Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Only Funny When Your High.......2007-06-28
I've seen this movie 4 times now and ever since the first time I sit there wondering "What the heck do people think is funny in this movie" - Than I realized that if I had been high when I watched it this movie probably would have been hilarious! That's actually a good thing because than I could have some killer food and laugh at this stuff even though usually I'd just turn it off lol
Classic.......2007-06-26
What is there to say about this, except that this is a classic. Great extra stuff with the DVD and as usual a comical movie from beginning to end. What you would expect form Monty Python.
Silly, Clever.......2007-06-20
It's easy to dismiss this movie and everything done by the Monty Python troupe as silly, throw-away. But you would be doing yourself a huge disservice. There's an underlying deep understanding of the very legends and events the boys are making such merry fun of.
This 'special edition' was not worth it if you look at it from the point of view of the extra scene - it truly is throw-away. However, the extras range from interesting (how the castle was used in various and sundry scenes) to funny (how to get your own coconuts and run like a silly person around the castle grounds).
As I said, merry fun. Hilarious... don't miss this movie!
Wow, the funniest movie of all time.... totally worth buying.......2007-06-19
This movie is HILARIOUS!!!! No, not the cute kind like in Ella Enchanted, nor the crude kind used with cursing and bad language. It's the kind that has you laughing at every scene and 35 years later repeating lines word for word like "Bring out your dead!" or "I'm not quite dead yet. I'm getting better!" and my favorite, most popular line.." What is the air-height velocity of an unladen swallow?"
The movie is set in the middle ages, starting with King Arthur looking for more knights to sit with him at his round table.
The movie makers came up with everything, from a "Trojan Rabbit" to The bridge of Death to a vicious little bunny, the guardian of the Holy Grail.
The only part I didn't like was "Sir Gallahad's Adventure", which is not very long. not long at all.
Me and my friends liked it This movie so much that we actually wrote a play, acted it out, and filmed it. We wanted to call it Monty Python and the Holy Hand grenade, since we stole most of our ideas from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but we decided it wasn't very original. We called our play The good, the Bad, and the Doofas. sorry, hopping down a bunny trail there. Moving on.
Anywaaaay, This movie is down- right hilarious, adventuresome, and has something fun in it every 5 minutes.
and, no, there are no sad, weepy, slow background scenes where the main character is sitting alone, crying his heart out. no romance scenes either HOORAY!!
Bring out your dead!.......2007-05-31
Where can I start with is classic? It has all of the famous Monty Python skits (missing is the parrot skit) and is still hilarious -- viewing after viewing. The material, after all of these years, is still fresh. My fourteen year old niece recently saw the movie for the first time and it has become one of her favorites. Buy this movie or...I'll turn you into a newt!

Based upon T.H. White's beloved novel, this Disney-fied version chronicles the tutoring of the Once and Future King, Arthur, as handled by the magician Merlin. Sword was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upbraiding storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. But there's much to enjoy here as Merlin shows Newt, the young Arthur, things that will help him become the ruler of the Britons. The transformation sequences, where the boy is turned into a fish, a bird, and a squirrel are vintage Disney. The oft-repeated scene of Merlin battling it out with the mean old Madame Mim still is worth a few chuckles, but it belies the problem with most of the film--the scenes are only there for the chuckles. References by Merlin to television and other items of modern life also mar the generally innocuous landscape. Children will like it, but they won't cherish it. --Keith Simanton

Customer Reviews:
Great classic movie.......2007-05-13
My boys loved this movie. Most of the older Disney movies are about Princesses and this was nice for my boys who love knights and castles.
Classic.......2007-03-19
I grew up with this film, now i bought it for my 3 and 5 yo nephews and they watch it over and over. Classic Disney.
A good example of early Disney DVD........2007-03-19
When Disney released The Sword In The Stone onto DVD in 2001, Disney had only really gotten into releasing their movies onto DVD within the last two years, starting with their failed Limited Issue line. The Gold Collection followed, with some of the Limited Issues repackaged as Gold Collection titles, and more titles released. Most of these had decent, if not somwhat problematic DVD transfers and few, if any, bonus materials. However, a few of Disney's Gold Collection titles were given decent releases. Among those are the 30th Anniversary Edition of Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Although not officially a Gold Collection title by many people's standards, it says Gold Collection on the spine.) and this 2001 DVD release of The Sword In The Stone.
