The only Grateful Dead video to have received a theatrical release (in the mid-'70s), this film is a real time capsule. See Keith and Donna Godcheaux as integral parts of the band! See the Wall of Sound! See the trippy animation! See Jerry with all-black hair! The photography and sound are crude and not on par with those in some of the more recent Dead videos, notably Ticket to New Year's or Downhill from Here, but its earnestness, and its focus on an era in the Band's history with little other video documentation, more than make up for the lack of polish. There's some above-average music, too, especially "Eyes of the World" and the ever-irresistible "U.S. Blues." --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars This is IT!.......2006-09-21

This is IT! Really, Really, REALLY! THIS IS IT! The only way to really be there again these days. Not just a time capsule---it's a time machine.

5 out of 5 stars This you have to see!.......2006-07-01

Jerry wasn't always old and, well, bulky. And he wasn't always gray. But he was always brilliant. I hadn't seen this film for well over twenty years until it recently gave me the best flashbacks of youth I've ever experienced. And I was only on the fringes of the whole Deadhead scene. Highly recommended. Rob W.

5 out of 5 stars grateful for the superb audio quality on this one.......2006-06-20

If you want a great look into the early-mid seventies era of the Dead, you Neeeeed this dvd. The sound is great. The footage is classic and awesomely typical of the times. Many consider this period of the dead as somewhat of a pinacle. Their playing was tight and had sincere feeling behind it. The Wake of the Flood ('73) and Mars Hotel ('74) albums were somewhat of a change in their sound, but a good one i'd say. And, as always, their set stretched back years, to their first albums, and always included great extended jams.

This DVD set is all that you hoped it would be. The theatrical relase (disc 1) is an 'enlightening' view into the scene surrounding the dead, with great performances intertwined. The bonus material (disc 2) contains over and hour and a half of awesome footage of ONLY songs. And while you can see in some places why this footage was left out (guitars slightly out of tune, and other flubs) it pretty much made the movie for me. There are very minimal crowd shots and all the great solos are closely documented.

You won't even need any outside 'influences' to feel happy watching this one.

As it was said earlier, "Get if for Disc 2", if nothing else.

4 out of 5 stars Wow flashback.......2006-03-08

To me this was when the dead were in there prime at winterland san francisco. This was bill grahams favorite band. The shows were filmed just before the band took a two year break.I have fond memories of hanging out at winterland and expanding my mind Thank you bill

5 out of 5 stars US Blues.......2005-12-09

There are a couple of good reviews on Amazon about this DVD already, so I'm going to try to keep this short. First off, this is a great DVD (both of them). The footage is terrific- showing many aspects of a Dead concert.
But this DVD is more than just conert footage. By the end the viewer can almost feel the temperature of the place, the work and hours that went into building the stage, long hours on the road, and the flat out soul the Dead brought to the fans... and vice versa.
I would suggest watching this DVD, the reading Mr. Lesh's book and then watching this again.

Description

With music by The Charlatans, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Lynne Hughes, Mark Unobsky, Dan Hicks, Alice Stuart, Ph Phactor Jug Band, Final Solution, Wildflower, Boston Wranglers, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service

Directed By: Mary Works

Their names and music became legendary: Big Brother & the Holding Company, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and the house band - The Charlatans. If the psychedelic sixties were born in the dancehalls of San Francisco, then they were conceived in a saloon in Virginia City, Nevada where the musicians carried Winchesters & the kitchen served French gourmet meals.

The psychedelic era fostered cultural growth and artistic expression. The Red Dog Saloon was the incubator for the lightshow and psychedelic poster art, an entire lifestyle that truly defined a remarkable era and defied classification as it weaved it's tapestry of free love and music, which the Grateful Dead would spread around the world.

Filmmaker Mary Works (assistant editor "Titanic", "Saving Private Ryan") was entrusted with access to the lives, antics and attics of this unique extended rock and roll family that grew out of these wild times.

DVD Features - A conversation with the filmmakers, Where are they now?, Jim Marshall Photo Gallery and Interview

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Historical.......2007-02-05

This DVD says it all--the history, the music of the era, the culture of the 60s San Franciso-Virginia City, NV scene that helped to create it..amazing Charlatans.

5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Horse's -- er -- Dog's Mouth.......2007-01-30

I gave this DVD every star available. It is solidly produced and presents a robust explication of a Movement which is taken for granted now, but was, lest we forget, ephemeral and wildly improbable in the extreme. Yet it happened. Chaos theory spins a tale of the "butterfly effect" which can eventually power a hurricane on the other side of the Earth. How did the long hair of the Hippie's actually come about? Were Hippies "slobs", "bums", "idiots"? No, they were perfectionists, actually, as any Grateful Dead roadie could endlessly testify. The accessability of the story is perhaps too clear and immediate for viewers to credit on first viewing. This film will get under your skin. It is neglected, discounted anthropology. It is important.

