Amazon.com essential video
Thanks to an extraordinary, delicately balanced performance by Peter Sellers, Being There received mixed reviews during its theatrical release in 1979, but has since become a celebrated comedy with a loyal following. It's one of the most unusual black comedies ever made, simply because it stretches a simple premise over 130 minutes of straight-faced, strangely compelling commentary on politics, media, and celebrity in media-savvy America. Adapted by Jerzy Kozinsky from his own novel, the movie's about a simple-minded, middle-aged gardener who, after a lifetime of seclusion and safety in a Washington, D.C. townhouse, gets his first exposure to reality beyond the walls of his sheltered existence. His only reference to the world is through his childlike addiction to television, and when a chance encounter brings him into the inner fold of a dying billionaire (Melvyn Douglas), he suddenly finds himself the toast of Washington's political elite. His simple phrases about gardening are misinterpreted as anything from economic predictions to sage political advice, and under the sharp direction of Hal Ashby, Sellers has the audacity to take this comedic conceit to its logical extreme. Being There is not for all tastes--especially not for those who don't appreciate comedic subtlety. But as a showcase for the daring genius of Peter Sellers, this is a classic movie in a category all its own. --Jeff Shannon

Yes, yes, yes..........2007-07-04
I can't believe it but somehow this movie got right by me, and today, 07/04/07 I finally caught the dvd.
A masterpiece, and Sellers at his finest. I wept, I smiled, and I loved...I expect that's what they all had in mind.
The dvd has its choppy, clinky moments but one can overlook them...
A victory for Peter Sellers.......2007-06-20
After learning the Biography of Peter Sellers, I think I understand why he wanted to do this odd ball comedy, that sort of mocked his real life, or how he felt about it. While it was meant to be part of the subtle humor in the end, that Chauncy Gardener (really Chance) was being consider as a presidential candidate, that humor rather became a bad joke which maybe helps explain how a young Bush could get into office.
I loved Sellers as the fumbling chief inspector, who was a genius playing a fool mistaken for a genius, where our commander in chief would be.... Well, I was glad Amazon had this movie. It's meaning is somewhat deeper I think, if you also know more of Sellers' biography, or so that's my take on it, and why I gladly bought it.
brillant writing.......2007-06-15
BRILLIANT writing and food for thought in this crazy mixed up world of ours. Refreshing, fun, hilarious and thought provoking. A must have.
A Masterpiece.......2007-06-13
Jerzy Kozinski's brilliant novel is brought to life in a nearly flawless adaptation. Peter Sellers' finest moment as an actor comes about by his playing a completely blank slate, a man who makes no decisions himself, but rather floats along the river of life, periodically spewing quotes and catchphrases he's gleamed from television, all the while being mistaken for a messianic genius by all who encounter him.
One could argue about what the true meaning of the film is. Is Chance someone to look up to? A sort of idiot-savant guru?
Or is he merely a comic foil used to bring to light the foolishness associated with "cults of personality"? A disgusting byproduct of a media-saturated culture?
Either way, the film is a treasure.
Sweet Satire.......2007-06-07
Peter Sellers stars as Chance, a learning disabled man who is evicted by lawyers from his landlord's estate after his benefactor dies. Simple, yet dignified, his only recourse is to leave with nothing but his umbrella and a suitcase with his sparest belongings. He comes across tough neighborhoods asking people for food and a place to stay with a garden until he has a minor accident where a limousine backs up into his leg. Passenger Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine) is so taken in by him, she offers to bring him to a hospital. Seeming so innocent, she takes him instead to their estate where her husband tycoon, Ben (Melvyn Douglas) is bedridden with a blood disease often associated with children. Knowing nothing much more than what he sees on television and his own gardening skills, Chance (renamed Chauncey Gardener by his own conversational mishaps) talks about seasons and gardening growth until he meets the President of the United States (Jack Warden) who visits Ben seeking his economic advice. Once able to impress the President, everyone (including a television audience) thinks they're hearing profound financial advice from an inside man. In the meantime, Eve becomes infatuated with someone whom she only half knows to rejuvenate her life from her older, sick husband; while the rest of the world tries to figure out the identity of this new, stellar personality.
`Being There' is so sweet it takes off any of the cynical edge of the satire. Hardly plausible, the actors and script do well enough to suspend our disbelief, nevertheless. The movie is quirky and innovative for its time. Afterall, when the world waits to hear each work (literally) uttered from Chance's mouth, we know that they had first dibs before 'Forrest Gump'. Shirley MacLaine and Peter Sellers show a diversity in their acting range that is genuine and refreshing.