First off, the film is given a nice transfer here. The DVD case boasts that it's ''fully restored and remastered.'' Although it's not up to par with the Platinum Edition restorations or the Masterpiece Edition of Alice In Wonderland's transfer, it IS far better than many of the other Gold Collection transfers. It's nicely cleaned up, although it's a bit grainier than one would like, and there's still a bit of dirt in the transfer. The colors have been punched up nicely, though. The video transfer here is very satisfying, as is the audio mix.
The disc also includes quite a few good bonus materials. A Sword In The Stone scrapbook features concept art for the film, production photos, character design, concept poster art, official poster art, and more. Two sing-alongs lifted from Disney's Sing-Along Songs video series provide fun captions for two of the film's more memorable songs. Film Facts is...well, basically that. Two animated shorts, ''Knight For A Day'' and ''Brave Little Tailor'' are very entertaining. ''Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers'' has the Shermans talking about songs they wrote for The Sword In The Stone, including a couple that were deleted. (The Shermans also did a Music Magic featurette for Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and that one WAS better, because it also gave a little info on the making of the film, as well as its 1996 restoration.) Finally, an episode of Walt Disney's Disneyland TV series is included - ''All About Magic'' from 1957. Although this isn't directly related to The Sword In The Stone, its inclusion is to be praised nonetheless.
My only disappointment in this DVD is the lack of any sort of theatrical trailer or TV spot. Come on, Disney!
Nonetheless, The Sword In The Stone is a fine example of Disney's earliest attempts to give their movies the deluxe treatment on single-disc DVD releases, reserving their 2-Disc DVD releases for Platinum Editions (This was the year that Snow White's Platinum Edition DVD was released.) and the DVD releases of their most recent animated features. I wholeheartedly recommend this DVD for fans of the film.
The Sword in the Stone.......2007-01-29
Recieved quickly, good condition, thank you for the great service
good clean fun.......2007-01-15
I grew up watching Disney's "The Sword In the Stone" myself, and now I get to introduce my kids to that magic! full of fun scenes as Merlin, "the world's most powerful wizard," tutors young king Arthur (an orphan everyone calls "Wart"), there's plenty of madcap magic in this heartwarming "ugly duckling" story.

Danny Kaye spoofs Robin Hood and Scaramouche in this inventive slapstick swashbuckler. Portraying the clownish but good-hearted entertainer Hawkins, he infiltrates the court of the corrupt Basil Rathbone (up to his usual brand of cruel villainy) disguised as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. After a court sorceress hypnotizes Hawkins into believing he is also a legendary assassin, Hawkins has more identities than he can keep straight, and Kaye zips back and forth between them at, literally, a snap of the fingers. Comic highlights include a wonderful sword fight with Rathbone in which he constantly switches identities, and the classic "chalice from the palace/vessel with pestle" wordplay as Hawkins plays "hide the poison" and forgets where it is. With comely Glynis Johns as his spy-in-arms love interest, Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess, and Mildred Natwick as the dotty spellcaster, this is Danny Kaye at his comic best. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Side Splitter.......2007-06-27
Absolutely one of Danny Kaye's best. I laughed so hard that there were tears. Truly an enjoyable movie. I just don't think they make them like this anymore.
Court Jester.......2007-06-11
Danny Kaye's ultimate best film. It is funny, romantic and empathic. He wants to be a hero type, but ends up hiding the baby King from the bad guy. He is enchanted by a court witch who convinces him he is a true hero with the snap of anyone's fingers. The most memorable line is "Get it? Got it? Good" -- Danny did his own sword fight, but the villian was in reality a great sword fighter and would not fight Danny when he was goofing off. --- A MUST SEE MOVIE
Prep for Engineering Final Exam.......2007-04-29
In 1958 I had to take an exam in Engineering Drawing from 2-5pm on a friday. I wanted to take my mind off of the exam in the morning so I went to the theatre to catch a matinee. It was the "Court Jester". It was the funniest movie I ever saw, and while taking the exam, the proctor was forced to move me into an adjacent room as I couldn't stop chuckling during the exam. I "aced" the test and was forever grateful to Danny Kay, Glynnis Johns (who was beautiful), Basil Rathbone ( the great) and Angela Lansbury who I forever after had a difficulty in seeing her in later films as a sweet lovable old lady.
