Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel is a record of the final performance of the band's 2003 world tour, taped on December 12 before a small London crowd. The venue was an inspired choice. As a performance space, the Gothic church is at once both intimate and grand, a perfect mirror for the band's odd but cogent mix of bar-band boogie and classically tinged prog rock. The 21-song concert includes eight selections from The Well's on Fire, Procol Harum's 2003 studio album. Most of the newer songs are strong (particularly "The Question" and "An Old English Dream"), and the band, having honed its arrangements to a T, does an exceptional job of blending its recent music with its older material. Singer-pianist Gary Brooker and organist Matthew Fisher, both original members, lead the way through time-honored favorites like "Homburg," "Conquistador," and their immortal 1967 hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The DVD's spacious but never murky 5.1 surround mix puts you right in the church with the audience. As usual, the DTS tracks surpass the Dolby Digital soundtrack, but with this disc the DTS format proves especially critical to an appreciation of the Union Chapel's gorgeous acoustics. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars Great concert.......2007-07-03

My husband and I are long time Procol Harum fans - this is a wonderful concert dvd worth the month. We didn't skip around - we watched from the beginning to end. Can't say that about some of our other concert dvds. If you like this group put the money out for this dvd!

5 out of 5 stars Procol Harum Live at the Union Chapel.......2005-07-27

I have been a long time Procol fan, and this DVD is a godsend. It has a decent mixture of songs from early through their most recent CD. All are played well, the sound balance is excellent and all musicians can be heard in the surround mix. The best part of the whole program was the third verse in "A Whiter Shade of Pale". It is on the sheet music, but I have never heard it sung, and it is here in all it's glory. Now, I have heard rumors that there is a fourth verse around, but no verification that anyone else has ever heard it. This combination of musicians have been the longest lasting of late and the strongest version of PH, almost matching the group of the first four recordings. Buy it, you will listen to it often. Shine On, Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher!

5 out of 5 stars this is the one!.......2005-07-03

If you've been looking for that perfect Procol Harum DVD, look no further. This is the one! The venue is intimate and the cathedral-like chapel is the perfect backdrop for the band's best-loved works. The production is altogether superb on both audio and video. (There are even alternate camera locations on some tracks, like one from the back of the hall.) The three-part concert is relatively long but you won't notice it, the performances move right along. The band performs a dozen songs from the 60's and 70's (and not necessarily the ones you might guess). They play another eight songs from their latest album, The Well's on Fire, which freshens things up. Gary Brooker's voice is in fine shape and he is playing on a *real* piano this time out. One highlight is the song "As Strong As Samson" from the mid-70's which the've reworked a bit, giving guitarist Geoff Whitehorn room to stretch in the middle. He and bassist Matt Pegg play off well against one another. You've got to see how they do the gull sounds at the beginning of "A Salty Dog." Yes, AWSOP includes the rarely heard third verse. And don't miss the shot of Keith Reid in the audience toward's the end of the main show. All in all, a very rewarding experience. Savor it! (Now, if only they could book a gig with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra..... )

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Hammond B3 sound.......2005-06-15

Procol Harum is one of the legendary classic rock bands of the last century.
Their magnificent all of time superhit "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" is considered as my favorite song for many decades. I read that John Lenon was amazed when hearing the song for the first time for its extraordinary lyrics and the superb church organ B3 sound. After those long years they performed this concert at London's Union Chapel. And what a concert!!! The music surrounds you magicaly and even songs which are not so popular or known to me are amazing.
Gary Brooker is like no one else...Warm, greatly performing, and highly carismatic. The great organ player Matthew Fisher is unbelievable...He's The soul of the band, shy and highly talented giving the band its exclusive taste.
This DVD is a real document for a great band sharing on making modern music history.

