This superlative concert video is a godsend for fans of Electric Light Orchestra, since ELO's Zoom tour was cut short, sadly, because of lackluster ticket sales. Judging from this tour-opening performance (in May 2001, at the CBS studios in Los Angeles), those canceled gigs were a major loss, because Jeff Lynne's revamped ELO is in top form, playing six new songs from Zoom (ELO's first release in 15 years) and 17 hits from the band's beloved legacy. Like the meticulous producer he is, guitarist-composer Lynne plays cordial frontman to an appreciative audience, and his re-creation of ELO's classical-rock sound is astonishing in its fidelity to the studio recordings. From the moment ELO's signature "space-ship" stage blossoms to reveal Lynne's eight-piece ensemble (including, of course, two cellists), there's not a weak song in the brisk 98-minute set. Zoom Tour Live is ample compensation for those who bought useless tickets to an ill-fated show. --Jeff Shannon

Must have for E.L.O. fans.......2007-07-08
This concert was very well put together, a very profesional sound, great lighting and color also. Jeff's voice sounds great , and he shows he's a very good guitar player as well. I've always loved his old music ( i've been out of touch with elo's new stuff over the years), and now this dvd reintroduced me to Jeff's talent again. I've watched it many times, and will many times more. If you are a fan of Jeff's music, you will not be disapointed. Get it.
Zoom zooms!!!.......2007-05-16
Awesome concert video in quality of sound and production. ELO tried making a comeback in 2001 and it's a shame that tickets sales didn't go better. They shelved the tour, I believe. If you liked ELO in the seventies, you will love this DVD. New space ship, better looking cello players, and a superb performance and set list. Great on the hits and they also throw in some older not so big hits, which is what I always look for. All of the Zoom songs, which I hadn't heard but one, are all great songs as well. Jeff Lynne is fantastic and has not changed much at all. Looks the same and sounds the same. Buy this one and you will not regret it.
Michael's view of Zoom.......2007-05-07
Wow! Jeff Lynne has done it again. I know he has lost some of his high
range, but he can still belt out the tunes. I have been an ELO fan
since 1978, and I can't believe what he can still do. He is like a
super hero of music. After the release of the Zoom album, I heard
that Jeff would go on tour. I was on cloud nine (sorry George
Harrison) and ran to my computer and got on-line in search of a tour
schedule. I went into a deep depression when I discovered that the
tour had been cancelled. This video puts you up front at a special
event if you are an ELO fan. This was a performance in Los Angeles
before a live audience. This is the Zoom Tour, and it is great.
Don't miss out on this incredible performance. 5 Stars++
Outstanding Concert!.......2007-03-06
I never got to see ELO live but this is the next best thing! Truly great performance! In a previous review, someone said this isn't ELO! I disagree, Jeff Lynne IS ELO!! Always has been, always will be and the rest of the band was great! I would have loved to have seen them live!! Hope to see more from ELO!
Jeff Lynne and a competent band perform ELO classics and Zoom stuff........2007-03-04
It's really tempting to be critical of this DVD concert because watching it reminds me that the original ELO could still perform together, if they simply wanted to (at the time of this recording, I believe "ELO II" was alive and well and tourning and performing ELO hits), and I am also reminded that this was supposed to be the beginning of a tour that never happened. I would have paid to see this if only I'd been given a chance! (I actually saw ELO II at a club a few years ago and they were great.)
Anyway, the DVD is great fun. Play it through a big screen TV with a good sound system and just rock out! Great entertainment for much less than concert tickets, or even the cost of gas to drive to the concert. It doesn't pay to think about coulda-woulda-shoulda. Just enjoy.

