The Long Road to Cabo is a delightful documentary about rock & roll fellowship, featuring Sammy Hagar as the founder of a summer-long feast of heavy metal, Van Halen memories, and many bared female bosoms (in Hagar's audiences, that is). Looking more like a mellow, mid-life surfer than hairy rock icon from the 1980s, the ever-expansive Hagar leads the Waboritas through a long, hot 2002 tour, sharing a bill with David Lee Roth, Hagar's co-outcast from Van Halen. Despite their shared ignominy, Roth rebuffs Hagar's efforts at collaboration, or at least camaraderie, resulting in a competitive and entertainingly catty atmosphere.

One can't help but enjoy a vicarious high watching the demographically diverse Waboritas rumble and squawk through Hagar's classic repertoire, mixing it up onstage with old pals Ted Nugent and Michael Anthony, and even welcoming Gary Cherone, Hagar's replacement in Van Halen, into the fold. The feature-length "Long Road" offers plenty of strong, occasionally hypnotic performances, especially "Heavy Metal," "When It's Love," and a rehearsal fling with Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35."

A second disc conveniently packs four hours of essential Hagar history and miscellany onto one disc, including batches of music videos (from the vintage "Little White Lies" to the recent, and quite agreeable, "Things've Changed") with and without Hagar's commentary and sing-along lyrics. Those versions featuring the loquacious Hagar's recollections are pretty entertaining and sometimes surprising. It turns out, for example, that his and Eddie Van Halen's neighboring houses in "Hands and Knees" (in which Hagar's shouts awake the sleeping guitarist) were not a fantasy backdrop but the real deal. Also on disc 2 is ancient performance footage, handwritten lyric sheets, a documentary about Hagar's career, a photo album, and, most importantly, a session in Sammy's kitchen making spaghetti sauce the way Granddad taught him. --Tom Keogh

Description

Sammy Hagar And The Wabos - Livin' It Up Live! - Caught live in St Louis on their sold out 2006 US tour, Sammy And The Wabos bring down the house with songs from their new album, Livin' It Up, as well as some of Sammy's famed solo work. Joined on stage for the second half of the show by legendary Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony, the band rips through some of rock radio's classic tunes. From "I Can't Drive 55" and "Mas Tequila" to "Finish What You Started" and "Right Now", it's one big Cabo party with the "Red Rocker"! December 6, 1978-it might have started before then but I'll never forget Sammy opening for Ted Nugent at the Checkerdome in St. Louis. Opening acts aren't supposed to have the audience in the palm of their hand but Sammy sure did. His honesty and sincerity captivated the audience. The relationship between this artist and this city would never be the same. Almost 30 years later Sammy is still honest, still sincere and now more than ever, holds the St. Louis audience in the palm of his hand with a shot of Cabo in the other. Sammy fans everywhere just want to know, "What is it with Sammy and St. Louis?" It could be the relationship between Sammy and KSHE radio which dates back to the early 70's and the Montrose days. It could be all of the great solo albums. It could be the days with Van Halen. I think it's a combination of all of the above magnified by the sweat and energy of 33 plus shows that over 500,000 diehard fans have witnessed in this city. Whatever this "thing" is between Sammy and St. Louis it's real, it's heartfelt and spiritual to a degree. Once you watch the DVD you might understand. Favazz--KSHE/St. Louis Songs: Miss Tequila, Mexico, There's Only One Way to Rock, Rainy Day Women (#12/#35), The Girl Gets Around, Rock Candy, I'll Fall in, Love Again, I'll Take You There, Sam I Am, Little White Lie, I Can't Drive 55, Heavy Metal, Good Enough, Summer Nights, Right Now, Finish What You Started, Best of Both Worlds, Fight for Your Right, Cabo Wabo

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD!.......2007-07-09

I watched this DVD this past weekend, and well, all I can say is that I felt like I was actually at a Sammy Hagar concert! This release really has a great live feel to it. Fortunately, the editing was done well, with not too many camera angles or split second angle changes that have plagued many DVD releases in recent years (like Iron Maiden's last 2 live DVDs). The camera is actually allowed to linger on one shot for more than a fraction of a second. In addition to a well produced video, the setlist is also great as well as the audio. This DVD really is like being at a big Sammy Hagar party!

