Norman Granz is one of the most important non-musicians in the history of jazz and no one has made a greater contribution to the staging, recording and filming of jazz concerts. This series of performances from the prestigious Montreux Jazz FestivalTM now makes a part of this legacy available on dvd for the first time. Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie Orchestra. This concert is the perfect example of how to "swing". Customer Reviews:
Great performance, poor video quality........2007-05-25
I enjoyed the performances on this video. Ella performs with the mastery of a veteran. However, be aware that the video quality is not the best, being shot using 70's video technology. Also, the title implies that she performs with Count Basie, but it actually is the Count Basie Orchestra sans Basie.
Inquiry.......2007-01-21
Someone had indicated a desire to see these two icons in other footage. I had watched a documentary on PBS of Ella, and there was some live footage of her and Basie at Ronnie Scott's in London. Haven't found that yet, but if anyone knows how to get it, I think we'd be all over it. When she started into her scatting behind the blues riffs the band created, I couldn't help but laugh and cheer with joy. That's why we play and love this music.
Classic performance.......2007-01-14
OK, the Count is on a handful of numbers (if I'm not mistaken, his health was beginning to deteriorate), the band wasn't at its most fiery persuasive, the video transfer leaves something to be desired (though the sound is superb) and this isn't the mellow Ella of the Chick Webb days. But hell's bells, for about the same price as any Ella cd you get well over an hour of one of the finest performers ever, and, frankly, an Ella in very good fettle. The 'old' Ella, like the 'old' Sarah Vaughan, was a force to behold and treasure and, remember, she was one to utterly take over a performance, lead the band, and raise the roof -- as she does here. There just aren't that many good performance dvd's of these two greats and we simply have to hope that more are dug up. In the meantime, add this one to your desert island jazz vocalist collection.
Fantastic LIVE Ella!!!.......2006-01-24
First thing it seems that most who have reviewed this DVD don't know that this was also released on LP and it tells you that Basie isn't on all the cuts! Duh..! so the title isn't misleading...
This is one Fantastic Live concert from Miss Fitzgerald who swings like no other!! Ella was in Great Voice and her scatting was AMAZING!!! and the Basie band just SWINGS!! This is a concert every Fitzgerald fan should own!!
TRY IT...YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!!!.......2005-06-08
I had the distinct pleasure of attending all of the Jazz Festivals that Ella appeared at (every summer),in Europe, from 1979 - 1980. She NEVER deviated from her excellent renditions of not only Jazz, but also when interpring current works of the periods. Ella had the most flawless intonation, musicianship, phrasing and clarity of voice, above and beyond ANY other female Jazz singer. Witness her set with her trio (Paul Smith, Pinao, Keter Betts, Bass and, of course, Tommy Flanagan on Piano. One major flaw mars this DVD. Count Basie played only ONE number with her. Paul Smith handled his chores. Even without Basie at the piano, combination of Ella and the band was also flawless. The other downside, although minor, was the absolutely shoddy camera work. Other than that....what a "treasure." This DVD was an absolute pleasure for me to relive those magical and wonderful moments that she never failed to provide to her audiences world-wide.

Another Great Ella Concert!.......2007-02-05
Here's another treasure of Ella's! I highly recommend this DVD, Ella again displaying her gifts, a nice mixture of swing\jazz, ballads and two current songs of 70's and some amazing scatting!!!
Ella is on Fire .......2006-02-25
This is Ella at her later best, If you never saw Ella live during the 70's and 80's here is your chance! Albeit short it is very good, Ella's later years I think she was more creative especially with her scatting. I highly recommend, it's probably less money than price of the original ticket for the performance, Everlasting Ella Fitzgerald. Jerry in Seattle
A great concert!.......2006-01-25
This showcases how even in her later years Ella was a master of jazz, improvisation and communication through musical jazz. I wish the DVD were longer; but the quality of Ella's work is worth the price. The Tommy Flanagan Trio does an excellent job of accompanying Ella as they always did. I would recommend this DVD for Ella fans and for fans of jazz in general.