Danny Kaye is the best!.......2007-04-10
This movie is just as great as I remember it from when I was a little kid!
My mom and I, every Saturday would watch old movies on tv, and my favorites were always Danny Kaye movies, this one is by far my favorite!
Danny plays the best part as the jester, his style is like no other!
I recommend this movie to anyone who wants a lighthearted laugh!
The Court Jester.......2007-03-28
Danny Kaye is brilliant in this movie. His "Vessel with the Pessle" routine is one of the best. Danny Kaye is at his best. The midgets in the
movie offset his humor.

Kevin Costner's lousy English accent is a small obstacle in this often exciting version of the Robin Hood fable. That aside, it's refreshing to have a preface to the old story in which we meet the robber hero of Sherwood Forest as a soldier in King Richard's Crusades, coming home to find his people under siege from the cruelties of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). After Robin and his community of outcasts and fighters take to the trees, director Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, 187) is on more familiar narrative ground, and he goes for the gusto with lots of original action (Robin shoots two arrows simultaneously from his bow in two directions). Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as Marion, makes a convincing damsel in distress, and Morgan Freeman brings dignity to his role as Robin's Moor friend. Alan Rickman, however, gets the most attention for his scene-chewing role as the rotten sheriff, an almost campy performance that is highly entertaining but perhaps a little out of sorts with the rest of the film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.......2007-05-14
Charming love story with a good bit of humor built in. Kevin Costner is perfect for the part of Robin Hood. Not only is he gorgeous, but you truly believe that he's capable of being that hero that Robin Hood was.
An example of why I hate extended versions of movies.......2007-05-09
First of all this movie is a classic. I remember watching it all the time when I was a kid. I'm pissed though because of the way they have released this movie on dvd. First, they put the original version on two sides of the disc, which force the viewer to get up and flip the dvd to finish the movie. Then they make this 2 disc special edition with a whole lot of new scenes that totally didn't need to be in the movie. Plus, they don't even include the original version on the 2 disc special edition. Jesus christ, what does a person have to do to get a great movie decently put on dvd? Is it too much to ask of these movie companies that they show these movies proper respect?
One of my favorites!.......2007-05-09
Okay... when this movie came out it was panned by the critics. And aside from a special few of whom I've discussed this movie, it isn't a big favorite of the masses.
But I ignore everyone else's opinion because I totally love this movie! Purchased this DVD to replace my VHS. I love the story, I love the actors, and I love the Brian Adams song at the end. I'm a stickler for a good villian, and this movie has one. Not necessarily the evilest, but unintentionally, character wise, very funny.
If you've not seen this movie, perhaps you should rent it first, but sometimes purchasing a used movie is actually cheaper than renting it. And if you don't like it... sell it on e-bay.
Kevin Costner's best.......2007-05-05
Kevin Costner may have received some criticism for this movie, to wit: his lack of an accent. He may have gotten more accolades for other more mediocre films, to wit: Dances with Wolves. But in my book, this is the best movie he's ever done. This is just a good, wholesome, fun, rendition of the classic story. It deserves to be watched and enjoyed by anyone - even those who rightfully panned such losers as Waterworld and The Postman.
Response to an earlier review.......2007-03-17
I have to agree with the other positive reviews of the Two-Disc special extended edition. I do want to respond to one reviewer who said that key scenes were cut from the original... I'm not sure about the other scenes referred to, but I am currently watching the movie, and I can definitly say the scene where Robin cuts the Sheriff's cheek is in the extended version. It is very fast... the cutting sequence is probably less than 1/2 second so you have to be watching for it... but it is there.

