Watching Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) is like stepping into a delightful alternate universe where wit and ingenuity are valued over sexual display and bombast. This energetic documentary explores the quirky world of They Might Be Giants, surely one of the most distinctive rock bands of all time. Through interviews with the band's creative duo, John Flansburgh and John Linnell, as well as concert clips, video snippets, and interviews with commentators and musicians like Ira Glass, Sarah Vowell, Frank Black, Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart, and the gloriously deranged Syd Straw, Gigantic tracks the irresistible rise of They Might Be Giants to the curious cult niche they occupy with panache and aplomb. The movie ably captures the band's off-kilter humor while also appreciating their poetry and musicianship. In addition, there's enough bonus material (full videos, live footage, deleted scenes and interviews) to make any fan's head explode. --Bret Fetzer

Embracing the Do-It-Yourself ethos of true independent artists, they have followed a unique and sometimes unconventional path to cult stardom - from their first meeting in grade school to their 2002 Grammy Award - aided by stunning low-budget music videos, trailblazing use of the internet and a telephone answering machine. Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) is a chronicle of the band's 20-year history, told through performances, animation, videos and hilarious commentaries from friends and fans.

We get it -- they are nice guys who are good friends!.......2006-07-20
...you know, I got nothing against They Might Be Giants. I like some of their records, and they seem like nice guys who have found a unique niche and have weathered some tough times in a cruel and thankless industry. Their work is rooted in deep friendship and hard work. Very admirable. However, does that make for a good film? Not at all...their story has no genuine drama, no tension, no excitement. It's not that they're a bad band -- this is just a bad subject for a film.
This doc is pretty mediocre in almost every way: construction, execution, etc. Lots of talking heads, though aside from the wonderous Syd Straw, no one really distinguishes themselves as particularly charismatic. In fact, it just seems like they are lined up to kiss TMBG's co-rump. Sarah Vowell is particularly grating, steering the audience through a sea of incredibly obvious observations with a smug sense of self satisfaction, like she was Sir Francis Drake or something. I'm a nerd, and even I felt like giving her a swirly after hearing her talk for 30 seconds. Good thing I don't listen to the radio, because I hear she's on it from time to time.
Another thing that irks me about this picture is how everyone talks about their innovative early live shows and how they used tapes and props, and then the filmmakers' cut to a very conventional, dull contemporary show. Not that the current touring lineup of TMBG is bad...it's just that it's incongruous and shortsells some of the band's most artistically productive achievements.
Also, the device where comedians (Andy Richter, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, etc) read TMBG lyrics just comes off as smarmy. The small-town quaintness segments (the Polk history lesson, the debate team, etc) are a good idea but inserted jarringly and with the carelessness of a film school freshman.
Another thing that's odd...most of the "we're doing the rock band thing around New York City" footage happens between September 7 and September 10th, 2001. I know, because the filmmakers put dates on it. I'm no prophet of doom, but don't you think it would have been better to leave the dates off? All I could think in my mind was "Our world is about to change irreversabley in 7 hours, but here we are at a TMBG in-store in Manhattan." Scarey. Could have easily been avoided.
That said, there are nice extras on the DVD, particularly the amazing Tonight Show performance (I'd like to see Brandford, Eubanks, and Co. pull that off today!) and Adam Bernstein's great early videos.
Nice guys shouldn't finish last, and they don't always. But that doesn't make the race interesting to watch.
For Giants Fans, this Comes Up Short.......2006-06-02
I have a few big caveats I need to give at the outset of this review. I came into this film with a lot of baggage. First, They Might Be Giants is one of my favorite bands (see CdC #9 & 10) and I've been dying to see this movie since I heard that it was being made. That said, it took an embarrassing amount of begging and pleading to get a screener copy. I contacted the producer, Shirley Moyers, on countless occasions, asking for a copy as it didn't come close to my hometown. Yet, for some odd reason, I was told that screeners would only be provided to journalists in towns where the film was playing. The logic of this escaped me.