disappointed.......2007-07-08
I expected a documentary type film with an emphasis on scholarly discussion of the topic -- something that could be a springboard for further research and discussion. Instead it was more like something that Michael Moore would produce. Flemming is not Michael Moor, and he shouldn't try to be. What is the point of putting christians on camera and having them make embarrassing statements by asking them leading questions? All of us in the United States are surrounded by christians. We know what they'll say. As much as I disagreed with the headmaster of the christian school, I thought he was correct to terminate the interview and walk away. It would have been much more interesting had he or someone of his ilk been informed of the purpose of the film and invited to participate with historians and other credentialed people. Maybe he would not have participated, but I think there are those who would welcome the opportunity. My recommendation to the producers is to do the film again, and produce a work that can be used by intelligent people for as a learning experience. This effort misses the mark.
Fails to live up to the title..........2007-07-07
Of the nine or 10 chapters of this presentation, only three actually address the title contention. The rest is either a rehash of the scriptural account of Jesus' life (The first three chapters) or a demonstration of how little most present-day Christians know of the subject beyond what they have learned from their respective churches (the last three chapters).
On the other hand, if you fit this description, then you really do need to see the middle three chapters. I have spent years studying the archaaeology/anthropology/history of that era in that region, and this fifteen minute segment provides an accurate summary of the results of that study. If you are starting from scratch, this paints an overall landscape that you can use to fill in bookshelves full of expansion and detail if it interests you. If you already have that bookshelf, then you will be disappointed at how much supporting information is only hinted at or just completely left out. I would have preferred that the time devoted to exposing the darker side of current Christianity have been used to flesh out the information presented in support of the title.
This DVD will definitely startle the believer who is just starting to expand his horizons, but at the same time be disappointing because too much of the presentation was basically "filler" that didn't contribute to the stated subject.
short but concise.......2007-07-07
a wonderful documentary asking some very basic questions that most christians will fail to answer. if you grew up christian, you owe it to yourself to watch this video and see how much you actually know about your religion. shorter than i expected in length, it ended just as it was picking up steam.
More history, please.......2007-06-30
Although I enjoyed the film, I felt that it did not delve deeply enough into the various legends and myths which were obvious grist for the christ sham. I was hoping that this would be a more extensive and exhaustive study of the origins of the myth, the growth of it, and perhaps even an examination of the dysfunctional psychology behind the need for religion or god.
disappointing documentary.......2007-06-27
I was looking forward to an entertaining and instructional documentary and it was to some degree. The documentary was factual regarding religion and the bible, but I felt Brian Flemming made a few segments too personal. Further, many of the jokes went overboard and would make most people cringe. I did like the interviews, especially those with Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins.

It is about the actor rather than the tricks.......2007-06-27
I do not show this to my grandson any more. it is more about a man who appears to be stupid, who does crazy things to try to b e funny. This is not the image of a construction worker that I want him to see. The trucks are good, though, if you can get past, "I shouldn't have done that!"
Fun and Interesting.......2007-06-05
My 3 year old boy loves this series... and I've even gleaned some interesting facts too! My daughters( 2 & 5)watch the dvds also, and it's funny and interesting enough to keep their attention, too.
Son still likes them at age 5!.......2007-06-01
We started collecting this series when my son was 2 and now have all the DVDs. Some parts are dorky, and he is generally a discerning viewer, but he has grown up with "Dave" and it has gotten us through lots of sniffly nights, long car rides and plane flights, etc. etc. And he has learned A LOT in spite of the dorkiness. Terrific videos.
IF YOU LOVE TRUCKS.......2007-05-14
my 3 year old son LOVES this video--and so does his 4 year old cousin. he is not that "into" tv in general but he loves this. he would rate it 5 stars for sure--but not loving trash truck like he does, i can only go to 4. it is informative and has a man and woman working the trucks--any child that likes truck will love.
Not as good as the others.......2007-02-27
My 22 month old son loves Dave, but these videos with Becky are hard to watch. They are just too campy. We enjoy the ones where it is just Dave by himself like the Train, Plane, Bus, Tractor etc... Sorry, Becky - Dave's the man.

