This briliant performance was recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum, December 30 and 31, 1981, with the sound, the hard-driving rhythms, the soothing melodies, the scintillating horns and special effects that have dazzled concertgoers around the world. Maurice White, the founder and driving force behind Earth, Wind & Fire has done it again: blending the energy, music and creativity that is Earth, Wind & Fire.

If it weren't for a couple of inspired performances, as well as the time-capsule weirdness of it all, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band would be definitively unwatchable. This misguided effort to dramatize the classic Beatles album (the Fab Four had nothing to do with it, thank goodness) also includes tunes from other Beatles LPs, strung together in lumbering '70s rock-opera style. Peter Frampton, then at the crest of his brief run at the top, stars as Billy Shears, with the Bee Gees wearing the glossy day-glo band jackets from the Pepper album cover. Earth, Wind & Fire turn in a spirited revamp of "Got to Get You into My Life," and Aerosmith thrash their way through "Come Together"; but most of the performances are pretty awful. Out-and-out novelties include Steve Martin doing "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and George Burns (but of course) warbling "Fixing a Hole." This high-profile 1978 flop helped kill the hot streak (Saturday Night Fever, Grease) of record and movie producer Robert Stigwood and sink his RSO movie-music empire. --Robert Horton

great to have - the boys are at their best and it is a good rememberance piece

1 out of 5 stars Rating of zero is generous.......2007-05-24

I'll challenge anyone who may think they are a bigger fan of the Beatles than myself, however, this is the absolute WORST movie I had ever had the displeasure of viewing in my life. I simply cannot understand how the Beatles could have given the rights to their music to an outfit who could make such a disaster. This is actually painful to watch; you'd get more enjoyment out of watching paint dry. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden classic.......2007-05-14

I had known that The Beatles made movies to go a long with some of their albums, like Help! and Yellow Submarine, but I had never heard of this one. My husband had seen it as a child and recently made me rent it and boy am I glad! This movie is amazing! We ended up purchasing it shortly after. It stars the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton with tons of special guest stars. This may sound strange, but their performances are amazing and they add a whole new dimension to the album. The whole movie seems to parallel The Beatles rise to fame and the sex, money and corruption that goes along with it. I think this movie is a classic and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Bad and Good.......2007-05-11

This is a bad movie but I still love it. I remember seeing this in the theatre when it first came out. Okay, it's cheesy and kind of stupid but sometimes you just gotta take what you like and forget about the rest. I love the Bee Gees and I love these songs. I especially love Robin singing "Oh Darlin," and Aerosmith (as the FVB- Future Villian Band)singing a really cool version of "Come Together." Awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Fluff, but a lot of fun.......2007-05-10

When I first saw this movie in 1978, I wasn't expecting a movie on the level of, say, "Gone With The Wind" (which is another of my favorite movies). I knew it would be silly but that was ok. I was a fan of Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees and the chance to see them on the big screen was simply too good to pass up.

I have just seen the movie on television a couple of days ago. I have to say after almost 30 years I still enjoy it as much as I did then. I recall a review stating it was "Not bad on a hot summer day. . ." (KC paper 1978) and I still agree. It's just a fun way to spend a couple of hours. All of the music is quite good but there are a few standout performances -- Dianne Steinberg/Stargard "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", Peter Frampton "The Long And Winding Road", Barry Gibb/Bee Gees "A Day In The Life", George Burns "Fixing A Hole", Robin Gibb/Bee Gees "Oh Darling", Aerosmith "Come Together" and Earth Wind And Fire "Got To Get You Into My Life". Of course all the stars in the finale, and just the fun of seeing how young everyone looked then.

This movie is good clean family fun and I'd recommend it. Especially to someone who still loves the seventies.

The '70s and '80s rule as two of the most popular bands from that era join forces on Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre, a two-disc, nearly three-hour concert recorded in Los Angeles in 2004. These groups scored dozens of hits in their heydays, and if neither has come up with much of anything that's new in the past two decades, the sold-out audience at the Greek Theatre could hardly care less. Both Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, have soldiered on despite key personnel changes over the years (Chicago bassist-singer Peter Cetera and EWF founder Maurice White are long gone, and much missed); here they perform energetic and tasteful versions of everything from "Make Me Smile," "I'm a Man," and "Saturday in the Park" (Chicago) to "That's the Way of the World," "Fantasy," and "Serpentine Fire" (EWF), among many others, to rapturous response. Nothing too exciting about all of that--in fact, it's a bit like witnessing a couple of very skilled tribute bands at work--but there are a few surprises, as when Chicago keyboardist-singer Bill Champlin takes the lead on "After the Love Has Gone" (which he co-wrote) and EWF singer Philip Bailey returns the favor on Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." The highlights are the first and last portions of the show, when the two bands (complete with horn sections) share the stage for "September," "25 or 6 to 4," "Shining Star," and more, displaying genuine joy at performing together and generating a huge, infectious sound delivered with high definition visuals and digital audio. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre.......2007-05-26

What a fantastic combination of great bands! You could have not asked for any better concert to add to one's concert collection!