Couple this with my knowledge that the filmmakers were offered a bevy of film footage starring the nascent Giants which they didn't accept and that could have finally uncovered the story behind Dave Kendall's claims that They Might Be Giants were roadies for The Replacements. The reluctance to have their film reviewed by a beseeching journalist and the brush-off of potential contributors (despite posting a desire for stories, pictures, et cetera) lead me to believe that A.J. Schnack's GIGANTIC: A TALE OF TWO JOHNS would be a suboptimal work.
Between the interviews and fleeting bits of archival footage is a kickass concert film. I think I'd rather that GIGANTIC was a full concert rather than putting up with the inane celebrity endorsements (Harry Shearer, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Richter, Michael McKean, et cetera) and the horribly awful voice of interviewee Sarah Vowell of NPR's "This American Life." After about a half hour of GIGANTIC I realized that I'd have gleaned more information about TMBG, from re-reading the liner notes of Miscellaneous T than from Schnack's documentary.
I tried to come in to GIGANTIC with an open mind. I also tried to look at the movie as both a fan and someone who might not have ever heard of They Might Be Giants before. As a fan, it was mighty fun watching TMBG going through their creative process. They're one of the most prolific and inventive groups I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. As a newbie, I didn't really have much of a reason to buy in to these two dweebs and their silly little songs. I would have liked to have gotten more of their impact and history much earlier in the film. Tell me the appeal of these guys rather than making me dig it out from amongst the interviews. And I could have done without the five minutes of stories about coffeemakers.
In short, GIGANTIC: A TALE OF TWO JOHNS wasn't worth the frustration or the wait. If you're a fan or coming to the band fresh stick to their music videos and albums.
Opposites Interact.......2005-04-11
When my nephew Tim did me the great favor of hooking me up with these two guys, I wondered what planet they came from. This and the other DVD make it obvious: Brooklyn.
What will you learn from this disc:
1. Creative people are obsessive. The output pours from one of our Johns like it did from Mozart. He almost cannot help it. There are simply people who exude creativity, and they cannot stop themselves.
2. The talents diverge and complement. You have a John who schmoozes and a John who stays back and creates. You have a tough John and a gentle John. You have a John with glasses and a John without glasses.
3. I've never heard anybody play around with musical form and poetry like these guys can.
A carp: why so little about Apollo 18?? That was one of their best, but it's shorted in the film.
Not to put too fine a point on it..........2005-01-20
This is a pretty good documentary about the two man band They Might Be Giants. I would by no means call it the "definitive" look at the group, but it is still interesting. It is sure to be of interest to fans of the band, but I am not really sure how non-fans will react to it. There are also plenty of bonus features, which will give TMBG fans hours of entertainment. All in all, this is a well put together DVD.
Hammer down, rabbit ears!.......2004-06-19
John Flansburgh and John Linnell burst onto the music scene in the mid-'80s as a two-man band with a name cribbed from an old George C. Scott movie: "They Might Be Giants."
Armed with accordions, clarinets, wicked guitars, tape loops, drum machines and voices like Big Bird, They Might Be Giants created their own hilariously geeky genre of music. They had catchy hooks to spare and a knack for existential, caffeinated Fisher-Price tongue-twisters and wordplay.
Much like Brian Wilson once created what he called "pocket symphonies," the Giants made "pocket pop songs."
"Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns" - doesn't give a clear,
chronological history of the band but does offer a refreshing look at two gifted musicians who usually hide behind their wall of sound and mirth.
Through clips of their live shows, videos and cogent interviews (with Flansburgh and Linnell, manager Jamie Kitman, former Pixie's frontman Frank Black, authors Dave Eggers and Sarah Vowell and others), the movie covers some of the Giants' best-known songs and the touchstones of their brief history: their formation and "do-it-yourself" early days; their Dial-A-Song service (basically an answering machine at Flansburgh's old apartment that offered a new song each day for free); the problems they encountered with their label during the grunge era; and their recent resurgence via the Internet.
As with anything of this sort, "Gigantic" isn't for nonfans (even for a moderate fan, the uniqueness of the Giants' music makes a little go a long way), but the group's countless devotees will be extremely pleased with the DVD and its giant's portion of extras.
This is how all music DVDs should be stocked: eight music videos; tons of deleted scenes and interviews; an audio presentation of their "This American Life" profile and the group's old TV appearances on "Joy Farm" and "Nick Rocks."

