Sweet baby Jesus, we thank you for blessing Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with the talent to create a NASCAR comedy as hilarious as Talladega Nights. The so-called "Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is hardly flawless in fact it's not always firing on all cylinders but with comedy star Ferrell and director McKay still hot from the success of their previous comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, most of this 108-minute spoof of oval-track racing is so knee-slappin' funny that you can't help but surrender to the stupidity.

Obviously, Ferrell's the shining star, and his portrayal of lead-footed pit-crew-member-turned-#1 NASCAR champion Ricky "I Wanna Go Fast" Bobby (how can you not love that name?) is spot-on perfect, righteously spoofing the entirety of NASCAR culture without insulting its oft-ridiculed roots in redneck bootlegging of a bygone era. You could even argue that Talladega Nights is truer to NASCAR than Tom Cruise's Days of Thunder, and it's certainly more entertaining, especially when you add John C. Reilly as Ricky's life-long pal, teammate, and eventual rival Cal Naughton, Jr. (together they're nicknamed "Shake 'n Bake"), and Sacha Baron Cohen (from Da Ali G Show and Borat) as gay French "Formula Un" driver-turned NASCAR rival Jean Girrard, to a stellar cast including Molly Shannon, Greg Germann, Amy Adams and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Sure, it's mostly a showcase for Ferrell's loud, over-the-top antics and nonsensical non sequiturs (like cameo appearances by Elvis Costello and Mos Def), but with Ferrell behind the wheel, Talladega Nights rolls into victory lane with fuel to spare, and there's one final bit of comedy (with a tip of the hat to William Faulkner) for those who sit through the credits. --Jeff Shannon

The fastest man on four wheels, Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. A big, hairy American winning machine, Ricky has everything a dimwitted daredevil could want, a luxurious mansion, a smokin' hot wife and all the fast food he can eat. But Ricky's turbo-charged lifestyle hits an unexpected speed bump when he's bested by flamboyant Euro-idiot Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen, TV's "Da Ali G Show") and reduced to a fear-ridden wreck. Losing his wife and job to best bud and fellow fool, Cal Naughton, Jr. (John C. Reilly), Ricky must kick some serious asphalt if he's to get his career back on the track, beat Girard and reclaim his fame and fortune. 'Cause as Ricky Bobby always says, IF YOU AIN'T FIRST, YOU'RE LAST!

The magic of music, the power of love, the evils of money, and the horror of genocide are the weighty themes tackled in Gloomy Sunday, a moving German-Hungarian film from director/co-writer Rolf Schubel. Released theatrically in 1999, it's said to have been "inspired by actual events," and it is true that the title song, written in the '30s by Rezso Seress (with Hungarian lyrics by Laszlo Javor), was a worldwide hit in its day; it's also a fact that the song has since been covered dozens of times, by artists ranging from Billie Holiday to Bjork and Elvis Costello. As for the suggestion that "Gloomy Sunday" was banned after being connected to multiple suicides, including the composer's, that's a bit more dicey. In any case, it plays a pivotal role in the love story set in Budapest during the ascension of the Third Reich and the onset of the Holocaust. Restaurant owner Laszlo (Joachim Krol) is in love with Ilona, his hostess (Erika Marozsán), a dark-eyed beauty who plays men as easily as Horowitz plays "Chopsticks"; she loves him as well, but that doesn't mean she won't welcome Andras (Stefano Dionisi), the restaurant's new piano player, into her bed as well. Everyone seems to handle that with admirable equanimity, at least until the young German Hans (Ben Becker) inserts himself into the scene. Having been rejected by Ilona, Hans throws himself into the Danube, only to be rescued by Laszlo; when he assures his savior that "We'll meet again," we know that's not necessarily a good thing. Indeed, when Hans returns to Budapest, he's a Nazi colonel. Things get hairy in a hurry after that: Laszlo is Jewish, Ilona still doesn't want Hans, and we're left to discover if the German officer is either another Oskar Schindler or a heartlessly venal criminal loyal only to himself. All of this is played out against the backdrop of a lovely city, with costumes, art direction, and a palette of rich, warm colors creating a convincing period feel. The DVD has no bonus features, but a cursory search of the 'net will turn up multiple versions of the title tune, a sweet but melancholy melody that sounds, as one character puts it, "as if someone were saying something you don't want to hear" but know to be true. --Sam Graham

            Description

Gloomy Sunday, winner of major German film awards and an art-house favorite that ran 70 weeks in Boston, hits all the right notes with its poignant, glowingly shot tale set in Budapest during the Holocaust and, like Schindler's List and The Pianist, filled with the passion and pain of that tragic era. The song itself - recorded by Billie Holliday and other greats - is the stuff of legend, reportedly having a fateful real-life impact similar to that shown on screen. But it's love's power that is ultimately at the heart of this acclaimed film. And from the opening scene to the deft twist ending, that power is extraordinary.