1 out of 5 stars Chicago/Earth, Wind, & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre.......2007-05-07

It was horrible sound quality, you could hear the band but the voices sounded like they had no mike's! It was very frustrating, because I wanted to like it, I love the bands!! It was very poor quality, I rated it one star because that was the lowest, but it was even lower than that!!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Looks !!.......2007-03-12

When I saw this DVD with both bands at the same concert, I saw it as a must have.
The good points first - good introduction with both bands performimg 3-4 numbers. Earth Wind & Fire sound as good as they ever have on any CD I have heard. Time has not changed their sound, just brilliant.
The DVD sound and picture quality are very good, as you would expect from recent recordings.
Now for the disappointing stuff. I was really looking forward to hearing EWF's song, "After The Love Has Gone". The lead singer from Chicago actually wrote it and HE comes on to do the lead vocals. EWF's vocal backing are brilliant but the song is ruined by the Chicago singer - his voice has deteriorated over the years and struggles to get the notes out - you would not recognise him if you have not heard the band since the 1970's or 1980's.
Chicago's best easy listening song "If You Leave Me Now" is sung by the EWF lead singer - although he can still sing and does a nice job, it does not sound like the song you wanted to hear Chicago sing.
Chicago these day, have several young singers in the band and with the aging lead singer struggling a bit, none of the vocals sound anything like the 70's an 80's recordings you are used to hearing.
The concert is still well produced and put together, but I wish I had bought a DVD with just EWF on it.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Earth Wind and Fire.......2007-02-23

Earth Wind and Fire are fabulous in this DVD. Chicago vocals are not so good.I watch the EWF performance very frequently and even listen to it as I exercise. The greatest thrill is to experience EWF live performances, I have seen them 7 times in 2007 at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

5 out of 5 stars from a music teacher's point of view.......2007-02-11

This DVD is excellent because it shows two distinct styles of music getting along. It also shows a variety of instruments that can reinforce the students' identification skills. Plus the music is fun to listen too. I usually only show one or two songs at a time. It also shows how bad it looks (at least from my point of view) to be chewing gum on stage.

2 out of 5 stars too much.......2007-05-20

While I thought it was fun to hear some of the old tunes from both of these groups(they perform separately then together at the end), overall musically they were just OK. The two lead singer/guitar player guys were about 25 and stuck out like sore thumbs, playing with these other guys in their 50-60's. One guy with EW&F jumped around the whole time he was on stage like he couldn't keep still. I'm from this era of music and I love this stuff but the production was overdone with too much jumping around and not enough musical excellence. After watching Eagles Farewell Tour I, this looked thrown together with too much fluff and not enough attention to the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Get the live feeling.......2007-05-13

1 out of 5 stars BE CAREFULL!.......2007-03-19

I saw this DVD at a friend's house and I just had to have it - it's AWESOME and it deserves 5 stars. The reason for the one star is that when I received the DVD the cover said that it only plays on HD DVD players. Since I just spent close to $3000 on a HD 50 inch plasma TV and a home theater system to go with it, I did not think it was a problem. Well, I was WRONG. This HD DVD does NOT play on my DVD player - it is not compatible. I did not realize that I was getting the HD DVD version of this DVD. I want to order one that plays on my DVD player but I am hesitant - how will I know I will be getting the one that plays on the DVD player that I have? I cannot return it since it's been opened so now I am stuck with a $20.00 DVD that I cannot play. I am very, very disappointed.

EWF at their best. To bad they weren't in the US

3 out of 5 stars Earth wind & fire in Japan.......2005-12-16

I love EWF but I was unpleased with what I saw in the dvd. I myself am a bass guitarist like Verdine White the bassist for the EWF band. Verdine is not playing the bass to the songs. Someone off stage or a recording is being played and he is faking. Like I said, I love EWF very much and always will but if they want to really impress me,show me a dvd of the band performing the "GRATITUDE" album in concert. That would be hard to fake. The music was great and Phillip Bailey still got the voice. They are a very energetic band and have excellent showmanship. Over all the performance was ok by my standards but you might feel differently.