3 out of 5 stars Procol Harum - 'Live At The Union Chapel' (Red Distribution).......2005-06-04

Even though I've never been a Procol Harum fan,I thought I'd take the time to check out this music DVD.I sort of liked what they had to offer, their own style of British progressive.'Live At...' was recorded at the Union Chapel,a Gothic church in London.Gig took place on December 12,2003 which was the last date of a lengthy tour.Twenty-one songs, including,of course their three U.S.,hits "Homburg","Conquistador" and their signature tune "Whiter Shade Of Pale"(which has now been covered by over 200 bands). Also liked hearing "Salty Dog" and "Whiskey Train" once again.Didn't realize until now,but at least a handful of the cuts are from their most recent CD of all new material,2003's 'The Well's On Fire' such as "An Old English Dream","This World Is Rich","Every Dog Will Have It's Day" and "The Question".Notice these tunes sound almost as decent as their old stuff.A feat rarely done anymore,by any long-running ensemble.Line-up:Gary Brooks-keyboards&vocals,Keith Reed-lyricist,Matthew Fisher-organ,Geoff Whitehorn-guitar,Matt Pegg-bass and Matt Brzezicki-drums.Check it out.

Description

British rock legends Procol Harum are captured here at their finest, in concert at London's Union Chapel. The band perform tracks from their latest album, The Well's On Fire, alongside many of their classics including Pandora's Box, Homburg, Conquistador, A Salty Dog, Quite Rightly So and the rarely-heard full-length version of the immortal A Whiter Shade Of Pale. It was the last night of a tour that had taken them from London through Europe, Japan and North America and back again to London, and the band celebrated with a truly magical performance.

Procol Harum are one of the select group of acts who had a No.1 hit with their first single. A Whiter Shade Of Pale continues to hold a fascination for all ages, and was recently voted into the all-time top ten of UK No.1's in a poll to celebrate 50 years of the UK charts. Beyond this, the band has had a string of successful singles and albums on both sides of the Atlantic.

This Special Edition is the only place to get the CD companion to this remarkable performance from Procol Harum.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance and Recording.......2006-04-17

This is one magnificent concert, wherein drummer Mark Brzezicki and guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, after more than 10 years with the group, (in my opinion) finally learned to do justice to Procol Harum's music. The musicianship throughout is outstanding, especially the interaction between Whitehorn and PH founding member, Hammond organist Matthew Fisher. The sound engineering is a revelation, and when played loud through a good sound system, this disk comes very close to matching the HUGE Dynamic Procol Harum Live sound from its Classic period, something that none of the studio albums or previous concert recordings has ever achieved.

The classic tunes sound fantastic - this is my favorite rendition of "Conquistador" anywhere - and the songs from The Well's On Fire, their 2003 CD, have been incredibly improved, so much more ALIVE!, than on that album. Standouts are "An Old English Dream," "The Question" and especially "The Signature", the exciting Fisher-composed instrumental.

Though the CD is a 60 minute excerpt of the entire concert, and I would have made a couple of substitutions, all the best tunes are there and its sound quality is excellent. (I've had an opportunity to hear a ripped copy from the DVD and this CD sounds better). I'm glad the CD has been made available because I'm planning on sending one to my local Classic Rock radio station and requesting some well-deserved airplay for "The Signature."

5 out of 5 stars Superlative DVD.......2006-02-26

The only "rip-offs" are by the people (reviewers) extracting the audio by using software. No one is "forcing" anyone to repuchase the DVD. It is a bonus for new purchasers, or repurchasers. Since when were CDs made part of DVD packages? This DVD is dramatic and powerful, with an ideal mix of Procol Harum classics and new songs, rich in lyrical quality with unmatchable musicianship, in a venue in keeping with this great British band.

2 out of 5 stars This re-release is an affront to Procol fans.......2005-09-23

The low rating is for the manner of re-release only. This is nothing but a brazen attempt by Eagle to get PH fans to buy the dvd a second time in order to get the cd version which, based on the information above, is only available with the dvd and cannot be purchased separately. If you are a Procol fan what choice do you have but to purchase the dvd a second time? I understand they are re-releasing Jethro Tull's Isle of Wight dvd w/ the cd also, but at least in that case you can buy each separately.

I have the dvd and it is fine, I have no complaints with it at all. A 4 star dvd by itself.
