Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with The Departed, hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since Casino. Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, The Departed is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that The Departed is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.

Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but The Departed is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson's profane swagger is too much "Jack" and not enough "Costello," he's still a joy to watch, especially in a film that's additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. The Departed also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn't exist without them. Powered by Scorsese's trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini's operas), The Departed may not be perfect, but it's one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese's commercially rocky career. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg star in Martin Scorsese's new crime drama "The Departed." "The Departed" is set in South Boston where the state police force is waging an all-out war to take down the city's top organized crime ring. The key is to end the reign of powerful mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) from the inside. A young rookie, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Costello's mob. While Billy is working to gain Costello's trust, another young cop, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is among a handful of elite officers whose mission is to bring Costello down. But what his superiors don't know is that Colin is working for Costello, keeping the crime boss one step ahead of the police. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operation he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin find themselves in constant danger of being caught-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

What a great cast--- Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Nicholson....they are all just awesome and give superior performances. It's a thriller, a game of cat and mouse in which a Boston mob moss is trying to use his infiltrator on the police force to find out the identity of the officer who has gone undercover and infiltrated the mafia. It is a thriller that keeps you going till the very end and I did NOT expect the ending.

You must see this movie. I've seen Martin Scorsese's other films but this one triumphs as the best one so far. Thank goodness he won an Oscar for it, it deserved it!!

4 out of 5 stars A few loose ends, but a great flick.......2007-06-15

Like most people, I watched this movie mainly just because of the impressive star power of the cast. (Which, in our celebrity obsessed culture, is probably just as good a reason to watch a movie as any). And it is quite an impressive cast: Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and directed by Martin Scorese....Now is that a cast or what? And I know that usually in movies with too many big names somebody ends up being under-utilized, but I thought all the main actors in this movie were given at least a couple great scenes to chew the screen up.

Some researching on the internet reveals that this movie is an American remake of the Hong Kong flick "Infernal Affairs". (I've not seen "Infernal Affairs", but I've seen the previous at least. It always looked kind of interesting.)

"The Departed" is set in Boston and revolves around the Irish-American culture and the Irish mafia. It doesn't come close to the level of pyscho-analysis that "The Godfather" did for the Italian mafia, but there are various throw away lines referencing the Irish-American experience: "Twenty years after an Irishman could't get a job, we had the presidency. May he rest in peace."

The plot gets a little complicated but basically Jack Nicholson is a Irish Mafia boss. Leonardo DiCaprio is an undercover cop infiltrating the mafia. Matt Damon is an undercover mafia who has infiltrated the police department. As the movie progresses various betrayals and changes of allegiance follow.

I don't want to give away too much to anyone who hasn't seen this movie, but at various points I thought it should have been obvious who the respective moles were. And it seemed like everyone was getting pretty sloppy and getting away with it. But that's Hollywood for you I guess.

Also (and again, I hope I'm not giving too much away here. Spolier alert) the climax of the movie revolves around a taped conversation. You know, it turns out that something one of the characters said was being tape recorded and he didn't know it, and he said a lot of self-implicating things. Like we've seen a million other times in a million other movies and TV shows.

I suppose this is the most obvious way to end a story like this (which is why it's been used so many times before), but perhaps because it is the most obvious it is also the laziest. For my two cents I would liked to have seen a more interesting ending.

But the movie definately held my attention for the time I was watching it.

2 out of 5 stars "Goodfellas," some "Kill Bill," with a pinch of "Pulp" and a hint of "Bourne"...........2007-06-15

Departed didn't seem to offer anything new. Once again, Scorcese proves he is the master of blood spatter, body count, gratuitious volence, and signing big Hollywood stars.

The stories of the respective "rats" run absolutely parallel (including the same love interest), so the plot sounded interesting to me.

But not even 1/3 into the movie you find yourself wondering how can the cops AND the bad guys be so unbelievably stupid, and then you begin to associate that sentiment to the movie.

The Special Investigation cops know they have a spy in their midst, but they never suspect the guy who grew up with the crime boss and who always makes a cell phone call to "Dad" just before the raid! The criminals know they have a spy in their midst, but they never suspect the former cop who just recently joined their gang, and who has never really proven his loyalty.