The only thing that I would change on this release is how loud Mona's background vocals are on certain songs. Her background vocals are too loud in the mix and are at times as loud or louder than Sammy's. Michael Anthony's vocals, however, are perfect during the second half of the set. I like Mona on bass in this band, but it sure would be nice to see Michael as the full time bassist for Sammy now that he's been booted from Van Halen. I believe that Sammy and Michael are just meant to be togther and I hope to see this happen sometime in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy is the man !.......2007-06-28

This is a fun DVD. It shows Sammy in one of his favorite cities, St. Louis, doing what he does best .. playing live and having fun.
Who cares that Sammy is a 60 year old seasoned veteran ... he still rocks like he's 20 and gives meaning to the phrase "old is only how you feel".
What I like about this DVD is the fact that he plays his staples, then throws in some almost forgotten classics (The Girl Gets Around, I'll Fall In Love Again) and even when Micheal Anthony joins him on stage, you get some staples of a Van Halen set and lost gems like Summer Nights and Good Enough.
If you love good time rock and roll from one of the greats ... get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome up to date video.......2007-06-22

Absolutely great Hagar footage.

Why someone who is NOT a Hagar Fan, would view this DVD is absolutely beyond me.

So for the one star dork who asked the question why can't old gezers like Sammy get out of the way........Well, why watch the concert in the first place?

A Hagar fan who DOESN'T like this, well, I can respect, if not agree with that. But if you don't like Sammy in the first place, why waste your time?

Sam man touches on many great hits that HAGAR fans want to see. He rips loose on the guitar quite a bit so that adds to the project.

St. Louis must be an absolute AWESOME city to see Hagar play in as the audience is comepletely into the show. I've seen Sammy before, but never in St. Looo. Given I'm a die hard Rams fan, I need some stars to align for me and make a trip to kill two birds with one stone.

If you ARE a Hagar fan, you WILL love this DVD. If you are NOT a Hagar fan, you probably won't. But then agian, why would you bother?

Hat's off to the Red Rocker!

5 out of 5 stars Why St. Louis Loves Sammy.......2007-06-21

As I write this, I am listening to Sammy's DVD release concert LIVE on KSHE. It sold out in minutes. What is it with St. Louis and Sammy Hagar. At one of his shows, we know all the words and sing along during the show. It does not matter if it is Montrose, Sammy Solo, or Van Halen (Van Hagar in St. Louis), we love it. I tried to find the DVD at lunch and it was already sold out. You really have to hear Sammy live to appreciate his music. Buy this DVD and then go see a show, after drinking lots of tequila of course.

To Sammy Hagar, rock & roll has always been one long party. His whole career (Montrose, solo, Van Halen, solo again) has been a paean to getting drunk, getting laid, and getting up the next day to do it again. That's all Cabo Wabo Birthday Bash Tour is: a document of Sammy's two-hour rockin' birthday party. Onstage, Hagar hosts the world's loudest party, and when he doesn't have a guitar or a mic in his hands, there's probably a margarita.

Even if there are too many shots of fans hamming it up for the cameras, the concert itself is a blast, with Hagar and his crack band, the Waboritas, cranking out a 22-song retrospective of the Red Rocker's career, from the early days to his 2000 release, Ten 13. For the curious, the quartet of "Van Hagar"-era tunes--"Top of the World," "Finish What Ya Started," "Why Can't This Be Love," and "Cabo Wabo"-- rock as hard as they did with a certain Eddie Van Halen by Hagar's side.