Pretty good, but..........2004-05-14
The 2001 is better in My Opinion, 2001 has better/more skateparks/screwing around, although there are more skaters in this one, not as much skating. A must have to complete the series though, this was the last one they made :(

Outdoes the other two.......2003-09-02
Just as good if not better than the first two. They go wakeskating, paintballing again, New Orleans(no nudity,DARN), Whitewater rafting,to a spa and more.
Awesome, OUTDOES THE FIRST TWO!!!!.......2003-08-27
Even more excitement than the first 2. 2 flaws, they don't go to woodward and no Mat Hoffman, but other than that very cool.
Tony Hawkýs Gigantic Skatepark Tour 2002........2003-08-22
What a great collection of shows and extras! This series aired on ESPN in the latter half of 2002 and if you missed it, now is your chance to get it. Some of the highlights that stand out in my mind include Kerry Getz, Eric Koston, and Willy Santos getting SUPER tech all over the place; Mike V. destroying himself to pull off the gnarly stuff; Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, and Shaun White just killin' it on vert. Basically, everyone on this tour rocks. Too many riders, tricks, locations, and situations to exhaustively list right here, so buy the DVD and check it all out for yourself!
Some of the more interesting extras that were never aired include Tony getting kidnapped by the B-team; Getz and Chalmers tearing up the real streets of St. Paul, MN; Kris Markovich and Sal Masekela getting ready to throw some blows after someone put something in someone's drink; and Bam's gruesome trip to the dentist (hey can I have that tooth?).
The current DVD format has more options compared to the 2000 and 2001 discs. You can now play all shows consecutively instead of just one at a time. You can also pick individual shows and navigate to specific tour stops therein. It is interesting that some of the original music in certain segments has been changed. I've always felt that skateboarding and video making are works of art and this kinda sets a different tone/mood when watching parts that I am thoroughly familiar with. Also, the "Best Of" segments, where the boyz are reminiscing about the tour, are not included. Anyhow, if you have the series taped as aired (and are cultish on anything and everything Hawk), you might want to hold on to those cassettes even after getting this DVD.
Sadly, this is probably the last of the "Gigantic Skatepark Tour" series, however, I do believe that the 2003 "Secret Skatepark Tour" will be coming to DVD soon. Check out Tony's website for details.
Tony Hawk's Gigantic Skatepark Tour 2002.......2003-08-13
If you have seen the previous two then this is a must,..even if you haven't this is great! Tons of killer skate footage and behind the scenes stuff. All the best are back and then some. Mike V., Bam, Bob, Riley, Sal, Rob, Mirra, Rooftop, Shaun White and so many others. Hell they end up with two buses full of pro's. There is so much footage that is take a few times of seeing it to get it all in. The bonus footage is great as well-(poor Shaun White gets a huge payback). Outstanding DVD!