At first glance, René Clair might seem an odd match for Agatha Christie's mystery thriller Ten Little Indians, but his buoyant touch is exactly what is missing from so many overly solemn remakes. Ten strangers gather for a mysterious gathering on a secluded island. It turns out to be a farewell party, for they all have been sentenced to die for crimes in their past by a self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner who may be one of them. One by one, the guests are systematically dispatched in the manner described in the lyrics of the children's rhyme "Ten Little Indians," while the survivors nervously eye one another, splintering into tenuous alliances until the next murder throws suspicion on someone new. The terrific cast of character actors has a ball with Dudley Nichols's witty script. The flamboyant sparring of Barry Fitzgerald (whose paternal Irish lilt takes a sinister dimension) and Walter Huston is almost upstaged by Roland Young's deadpan drollery. Romantic leads Louis Hayward and June Duprez come off as arch and stiff in august company that includes a sinisterly detached Judith Anderson, a dotty and distracted C. Aubrey Smith, and a hilariously flippant Mischa Auer. The story has been remade numerous times under the title of Christie's novel, Ten Little Indians, but never as well. Clair's effervescent, lively little gem is a fatal drawing-room comedy with a body count and a surreal mood of doom. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
And Then There Were None.......2007-06-21
French director Rene Clair populates this quaint but ingenious whodunit with a wonderful assortment of old-world characters, including Judge Quinncannon (Barry Fitzgerald), Doctor Armstrong (Walter Huston), and General Sir John Mandrake (C. Aubrey Smith). You'll feel as uneasy watching this as the guests themselves, and equally baffled as to the whos and whys of it all. Great vintage fun.
Pleasing Diversion.......2007-06-12
While not quite up to the quality of the novel upon which it is based, this little film starring Barry Fitzgerald is entertaining nonetheless. Because of the problem of bringing such a novel to the screen, the production team found it necessary to change certain of the elements of the novel. It is up to the viewer to determine if they did so effectively or not in each case.
mystery murder.......2007-06-03
nice movie good actors (judite anderson whaiting for rebecca)
but the dvd copie is not very good
Horrible adaptation.......2007-06-01
My family and I waited eagerly for our DVD to arrive. We immediately loaded the DVD and began to watch, anticipating a movie at least almost as exciting as the book. Instead of 96 minutes of suspense we were bogged down with what seemed to be hours upon hours of uninspiring drivel. This is one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. The acting was horrible! I know some home movies that are more suspenseful. Overall we see character after character die while we the viewer could care less. One can only wonder, what would this movie have been in the hands of Hitchcock. Unless you have money to burn don't waste your money (even a dollar or two on this horrible adaptation of a wonderful book. Play a board game with the kids and fight, it will be immensely more enjoyable.
Good movie. But they should have kept a little closer with the book........2007-04-18
I had to read this book in high school. I never was able to read it then though so I bought it years later. The book is really good. And so is the movie. My only complaint about the movie is that they didn't stay very close to the book with it. The ending in this movie is completely different than the ending in the book. Some of the characters names aren't even the same and neither are their "crimes". Personally, while this is a good movie and I do enjoy watching it, I like the book better. The movie has a happy ending to it where the book has a more tragic one.
I would definitely recommend that anyone who hasn't read the book should. Anyone who is thinking about buying this movie, if you haven't already seen it and you haven't already read the book, buy the book instead. Read it first. Then come back later and buy the movie.

Over There: Season One is simply a revelation, a new way to look at a drama about a new kind of American war. Told over 13 superb episodes, in which a handful of soldiers go through a great many changes to arrive at their own flawed, beautiful humanity, this series by prolific producer Steven Bochco (NYPD Blue) has nothing to do with the politics or decreasing popularity of the Iraq war. The show is consumed, instead, by the logistics of U.S. troops staying alive from hour to hour against a campaign of masked insurgents, roadside bombs, and clever lures into unforeseen dangers. Many of Over There's most gripping moments are concerned with the fallibility of soldiers trying to decipher the sometimes inscrutable actions of men, women, and children who may or may not be the enemy. It's hard to tell, for example, if the Iraqi man who stepped out of his house to kick a soccer ball with his son is, in fact, grabbing a moment of happiness with his child or trying to deceive the Americans with a false veneer of normalcy. There isn't always a way to be sure of intentions, and the show's major characters are often forced to make split-second judgments fraught with moral ambivalence and potential tragedy.