Bombast, Beatles, and big hair are the order of the day on Out of the Blue: Live at Wembley, a 1978 show by Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra at that fabled London arena. This was a charity event with a couple of Royals in attendance, not to mention actor (and renowned music authority) Tony Curtis, who introduces the band as "the most outstanding rock group in the world today." In their dreams, maybe. Still, ELO managed to thrive in an era when the punk movement was obliterating many "dinosaur" bands of their ilk, with a string of hits and a flashy, entertaining stage show (the spaceship set is a trip), all on display throughout this hour-long performance. They cram a full thirteen tunes into that time, focusing on Out of the Blue, a double vinyl album which included the undeniably catchy hits "Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talkin' Woman"; we also get "Telephone Line," "Showdown," "Do Ya," and an extended "Roll Over Beethoven" to close the show. It's no coincidence that Lynne, who wrote, sang, and produced ELO's material, would go on to produce George Harrison's Cloud Nine and later preside over the mid-'90s reunion that saw Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Paul McCartney complete two "new" John Lennon songs. Lynne and his band were unabashed Beatlemaniacs, and mixed in with their rock-cum-pseudo-classical sound was the almost constant influence of the Fabs ("Mr. Blue Sky," to name just one, bears more than a passing resemblance to the McCartney-penned middle section of "A Day in the Life"). Of course, echoing the Beatles is neither an uncommon nor a bad thing, and Out of the Blue: Live at Wembley, which features digitally remastered sound, is good, dumb fun. The DVD package includes a too-small reproduction of the original tour program. --Sam Graham

Nostalgiac and Very Good.......2007-05-09
I remember seeing this concert on TV in 1978. It was exciting to me because ELO was my favorite Rock Group at the time.I had just recently discovered them from their "New World Record" album, (which my Brother had bought). I thought it was Great. Then came "Out Of The Blue". Which I thought was equally Great, though quite different. So to see them on TV for my first time was pretty cool. I didn't see it again until I bought this DVD in January 2007. I did buy the cd a few years ago and I was disapponted with the poor sound quality. But this DVD sounds very good. So to watch it again was very nostalgiac and to listen to it with a high quality sound system is very entertaining. ELO is still my favorite Rock Group and I highly recommend this DVD.
Good for funs.......2007-03-15
Sound and video quality is not perfect. However it can be excused that it was recorded so long ago. Nevertheless it is pleasure for ELO funs to have this concert in DVD
BIG DRUMS, A TOTAL ELO AUDIO EXPERIENCE. OUT OF THE BLUE 1978....................2007-02-08
The Zoom dvd performance is more tighter, but I like "Out Of The Blue" because seven of the original 1970s Elo Members are performing live. Above all this performance kept those big drums in play, as they are clearly not heard on "Zoom". The picture quality is faded but a beautiful remastering job never the less. The theatre system sound options include DTS, Dolby 5.1, and the ear shattering PCM Stereo. If you watch "Out Of The Blue" on your theatre system you will feel like your at the concert circa 1978. 13 songs of pure Elo madness. This was really a well performed show. A true 1970s trip. This dvd is a must have, and must be watched and heard on a theatre sytem to feel, and really understand the true audio remastering of this dvd release. THE PCM AND DTS OPTIONS ARE AN AUDIO MARVEL THAT MUST BE HEARD ON A THEATRE SYSTEM..............................
OF COURSE YOUR SEVEN ELO MUSICIANS WHO MADE THIS DVD A MUST HAVE........

The audio is great, the video looks good even after 30 years. This is a must have for any ELO fan!
Finally it's done right!.......2006-12-13
About 20 years ago, I decided to rent the ELO Live at Wembley VHS to which my girlfriend at the time said, "Oh, they lip-synched..." Her proclamation seemed confirmed as I watched Jeff and the boys appear to sync to the studio versions. Why were the crowd so crazy about them? Why would Bev flail at his drumkit with such abandon if he were not, in fact, playing for the audience? I was crushed, and I had a difficult time reconciling those who I considered professional musicians of integrity with folks like Milli Vanilli, etc. -- considering that, the Wembley VHS was a horrible ambassador for ELO as a live band.
This reissue DVD fully clears the band's reputation: They weren't frauds who faked their way through concerts! The original sound has been restored, no dubbing with the studio recordings and the band showed an amazing amount of confidence, power and energy. The band is not as tight as the 2001 Zoom edition, but the 31 year old Jeff Lynne was a lot more energetic that the 54 year old edition. My only regrets are the focus on the Out of the Blue album (that they were supporting) so you don't get too many classic songs from the back catalog, and a poor encore rendition of "Livin' Thing" which sounded insufficiently rehearsed. However, "Do Ya" and some of the older songs sound absolutely awesome. Anyway, I quite enjoyed the concert, and if you ever witnessed the sacrilege of the old Wembley editions, give this one a look. Nice packaging as well!

Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like it..........2002-11-17
I bought this DVD being an avid fan of the music. As anyone who's seen the DVD from the "Out of the Blue" tour, or perhaps live back in the day, you know that ELO had a great stage spectacle in terms of sets and orchestral players, but as a band they pretty much just stood around and played - especially Jeff Lynne. That's OK, it's all about the music in my opinion.
So now with this DVD, we get a glimpse into the band's post-Jeff Lynne era and we see that they are better live, much more animated and have seemed to benefit from the infusion of some energy thanks to several new band members. I will also say that the filming/production seem to be well done as well. Unfortunately, if you're hoping for anything but increased physical access to the band (lots of back stage glimpses), you will be disappointed with the documentary itself. The content of the interviews is lacking - there's no real insight into the dynamics of the original ELO and the making of their classic material. There is mostly just a reading of the roster of who joined the band when, etc. and an interestig anecdote of Bev Bevan buying his first drumkit. You don't really learn anything new about the band and you're left with the distinct impression that everything you're not being told would be much more entertaining that what you're listening to.
But what about the music? The first few selections on the DVD include some great old ELO numbers and, with the higher energy level and the full orchestra, there is hope that the musical magic will be present. But, alas, the entire second half of the DVD is dominated by songs from the new album which are, unfortunately, absolute trash. As a musician, it's easy to spot that the craft is missing from the new material and that they really don't have anything left to say. Even Phil Bates comments that a writer of Lynne's caliber will be missed from any group, and that's glaringly true here. "Whiskey Girls", "Don't Wanna", "Ain't Necessarily So", these songs are completely uninspired, and at their best are pale imitations of the most simplistic ELO songs. It wouldn't be so bad if, as I said, the second half of the DVD is really dominated by this material.
Close it all with the embarrassing spectacle of show girls "dancing" on stage during "Don't Bring Me Down" and a video of one of the new songs, and what began as a potentially entertaining documentary of a more rocking ELO has deteriorated into a sad commentary on an aging cover band imitating music they didn't write and whose own originals [stink]. I felt sad seeing a band responsible for such great music back in the day reduced to just another bunch of dinosaurs. It speaks volumes that they gave up this project not too long after the making of this DVD.
Do yourself a favor and get the Zoom DVD instead. Sure you have to put up with some of Jeff Lynne's new tunes and he pretty much still just stands around, but overall the musicianship, craftmanship and feel of that show are much better. And it has twice as much music on it. Or pick up the "Out of the Blue" tour DVD and see the band at their peak of popularity plus some really fun/cheesy videos to boot. Access All Areas will just make you feel sad.
A good insight into ELO Part 2........2001-11-05
A good insight into the camaraderie and humour of a close-knit group on tour. The potted history, whilst being quite informative, appears to gloss over the importance of Jeff Lynne as captain of the original great ship ELO. The UK/USA tour ("on the road") footage is almost exclusively in black and white, whereas the Sydney concert footage switches to colour.
The DVD comes with two soundtracks: a straight stereo mix, which is clear, and a Dolby 5.1 mix which ends up being quite muffled and confusing.
The fact that Bev Bevan and Phil Bates have since left ELO Pt 2, and that the group's name itself has been changed to "Orchestra" means that we have here a mini time-capsule of ELO Pt 2 from the mid-90's, with arguably their best line-up, playing with full orchestral backing. The bonus videos of "All Fall Down" and "Ain't Necessarily So" show that they continue to evolve and develop their own material without loosing total focus of what Jeff Lynne and the classic ELO sound stood for.
WORST Audio I Have EVER Heard !!.......2001-07-26
Don't waste your time! The audio is muffled - at best. Even the interviews are of poor audio quality. I've seen ELO live, twice, and they are far, far better than this cheesey DVD. Fortunately, they are on tour again (Fall 2001) - so perhaps a good DVD production is just around the corner. The other reviews contained in this section appear to be biased. Save your money - you do not want to own this DVD.