Extra features on the second DVD give fans a teasing 10-minute glimpse of Hagar's Cabo Wabo cantina in Mexico and an hourlong interview with the man himself. The DTS and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is, of course, head-bangingly loud; what else would you want from the ultimate partier? --Kevin Filipski

5 out of 5 stars Two disc Birthbash tour........2005-03-04

I thought this was a great two disc set. Only one way to rock lets you see some of sammys guitar playing up close. And his I can drive 55 is always good. I think that the best way to enjoy this album is to have a stereo TV and turn it up. Lot good looking women too! His personal interview shows what a good guy he is. Not many left like Sammy....

2 out of 5 stars A big letdown!.......2004-01-08

I review concert dvd's on amazon, always before I purchase them, and I must say, this is the first time I have been let down by the concensus. The lone naysayer who said that production qualities and DTS sound was poor, was right. This is the only concert disc that I have purchased, where the dolby track was better than the DTS track, and the dolby track was mediocre at best.Absolutely no bottom end.The setlist leaned way to heavy on current material, and the Van Hager tunes seemed rushed with Sammy frequently off key,and the band singing the chorus while Sammy catches his breath. My 8 year old is just discovering rock music, and he loves watching these concerts, but this concert is peppered with foul language. I kept fast forwarding to find a track that didn't contain a curse-filled introduction, and when I found one,lo and behold,Sammy would replace vulgarity for lyrics.Scantily clad women is one thing, but the constant potty-mouth banter is lame and 2nd rate. After watching it alone for a second time, and adjusting my system,I still couldn't find anything redeeming about this disc.An X-rated good quality bootleg at best.I returned this one.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better!.......2003-09-13

DVD concert of the century! Nobody rocks better than Sammy. This is a must for all fans of music. The Red Rocker is timeless. Sammy's repertoire of material speaks for itself in this performance. Sorry DLR, this stuff is way out of your league!!! I loved Van Halen but the solo material is so much more passionate and real. The Waboritas are without question his best band. Vic Johnson is soooo cool. It would have been nice to see "3 In The Middle" included, but nevertheless this concert shreds! Non-stop entertainment, rock's greatest voice, oldest teenager, and coolest frontman. Sit back, grab some tequila, and enjoy over 2 hours of pure rock and roll bliss. You won't be disappointed. The interview disc is very enjoyable also. Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars Sammy strikes again.......2003-09-09

Sammy Hagar is a phenomenon. He's 55 years old and still rocks like he's 20. I've seen Sammy live in concert with Van Halen, solo and at Cabo Wabo and he is definately at his best in a small club environment. Sammy isn't doing it anymore for the money...he's doing it because he loves to perform. How many singers would let fans come onstage with him? Sammy and his top-notch band shake the rafters in this one. If you're a Sammy fan, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars the red rocker is still the man!!.......2003-01-01

i bought the dvd before he came to phoenix and was ready for the show by the time sammy and his great band came to town. the show was an absolutely perfect copy of the dvd. the dvd is as good as any rock performance you'll see and will have you yearning to see sammy and the group in concert.this is a must buy dvd for all avid rock & roll fans!!

4 out of 5 stars SAMMY ROCKS!!.......2007-01-10

This is a great peak into the life of a rock star...a TRUE rock star on the road. Sammy would argue about the rock star thing and say that he is a party guy who happens to sing rock music, but to me...that is a rock star!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Documentery.......2006-03-16

Sammy is one of my all-time favorite rock artists. This DVD documents the 'Sammy & Dave' tour and is filled with live concert footage as well as behind the scenes stuff including Sammy's home as well as his own bar, the Cabo Wabo Cantina.

If you're a Sammy Hagar fan or even just a fan of pure rock-n-roll you're going to love this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Way beyond my expectations !!.......2006-02-18

Here you have a glimpse of Sammy Hagar the rocker and it makes such an awesome DVD. The documentary/concert format is awesome, you get to see so much of Sammy and the waboritas, you feel their intensity and you can see how much fun they have on stage... I really recomend this DVD for any Red rocker/Van hagar/Waboritas fan. Go SAMMY!