In the Bochco tradition, individual episodes juggle several storylines that can take an entire season to play out, frequently in unexpected ways. The wounding of a young private named Bo Rider (Josh Henderson) in the series pilot leads to a protracted story of personal valor back home and a showdown with a monstrous father. The embedding of a television journalist with the major characters touches on media spin in the modern age, as well as the phenomenon of hostage-taking in Iraq. The training of more-or-less hapless Iraqi security forces to take over for the Americans does not inspire confidence that the U.S. can get out anytime soon. Issues of infidelity, loneliness, female soldiers in battle, the incompetence of some commanding officers, conflicts between supposed comrades-in-arms, and much else bring a gritty honesty to the show. But it's the striking visuals that take one's breath away: the disorienting perspective from within a truck that's just been shelled, the strange look of a firefight waged almost eyeball-to-eyeball between enemies, with neither side ducking for cover. There's never been an American television show based on a war currently being waged, and Over There certainly makes one realize how much survival in Iraq is an end in itself, far away from ongoing debates about the war's justification. --Tom Keogh
Description
In this ground-breaking new series from Steven Bochco (NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues) "Over There" takes you to the front lines of battle and explores the effects of war on a U.S. Army unit sent to Iraq on their first tour of duty, as well as the equally powerful effects felt at home by their families and loved ones.

So sad it's cancelled..........2007-05-14
I watched every episode of this show. My boyfriend at the time was a Marine deployed to Iraq. It helped a lot to see, even if it was a dramatization and probably somewhat "hollywood", what was going on over there. Anyone who has loved ones in the Middle East will really connect with this show. Unfortunately, I've heard and read opinions from actual Marines and soldiers who didn't care for the show. They are very picky (and rightfully so) that if a movie or show depicting our military is not totally accurate, they usually won't like it.
The characters are so well developed and get better with every episode, and the actors playing them are incredible. This show will keep you interested from the first episode to the untimely last. The series does end abruptly. Obviously, the last episode was written with the intention of a follow-up season and has your usual season finale cliffhanger.
I am disappointed this show was cancelled. I understand it was due to bad ratings (wrong station? HBO might have been better) coupled with the high cost of production, but I've heard rumors there are plans to bring it back. We'll see.
Over There.......2007-05-12
This is the most realistic show of the Iraq war that I have ever seen. I was there in OIF III and this brought back good and sad memories. It is right on the money. All I wish is that there was a second season
Over there.......2007-03-27
This series really hit home with me, my boyfriend is in the Army and when this was on tv he was just out of basic training. We all knew it was more than possible that he was going to go "over there" and it was just a great dipiction of the real thing. He is there now and even though I don't live on a base some of the things are about the same. So i would recommend anyone who has any tie to the military get this just to see how it could be or will be. And I also recommend this for anyone who doesn't have any tie to the military to know what real Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, and any other type of military goes through so we all can be FREE and keep the freedom here!
Great TV Series.......2007-03-09
I had watched all the episodes on FX when it did come on. I just had to watch them again, so I bought the DVD set. I wish there would have been another season of the show.
Over There.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful series which sadly ended with its 13th episode. The scenes are accurate, the uniforms, the weapons. Small delatils, the soliders index their trigger finger when not shooting. Like a WEB Griffen novel you become involved in the individul's lives. I am sorry it didn't continue, but I am glad that I have been able to purchase these excellent DVDs.

Paul Newman's career slipped onto an unstoppable track with Somebody Up There Likes Me, his 1956 biopic about boxer Rocky Graziano. Of course that was his second picture, the first being the oft-joked-about bungle The Silver Chalice. Newman's Method-y intensity and dazzling good looks brought him stardom, and his intelligence and uncommon seriousness as an actor kept his movies interesting, especially as he tackled some of the best roles of the "antihero" era--an era he helped create.
Somebody Up There Likes Me is included in The Paul Newman Collection, a bulging seven-DVD package that shakes out thusly: three late-1950s titles from the beginning of his career, one mid-sixties hit, and three lesser films of the early 1970s. It's by no means a "best of" compilation, being limited to Warners and MGM titles, but it gives a flavor of Newman in his prime time. He got the Graziano role after James Dean died, and his performance is a very busy, post-Brando jumble of tics and mumbles. The movie holds up nicely as a boxing picture, and the location NYC shooting won an Oscar for cinematographer Joseph Ruttenberg (you can see why director Robert Wise got hired to do West Side Story after this). Sal Mineo and Steve McQueen are in the cast as Newman's fellow j.d.s.
The Left-Handed Gun (1958), based on a teleplay by Gore Vidal, is a truly weird, compulsively watchable artifact from the psychological-Western genre. Newman plays Billy the Kid, glowering and grimacing like a rebel without a cause. It's one of those films that has much more to do with the time it was made than the time it is set; also notable as the big-screen debut for stage and TV director Arthur Penn. The Young Philadelphians (1959) is more conventional, an entertaining soap opera about a young lawyer (Newman) with an old-money Philly name but no money, who gets burned by love and decides to connive his way to the top. Young Robert Vaughn snagged an Oscar nomination for a showy turn as an alcoholic society lad.
