Yes - Symphonic Live

Starring:Yes, Jon Anderson, Steve Howe
Studio: Eagle Vision USA
Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:

Yes never needed a symphony to prove their sonic prowess. Even without keyboardist Rick Wakeman (replaced here by the skillful Tom Brislin), the veteran members (vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, and guitarist Steve Howe) are masters of their prog-rock domain. And yet the addition of the young, photogenic European Festival Orchestra (for this Amsterdam performance in November 2001) offers a glorious expansion of the Yes sound, enhanced and fully integrated to create the Yes equivalent of Phil Spector's famous wall of sound. Three songs are included from 2001's Magnification, but it's the classics--including a spectacular, epic rendition of Relayer's "Gates of Delirium"--that make this the best of several Yes DVDs on the market. A behind-the-scenes documentary is perfunctory, and the video of "Don't Go" (from Magnification) seems redundant, but the option to view alternate visuals is welcome, and the excellent DTS mix is best enjoyed loud. --Jeff Shannon

Wow!.......2007-02-28
This and the 35th Anniversary Tsongas dvds are must haves for the Yes fans out there. I can't say which I like better. It is fun watching the orchestra really getting into it. The music is as close to perfection as it could be. Get this and the 35th anniversary dvd. You won't regret it if you are a Yes fan. Of course on this one, I missed Rick Wakeman, but the other keyboardist did a superb job of filling in.
Yes, They are the Best!.......2007-02-02
I really enjoyed this DVD. Yes is my favorite band of all time. I saw this concert in August 2001, and again in 2002, with all my old geezer buddies. The concerts were great, 2001 being the better of the two. This DVD shows much of that. Seeing "Gates...", Close to the Edge, Ritual, and others like this was such a thing of beauty and wonder. We'd seen them in the round in 1979 and in the '80's. This concert and DVD is just as good as their 1979 show! They can still play it!

This is the "YES DVD".......2006-12-02
I have purchased each YES DVD currently available. Having grown up with YES in the 70's at their peak, the initial DVD's were a disappointment. However, I came to learn it was not the band, it was mostly my expectations to see 1970's YES on DVD. We all grow older. Coming to realize this, I updated most of my reviews.
However, this DVD is something VERY special. Not only is it the only one that has "Close to the Edge" from the album of the same name, but it contains a
large bundle of their most "known songs by folks that are not even YES fans".
If you grew up in the 70's, you WILL know these songs. For even the Mild YES fan, if you were thinking of buying ONE DVD, this is it.
They have a young Orchestra to back them up, and even they are in to the
music. Steve is at the best I have seen him in years! He even smiles a few times. Jon is just having a great time doing this concert. The bulk of the audience is indeed Late baby-boomers (going from 1942 to 1963 officially, I was born near the end of the boom. You can also tell from Grey and male pattern baldness kicking in :). The audience is having a great time. You can just feel the energy, and I wish to God I was there at that show. The video quality is excellent. No extra video effects, constant switching every 3 seconds (God, do I hate that. Producers just don't get that we want to experience as close to "being there" as possible.). This is indeed produced just like that. I love this DVD, and because we don't know how long they will last, or the DOg could eat it, or Kids get at it, I purchased 2 as I did with Pink Floyds Pulse. Now that is another disk that is just totally Awesome. If you have seen it and agree, this YES disk is the "Pulse" of YES. (O.K. minus the lighting show,
but Pink Floyd was always infamous for their lighting design.).
My reviews sometimes draw criticism as being too harsh. Perhaps.
But that says something about when I make a strong buy recommendation.
If it isn't right, I don't like to buy it. IMHO, everything needs to be
right. The band, the songs, the production video and audio. Yes is class,
and always has been.
Mind Blowing!.......2006-11-26
I actually attended this concert, I knew yes from years ago already and I dad told me I should really go and see them live. The first song was Close to the edge, I jumped from my chair and start screaming and then I noticed that I was the only one that knew which song it was. It was a lifetime experience seeing this fantastic band sharing their chemistry reaction together on stage.
Timeless!.......2006-05-31
Get this DVD, find three hours of spare time (some good wine may also come handy), and enjoy the Yes magic: you will be amazed at the quality of this show!
At last the magic and power of Yes performance was caught on DVD with proper quality both of video and audio - the picture and sound are both great, DTS surround track is incredible.
I am not going to give you the details - you will see it yourself, here is just my impression of this magnificent show.
The band is at its best - the musicians are enjoying the show, and the orchestra gives the band as good as it gets, really having a good time on stage. The interaction of the band and the orchestra is a creative one; they complement each other giving Yes music another dimension: just check the brilliant performance of my all-time Yes favorites "The Gates of Delirium" and "Close to the Edge"!
Standing ovation of the audience is its way of sincere appreciation of timeless music and unforgettable evening.
This DVD is an exemplary case when everything's in proper place: excellent performance of the band/orchestra and exceptional quality of DVD itself. This is definitely the best Yes DVD so far.
This DVD is a must - you will enjoy the show over and over again!

Disappointing..........2004-10-25
I own this Brazilian verion of 9012.
Well, all the contents are just the same as on previous release of VHS or LD, but the quality, both in video and in sound, is not even close. It looks/sounds like poorly duplicated bootleg.
Now, I just hope the official release of the same thing in US or UK, where any of YES member could check it before release.
A different stage of the greatest progr. rock band ever.......2004-09-18
Although the actual touring Yes is the original lineup, this band showed it's more commercial stage when 90125's "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" took the mainstream by storm. One of the best selling albums of Yes . I consider this band to be the greatest band to ever play in this planet -in every stage and every way possible. Nevertheless the influence of younger guitarrist/composer/singer Trevor Rabin was one of the most powerful assets they had in mid-80's. This concert reflects it at it's fullest. It's "90125" album plus -for example... did you ever imagined how the "rock'n rollest" version of "I've Seen All Good People" could sound? Well here you have it. I love Steve Howe's playing, but Trevor Rabin has a more contemporary approach and sound which results in a very interesting musical combination with the rest of the well known and respected lineup. They edited it with some very interesting visual effects -if it's the same as "9012-live", the VHS.
In spite of a little playback on some songs, it's the best recording and edition of a Yes concert I've ever seen.
I've played my old VHS on "9012Live" so many times -the tape has become transparent.
It's very dissapointing to find the DVD it's listed but not available.... please, Amazon.com people... don't just stand there...do something please!!