What does it tell us that Sam Peckinpah's most joyous and life-affirming movie is also his most underappreciated? The Ballad of Cable Hogue was made in that singular moment when, having just completed The Wild Bunch, Peckinpah knew he was back in the game as a feature-film director; and before anyone (including Peckinpah himself?) had an inkling of how completely he was about to redefine the Western genre, contemporary American filmmaking, and his own personal legend.

Cable Hogue is a splendiferous entertainment: a grufty Western tall tale, a lusty comedy, and also (in critic Kathleen Murphy's phrase) "a musical about the economic and emotional complexities of capitalism." Its title character--Jason Robards in a great, exuberant gift of a performance--is an ornery varmint left by two scurrilous partners (L.Q. Jones and Strother Martin) to die in the desert. Through pure cussedness and what may be dumb luck, may be divine intervention, he "finds water where it wasn't" and survives. Nothing to do now but settle back, let his waterhole--the only one on the stage line between Deaddog and Gila--make him a rich man, and await the day those two old partners drop by his waystation.

Besides such Peckinpah regulars as Slim Pickens, R.G. Armstrong, and Gene Evans, the movie features Stella Stevens in her career-best role as Hildy, Hogue's best reason for getting into town now and again, and David Warner, an itinerant preacher and full-time lech who becomes his soulmate. Lucien Ballard photographed, and there's a charming song score (by Richard Gillis) whose neglect is as mystifying as that of the film. Above all, there is Sam Peckinpah exulting in the lyrical, heart-filling possibilities of making a motion picture, trying just about anything, and finding it beautiful. This film was his personal favorite. --Richard T. Jameson

              1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time........2007-06-20

This is a bad movie. Being a NASCAR fan I thought I'd enjoy the movie but, alas, this was not to be. I freely admit to not being much of a Ferrell fan. Movies like this are the reason why! It isn't good parody. It isn't good satire. It isn't good comedy. It isn't good anything! Forget it.

              5 out of 5 stars Don't say those words........2007-06-18

There's only a handful of words you hope never to catch yourself saying without a due period of reflection: 'I love you.' 'That dress makes you look fat.' 'Have you put on a few pounds?' 'Nobody will notice.'

And then of course: 'This is the funniest movie I've ever seen.'

I can hardly stop myself. I'm gonna' say those words about Will Ferrell's TALLADEGA NIGHTS. THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY.

I live in a town that titles itself 'the racing capital of the world'. In fact, I was out at the Brickyard yesterday to watch McLaren continue its resurgence via a Hamilton-Alonso one-two finish in the United States Grand Prix.

There are three big races each year at Indy: The 500, Nascar's Allstate 400, and yesterday's F1 race. Each draws a completely different audience, each dismissive of the demographics of the race that came just before theirs and the one that comes after.

That's the dynamic upon which Ferrell's Rick Bobby and Sacha Baron Cohen's irrepressible F1 convert to Nascar Jean Girard play. They rightly play to howls of laughter.

Ferrell's and John Reilly's Cal Naughton, Jr. (even the name is perfect) hilariously draw out the bisyllables of Southern Fried culture. Even their motto - 'Shake and bake!' - is uproariously Southern.

The movie's humor is a bit crude and may push the boundaries of the PG-13 rating of the in-theatre version.

But it really doesn't get any funnier than this.

              I'm gonna say it!

The funniest movie I've ever seen ...

              5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny!.......2007-06-12

Will Ferrell is a f---ing genious! The funniest movie I've seen in years. Ironic, spot-on and funny!

              3 out of 5 stars Adams Chronicles.......2007-06-07

We liked JUNEBUG so much that we consulted IMDB to find out what Amy Adams was up to next, and the database spat out the name of TALLADEGA NIGHTS. To our surprise, Frabk Hoyt Taylor, who memorably played the fiery, pathetic old "outsider artist" specializing in crudely drawn portraits of Civil War genitals, was said to feature in TALLADEGA also. Well so there we were and for a few minutes we might almost have been watching JUNEBUG 2, for the first movie ends with a young couple reuniting after some disputes, driving down a long Southern highway in the moonlight, while TALLADEGA NIGHTS opens up with Gary Cole and Jane Lynch driving down a lonesome road, but after that the two pictures veer wildly, and to tell you the truth, Amy Adams was admirable in JUNEBUG, but lousy in this one, and as for crazy old Frank Hoyt Tayler, we never did spot him! Even his own mother, if he had one, would be hard pressed to pick him out to the sea of hillbilly humanity that is THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY.

The love story, and that's stretching it, is supposed to be a little like the one in THE SURE THING, where our hero is so knocked out by the sensual appeal of his dream girl, that he doesn't notice that his plain little girl pal is really the one for him. That's a hard part to play, the caterpillar who becomes a butterfly when she pulls her T-shirt up over her chest, and Amy Adams does it as if under protest, gritting her teeth and despising herself and her agents for allowing her to undergo what Meryl Streep never had to. That said, the movie is hilarious and the other girl, Leslie Bibb, seems to glory in being dumb as a post, like the ex-wife in MY NAME IS EARL, she is having some serious fun.