This lushly produced fantasy has gained a loyal following since its release in 1985, and it gave a welcomed boost to the careers of Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Rutger Hauer. You have to ignore the overly aggressive music score (critic Pauline Kael aptly dubbed it "disco-medieval") and director Richard Donner's reckless allowance of anachronistic dialogue and uninspired storytelling, but there's a certain charm to the movie's combination of romance and heroism. Broderick plays a young thief who comes to the aid of tragic lovers Isabeau (Pfeiffer), who is cursed to become a hawk every day at sunrise and Navarre (Hauer) who turns into a wolf at sunset. The curse was cast by an evil sorcerer-bishop (John Wood), and as Broderick eludes the bishop's henchmen, Navarre struggles to conquer the villain, lift the curse, and be reunited with his love in human form. The tragedy of this lovers' dilemma keeps the movie going, and Broderick is well cast as a young, medieval variation of Woody Allen. --Jeff Shannon

Classic.......2007-07-09
I always enjoy watching Ladyhawke, it's such a great, timeless story of love and adventure. Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfieffer were clearly perfect for the parts in this film. The story of star-crossed lovers is classic but Broderick (as well as the 80s synth score) add a great sense of humor to the plot. Definitely a must-have for your DVD collection. Enjoy.
Great Movie.......2007-05-21
This was a great movie, it has romance, action/adventure, betrayal and love, and of course, Matthew Broderick's smart mouth. The scenes with Rutger and Michelle were tear jerkers. I think they did a great job with the casting.
a must have for family video library.......2007-05-15
Humor, romance, drama, fantasy...this movie has it all. A family ready story of love denied. Matthew Brodrick at his best, using sly wit to counter the seriousness with which the others actors played their roles.
wonderful.......2007-05-07
What a great romance. I watched it when I was younger and I think I enjoy it even more now. It was such a moving story that your heart just goes out to the characters.
A timeless Hit!.......2007-03-26

Joshua Logan's 1967 film of the hit Broadway musical about the love triangle between King Arthur (Richard Harris), Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero) is strong on star emphasis and weak on such fundamentals as story and sets. Except for a handful of solidly dramatic scenes--such as Guenevere grieving, late in the film, for the ruination she and Lancelot have caused--there's not a lot to get excited about. (The story's theme of a lost, great society, however, certainly struck a chord in the 1960s.) The Lerner-Loewe songs ("If Ever I Would Leave You," "Camelot") pretty much sell themselves, even if they are, at best, only proficiently performed in this movie. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Abysmal production of a great musical.......2007-05-25
Vanessa Redgrave can't sing - perhaps the song should be "The Simple Joys of Silence" instead of "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood".
Franco Nero leaves you cold.
Richard Harris, however, is the one, bright, shining moment in this Camelot. The Broadway Version which he did in '82 is head and shoulders above this.
Best King Arthur story going.......2007-03-12
Great acting, wonderful vocals, outstanding cinematography for its time. I loved it as a kid and I love it now too. It seems a bit long by today's standards, but mainly because people are now used to bam-bam-bam action. This is a classy classic with eternal themes.
The Arthur Legend.......2007-01-19
'Camelot' provides a romaticized version of the Arthurian Legend, with the emphasis on the relation between Arthur and Guinevere, while the controversy between Celt and Saxon is not mentioned.
Fantastic performances of both Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave, with excellent 'lasting' music like 'How to handle a woman'. For the 'afficionado' of the Arthurian legend a 'must-have'.
Great gift.......2007-01-19
My parents asked for this DVD for Christmas and I gave it to them. They love this movie and have enjoyed it for years now. They were very happy to have received it and have watched it several times. My sister borrowed it from them and is now watching too!
Character building!!!!.......2007-01-15
A movie that entertains and has a moral lesson to it,... unlike most of the junk we see today!
On parr with Goodbye Mr. Chips (Peter O`Toole) and My Fair Lady.

Give it a chance you just might like it.......2007-06-27
If you like movies produced by Jerry Bruckhiemer you should enjoy this movie. I found it a very entertaining telling of King Arthur and his knights. There are no shockers just a good blockbuster. Clive Owen does a good job as do the other Knights in the movie. In fact the other knights make the movie more enjoyable and don't forget about Keira Knightley in 1080p!
The movie looks great on blu-ray some scenes are a little soft but if you watch the sd-dvd you will see the same thing. The sound was good, though I can only comment on the DD 5.1. I am sure the uncompressed track is even better.
Don't go nuts picking it apart just pop some popcorn and enjoy, thats the point of movies after all.