No Jeff Lynne, but who really cares?!.......2000-10-14
Obviously the previous reviewer of Access All Areas knows very little about producing videos and even less about the Electric Light Orchestra but as so many before him, he's more than happy to put fingers to keyboard without researching the subject matter at hand, which in my book is reviewer rule one. The Director of AAA, George Reed has always made it very clear (including on this page in fact) that AAA is NOT a Jeff Lynne video. Take it from someone very close to the production and the band that the day Jeff Lynne appeares on tape with any of the members of ELO pt2 (including one time pal and Electric Light Orchestra co-founder/drummer Bev Bevan) will be a very cold day in hell. When are some ELO fanatics going to get over the fact that the band moved on without Mr. Lynne and he without the band? At the time of AAA's production, it had been over a decade since anyone in ELO/ELO pt2 had spoken to Jeff, except through lawyers, so I ask you, do you think he would have ever in a million years stopped in to chew the fat? Another point of interest, the director, who is a bit of a musician himself, made it a priority to focus on the musicianship of the band, I mean, how many more behind the scenes jam sessions could he manage to cram into a single DVD that runs just under an hour in length? I can tell you not many, music was the focus from the first frame to the last, all you have to do is compare the talk time to performance time and the commitment is clear. Never before has anyone been given such complete access to the band and in turn never before has any filmmaker given the viewer such access to ELO. You truly see them as they are, on the bus, in the dressing room and during sound checks, where bands hate to see cameras! Another little point to clear up with the prior reviewer, Kelly (Groucutt) the bass player for ELO pt2 (also ELO 74-83) sings the opera opening to "Rockaria!" in the performance portion of the DVD and always has on stage, the only time the band used a real opera singer was in the studio way back in 1977 during the A New World Record sessions, so if you're waiting for her to pop up, keep looking. Also... if your expecting a liberal dose of mud slinging in AAA you wont find it, and that's really a testament to the kind of people the guys in the band are. There's a saying in ELO while their on tour, "What happens on the road, stays on the road." So for those who crave more than great performances and a fantastic first person perspective on the Move, ELO and ELO pt2, watch Jerry Springer, because what the guys don't reveal through the length of AAA is obviously nobody's business but their own. These things may seem trivial, but they are important to note as to illusrate how misleading reviews (even by the pro's) can be. That said, I can tell you that most importantly, the performances are great, the MIX outstanding, the mood candid, the history rich and the film making excellent. I'm guessing that for most music fans and more importantly ELO fans that that's quite enough, and it's also what they've come to expect from one of the true class acts of the music business. And if I do say so myself, that's plenty!
Unrealized potential.......2000-10-09
I have been a fan of ELO since the mid 70s and have seen them in concert (the "Spaceship" tour). Accordingly, I was eager to see how their work would translate to video.
The result is not all positive, but first off I will say that this is the best video of ELO's live performances available. The sound mix is excellent by 70's concert movie standards (e.g, YESSONGS, YES LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA 1979) but woefully inadequate in comparison with other recent concert DVDs (e.g., HOUSE OF YES, WOODSTOCK '99). The bass is totally lost, the drums muddy, and the orchestra (Moscow Symphony) often inaudible. The vocal harmonies do sound great, but the fact that ELO has used taped choruses in previous concerts lends some uncertainty as to whether all the vocalists are both live and on-stage. The soprano soloist on "Rockaria" was heard but not seen. If she was on tape, shame on the band for the cop-out, and if she was onstage, shame on the director for not showing her.
This brings up another deficiency: direction. There are almost no shots that showcase the band's musicianship. Devoted fans of ELO, like those of other 70s art-rock bands, are often musicians themselves, and they are bound to be disappointed by the artistic choices of a director who seems to have no interest in musical performance itself. Considering this, and the fact that there are so few songs in the performance, the film fails as a concert tape.
But it's still a documentary, right? Well, it has problems there, too. I enjoyed the interviews with Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminsky, but no interviews with Jeff Lynne? Or Richard Tandy? That's like doing a documentary on The Beatles and not interviewing Paul and George. You will learn a few things, though, the most surprising to me being that Phil Bates, Lynne's replacement, was in Trickster, the little-known but excellent band that opened for ELO in the Spaceship days. However, the complete lack of anything controversial in the interviews leads one to believe that this "documentary" was commissioned by the band itself (see the nauseating BEACHBOYS: AN AMERICAN BAND for an example of paid-for, pre-packaged journalism).