Harper (1966) is chockfull of kooky mid-Sixties design and Rat Pack patter (courtesy screenwriter William Goldman). But it must be said that Newman is miscast as the melancholic private eye of Ross Macdonald's literary world, here re-imagined as a wisecracking hepcat who mugs his way through a missing-persons investigation. The supporting cast is a weird over-the-hill gang including Lauren Bacall, Janet Leigh, and Shelley Winters. That film's hero, Lew Harper (renamed from Macdonald's "Archer"), returned in 1976's The Drowning Pool, a more bearable if somewhat humdrum whodunit set in New Orleans. Newman's wife, Joanne Woodward, has a supporting part, but the picture is most notable for an early Melanie Griffith nymphet role.
Pocket Money (1972) is one of those only-in-the-seventies movies that pairs Newman with Lee Marvin in a drowsy, nearly plotless comedy. Both actors give elaborate performances: Newman plays a numbskull two-bit cattle broker who takes absolutely everything literally, and Marvin is his buddy in Mexico who signs on for an ill-considered cattle-buying job. One of the credited screenwriters is Terrence Malick, and the movie has a highly eccentric feel for language. Finally, The Mackintosh Man (1973) is one of the periodic duds that director John Huston would crank out in his otherwise starry career, with Newman as a spy on an incomprehensible case in England. The first half is a red herring, and Dominique Sanda (more recently of The Conformist) is out of depth with the English language. It's a bleak film with a kind of grinding fascination, and the Maurice Jarre score is catchy but fatally overused. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:
A sample of (lesser known) Newman.......2007-05-14
Paul Newman is one of the all-time great movie actors with a career that now spans six decades. Among his biggest movies are The Hustler, Hud, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Cool Hand Luke The Verdict, The Color of Money (for which he won the Oscar) and even Cars. None of these movies are in the Paul Newman Collection, which features seven of his second-tier efforts. That does not mean they are bad movies, merely not as big.
In chronological order, the first movie in the set is Somebody Up There Likes Me, a biopic of boxer Rocky Graziano. Directed by Robert Wise (who had previously made one of the best boxing movies ever, The Set-Up), this is an entertaining film of a man successfully wrestling his inner demons to become a success. In one of his earliest roles, Newman is already showing why he a cinema immortal.
The next movie is The Left-Handed Gun, a decent, if unspectacular, version of the Billy the Kid story (the best version of this story is Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid). Newman, as the title character, plays Billy similarly to his Rocky: a self-destructive outlaw. Unlike Graziano, however, Billy never finds redemption through family and friends.
The Young Philadelphians has a more easy-going Newman playing the ambitious Anthony Lawrence who climbs the social and business ladder, often with more than a little ruthlessness. When his best friend is accused of murder, his efforts towards acquittal threaten both his happiness and reputation. This is an entertaining melodrama. A little bonus is seeing a pre-Batman Adam West as a man who is very briefly married to Anthony's mother.
Harper is the first of two Newman movie adaptations of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer novels (the name was changed to continue Newman's string of "H" movies: Hud, Hustler, etc.). This fun private eye story is a real all-star flick: it also stars Janet Leigh, Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner and Shelly Winters. The plot deals with Harper's attempts to find a missing - apparently kidnapped - man; in his search, he unearths all kinds of family scandal. The sequel (and last movie, chronologically) is The Drowning Pool, which transports Harper to New Orleans to help an old flame with a blackmailer. Like most sequels, this is a pale shadow of its predecessor, but it has its moments. It also has Melanie Griffith in one of her earliest roles.
Pocket Money is probably the weakest in the set, an amiable but meandering movie with Newman as a modern day cowboy hired to buy and transport some cattle for a shady businessman. Lee Marvin co-stars as his friend and partner. It's a movie in which the parts just don't seem to fit together all that well.
Finally, there is the Mackintosh Man, a spy flick with Newman as a British agent out to stop a Soviet network inside England that specializes in smuggling people out of the country. While this is an interesting movie, Newman's foray into James Bond territory is a little too serious to be fully enjoyed. From an acting standpoint, this is probably his least compelling role in the set.
There are lots of bonuses with the set, including commentaries on the first four movies; the best of these is William Goldman's amusing and biting track for Harper. On the Amazon rating system, Pocket Money is a low-three stars, The Left Handed Gun, The Mackintosh Man and the Drowning Pool a straight three, and the remainder four stars. As is my practice with boxed sets, I average this out to a high-three stars or low-four, but the extras push it up to a comfortable four stars. You don't get the best or most well-known Newman with this set, but you do get a good sampling of his talent and range.
movie buff.......2007-03-11
I really enjoyed watching theses seven movies the Young Philadelphians, Somebody Up There Likes me and, the Drowning Pool and Harper were amoung my favorite. the Left handed Gun, the Mackintosh Man, and Pocket were good but seemed to be a little slow in parts. I still enjoyed them however, I've always liked Paul Newman, and there are not to many movies,
he has been in that I haven't liked.