King Arthur.......2007-06-24
Nice movie. Not one of the best out there but I definitely did enjoy this. A somewhat more realistic view to the tale of King Arthur and his legend. It's predictable but the actor / actress were entertaining. Nice picture and sound on a plasma TV.
King Arthur comes to Life!!.......2007-05-13
The Director's Cut of King Arthur on Blu-Ray disc has needle sharp video and a bursting soundtrack. The image is a bit on the dark side but this renders a superb color saturation througout the film. A real exciting story about my favorite legend, to be enjoyed even more in 1080p.
King Arthur - Extended Director's Cut [Blu-ray]
Very good take on the Arthur legend........2007-05-12
Having Clive Owen as Arthur was an excellent choice. Taking the Arthur story in a new direction was interesting. There have already been many books and movies that detailed Arthur , Merlin and the whole crew. This movie takes Arthur and brings him back to the Earth as more of a soldier and leader of a group of men. I enjoyed the cast and new direction. The Blu-Ray disc looks very good and has an excellent audio track.King Arthur - Extended Director's Cut [Blu-ray]Mary Stewart's Merlin TrilogyKnights of the Round TableThe Mists of AvalonFirst KnightExcalibur (The Arthur Books #3)Excalibur [HD DVD]

...And it's a very well done movie. Great acting by the entire cast, massive sets and intricate costume designs, epic bloody battles ala Braveheart. It's all here. I really don't understand the backlash this movie has received, and it mostly seems to stem from the King Arthur hardcores who are trying to compare this to the original story. It's not the original story, and I think the director makes that very clear. So please stop trying to rip the movie apart and compare apples to oranges. Take it for what it's worth, a fantasy movie loosely based off the King Arthur name & legend, nothing more, nothing less, but done VERY WELL with high production values all around. King arthur deserves to be right aside your other medeval/fantasy movie epics: Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, Lord of the Rings, and Gladiator. If you are a fan of "the genre" and not "the facts", do yourself a favor and get this movie ASAP. And yes the Blu-Ray version looks FANTASTIC - jaw dropping on my Bravia 46". $19.99 and well worth every cent!!!

A couple of old Dames make the slender story of Ladies in Lavender surprisingly moving. Janet and Ursula (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench), a pair of elderly sisters living on the Cornish coast, discover a young Polish man named Andrea (Daniel Bruhl, Goodbye Lenin!) washed ashore and barely alive. They nurse him back to health and discover that he's a talented violinist--a fact also recognized by a mysterious young woman (Natascha McElhone, The Truman Show), who may woo Andrea away from them. The core of the movie is not its plot but the skillful and delicate play of emotions underlying how the sisters treat Andrea; Ursula, a spinster, finds herself sliding from maternal affection to an embarrassing but irresistible schoolgirl crush. Ladies in Lavender captures something that few contemporary movies bother to consider: Older men and women are as capable of passion and desire as the young, but the young carelessly (and sometimes cruelly) disregard the old. In the hands of Dench (Shakespeare in Love, Iris) and Smith (California Suite, Gosford Park)--as well as David Warner (Time After Time) as a bitter doctor--Ladies in Lavender becomes a bit like a violin concerto itself: Discreet and subtle, but finding in the smallest movements a richness of feeling. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Superb Acting and Cinematography...........2007-07-05
In pre-war England two sisters, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, have their quiet seaside vacation abruptly interrupted when they notice the body of a young man washed ashore near their cottage the morning after a terrible storm. They take the young man home and, with the help of their housekeeper (a real card...she's hysterical!) begin the arduous process of nursing him back to health. When he is strong enough to be able to communicate with them, they realize he is of Polish descent. Thus one of the sisters, Ursula (played beautifully by Judi Dench) takes it upon herself to teach him English, and in the process, develops romantic feelings for him. We soon learn that the young man is Andrea, a gifted violinist who was trying to get to America in pursuit of a better life. As he grows stronger in health and is constantly provided for by the sisters, he begins to yearn for friendships outside of their household. However, the two sisters, particularly Ursula, remain very possessive of him and make every attempt to limit his outside dealings with others. Conflict arises when Andrea befriends a beautiful German artist who has rented a cottage in town, and the villagers begin to suspect that they are up to no good.