Product Description
Containing music from Radiohead's 'Hail to the Thief' as well as tracks unreleased before, set to a collection of perhaps the strangest videos you've seen on your teevee, and introduced by the one-and-only, the incorrigible, the indefatigable, the certifiable Chieftan Mews... It is, without doubt, The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of all Time. Or, in the words of THOM YORKE: Twenty-four short films with music by Radiohead This was originally meant to be 4 episodes shown on our very own television channel. It was just before Hail to the Thief was released. Everyone was working themselves into a froth. They told us they could get us our own station. Somewhere here, somewhere there, you know. It was very exciting. We were going to take over the airwaves. So we set about puxing together some television. We got lots of tapes from a request we put on our website. Lots. Lots and lots. We also generated some television of our own to avoid going sir crazy in the studio. It was saved by the dedication of Dilly Gent who diligently went through all the tapes and Chris Bran who edited them together. The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of all Time -- Something about money, cutbacks, too weird, might scare the children, staV layoVs, shareholders.. you know.. fair enough. It was a shame considering there is a lot of people's hard work here. It sort of got forgoxen about. Until now. So we apologize to everybody who sent us their work..... SORRY IT'S LATE. But now you can watch it when you want, and maybe actually see it properly as well. It contains music from Hail to the chief etc., and all sorts of other suff from us... videos you may not have seen, and unreleased music that isn't out anywhere else. A Thom Yorke, 2nd September 2004.
Customer Reviews:
This was awful..........2006-08-05
I was expecting this DVD to be more on the lines of "7 Radiohead Television Commercials" but the videos were badly transferred and pixelated. But worst of all, most of the music on this DVD are clips--not even the full songs, so you start to get into it and then its over. After each clip, they put a commercial in there for Radiohead TV...they are just awful...The only reason I didnt give this 1 star is because there are a few complete songs on there, but not enough (like 3 though I can't remember the exact #). It's not worth $30+ for 3 songs...
Not what was expected.......2006-01-28
The thought of Radiohead being given the opportunity to make a t.v. show is pretty open ended. None the less, this dvd did take me by surprise. I thought it was great, but i didnt like how videos only used parts of songs. The bonus stuff is great, and the recording process footage is very interesting. But its hard to watch a movie to a song that you know, but have the movie only use part of the song. But it was definately worth the money, and the wait to get here. Any radiohead fan could not complain.
we suck young blood.......2005-04-29
typical radiohead craziness with really cool animation and film shorts that make the viewer feel like they are on drugs, this is not a radiohead live show nor a documentary but rather a collection of segments that were originally on radiohead tv. there is very few band shots except weird interviews and disorted images of radiohead playing. my favorite is the homeland hoedown part, it's genius. if you enjoy things that make you think and like radiohead then you will enjoy the most gigantic lying mouth of all time, if not watch out for pop idol and get your request into trl.
I'm sick of these s**t releases on DVD.......2005-03-19
I JUST WANT A LIVE DVD !!!!
Radiohead is fantastic, extraordinary, different, dark, intense, addictive, magic, confusing, avant garde, experimental, etc. Nothing of that is reflected with these stupid DVD's they have released. This king of DVD just contain lame boring stuff for filling the running Time and to be put on sale.
I do not understand why they do not make an awesome live DVD instead of this kind of s**t. Radiohead is brilliant, but sometimes they are too obstinate and they do not understand - or they do not want to understand - that fans we are not interested in these useless DVD's for TV filled with pointless video commercials and all that bulls**t.
Live Gigs always have been the best thing of Radiohead. There're dozens of complete live performances shared as Pro-Shot DVD bootlegs out there !!!!, but I want an official release !!!.
PLEASE RADIOHEAD
Who Shopped Who?.......2005-02-07
Two words... Freak Juice! Oh, and "free petrol" as well! This DVD is a collection of brilliant work - the videos are extraordinary expressions of the music of Radiohead. It's not a documentary along the lines of "Meeting People is Easy", it's more like "7 Television Commercials" in that it is videos put to Radiohead's work, or video of them performing, and a few funny interviews with band members. There are four "episodes" with introductions by "Chieftan Mews". Episodes 1 - 3 were originally available on the radiohead.tv web site (no longer there), while Episode 4 is an addition for this DVD release.
I love everything on this disc, but some of the highlights and my very favorites include: the two pieces directed by Juan Pablo Etcheverry -"De Tripas Y Corazon" (Where I End And You Begin) [Ep. 2] & "Dog Interface" (Fast Track) [Ep. 4]; "The Cat Girl" (2 + 2 = 5) [Ep. 1]; "The Scream" (No Surprises) [Ep. 2]; "Chickenbomb" [Ep. 4]; and you gotta love the satire of "The Homeland Hoedown" [Ep. 4]!
The crowning achievement, however, has got to be Johnny Hardstaff's Push Pulk / Spinning Plates video [Ep. 3]. In my opinion, it captures the essence of these songs - and it has to be the most disturbing thing you'll see in quite a while.
As a Radiohead fan, it's great to see & hear some of the unreleased & non-album (b-sides etc.) material too. If only they had included that catchy music that used to play online between radiohead.tv episodes (even catchier than "The most Gigantic Theme")... ah well.
Yes, this material might be considered "avant garde" or "weird".... However, it should really get you thinking, and how often do videos and music get you doing that nowadays?