5 out of 5 stars The only footage of the Charlatans are on this DVD.......2007-01-21

I have to agree with some aspects of the negative reviews found here: Yes, if you're looking for stories revolving around the popular bands of the area, don't buy it. Actually, only buy this, if you heard or read of the Red Dog Saloon before. Because then it's safe to assume that you are really familiar with the development of the music scene in San Francisco in the 60s. Because then you don't have to rely on this DVD to learn who the Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane were.

If the Red Dog Saloon does ring a bell, buy this DVD. Buy it, because it contains the only known footage of the Charlatans, the real pioneers. True: If you listen to their sound you would never guess that they were the spearhead of the music scene back in 64 and 65. But that's not the point. This DVD basically explains why the Charlatans worked as a band, as an image and as a visual focus point that drew people because it was way cool.

Also to be seen on DVD: Excerpts of the Red Dog Reunion concert back in the early 90s with the Charlatans and Big Brother And The Holding Company. Lynne Hughes is there, too. The background of the Light Machine is explained. Interviews with people from the scene less famous than the typical names associated with it. Oh yes, and music. Music that is virtually forgotten by most of us today but still belongs and is easily identified as part of the dawn of psychedelic rock.

The bottom line: Great if not fantastic DVD for people interested in the background of the music scene. It concentrates on the Red Dog and leaves therefore little room for the more famous bands of the area. But that was not the intention. The DVD is a joy to watch. It is great to listen to the interviews. I will treasure this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Music Backstory .......2006-04-16

I consider this an essential documentary of the sixties music scene. It's a story that might well be lost without this film.

If you're expecting a Grateful Dead video, like all the other videos from this company, then don't bother buying this one.

I'm really quite shocked by the one star reviews of this fascinating video. I guess either you get it or you don't.

Rockin' at the Red Dog isn't boring - it's hip, man, you dig?

3 out of 5 stars What happened to the Thirteenth.......2006-03-16

Floor Elevators? I know it is always debateable as to who coined the term psychedelic and who was the first "psychedelic" band. I don't know for sure. History is fickle at best in this area, but I do think that in any psychedelic movie the Elevators should certainly at least be mentioned, as well as some other bands of the era...but it is always the Grateful Dead, Big Brother, Quicksilver, and the San Francisco bands that are mentioned. Don't get me wrong. They belong there and I still enjoy their music--especially Quicksilver's--but where are Roky Erikson and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators?

Music by Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia, appearances by Babatunde Olatunji, Merl Saunders, Wavy Gravy, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann

Written & Directed By: Brent Meeske For 30 years, Jerry Garcia played guitar and sang for the Grateful Dead, and by doing so, inspired a modern cultural phenomenon - the legions of nomadic fans that made a communal way of life out of following Jerry and the Dead - the Deadheads. "The End of the Road" began shooting just 3 months before Garcia's Death in 1995 - documenting `life on the road' with this family of bohemian wanderers - on what would be the final tour with Jerry and the Dead. That summer the road came to an end back where it all began - in San Francisco - where thousands gathered one last time for eulogies from bandmates, friends and family at the memorial for Jerry Garcia.

DVD Features: Uncut Memorial Ceremony, Extended Merl Saunders Interview, Follow-up Interviews, Deleted/Extended Scenes, Original Press Kit

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-06-24

I just watched this with a friend and it's just sad. Just before Brent died things were getting bad on tour. And after Brent died, there is not one Dead show that it worth viewing or listening too. I would have thought they would have put out something better than this as their next release after the Buffalo shows which were pretty good. They have SO many hours and hours of Great footage and music. Why they chose this is beyond me. If you are a true die hard Dead Head, don't bother buying this one. All around... just bad. I would encourage you to write to them and ask for better stuff. Great footage is around from late 70's to early 90's. Let's get it out there!

1 out of 5 stars If you absolutely have to 'relive' the 1995 lot scene, or wonder what it looked like..........2006-01-09

This video may be worth renting, once. I saw shows on the 1995 summer tour, and it was just sad. Their were very few positive things happening, and SO MANY bad things happening. If you REALLY need to see that, watch this video. (If you're looking for Band Shots/Concert Footage - don't bother.) Don't expect much in the way of cinematography. This is NOT a high-quality Montery Video release. This is someone who had alot of parking lot video cam footage cashing in on it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-09-12

I thought this was going to be more of a "chat with the band *AND* fans" kinda thing, but it's mostly just film of the parking lot parties before the Dead shows. I came to the Dead late (about 2002) as a fan, so maybe I just don't get it (and I'm completely anti-drug). It could be that this film is just for those who actually were there and this is like a filmed class reunion.