The behavior of most of the characters never seems to make much sense (including the women, who seek out unpredictable, ugly and violent men), thus the touch of the surreal/fantasy akin to "Bill." Then at the end, it turns out that nearly every character is actually a spy for some organization other than the one they're currently with.

And what happened to the envelope, or the girl? Most of the time, particularly during the second half of the movie, everything just seemed silly, a la "Pulp."

Two stars - one for the panty sex scene, and one for the rat (one of only a few mammals to avoid the spray of bullets) that artfully scurries away (did you notice it on the balcony railing?) at the very end.

4 out of 5 stars Mary's review of The Departed.......2007-06-11

I think Martin Scorsese has waited a long time to be honored for his work, and winning the Oscar for the Departed was a fittting tribute. This crime drama pits the good guys and the bad guys in each others' camps and keeps you wondering right up to the end. It's good to see Matt Damon stretching his acting chops to be the bad guy. His baby-face looks usually lend him to be the good guy, which he does quite well. But playing the smarmy weasel in The Departed works well, too, since he is the last to be suspected. A resounding "Well done" to all of the cast and to Mr. Scorsese.

3 out of 5 stars Best Scorcese Film Since Goodfellas.......2007-06-05

The Departed is pretty good, but not because its large cast is good or because of Martin Scorcese's direction.

Its good because the original Chinese film its copied from, Infernal Affairs (2004) was a superior plot.

The story is about two impersonators who have infiltrated the Boston crime scene. One is employed by the Police Department to find any moles who might have penetrated the force. The other works for Boston Mobster Frank Costello, not related at all to the Mafioso who rapped his knuckles on a congressional desk in the fifties during a televised hearing about organized crime.

Jack Nicholson plays Costello and wrecks the movie pretty much. In interviews, Nicholson said he wasn't inclined to be in the film because the Costello role was little more than a cameo. But Scorcese had the part built up for Nicholson, hurting the film in the process.

The film is a tightly wound tale of intrigue about moles inside the Boston department. Leo De Caprio and Matt Damon play the spies. De Caprio is better than Damon but not by much. De Caprio knots up his forehead too often in order to be taken seriously as a slightly troubled cop.

There's a certain amount of advanced technology to sleuth the mystery the audience already knows the answer to. But this is a great script.

Jack Nicholson's Costello is over the top, damaging a pretty good film substantially. De Caprio is off his mark too.

But this is the best Scorcese film in years, better than Gangs of New York or the Aviator, both of which were directed by Scorcese and both of which featured Leonardo De Caprio.

Nicholson is so awful and such a gargoyle, he reminds me of Burl Ives, who was terrible as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958. Nicholson is almost always miscast and overacting these days. I think the last decent film he did was the Postman Always Rings Twice in roughly 1980. He hasn't been good in anything since, but they keep paying him as if he's a bankable star.

Other actors in what is supposed to be an ensemble film include Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alex Baldwin, Vera Farmiga and Krista Dalton. Dalton is a newcomer and is quite good. But Baldwin, Farmiga and Wahlberg don't get enough time to act with Nicholson chewing scenery all the time.

The film, due to its extraordinary plot and a series of film surprises, is quite good, despite everything.

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation.

The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and American History X partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment, and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect. No matter how strained their collaboration may have been, both Kaye and Norton can be proud to have created a film that addresses the issue of racism with dramatically forceful impact. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Edward Norton's Academy Award nominated role as a White Supremist who sees the error of his ways while jailed for murder. Unfortunately, he leaves prison to find his brother (Edward Furlong) heading down the same path.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you think!.......2007-06-10

I was skeptical when I first heard about this movie, as I was originally mis-informed as to what it was really about! I am definetly glad I finally sat down and watched this film.

After seeing this film, it has quickly become one of my favorite films that I have ever seen. As others have said, Edward Norton plays his role so well, you may actually find yourself partly agreeing with what he says. The message of the film is very well done, and the ending is one of the most shocking I have seen.