5 out of 5 stars Four cameras were rolling 24/7.......2005-12-01

There is this great DVD that came out in 2003 called "The Long Road To Cabo" by Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas. There are two DVDs in the set. The first DVD is a mix of some live Hagar tracks mixed in with a whole lot of Sammy, well, being Sammy. "Four cameras were rolling 24/7" is what the case tells me. Listening to Sammy Hagar go on and on about how much better he is then David Lee Roth. He talks about Van Halen. He talks about food. He shows off his family. But what is often missed on this DVD is the music. How loyal his fans have been, "The Red Heads", through all his ups and downs. The body of music this man has made will blow you away. From his start with Montroes, in my opinion, one of the best debut albums ever! Through his long and rocking 70s and early 80s solo career. The whole Van Hagar thing, that was a high in his song writing career! Back to the solo master that he is. The "Red Rocker" has made some of the best in your face rock music of all time. You get to hear what an ear he truly has for music. The band he put together, The Waboritas, are truly gifted! It was easy to see why David Lee Roth had his hands full playing on the Sam And Dave tour. Sammy's band made him look and sound good every evening. They are no "back up band!!" You also get to hear Sammy Hagar with guest stars like Gary Cherone, his replacement in Van Halen for one album, Ted Nugent, Michael Anthony and Kid Rock. I could have done without the Kid Rock crap, but hey Sammy is a legend. He does take a few shots at Kid because he likes to hang with David Lee Roth during one of the shows. There is nothing like hearing "Red" done live, the way it should be done! Does a great version of "Wild Thing" with Ted Nugent. His take on L.Z.'s "Rock & Roll" with Gary Cherone is good too. They play it in New York City in front of the police and fire fighter heroes! He even has a little fun with Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35". Just wish you got a little more of that song! If you look past all the B.S. and rock star poser crap. If you get past the "shucks mam, I'm just doing my job" type of demeanor he has through most of the DVD, you will find what is for real, THE MUSIC!!
By the way, the second DVD is not a throw away. You get Sammy's solo music videos, video commentary, trivia game with a bonus video if you get the question right, Sammy's kitchen (Sammy does his own cooking show for you), sing with Sammy, one of the most complete discography's I have ever seen on an artist and the vault (other little goodies).

5 out of 5 stars Anything Below 5 *'s makes ZERO sense.......2005-09-15

This DVD was awesome from top to bottom. The AMAZON review of this DVD tells you EXACTLY what you are getting. So anyone who did NOT like this becuase they thought this was a Concert DVD(In particular the one reviewer who gave this 2 stars becuase he didn't READ what he was purchasing!) really is missing what they have in front of them: A COMPLETE look at Hagar from every vantage point possible.

How this documentary did not garner any industry accolades is imo a crime. For some reason, there is a bug up too many experts and rock insiders you know what's, for them to truly just sit back and appreciate Sammy.

If you guys would just drop the "DLR Chip" that is on your shoulders and stop holding it against SAMMY that Dave got the boot from VH, you might find out that Hagar has had a pretty amazing career and has produced some awesome music over the past 30 + years.

And checking out this DVD would be a great place to start if you want to find out what you missed.

    4 out of 5 stars a great farewell indeed.......2007-06-22

I bought this CD because I love everything Mr Big has done. However, although this is a great show, it lacks the FULL energy of their heydey (see DVD of Mr Big LIVE - shot in San Francisco with original guitarist Paul Gilbert). Ritchie Kotzen dazzles as always, and Billy Sheehan proves once again his prowess on bass. Pat Torpey does his thing on the drums and hits HARD, and Eric Martin is Eric Martin: one of the BEST rock vocalists alive.

Only concern I had was what I saw on this DVD was what I saw when they came to Palo Alto during this period: they seemed tired. As mentioned, Mr Big of the early 1990s TORE UP the stage and hit the crowd like a ton of bricks. This show, although sounding great as always, shows a band at the end of their tenure, ready to call it a day. Yes, this is the farewell show, but if one asks why I give this 4 out of 5 stars, this is why. All else about this DVD says "Buy it!!!" My opinion is buy this & Mr Big LIVE... it will give you a full perspective of Eric Martin & Co.