When Ricky Bobby has to choose between the two girls, and chooses the caterpillar over the sex bomb, the movie deflates a little, like a tire what picked up a rusty ole nail.

              5 out of 5 stars Disquised Heart-Felt Comedy.......2007-06-04

Though the first quarter of the movie is just classic Will Ferrell comedy, it becomes a heart-felt comedy of a man going through a midlife crisis, and refinding himself, his estranged family, and deciding who his friends really are.

Ricky Bobby is the fastest, baddest race car driver NASCAR has seen in years. He marries one of his biggest fans since she is hot. They have two rotten, (though extremely comical,) misbehaved kids. He has his lifelong best friend as his racing partner, and it seems life couldn't be any better for Ricky Bobby. That is until a French raceman comes and takes everything away.

His wife leaves him for his best friend, and he loses his house and job, forcing him and his kids to go live with his mother. His mother takes over his kids lives, changing them from demons to angels, while Ricky gets reconnected with his former-racing father.

The movie has plenty of good laughs, and is never slow, and seems much shorter then its two hour length.

Here's how director Sam Peckinpah described his motivation behind The Wild Bunch at the time of the film's 1969 release: "I was trying to tell a simple story about bad men in changing times. The Wild Bunch is simply what happens when killers go to Mexico. The strange thing is you feel a great sense of loss when these killers reach the end of the line." All of these statements are true, but they don't begin to cover the impact that Peckinpah's film had on the evolution of American movies. Now the film is most widely recognized as a milestone event in the escalation of screen violence, but that's a label of limited perspective. Of course, Peckinpah's bloody climactic gunfight became a masterfully directed, photographed, and edited ballet of graphic violence that transcended the conventional Western and moved into a slow-motion realm of pure cinematic intensity. But the film--surely one of the greatest Westerns ever made--is also a richly thematic tale of, as Peckinpah said, "bad men in changing times." The Wild Bunch is a masterpiece that should not be defined strictly in terms of its violence, but as a story of mythic proportion, brimming with rich characters and dialogue and the bittersweet irony of outlaw traditions on the wane. --Jeff Shannon

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid may be the most beautiful and ambitious film that Sam Peckinpah ever made. The time is 1881. Powerful interests want New Mexico tamed for their brand of progress, and Sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) is commissioned to rid the territory of his old gunfighting comrades. He serves fair notice to William Bonney--Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson)--and his Fort Sumter cronies, but it's not in their nature, or his, to go quietly. Peckinpah's theme, more than ever, is the closing of the frontier and the nature of the loss that that entails. But this time his vision takes him beyond genre convention, beyond history and legend, to the bleeding heart of myth--and surely of himself. This is one strange and original movie. In 1973 most American reviewers responded by panning it and deriding its director, whom they saw as having betrayed the promise of Ride the High Country, been swept up in his own cult of violence, and become incoherent as a storyteller. Coherence wasn't helped by MGM's cutting at least a quarter-of-an-hour out of the finished film and removing a bitter, retrospective prelude. Subsequent releases have restored a lot of material, and now there's more widespread appreciation of the depth and power of Peckinpah's achievement. The cast, teeming with fine character actors, is extraordinary, making the gallery of frontier denizens vivid and resonant. --Richard T. Jameson

Jameson

Ride the High Country is the one Sam Peckinpah movie about which there has never been controversy--save at MGM in 1962, when a new studio regime opted to dump this beautiful, heartbreakingly elegiac Western into the bottom half of a double-bill. Westerns rarely even got reviewed back then, so it's wellnigh miraculous that critics discovered the movie and raved about it. Newsweek called it the best American picture of the year. Veteran cowboy stars Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea portray aging gunslingers in the twilight of the Old West. The slow-building tension between longtime friends--one still true to the code he's lived by, the other having drifted away from it--anticipates the tortuous personal dilemmas played out to the death by Peckinpah's Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Benny and Elita in Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. The action scenes are powerful, if only beginning to suggest the radical technique with which Peckinpah would astonish audiences in just a few years. But his feeling for flavorsome dialogue, Rabelaisian humor, and full-blooded character acting is already unmistakable. McCrea and Scott are simply superb. The two proposed that they swap roles before filming got underway, and the question of who got first billing was settled by flipping a coin. Both men retired once the film was in the can. They knew they'd never top it. --Richard T. Jameson

Why do bad things happen to good cucumbers? The Ballad of Little Joe takes an Old Testament look at the question of suffering and injustice via this cowboy-inflected VeggieTales take on the story of Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. Typically, the VeggieTales version of the familiar tale is sweetened and abridged to a fault--why do VeggieTales creators insist that young children confront complex Bible passages until they're actually ready for them?. But in Joseph's case the issue of forgiveness is certainly accessible to little ones, even if the larger idea of accepting one's destiny as "God's plan" gets muddled in Little Joe's salad-bar nonsense. Featuring familiar VeggieTales characters Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, and a baffling song interlude by Boyz in the Sink called "Belly Button." --Tom Keogh