Excellent acting, directing, and story-telling. This is a film to own, and a film that has become a classic within the world of movie-making!

2 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-05-23

A waste of a fine performance by Norton. The film is an idealistic mess. Trite and melodramatic. I like the ending, because it completely skewers audience expectations, but beyond that, the film feels as if it has been patched together at the last minute. Segments don't entirely match, and most of the acting is uneven. The story is straight out of a tv movie.
If you are one of those typical film students who wears a trenchcoat, has a goatee and won't shut up about Clerks and Fight Club, this will probably be your favorite movie.

5 out of 5 stars XXXX..........2007-04-03

The fear of foreign races or people, and it evolving into an actual phobia, an intense and irrational dread, in other terms, racism, has been around since primitive man began forming tribes, millions of years ago. American History X examines racism in the context of present day neo-Nazism, and similar to the German Nazis of the 30's and 40's all foreigners are blamed for everything wrong with the State. The solution to unemployment, a high cost of living, rocketing welfare and rising crime is to jettison all immigrants, foreigners, from the country so that the original people, the white's in America or the Aryan race in 30's Germany can flourish as they are truly destined to do. This notion is one of the foundational tenets of fascism, and added to this, violence and war is the only method to achieve a `pure' flourishing State.

American History X is a strong film presenting the arguments for the Right and the Left where, for the most part, the propositions on both sides have valid points, however, it is impossible to argue a subject as complex as immigration, rising crime and the cost of living by blaming these situations on a particular race of people. In fact, the argument is absurd because there are always exceptions, and as this important film points out with force and powerful emotion, racism is about hate, fear and personal anger, projected on a generality because it is convenient, a scapegoat for a lack of control and responsibility.

Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) is an intelligent young man but somewhere along the line began to hate Black American's, Asian American's et al, and under the tutelage of an older and influential White Supremist, (Stacy Keach), becomes the leader of a `skinhead' gang in Venice Beach, trashing foreign owned grocery stores to finally be jailed for the brutal murder of two teenaged Black Americans because they attempted to steal his car. Derek is strong, passionate, and terribly angry and now, a cold blooded killer and his younger brother, Danny, (Edward Furlong) idolises him.

Edward Furlong as Danny was perfect casting as he has a sensitive and forlorn, lost gaze, almost innocent because he loves his brother so much, and when his brother is released from prison with a different point of view, at first goes a little crazy, but will go along because he worships and loves him. Of course this makes the ending that much more forbidding and terribly moving. Furlong is a talented actor and is restrained in this picture, resulting in his performance being totally believable.

A film about such a controversial subject matter cannot avoid presenting a message for the viewer. In the case of American History X, racism is not an innate condition but a learned one, passed on from generation to generation.

American History X is not a good film but a truly great one and should be viewed by all concerned about our society and the hate and fear it contains...

i was eagerly looking forward to catching up with this movie id missed at the time of its release, esp since im a fan of both edward norton and eddie furlong (even as just an acxtor, lol). however, this was an overwrought and overthought mess. there is nothing here that hasnt been covered (sans the dirty language) in a slew of tv movies dating back to the episode of "twilight zone" where dennis hopper met hitler. and a bald eddie furlong is not much fun to look at. norton is less and less interesting an actor as time goes along, but at least here he was still trying.

"Cruising"