The Paul Newman Collection.......2007-03-08
I love this collection. I have some of these on VCR but now I have them all on DVD and I am thrilled.
One of His Best Movies - Some Not So Great.......2007-02-14
"Somebody Up There Likes Me", the movie that made Paul Newman,is included here, along with stylishly dated "Harper", and one of thousands (it seems) movies about Billy the Kid, "The Left-Handed Gun". The others are typically cool Newman movies. A pretty good collection, but I'd still like to see a box set of his classics.
It's about time!.......2007-01-23
I've waited years for the DVD release of my favorite Newman movie, The Young Philadelphians. That opus is a wonderful example of 1950s melodrama with wonderful characters and acting, a joy to watch. Nevertheless, Hollywood for years busied itself with releasing DVDs of every middling new movie and TV series, ignoring quality works like TYP and the Heston/Hayward masterpiece, The President's Lady, which still is not available. For the first time The Young Philadelphians is here on DVD.
Enjoy!
It's time now to release The President's Lady and others of its type!

Ted hires Pat, a private detective (Matt Dillon) to track her down, but Pat ends up falling in love with her too, starting a battle for Mary's heart.
Customer Reviews:
SOME THINGS GET BETTER WITH AGE...THIS IS ONE OF THEM!.......2007-03-05
I went to see this movie in the theater. It was after the first few weeks of release and I had read the reviews and decided to go see what was so funny about Mary. I must admit I wasn't expecting much, but within the first few minutes I found myself smiling and before long bursting out into uncontrolable laughter! This is a funny movie with excellent characters. I have watched it several times now and I think it is funnier with each viewing. I may not get the surprize laughs like the first time around, but Stiller,Dillon,Elliot and especially Lee Evans are hilarious! One of the great comedies of all time!
Cheesey Hijinx.......2006-05-31
"There's Something About Mary" is like many cheesey romantic comedies, except that is has more heart and more big laughs. One of the best aspects about Mary is that she is attracted to the integrity of men and not just their appearance. Ted (Ben Stiller) is an awkward teenager with braces who wins the heart of Mary (Carmen Diaz) when he shows the character and courage to defend her handicapped brother. He then garners a chance to take her to the prom, but a terrible accident cuts off their relationship, and leaves Ted yearning for her even after she moves to Miami. Through a friend, he hires a private investigator, Pat, (Matt Dillon) to find her. A slimeball from the start, he chases Mary himself and attempts to leave Ted in the dust.
"There's Something About Mary" is meant to be in bad taste, but for humor, sometimes it hits and sometimes it misses. Fortunately, it bats at about .750 and manages some grand slams. Mary is truly captivating enough to enable decency, but the treatment of the handicapped is a mixed bag. Special people are a touchtone to the characters, but there are a few cheap jokes involving the handicapped as well. Ben Stiller manages again to play Mr. Ordinary who is thrown into the worst of circumances, like in "Meet the Parents," and remain a nimble and nuerotic presence. It is a fun movie for all its hijinx and even (sometimes especially) the cheese...(including, notably a guest appearance by Chief Cheese, Brett Farve...)
Fantastic.......2006-01-07
This film is hilarious. Well done,
There's something funny about Mary.......2006-01-01
The Farrelly brothers, who gave us Dumb And Dumber, Kingpin, and Me Myself And Irene, direct There's Something About Mary, a movie that stars Ben Stiller (Meet The Parents), Cameron Diaz (The Mask, Gangs Of New York), Matt Dillon (The Outsiders, Crash), Chris Elliot (Groundhog Day, Scary Movie 2), and many others.
Mary is a story about a Rhode Island loser named Ted, played by Stiller, who can't keep his high school dreamgirl Mary, played by the charming Diaz, out of his mind 13 years after their prom date went terribly wrong way before it happened. He hires an obnoxious guy named Patrick, played by Dillon, to spy on her and tell him what she's been up to. Well, Patrick falls for Mary, and decides to move out to Florida where she resides to get to know her, and he does. Ted discovers that Patrick isn't giving him the truth about Mary and goes out to find her himself. It turns out that Mary has many admirers who try to win her heart (or shoes!) besides the lonely Ted. So the movie becomes a race on who can get her first and forever.