What is so refreshing about this film is the superb acting by Dench, Smith and an outstanding supportive cast. Nothing is forced on the viewer; the action is all very laid back and the story just sort of unravels as the actors carry us from one scene to another. Granted, the entire premise of the story is a bit, dare I say "unimaginative", but the acting is what makes this so incredibly beautiful. Give this one a go on a leisurely afternoon when you have a couple of hours to spare and want to spend uniterrupted time with a laid back movie. You'll be glad you did.
A precious gem.......2007-06-27
Other reviewers have more or less summarized the plot of this film: set in the days before World War II commences, two spinster sisters have their genteel lives disrupted by a near-dead young man washed up on the shore in front of their Cornish home. As they nurse him back to health, the younger sister falls helplessly in love with him.
So many reviewers have chosen to focus on the age of the actresses, yet what is really important here is the sparse script, the light-handed direction, and the consumate skill with which the three leads and the supporting cast play their roles. It is quite heartbreaking to see Ursula going so hopelessly through the pangs of a love she should have felt in her teens or early twenties, when now she is in her sixties. The young men she would have known and loved all died in the trenches of World War One, so her naive heart is helpless in the face of her first love. As she comments towards the end of the movie, "it's not fair."
This is a beautiful miniature of a movie, akin to a Vermeer in the way it captures all the tiny details of someone else's life and touches us with the humanity of what we all share: our vulnerable hearts. We see the various characters trying to pursue as best they can their various agendas; yet in the end it is the one person who does not appear to pursue anything who ends up winning all. The young man Andreas, who months before was washed up on a foreign beach, ends up performing a masterwork in London to the acclaim of all. He is really just the mechanism through means of which the hearts of others are variously exposed.
Maggie Smith and Judi Dench turn in performances that are breathtaking in their craft and apparent simplicity. If Oscars were actually handed out for acting, they each would have scored Best Leading Actress. This movie is a masterwork of understatement, a poignant triumph.
The Ladies are magnificent - but they always are.......2007-06-17
"Ladies in Lavender" (2004) is a film starring two of the best British actresses, Dame Judy Dench and Dame Maggie Smith as two lonely sisters, a widow and an old maid who live quietly and uneventfully in their cottage on the seaside in Cornwall, England. The film takes place in 1936 before the WWII begins. One morning, the sisters discover a young man, almost a boy injured and washed ashore near their home and their lives were changed forever. The sisters take the boy in and care for him. As time passes, they learn that Andrea was on the ship heading to America where he hoped to become a professional musician. Andrea is extremely talented violinist and one day, his playing attracts the attention of a young Russian woman -painter, Olga who lives in the village. Olga's brother is a world renowned violinist and she is ready to offer the boy the chance of his life but the sisters, especially Ursula (Dench) seems very reluctant to let Andrea and Olga communicate. Ursula who never been married feels deep tenderness, warmth, and longing for Andrea that she has difficulty to hide. Her sister who is very close and compassionate to her sees quite well what goes on but she also understands that some dreams would always stay just the beautiful dreams...
The main reason to see the movie is acting and chemistry between two beloved actresses, both in their 70s and both on the top of their profession. As for the story of two lonely elderly sisters in their coastal home, it was told better in Lindsay Anderson's "Whales in August" (1987) that starred Bette Davis and Lillian Gish, and Anderson's film does not have a young foreign boy to make it compelling and moving. The verbal and silent communication between two sisters as played by Gish and Davis makes the earlier movie a quiet and poignant gem. As for the unrequited tender vulnerable love that comes when one least expects it and that makes the life of an older person heaven and hell at the same time, watch "Death in Venice", the tragic masterpiece by Luchino Visconti.
They don't make them like this anymore.......2007-05-29
Here is a wonderful experience for people who still respect old age.
The director (Mr. Dance) has prepared a feast both for the eye and ear.
My wife and I rented the video and just had to have it in our collection
so as to savor the experience again and share it with our friends. Yes,
we are over seventy. Try this film, you will be delighted.
Great actresses=great movie!.......2007-05-07
Ladies in Lavender features 2 great actresses and a delightful story set on the English coast. The photography is wonderful and this adds to the enjoyment of the movie. Ladies in Lavender is a wonderful way to spend an evening. You will not be disappointed!