Perception

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

It is hard to believe that William Friedkin's "Cruising" is already 27 years old. What is amazing is that it has not been released on DVD but rumor has it that it will be soon. Friedkin
has recut it and is showing it again at this year's Cannes Film Festival so I suppose that is a sign that its release is imminent.
When "Cruising" came out it created quite a furor because of the way it depicted gay men as "they are". People saw masculine men dancing and kissing and participating in S&M activities and this was something that many had never seen before. The movie violated the picture people had of gay men as being effeminate and weak. The movie broke ground by showing that gay men, in particular the leather subculture, are real people and have some influence. The movie also showed the interiors of gay bars and the activity there as it was.
This is a brutal film and definitely affects the viewer as it combines murder, mystery, sex and subculture. Viewed today it still shocks and many still consider it to be homophobic by depicting gay men as being sexually obsessed whereas those many of the men who are members of the leather scene claim that it is accurate. It is important to remember that the movie was made before AIDS when sexual excess was extremely popular.
I do not think that people were fair to the movie--it is not a look at gay culture as a whole--it uses the leather scene to show how one man's life is affected by his work. Al Pacino as a cop investigating a murder gives an outstanding performance.
William Friedkin is known for making mysterious, dark films and he has done himself proud with this film. The controversy around it brought about a dialog which led to a better understanding of the gay community and if had done nothing else, that would have been enough. But "Cruising" is also a good movie even with all of the controversy.
This is not an easy film to watch. The characters are not the kind of people that we like and for some reason the film seems incomplete. I have heard that 40 minutes of film were cut due
to censorship problems but some of that is being restored to the film with the new cut. This should clarify any ambiguity of the film. What the film really seems to be about is the thin lie between good and evil.
"Cruising" is more than a movie--it is an experience and a provocative one at that. It has no soul and it is dark and physical. It is a riveting ad dark look at something many know nothing about. It is a sexual thriller in which Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is sent undercover into the gay community to find a serial killer who stalks the leather bars. The grittiness of the film reflects the scenes it pictures. This is not a gay film--it is a horror film, a very tense thriller with remarkable performances. It is also important as it pushed the door wide open for others to come in and take up filming the gay community. The plot may ramble but then so does life---like the movie, life is all over the place.

4 out of 5 stars you loved it or hated it.......2007-04-13

Cruising is an offensive thriller and that's precisely what Friedkin wanted it to be, despite the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie. I was 13 when this came out. I remember it was the talk of the town for a few weeks before disappearing from theaters. Some of the scenes are so vile and make one's stomach turn. In 1980 homosexuality was not quite as accepted as it it today, and it was pretty much okay to call yourself a "homophobe." This movie played on those fears that people had- and some still have. While it's undeniable that this type of underworld existed- and I'm sure still exists- I think the movie implied that this is how most gay men probably live.
I do agree with an earlier reviewer who said that the movie gets more interesting after watching it several times. By the way, did you notice who plays one of the police detectives?? it's that guy from "Married With Children."

4 out of 5 stars Why all the angst over this film & others like it?.......2007-02-24

"Crusing'"was a film that was both a crime drama and a social statement..it succeeded on both levels, but perhaps because it succeeded as a social statement it took unnecessary, politically correct heat...A nutcase is dismembering gay men...the police call upon a new detective, played by Al Pacino,to find him by faking it as a homosexual..Pacino follows leads through the'80s leather bar scene and,in the process, may begiving in to latent gay strains existing within himself...
The gay community was outraged by this film,as if,for starters, there could never be a gay murderer who randomly slaughters and dismembers other gays...Flapdoodle...there have been quite a few real-life homosexual murderers, whose mentality and whose crimes are every inch as disgusting as the ones depicted here, but, worse, unlike the killer depicted here, they were real...John Wayne Gacy comes to mind, among others...Then there have been the snipes directed towards Pacino, especially his dance scene..Now,honestly,does ANYONE out there think that, for an apparent straight guy,a cop no less(no matter that, latently,he may be otherwise)becoming a gay overnight,as it were,is as easy as turning a light-switch on and off?I defy any of these critics, straight or gay,to just up and relocate themselves into that other culture and see if they just fit right in right away...
Films that say or suggest uncomfortable truths about "fringe"cultures seem vulnerable to attacks by the politically correct police force out there...There can be no stereotypes...Gays must ALWAYS appear to be"just like the rest of us"even if,by definition, they are not...likewise there can be no cheap jews,no drunk Irish,no ignorant or violent blacks, ect ect...Apparently wish-fulfillment is more important than reality to the thought police...This film suggested that maybe the gay lifestyle was not all that it was cranked up to be...Straights recoiled from some of the representations because they were, well, offensive, while gays saw these same scenes as representing the loophole truths that they would prefer not to have been made so public..
When this film finally does get to DVD see it...it is hard-edged,and uncompromising, but it it worth the price of admission...

