by the band) with some television stuff from overseas. Some of the earlier club stuff may have been shot by the band's management so the members could critique their own perfomance. The best quality comes from "Day on the Green" in their homebase of Oakland (For Whom the Bell Tolls) which alone makes this worth picking up.
Still, this release obviously hasn't been touched in all its 18 years. I'm sure the sound, for one, could be cleaned up considerably with better source material surely in existence someplace, and some original video masters (esp. of the TV stuff) could be tracked down and spruced up. It would be nice for Metallica to take a lesson from the recent Led Zeppelin & Kiss 2-dvd packages and root through their archives to see what would be suitable for a more comprehensive release. I'd hate to think that this is it for the Cliff Burton era.
He CIiffed Them All.......2006-08-27
Cliff was the soul of Metallica, James the heart, Lars the mind, Kirk it consience. When Cliff died the rare and wonderful creature that was Metallica was left a sad and spiritless thing like some kind of monster. There will never be anything new from Cliff Burton and this video is probably all we'll ever have. If you love music you must own this. Although if youre good when you die Santa might take you to heaven to listen to Cliff jam together with Randy Rhodes. Wheres that razor?
Pretty awesome Metallica DVD... beats some kind of monster.......2006-07-23
I first saw this DVD when my boyfriend brought it over to my house. I loved the concert footage in this dvd, since it was filmed when Metallica was still a thrash band. There is concert footage, some of it shows Cliff doing bass solos. There is also a scene where a women is interviewing the band and asks them about their influences. One scene also is a performance while Dave Mustaine was still in the band. There are some scenes that just show the band drinking and having a good old time. Great dvd, although several scenes dont even have cliff in them. A must have for the diehard Metallica/ Cliff Burton fan!