It's got a round table, some knights, and a noble warrior who rises to become King Arthur, but everything else about this revisionist legend is pure Hollywood. That's not such a bad thing if you enjoyed Rob Roy, Braveheart, Gladiator, and Troy, and there's some intriguing potential in presenting the "real" Arthur (played by Clive Owen) as a 5th-century soldier of Rome, assigned to defend Roman-imperial England against a hoard of invading Saxons (led by Stellan Skarsgård in hairy villain mode). As revamped history and "archaeological findings" would have us believe, Guinevere (Keira Knightley) is a warrior babe in face-paint and Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) is a nonentity who fades into the woodwork. Never mind! Best to enjoy the harsh, gloomy atmosphere of Irish locations, the ruggedness of Owen and his hearty supporting cast, and the entertaining nonsense of a Jerry Bruckheimer production that strips battle-ready Guinevere down to leather-strap S&M gear while all the men sport full-body armor. Hail to the queen, indeed! --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Great movie - Director's cut a MUST see! .......2007-07-05
The PG-13 version was enjoyable for the eye candy but left one wanting a little more meat.
After partaking of the director's cut (Rated R) - I feel it a shame the audience was cheated out of many great scenes that actually made the story much more believable and actually gave the lead characters more of an arc. The battle scenes are much more graphic (realisitc) so it isn't recommended you watch with the kiddies.
Lancelot's character was less whiney and much more fleshed out in this version. You also understood that Arthur was his family. In addition to that, you understood the underlying attraction he had for Guinevere as we were able to witness him opening up to her and telling her things he probably hadn't told anyone.
I have to heartily disagree with the one reviewer who thought Clive and the lead villains were forced or wrong.
Clive is...well Clive. He is bigger than any role out there and plays any character to perfection. Unfortunately, his leading ladies tend to come across as amateurs in their field when playing opposite his strong screen presence *see Angelina Jolie in Beyond Borders* I do love how Arthur remained firm and never swayed into disbelieving his God, although he was surrounded by those who mocked God and by selfish Phariseeical types who hid behind "religion" using it as a weapon of dominance. At the end, Arthur stated he never shared their "fate" not "faith" as others have stated.
The lead villain's quiet and menacing behaviour was pitch perfect! In order to win wars and lead a savage army of thousands, you would have to be smart, methodical and barbaric all in one, evoking fear in the men around you and in those you were reportedly about to conquer.
To see the contrast of how each leader commanded their army was a great study in and of itself. The Saxon villain commanded and lead evoking fear and terror among his men (hence the outcome), whereas Arthur commanded with wisdom, the allowance of free will (creating reverence and loyalty among his men and new followers) and with compassion (no man or woman left behind). Sounds like my kind of hero! I thought both actors made the movie - hands down!
The battle scenes were awesome (and I hate the word awesome) but it was! The sword-for-sword combat was GREAT! I found myself rewinding some of the battle scenes several times for the swordsmanship. Again NOT for the kiddies!
Guinevere's war costume was absolutely ridiculous, regardless of any historical facts that indicate the original warriors wore only body paint. It cheezed the movie to see her in that leather belt bandeau getup. Other than that, the other characters' costuming was REALLY great!
Ultimatly, I would highly recommend the Director's cut. Great action, a more complete storyline and simply a much more entertaining film overall!
CHECK YOUR HISTORY THEN GET OVER IT.......2007-07-05
I love this film. The Director's Cut is too violent, so I purchased the PG13 theatrical version. The music and everything is great. Please understand that this is NOT a retelling of the cute fantasy story that is really based upon myths created about 600 years after Arthur lived. My wife is Irish and a historian and really understands this era. I have seen many recent docs on the so-called Arthur legend and was very delighted to find out that this guy really did exist. Those who are having a problem reconciling the fantasy with the reality, please try to get over it. This movie sticks closly to what I have read about the real Arthur. Those who had a problem with the costume Keira wore during the battle seen - check your ancient celtic history. These great warriors actually painted themselves blue and fought naked. There was an incredible amount of detail that was faithful to the historical research done for this film. And, no, Arthur was NOT betrayed by his wife either. That was a romantic story invented in about 1100 a.d. I love this movie, the characters, the good against evil. I love seeing what it might have really been like.