Bottom line: Yes, buy the DVD, but only because ELO fans have nothing better--yet. Just keep praying that someday, someone will give us an excellent ELO concert video that gives us the great music without the gratuitous spin.

disappointed. expected more performances with the band. not what i expected. wish i could get my money back.
not all that bad.......2005-09-28
i'm a huge fan of the move, and it was good to see a little footage of them performing BLACKBERRY WAY and WILD TIGER WOMAN. some of the commentary on the 1st ELO album was illuminating, and it was nice to see various opinions on the work presented. they did a pretty good job with showing the different approaches of roy wood and jeff lynne. for me, the move, wizzard, roy wood solo, the debut ELO album, and lynne's first band of any consequence, the idle race, are far superior to the subsequent hit making machine fronted by lynne. with the novelty of the early band's revolutionary approach to rock by using stringed instruments in a rock style, and the power struggle between one of rock's most talented duos since lennon/ mccartney...well, there is an interesting story there. unfortunately, while it was great to see some early elo footage, ( particularly solid renditions of the hauntingly beautiful whisper in the night and the excellent 10538 oeverture)after a while a sort of repettition sets in with the comments...hopefully they will do a move dvd as the previous reviewer noted. overall, not a bad film, but it could have been better.
Good ELO documentary.......2005-08-10
This DVD will probably only hold interest to die hard ELO/Move/Wizzard & Roy/Jeff/Bev fans [like me!]
It IS a documentary, NOT a 'performance video'. There are some great clips of the earliest ELO line-up [personnel] with lots & lots [almost TOO much] comments by English rock/music critics.
It's good because it has footage from [very HARD TO FIND in the states] British & German TV shows....
It's not as good as it COULD'VE been because the makers of the DVD COULD have added the complete performances [by themselves without the blab & commentary] in an additional menu. The documentary [complete show] lasts one hour. DVDs can hold MORE than that. Anyway, it's just a suggestion....
This is why I gave it 3 stars. It's good but not "excellent".
Hopefully someday the powers that be [like "F.T.M."???] will put out a nice BIG DVD set of The Move & ELO [with "Mike Sheridan's Lot"! & "Wizzard"!] like 'The Beatles Anthology' where they cover the WHOLE Move/ELO saga & do it up proper.
the real elo-roy wood.......2005-07-17
this is great just to see roy wood -is a treat in it self-hopeful-a move dvd will come out. great job guys elo first album is the best hads down-5-star dvd -this dvd is a must for elo fans/roy wood fans and the move fans give us more roy wood.
Stolen clips, irrelevant chatter, profiteering.......2005-04-27
If you care about ethical behavior, then avoid the Inside series from Classic Rock. To avoid paying royalties, they use clips less than 20 seconds long, often of very poor quality, and argue that it is fair use, since they are doing "critical reviews." They sell their wares to the public as informative and musical, and the content is neither: just a thrown together rip-off mishmash.

Forget the concert, buy it for the Discovery videos.......2007-02-12
The "Out of the blue" concert on here was originally released on VHS many years ago and was apparently overdubbed with the studio recordings to rectify the terrible sound. Essentially the concert was filmed back in 1978 and the sound wasn't captured well. The problem with overdubbing it, people watching the VHS thought they were watching a lip-synched concert.
The concert is now available on DVD and appears to be the original sound except for some songs which clearly sound like they have been overdubbed (Sweet talking woman). Also, the concert is dark and visually unappealing.
Included on the DVD however (as a special feature) are the videos for the Discovery album. WHile they are dated and simple, it makes up for the appalling concert. All of the songs off Discovery are fantastic and worth at least one viewing ... after that, just turn off the TV and listen to this classic album through your speakers.
If you want a good ELO concert DVD, purchase ZOOM which is from 2002 and features Jeff Lynne and new musicians performing all the hits - in DTS sound.