5 out of 5 stars Earth, Wind & Fire - Live From Japan.......2005-07-06

This is a must own DVD if you're an EWF fan. While there are other EWF concert DVDs that may have a better version of "Reasons," overall this was one of their best recorded performances.

4 out of 5 stars EWF Live In Japan 1994: Maurice White Is Still In The Band!.......2005-01-03

For the last two decades Earth, Wind & Fire has continued to tour regularly, though they have not come up with much in the way of memorable fresh material to add to a legacy that provided many timeless performances from roughly 1973-1981. As such, on this 1994 Japan concert video -- one of Maurice White's last before illness took him off the stage -- all but a couple of tunes are from the above-mentioned era. However, the performances have too much vitality and freshness for one to think this is just another oldies act going through the motions. Accordingly, this DVD is a good option for those wanting to get a taste of the group near if not quite at the peak of their performing powers. By the way, note that there is also a 1990 Live In Japan DVD, just in case anyone is confused about which tour this video represents.

Although I miss the extended jams (e.g., "Africano") , EWF does offer strong, concise versions of mostly their greatest hits, covering the seventeen tunes in the DVD's one-hour running time (note that several songs are brief interludes), and performed with a full band including a horn section and two female dancers. The between-song moments are edited down, so you get wall-to-wall music which mostly replicates the sound of the original recordings. In general both White and particularly Philip Bailey are in top form vocally, and in-step with the choreographed moments. Still, although his performance doesn't suffer it is a little disconcerting to see White have this "far-away-look" in his eyes at times, leaving one to wonder if this is a sign of things to come (to be fair, it may be unrelated). Nevertheless, I find his presence to be crucial in making this video recommended over any of the post-White EWF DVDs in circulation.

5 out of 5 stars Great concert.......2004-01-02

Great concert - one of the best that I have ever seen. God bless you Maurice White>>>>>>>>>>>GREAT JOB.

One of the hugest soul-funk groups of the last half of the 1970s, Earth Wind & Fire created a lush, trademark sound that reveals its infectious nature in this documentary look at the group's 30-year history. Founded by Maurice White in the early 1970s, EWF broke out in mid-decade with its That's the Way of the World album. The documentary offers footage and reminiscences from the band, about its origins (White had been a Chicago session musician), its breakthrough and subsequent run as America's biggest soul band--and White's eventual burnout that led to putting the band on hiatus through much of the 1980s. It all has the homogenized sound of an authorized biography (no Behind the Music revelations here), but it gains energy every time a vintage musical performance takes center stage. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars The Best You Will Find on EW&F.......2007-05-14

Maurice White's genius comes through on this DVD. The most comprehensive look at the beginnings of Whites dream - which of course turned into the incomparable Earth Wind & Fire. From his beginnings with the Ramsey Lewis trio through forming what is probably the greatest R&B group of all time bar none. The cast White put together to form the band brought together some of the greatest vocalists and musicians, re: Philip Bailey, Al McKay, Verdine White etc ever assembled in one band - the story is amazing an interesting. If you are a Earth Wind and Fire fan - the story along with old footage of performances is a bout as comprehensive as you are going to get.

5 out of 5 stars The Best band in the world........2007-01-11

This is a wonderful look into the group's history and Maurice White's vision. It felt like it should have been longer. The old concert footage was great! Man, they used to tear it up on stage. No real discussion was done about the period during the band's breakup after Electric Universe, the solo ventures and the comeback record 'Touch The World' was not even mentioned, even in the album review section of the DVD. Nor was the '90s releases discussed. But still in all this is a wonderful story of a positive spiritual Afro-centric band that broke all barriers in the '70s. No band ever came close, except for Parliament/Funkadelic or maybe Pink Floyd, and no other band has touched the realm of professionalism and discipline since. Maurice & EWF have secured a beautiful legacy for all bands to pattern themselves after. It is interesting that they really don't recieve the recognition they should outside of their fan base. This music will live forever.

4 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Look Inside A Musical Dynasty!!.......2005-11-16

The thing that I like about this DVD is that it's
straight from the people who made the legend come to life!
Maurice, Verdine, Phillip, Larry, Al, Johnny,
Fred, Ralph, Andrew and the surviving members of
the Phoenix Horns all have their say and cover
their miraculous career / journey in somewhat
intimate detail. There are home movies of the band on tour
during their hey-day, backstage footage, etc.
as well as some well-placed snipets of the music itself.
E,W & F, to me, will always be the baddest band of all time!
Those classic albums from 1973's "Head To The Sky" to 1981's
"Raise" are etched into my DNA and still provide joy
and inspiration! A worthwhile addition to your DVD collection
if your are into documentaries of the great artists who shaped
their times and future times to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Success Story.......2005-08-09

Lots of great background info on one of my favorite groups. I though the first 10 minutes or so dragged, however, it picked up speed and became very intriguing soon after that. Lots of great clips - I learned stuff I never knew before about the group. worth ordering.