Good Story Idea - Bad execution (acting).......2007-07-03
Good story idea. Good FX. Great supporting cast. Suspect acting by main actors. Clive is forcing the part. Keira is strictly eye-candy and the guy who played the lead Saxon was awful. If you go into the movie with that in mind you'll enjoy it. Soundtrack gets 4 stars.
The Quintessential King Arthur.......2007-06-28
This movie delivers what I always wanted from other film versions of King Arthur, the idealist's story. The nemesis of idealism is betrayal and that is the story here. Love, which replaces "Merlin's Magic" in this film is of the sort that comes from living for a greater good and practicing selflessness, not a romantic affair with Guinevere. Fuqua captured the grace and growing depth of Arthur's journey beautifully.
As someone who avoids action movies, I found the battle depictions to be as essential to the story as any of the dialogue. They were not gore-fests but smart battle scenes that gave us a glimpse of the brutality of the times and the unique characters involved.
Antoine Fugua made a beautiful movie and Clive Owen was the perfect thoughtful Arthur. In fact the entire cast was great.
The Director's Cut IMHO is the better version.
Long Live The King.......2007-06-08
this movie is pretty good. it has some very good battle scenes in it. this movie is about the story of the untold story of king Arturs life. if you watch the movie you'll understand on what i'm talking about. it's a very good movie.

This adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley's sprawling and perennially popular book, whose retelling of the Arthurian legends focused on the role of powerful females, compresses a wealth of mysticism, family intrigue, and bloody swordplay into three hours. While the plot can meander slowly and can sometimes seem, well, mystifying, the work of three notable actresses holds the production together, and the numerous complications do eventually get resolved. As Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, Anjelica Huston endeavors to perpetuate the old religion as pagan Britain comes into contact with Christianity. The scheming Morgause, played to evil perfection by Joan Allen, conspires to her own ends. And Avalon priestess Morgaine, played by Julianna Margulies, travels the heroine's journey, overcoming tragedies, injustice, and all manner of obstacles in her duty to both "the goddess" and her younger brother, King Arthur. Although the action lags at times, the production is quite lavish for a made-for-television feature and the film is ultimately entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara

mists of avalon.......2007-07-02
the movie is somewhat off from the book, but i still love it!! i have always enjoyed the myths and legends about king arthur (even though it always goes back to lacalot and genivere). this is actually one of the better book/movies that i have seen/read about king arthur-and it takes a while to read the book-trust me, i actually have not made it all the way through the book yet.
Flawed pearl.......2007-06-07
It has good actors, yet it doesn't satisfy.
Maybe it is because it was made for TV and not even pay cable. The characters do not match the book.
Morgause, for instance, in the book starts off as a teenager, and is married young to Lot of Orkney. In the book she is played by an actress in her thirties. This kills a lot of her motivations.
Dissapointing.
Bland on every level.......2007-06-07
I read the book almost twenty years ago, but barely remember it. I realize this movie was made for TV, but it is so empty. It looks good enough, but it has no soul. Maybe the novel's length confounded the script, which stifled some usually good actors. Made for TV doesn't have to be this bland.
Mysts of Avalon.......2007-05-28
This movie is a definite MUST add to the Excaliber, Merlin,Etc fans dvd collections.
By the Book!!!.......2007-05-28
As a HUGE fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley, who wrote the novel, when I saw the movie, I was just STUNNED at how well it stuck to the book. It was like watching my mind reading the book all over again.
The movie (AND the novel, which you MUST read) portrays the factual, NOT fictional events that took place during the Era of the Christian, Anglo Saxon Crusades against the Druids, and other pagans of the land.
Ms. Huston, who portrayed Vivienne, Lady of the Lake, was PHENOMENOL.
As was the actress who portrayed Morgaine (Morgan, Morgan Le Fey, Morgana, and many other names she is known by in legend), the sister of King Arthur.
The movie brilliantly weaves the story about the WOMEN behind the throne, and puts King Arthur, Merlin, and Lancelot in more or less supporting roles, albeit powerful ones as well.
But the way this story is told, will leave you breathless.
A MUST SEE.