It's all about the "Bonus".......2006-07-27
This is a rare example in which the "Bonus" of a DVD can easily be considered the main feature. Indeed, I bought this collection more attracted to the DISCOVERY videos than to the concert. Why? Basically, because Discovery is one of my favorite albums of all time, and the collection of its videos is something that I watched on TV a lot, although fragmented, at the beginning of the 80's.
This collection of videos represent one of a few cases in which the artist released a filmed version of a complete LP to promote it, something that seemed to have a jump-start in those years (79 through 81) but that regretfully was not imitated afterwards ("Physical" by Olivia Newton John and "Visions" by Elton John are other examples).
Now, the fact that the videos were released in 1979 should tell you that they are very simple. Most of them are "perfomance" videos, it's only the band lip-synching the whole thing in a small stage and a couple of cameras, with some decoration and change of clothes everytime. Obviously, only 4 of the videos were a little more elaborated for commercial release: "Shine a little love", "The diary of Horace Wimp", "Last train to London" and "Don't bring me down". The rest have very basic production values. All the feature is preseted with a high quality image.
Now, after a while, to have Jeff Lynne's face, well, in your face, becomes a little tedious (come on, he's no Olivia Newton John!). Even if that happens to you, you can turn off the TV and just enjoy the music. The whole Discovery program comes in an enhanced (though not remixed) 5.1 dolby sound. I've never heard this album that clear and strong in my life. That's a real plus in having this collection.
Somebody claimed that an out-of-synch problem exists in these videos with the image and the audio, but I had no such problem, and hopefully you won't either (my DVD player is a Pioneer DV 578A).
The only low point that I found is that the closing credits of the "Discovery" feature run at the end of "Don't bring me down", so that video is not visually complete. But it's obvious that this is how the collection was originally compiled, so it's nothing new.
Ah, yes...there's also a concert in this DVD.
Although it's in 5.1 dolby also, the sound is not very good. Instead of "enhanced" it sounds with a little distortion. It's better to hear it in stereo.
The image is good, but not as good as with the videos, making no secret about the year in which the concert was filmed.
And in some songs, the help of a pre-recorded track as a support is evident (it's in those instances in which precisely the sound is more distortioned).
All these minor flaws shouldn't be a problem for any ELO fan who wants to own a collection of old songs live.
As to me, all this don't matter much. You see, for me the concert is a bonus... :-)
Fine program marred by DVD authoring defect on bonus tracks.......2004-12-11
This program would have rated 5 stars,if not for a DVD authoring defect on the bonus program "Discovery".On the 9 "Discovery" videos, there is a sound/picture synchronization problem which causes the sound to constantly run ahead of the picture. The 1990's Laserdisc didn't have this problem. With a little more quality control during DVD authoring, this DVD would have made a fine replacement/upgrade,since its' picture quality is generally better and cleaner than the Laserdisc.Shame on you,Eagle Rock Entertainent!!!Oh well,I got the DVD cheaply through a markeplace merchant for under $7.As an update to the above, when "ICE Magazine" confronted Eagle Rock Entertainment about the problem with this disc,Eagle Rock denied there was a problem, and said that I probably have an older DVD player(I use a Pioneer Elite DV-45A,which isn't that old),but then Eagle Rock concedes that one of the people that works for their DVD authoring house had the same problem.Whether you encounter this sound/picture synchronisation problem may depend on your disc player. You've been cautioned!!

The English band Electric Light Orchestra won fame because of their style of mixing pop music with classical music. With the performance of artists such us the Symphony Orchestra of Moscu. A show presented in this DVD from a concert given during a tour the band realized in 1995. Also, the Symphony Orchestra of Sydney directed by Luis Clark, member of the Electric Light Orchestra.

ELO II Australia.......2007-04-12
If you don't know who this band is, it consists of several members from the original Electric Light Orchestra, plus some others, but without Jeff Lynne. I have seen this band live twice in small venues, and it was great. Please note that this European release (2-discs) has a LOT more tracks than its U.S. counterpart, which is only a single-disc item. This has been released under other names, including ELO Part II In Concert. Make sure you get this version if you want all of the songs.

A wonderful trip down memory lane.......2007-01-12