It's a silly tale but under the Farrellys direction, it's a surefire laugh-fest all the way through. Expect to see lots of sick humor like a guy giving a dog CPR, or bodily fluids used as toiletries. Also, the characters in Mary are funny by nature. The funniest character of them all is Warren, Mary's handicapped and heavy set brother, who punches people who touch his ears and loves to give piggy back rides.

B-
Shocking in its time.......2005-08-26
Naturally the first of its kind it is very funny. Ted Stroehmann had a slight accident requiring Magda (Lin Shay) to do a little triage. This messes up his prom night with Mary Jensen. Mary moves to is last scene moving to Florida. Later in years he decides to rectify this. Ted heirs a detective, Pat Healy (Matt Dillon), to find Mary. The report is disappointing however he still peruses her and in the process has some interesting experiences. Some will make your hair stand on end. Soon he finds that there is not a clear track as he is one of many admirers.
Will Ted and Marry get together?
Will they want to?
And what about Pat who fell in love also?
Cameron, blue eyed natural blond from California, had already been in ten movies so she was well known at the time of this movie. The script and part fit her well. Off screen she has a sense of humor that could appreciate the sight gags.
Ben Stiller has been in several films before and since he always plays the same character. He has been pigeonholed a sort of modern day bathroom humor slapstick.

Ice Cube has turned his frown upside down with the family-friendly screwball road movie Are We There Yet? We know the actor/rapper can use his trademark scowl to be funny (the Friday and Barbershop series), or to be mean (Boyz in the Hood)--but can he use it to melt kids' hearts? That's the question Are We There Yet? answers with a resounding yes for youngsters in the audience (which will be the lions' share), but it'll probably be an emphatic shrug for the grownups. The contrived plot has Cube playing a wannabe-player (as in ladies' man) and ex-player (as in washed-up minor league baseball star) who now owns a sports memorabilia business. His partner, played by Jay Mohr is just a throwaway, as is the talented Nia Long, the single mom that Cube sets his blinged-out sights on. To try to get in her good graces, he offers to transport her two bratty kids in his pride-and-joy Lincoln Navigator for a joy ride to a distant city where she's attending an emergency business meeting so they can have a New Year's Eve celebration together. This kiddies version of Road Trip and Planes, Trains and Automobiles has its cute moments, but plenty more gross-out moments which will please the kids no end, especially as the Navigator gets more and more trashed. Suffice it to say they all learn about each others' good sides and hearts are suitably melted all around--until after the credits roll, then you'll probably forget about the whole thing.--Ted Fry

It's an okay movie.......2007-05-12
Not a bad movie. Not a great movie, but not bad either.
Not What I Expected.......2007-05-07
We saw the move, "Are We There Yet?" in the theater and really enjoyed it, so we decided to purchase this DVD. It would be a good movie for kids if not for the swearing and bad attitudes of the children in the movie. We probabbly will not watch the DVD again (at least not with kids).
Family Friendly Fun.......2007-04-12
There is nothing great in this film, but it does have its moments and is pleasing entertainment. Ice Cube believably loses his bad-boy image, Nia Long is always both pleasing to watch and believable in this limited role, and the child actors are cute, but they always look like they are acting. These same two kids again play brother and sister later with Eddie Murphy in Disney's "The Haunted Mansion."
The script is cliche-ridden and predictable, and the direction is pedestrian at best; however, the film is also enjoyable in spite of these flaws. We get a typical guy all hot for a woman whom he discovers later has kids that are resentful of anyone trying to take their father's place. This "road" story has Ice Cube, hoping to get in the good graces of the very hot Nia Long, take the kids to see her in Vancouver, Canada where she is working because her lame ex-husband has bailed out on having the kids (again . . . ). The trio start off hating each other, but end up feeling like a family before all is said and done.
Some good moments: the slow, painful distruction of Cube's Lincoln Navigator, the wacko deer, and the good-intentioned, but easily fooled truck driver. Again, this is harmless family fun entertainment even with it's "been there, done that" feel.
mind-numbingly awful.......2007-04-01
In some sort of alternate universe where Ice Cube does ridiculously lame hack family feel good movies comes "Are We There Yet", possibly the worst movie to come out of 2005. The acting, plot, and overall concept is just so god-awful, a better title would've been "Please, Please God, is it Done Yet?"
*ICE CUBE* does it again.......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed the movie. I think that it is a movie that the whole family can enjoy. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. Definitly watch it with the kids.