5 out of 5 stars Very indepth and Entertaining.......2005-08-01

I bought this DVD when it was first released and I must tell you that it is very indept and entertaining. It even has footage of Maurice playing drums with Ramsey Lewis. And very early shots of the original bands first performance. A must have for any EWF fan.

1 out of 5 stars Please, stop deluding yourselves..........2006-09-10

Plain and simple, there is no such thing as the group, Earth, Wind & Fire without Maurice White. Anything else is simply not genuine EWF, and true fans of their music know this.

5 out of 5 stars Their greatest hits in one DVD.......2006-02-11

I missed Maurice White, but I think the band is sounding as good and as powerful as ever. I think the dancers could have been ommited (this probably is one addition from their Las Vegas show, and don't get me wrong, the girls are beautiful and good dancers but unnecessary), and the ego of Philip Bailey minimized (just look at him and you will know what I mean) to leave room for other members to shine. My kids have listened to their music for years but now that they have seen them, they like EWF more. Great production, great sound, you will enjoy it and dance along.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, creative, great sound and video quality.......2004-11-22

The video is 1999, from A&E, and contrary to the Chicago appearance on "live by request" (whose sound was horrible...don't buy that DVD), this one was perfect.

The band plays all their major hits, about 17-18 tracks in all. Long concert. People have complained about Maurice White not being there, but Sheldon did a great job of replacing him, and Philip Bailey still strips the paint off walls with his voice. What power and range!

The band is awesome (I'm a drummer, and would have loved to see Sonny Emory, but Gordon Campbell is equally a master on the drums, and actually sounds like Emory in his style).

This DVD is hot...and in DTS 5.1 sound....can't beat it. Buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars NICE CONCERT!!!!.......2004-09-22

THIS IS PRETTY GOOD. I ENJOY THIS CONCERT. I JUST DON'T LIKE THE INTERRUPTIONS. THE GROUP PERFORMED THEIR SONGS WELL. THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY EARTH,WIND,AND FIRE FAN.

5 out of 5 stars UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-14

Long-time die-hard EWF fan. I have done their music live, there is no greater musical high. This is a superbly produced DVD. The arrangements take EWF to the highest levels yet. Musicanship (although not all-original band) is awesome. Sound and video technology is near perfect. If all my favorite bands did this quality of DVD production, I would never get anything done.

Description

This briliant performance was recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum, December 30 and 31, 1981, with the sound, the hard-driving rhythms, the soothing melodies, the scintillating horns and special effects that have dazzled concertgoers around the world. Maurice White, the founder and driving force behind Earth, Wind & Fire has done it again: blending the energy, music and creativity that is Earth, Wind & Fire.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of overdub but still is GREAT music.......2006-02-27

I've watch this concert in VHS format while i was a little kid. I didn't notice back then that this concert had a lot of overdubs in it. It did dissapoint me a bit after I found out about the overdubs, but if you just ignore that a lot of the sound did not sync with the players movement, and just focusing on the sound of the MUSIC they produced, it's a GREAT piece of music anyway. I think one of the best they've made. And the live vibe is still there despite all the overdubs. So, appreciate the great music, and just enjoy the picture as a bonus...

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Time Capsule.......2006-02-12

This DVD is a fantastic time machine back to 1981, to the peak of the performing career of EWF. All original Band, original mixing and song layout. However, i think theres something to be said about the less-than-perfect sound quality. I attribute that to the fact that the recording is so old. Other than that, it doesnt bother me that much. THe DVD is fantastic, and wildly entertaining, as EWF's elaborate and flamboyant 1980's costumes light up the stage almost as much as the energy of Phillip Bailey, Ralph Johnson, Maurice White and Verdine White.

Ill recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to see EWF in their heyday, however if youre looking for truly dazzling musicianship, then probably stick to the later DVD's after they've hired Morris Pleasure as their musical director.

Overall, I can't give this DVD any sort of bad review though, because what you're buying here is more of a "look into the glorious past".

9 out of 10 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Fake and Corny........2005-08-14

First of all, let me preface my review by telling you that I am a huge EWF fan. But this video performance leaves me stone cold. Not only is the musical performance faked. But the performance itself looks staged.

It looks like a few actual live shots were added into the video along with the mostly staged shots. And as a result, the video (excluding "That's the way of the World") comes off rather insipid. That's a shame because EWF has always had a special bond with the audience. That's mostly missing here.