5 out of 5 stars PUT IT OUT ON DVD !!!.......2006-08-03

I saw this movie when it originally came out
and I was blown away by it.I got sick of waiting
for it to come to dvd so I transferred it onto
a blank disc just so it wouldn't deteriorate any
further.
How do I begin to describe this movie. When it
first came out it shocked both the gay and
straight community.I can understand the shock
of the straight community and the anger of the
gay community.
It was the 1980's and most gays were in and
not out of the closet. They needed positive images
of themselves to be projected to the straights.
So far there had been The Boys in the Band (1970)
and Le Cage Aux Folles ( 1979).So from these two
movies, gays were either suicidally unhappy or
limp wristed fruity tuities. And then along comes
Cruising. To state at the beginning of the movie
that it is not representative of the entire gay
community was a political move engedered to make
the gays less angry about it.It failed miserably.
Here's why.A whack job is knocking off gay men
in leather bars.( straights were probably saying
so what's wrong with that and what's a leather bar).
Al Pacino a straight cop is asked to infiltrate
the gay community posing as a gay leather freak.
The longer Pacino spends time in this sub culture
the stranger he acts with his girlfriend. He also
seems to be losing touch with his own reality.
The scenes in the leather bar are as scary as hell.
Scenes with f*** F****** and every one taking poppers,
along with the coloured hankerchief signals is enough
to turn most straights into anti-gays if they weren't
already.( I must say however that Pacino trying to
dance in the leather bar scene is hysterically funny)
In the end Pacino really loses it and kills someone.
I guess that's what happens to straights when they
try to enter the gay community. ( I'm joking)
Why did I like this movie?Because it did give a
true portrayal of the leather scene sub culture.
It wasn't one of those black water melon movies
that make todays black people cringe at.
Al Pacino does give a compelling performance of
a man who is losing himself in this sub culture
life style.
Is this movie worth seeing ? DEFINATELY

BRING IT OUT ON DVD !!!

The intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigor of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the antisocietal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of J.T. Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter.

Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams.

Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. --Jenny Brown

Tyrin Turner may not have broken out into stardom as was initially expected, but his work in Menace II Society is one of the more powerful cinematic debuts. The film, from the brother writer-director team of Allen and Albert Hughes, chronicles life in the Los Angeles 'hood. Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding Boyz N the Hood, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers' forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie. They are so credible--occasionally frighteningly so--that the repressive universe of violent ghetto life is captured effectively. Life as portrayed here--and no doubt accurately so--is both figuratively and literally narrow. As a very young boy, Caine witnesses his dad murdered over something inconsequential, and his mom OD. His is a world where respect comes from intimidation, power from violence. Despite his understanding of right and wrong (values passed on by a good friend, his kind grandparents, a caring teacher), his life and its entrapments are too much to overcome. --N.F. Mendoza

Trying to explain the wildly accelerated plot of this non-stop action thriller would be like convincing Quentin Tarantino to retell the saga of The Sopranos in 15-minutes or less. Don't misunderstand, Running Scared wastes little time on the nuanced details that make the violent, narratively precise, and intricately characterized world of The Sopranos so stylish and compelling. But boy, does it have style to spare, not to mention plenty of violence, narrative, and a cast of characters that all engage in a heady battle for your attention. Paul Walker has the unenviable task of fleshing out the role of a low-level mob flunky who's assigned to get rid of a gun that was involved in a bloody drug deal gone bad. When he botches even that little job, it's not just his wife who gets mad at him. Creepily threatened kids, put-upon women who save the day, and an array of pimps, hookers, sleazy gangsters and dirty cops straight ouuta central casting are all part of the intricate jumble of the story (not to mention bullet-time close-ups and a nifty scene that imparts the inherent danger of hockey pucks in a whole new light). It's hard to believe this outlandish piece of ultraviolence came from writer/director Wayne Kramer, the same creative mind that gave us the smooth little caper flick The Cooler. Don't think about that too hard though. Considering the madcap rush of Running Scared's wicked fun and inspired lunacy, you won't have the time to anyway. --Ted Fry

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen. --Bret Fetzer