Product description says : "Don't be fooled. This is the Best Big Boob Solo Girl Series in the world! They strip and masturbate...just for you! Others may copy, but none compare to Gigantic Joggies!". You can read this description on the back of the box. It is very rare for the product description to be exact with what you are about to see but in this case, it sure is ! Beautiful gorgeous ladies strip and mqsturbate with all possible ways. there is everything in there. Clear pussy views, nice action leaving NOTHING to the imagination. And absolytely NO censors, no blurred details no cut scenes when starting to become interesting and nothing hidden with camera tricks or with the models posing in a way that they hide their "activities", as many other so called "unsensored" productions do. Rest assured this is truly unsencrored and uncut. Many Bravos to this Director, Producer and Studio (not to forget the girls offering their treasures so plentyfully of course) for this feature. All you other producers that state your products as uncensored and uncut, take a look at this one. This is what "unsensored" and "uncut" really means. This is how truly uncensored and uncut features should be made. All of you, big boob lovers and female masturbation fans, DO NOT hesitate not even a moment! Get this! I,personally will try other productions from this studio, hoping that they will be equally hot too. And if they are, I will get them all... 5 stars are really few for this DVD. It devinitely deserves 10 stars! Because there is also true talking and genuine pleasure sounds and moans from the girls as they are driving themselves to extasy, instead of only some stupid background music being heard, along the way, as is many times the case with other productions. Excellent from all aspects. Add the top picture quality there is in this feature and be certain that this will make your juices boil...
If it doesn't, seek medical help...

Hours of Entertainment.......2003-01-30
This video is outstanding. Jason Ellis is laugh out loud funny every time the camera is on him. Of course Tony Hawk's skating is amazing. A good view of life from the road, and a snapshot of how skateboarding's popularity has soared. The rest of the skaters / bmxers also get some good footage, and the 'off days' adventures when the crew is not skating are pretty entertaining as well.
Somewhat dissapointing.......2002-09-20
Well if you're trying to choose between the 2001 and the 2000 tour, get the 2001 tour. After watching the 2001 tour, this DVD was a little dissapointing. The lineup of skaters is just as good, but they just don't do as much. The only people who get much air time are Tony Hawk and Jason Ellis and the bikers. Which would be cool, but when you've got people like Andrew Reynolds and Brian Sumner listed on the video, but they have about 3 minutes combined air time on a 6 hour DVD its kinda sad. And the complete lack of Mike Vallely and the very sparse footage of Bam Margera means everything is pretty much tech, rather than burly, and the tech isn't that impressive.
Having said that, the skating isn't too bad. They got stuck with a bunch of rather undesirable parks to skate, so there's nothing that's especially progressive on here. And the extra cirricular activities aren't that much fun to watch either. If you're a fan of the series, its kinda cool to have, and I'm glad I bought it, but it really isn't that great of a skateboarding video. Get the 2001 tour.

So Funny!.......2004-10-19
I recomend this DVD to anybody. Even if you don't like skateboarding. There is so many things happining at once. I think this is one of my favorite DVD's.
Can anything gigantic really be bad?.......2002-09-16
Wow. What a tour. The skating in this video is just sick. There's nothing so mind blowing that you'll never see something similar elsewhere, but there is definitely some progressive, creative, and overall ridiculous skating.
The lineup of skaters is awesome, with Mike Vallely, Bam Margera, Eric Koston, and of course, Tony Hawk, along with a mess of other pros and ams. You don't really get to see them at their best because of it being a demo atmosphere, where you don't get 6 months to test stuff out and film until you get it right, but there's still tons of worthwhile stuff in there.
If you just like human interest shows you'll enjoy it too. You get to see the stress touring causes both mentally and physically, as well as what they do on their days off (paintball, bowling, skating empty pools, ATV racing).
With 2 dvd's, its about 6 hours of film, and I watched it straight through without getting bored once. Its really a worthwhile purchase if you're a fan of skateboarding.

Mind Blowing.......2006-02-03
An absolutely amazing DVD! The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time tops my list of Radiohead DVDs. The time and effort taken to put this masterpiece together has really paid off. The music is great and the visual effects are awesome! A definitely worthwhile purchase for every Radiohead fan.
Don't pay more than $20!.......2006-01-26
Go to Radiohead.tv or through Radiohead.com and order this DVD brand new for $20. Why are people trying to sell it for more? Because they want to rip you off.
That goes for anything you buy on Amazon.com. Research it and make sure it's really the best price, and don't forget to "view shipping rates" before putting stuff in your cart. Some items that cost above 50 cents more for overall price might acttually be $1 or more cheaper for shipping, which means the overall cost is actually less. That means although the price is slightly more, because shipping is alot cheaper you end up paying less.