"Pilot Dave" Hood, cocreator and host of the There Goes a... series of children's videos, straps himself into a variety of flying machines in There Goes a Plane. Riding shotgun on a stunt plane that loops and whooshes to a dizzying degree, Hood does a lot of yelping, but he also succinctly and entertainingly describes exactly why airplanes defy gravity. (Adults can learn, too.) We learn the workings of passenger jets, and how the airline industry functions in various other ways, from selling passenger tickets to getting one's luggage to its proper destination. The plentiful comic moments include the sight of Hood falling onto a suitcase conveyor belt.
In There Goes a Train, engineer Dave shows us around old and new trains, takes control of a freight train going top speed, and introduces us to steam engines, locomotives, and an old caboose. Plenty to see, lots of location shooting, big action for tykes interested in moving machines. Dave's banter might go over the heads of some of the target audience, but you can ignore that.
There Goes a Bus is an information-jammed journey into the secret lives of the thundering buses that thrill us when we're little. The beloved yellow and black ones are only the beginning: besides city buses, cross-country Greyhound types, and touristy double-deckers, we also get a lift on an articulated number (the kind that bends) and--the traffic stopper--a bus that, when driven into water, becomes a boat. Stops for maintenance and under-the-hood investigations keep the wheels going round and round, and rap sessions with a bus-driving honcho buckle us in for the long haul.

This Movie Has Disturbing Situations..........2007-02-28
I bought these movies based on reviews and was puzzled when I noticed my 3 year old son was afraid of the green choo choo train. I couldn't imagine why until I replayed the movie and saw the scene where the green train was headed toward a woman stranded, yes, stranded!, in her vehicle on the train tracks. As she waved her arms in panic and stares at the oncoming train, she screams stop! I cannot imagine how this fosters a safe feeling for children unless you are into the scare tactic approach to teaching.
I was really upset and offended that this was put into a kid friendly show. Sadly, I do not recommend this DVD. The idea of it is great, but the delivery was more than poor. I will return the others I purchased.
Hard to beat........2007-02-27
If your kid loves things that go then there's a good chance they'll like this video. It's slightly campy and a little dated but oh man you can't pry my son away from the bus video. Classic Dave. Unlike some videos (like the ones with the martians or whatever visiting to show the kids the garbage truck- ick), these you can actually watch WITH your kid and not totally fruit out.
there goes a train.......2007-02-26
I bought this dvd for my grandson because he loves airplanes and trains. Too much commentary and very little action shots of trains and airplanes. It did not keep his interest, a total waste of money.
love it.......2007-01-17
my son watches this repeatedly
at first he only wanted to watch the train section, then he went to buses and finally to airplanes.
Fortunately after watching the airplane section he was willing to keep his seat belt one in the plane (just a few days before watching it - he would not keep the seat belt on!)
I highly recommend this
Great DVD.......2007-01-15
This is a great dvd. I bought it for my daughter (3) and my nephews (4&5) and everyone loves it. My 18 month old even enjoys it. The dvd is informative and very fun to watch.

Is There Life Out There? DVD.......2007-01-11
The product came in a timely manner with no defects.
YES SHE CAN ACT AND SING.......2006-11-20
SHE'S HAD A HIT TV SHOW FOR 6 YEAR'S NOW CALLED " REBA " AND HAS HEADLINED ON BROADWAY AS ANNIE OAKLY ,AND PRAISED BY MUCH HARSHER PEOPLE NAMELY NEW YORKER'S. YES SHE CAN ACT AND MAKES A LIVING DOING IT. " REBA YOU GO GIRL " *****
Wow.......2006-10-25
This was such an excellent movie, that would NOT be the same without Reba McEntire, in my opinion, one of the best actresses out there. Awesome storyline, awesome actors/actresses, 5 stars.
REBA CANNOT ACT!!!.......2005-11-05
Only die hard Reba fans will give this movie a five star rating. If they are honest they will realize that she just doesn't have what it takes to be a thespian. She overplays everything and its obvious she does NOT know how to deliver a line!!!!! REBA CANNOT ACT!!!!! Her tremendous ego thinks she can do everything but suffice it so say that she ruins a good story by her amateurish foray into the acting medium. She needs to stick to singing.
Reba Beginnings.............2005-10-24
Although Reba was taking one of her first stabs at acting, it's obvious that she has such amazing potential. It's apparent that she has great passion for her music, and was able to translate that into film. This was a stepping stone for Reba and although she'd already come so far is music, this movie shows the start of all she has become today. I recommend this movie to anyone who feels that they've missed their chance or has dreams that seem unreachable. A very inspiring movie!