Also, the Darth Vader/Superman act looks rather silly. Although the laser holographic Eagle is fantastic. I remember attending the same tour and that opening was much longer and LOUDER than presented on the video.

EWF's videography contains far more exciting performances- like the "Live in Japan" DVD. A better option is the "Chicago/EWF Live at the Greek" DVD (no Maurice though). Or better still, get the SACD version of "Gratitude" and use your imagination.

4 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST CONCERT ON DVD!.......2005-03-18

I gave it 4 stars because, it's only 1 hour long,
and it doesn't have, After the love is gone. Why
is this still the only EWF concert out, of them
in their prime? I know there's more great footage
out there! You can buy this dvd for $15.29 at
([...]) Sorry Amazon, but you're
over priced on this item.

4 out of 5 stars Missing elements!.......2004-06-23

Excellent representation of the GREATEST BAND Ever! However, No Kalimba, NO Levitation, No Pyramid, The essence is missing! EW&F Definitely "Showed Up and Out" on this concert; Just without those three unique elements to their show....leaves a bit to be desired. If You can get that All-n-All concert tour on DVD, I'd definitely buy that also.

2 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!.......2005-04-10

I bought this concert 3 months ago. It sucks! First of all there's no Maurice (NUF SED)! How can you sing songs like, Loves
Holiday, After the love is gone, September... without Maurice?
YOU CAN'T! I've been a huge fan since 76, their best concert on dvd, is still the one from 81, when they had all their original members. Save yourself some money, don't buy this concert!

2 out of 5 stars Obsolete, except if you're a fanatic collector.......2004-12-02

Great playlist, trashed by an awful sound-mix. What was the guy doing in charge of the mix? Not paying attention, that's for sure. Mostly same show (solo's & breaks) as the Live by Request DVD, it's getting boring now. There's actually one good reason to buy this DVD. Sonny.E is fantastic on drums. Overall very disappointing. If only they had footage of the Live in Rio concerts. I keep hoping. For now stick with the 1981 Oakland DVD, or better just play the CD's.

5 out of 5 stars EARTH WIND AND FIRE AT THEIR BEST.......2004-11-28

This dvd really showcase Garry Bias Saxs talent. EW&F plays many
songs right after another which I enjoyed. The dvd also showcase
Sonny Emory drums talent to include Sheldon Reynolds Guitar playing. Many of the songs are change at some point which makes
the song sound interesting and fun. I think this dvd is a must buy for all EW&F fan and for those who want to see the most talented musicains on the face of the earth and universe. Finally Verdine White bass licks are very noticable in this dvd,so go out and get this dvd today.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-17

This cd is very dosappointing. The v-clips are horrible. Not in line with the greatness of this band.

5 out of 5 stars Shame On MTV!.......2005-03-03

And that for not allowing these very imaginative video clips on their network for various racist reasons. The earliest of these clips are basically enhanced live performances up until 1980's 'Let Me Talk'-my favorite on this set that makes great use of the blue screen with floating images of symbols and people."Let's Groove" is a similarly colorful affair while "Fall In Love With Me" involves a colorful egyptian motif. The latter day videos like "Magnetic","System Of Survival" and "Evil Roy" deal with social commentary while "Thinking Of You" has a certain street charm.Sadly the video for "Heritage" is also here, from a time when EWF were trying to pander down to the new jacks. But even that video with it's positive message of empowerment is excellent."September 99" is better with a visually enhanced version of the original 1978 clip (also included earlier in the set) and a housish mix that's very faithful to the original.Even though the live footage is for the most part from the 1982 HBO concert that's commonly available the unseen live clip of "After The Love Has Gone" is a treat! But sadly,as I've said before today's blue and brown toned, shamelessly T&A oriented videos of Usher,Aguilara and others CANNOT HOLD A CANDLE to these examples of artful videography designed to do more then merely sell a product. No one outside of Outkast these days could even equal this accomplishment!

5 out of 5 stars Earth, Wind, & Fire-A Treat For Old School Music Lovers.......2005-03-02

For over 30 years, Earth, Wind & Fire inspired generations of musicians with their unique blend of R&B, rock, jazz, funk, world music, and soul. Founded by multitalented musician Maurice White, the band found much success in 1970s with their eclectic sound and theatrical stage presence. While successful in drawing audiences in with extravagant costumes, the band never let their image overshadow their music. THE COLLECTION features videos and live performances of songs created during the years they were signed to Columbia Records. Songs include "Serpentine Fire," "Boogie Wonderland," and "September," among many others.