5 out of 5 stars "Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right" - Robert Hunter.......2005-08-22

The summer tour that this film captures was filled with many problems. I saw shows during this tour and unfortunately, there were harmful elements that I witnessed that had encroached into the community that followed the Grateful Dead. I commend the filmmaker for showing an honest perspective without sanitizing the negatives. I appreciated that the film also avoided sensationalizing events such as when unruly fans crashed through the fence at Deer Creek Amphitheatre. This could have been easily exploited with a drawn out examination for dramatic effect but instead it lasted less than two minutes. In the next scene, the film presents a very inspiring sequence where older Deadheads take accountability for not properly educating the new generation of fans. The determination of those interviewed to confront the problems on tour was very uplifting. Tragically, their vision was never realized as life following the Grateful Dead ended with Jerry's untimely death. Without a doubt, the closing scenes of fans gathered to celebrate Jerry's life makes this film worth purchasing. I highly recommend this film not only for Deadheads but more importantly for younger fans who have adopted the nomadic lifestyle of following the next generation of bands. There are lessons in this film to be learned, gathered and passed on.

2 out of 5 stars like bad home movie footage.......2005-08-18

I was eagerly anticipating this one but was left sorely disappointed. I give it two stars, just because seeing the remaining band members give speeches at funeral/celebration was interesting. But really, the first hour of this documentary is pretty bad. It's shot with a cam corder, albeit a decent one, and it's essentially a series of interviews with heads in the parking lot. All the cliches are there... the tiedye shirtmaker, the people who haven't showered since god knows when... don't get me wrong, I'm a huge head myself, but this wasn't worth watching. The time period was 3 months before Jerry's death until his death. But there's no footage of the band playing. None. I guess that's what I wanted most, not home movies of parking lot interviews. Even a little concert footage would have gone a long way. Sorry, my two cents. I absolutely loved "Downhill from here" and "Truckin up to Buffalo", both DVDs from 1989 concerts.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, needs one thing.......2006-07-22

This is a nice tutorial and accurate! it does need a jam track of each song at the end of the lesson so that you can put it all together before jamin' with the dead. I hope that they are doing another!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very underrated (and unfairly so) by Amazon viewers.......2006-07-20

Apparently some people either didn't read the cover of this DVD or were confused by the phrase, "A step-by-step breakdown of the Grateful Dead's guitar styles and techniques." This is an excellent tape, but it is not a concert tape! It is a worthwhile instructional video that teaches you how to play the chords, intros, solos, etc, of these Grateful Dead classics: Casey Jones, Uncle John's Band, Friend of the Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Truckin', China Cat Sunflower, Shakedown Street, and Touch of Grey. There are split screen shots and everything can be figured out without using a tab (a good thing, because it doesn't come with one!). Grateful Dead songs - and especially these - tend to use straightforward chords (there are exceptions, though). All of these songs pretty much use major and minor chords.

So if you want to learn a bunch of Grateful Dead songs and learn the techniques employed by Bobby and Jerry, check this out! Like I told you, what I said, if you want a concert video, you better get back to Tennesse Jed!

5 out of 5 stars Great tutorial--authentic, concise and a lot of fun!.......2005-09-26

Not sure how the other reviewers were mislead but this was very clearly a guitar tutorial DVD taught by a great teacher. In just one day, i was playing Uncle John's Band and Casey Jones exactly how the Dead play them. Both Jerry and Bob guitar parts are broken down and clearly explained in both close-ups on the fretboard as well as a picture-in-picture of the right hand strumming. i wish all video tutorials were this good.

4 out of 5 stars It is by Hal Leonard - of course it is a guitar tab book.......2005-03-28

What were these other reviewers thinking? The product is by Hal Leonard, one of the foremost publishers of instrument teaching books ! Maybe the description could be written a bit better, but it was exactly what I was looking for and I am glad I found it.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This One !!.......2004-12-21

Unless your learning the guitar, and want to learn "The Dead" cords, this is not what your looking for. The band doesn't play on this DVD !!!

3 out of 5 stars If you wernt lucky enough 2 be there ,this is a sad substitute.......2006-04-30

trying to capture something as wonderful as the world created around the dead by there loving fans is no easy task and not in my opinion shown very well in this atempt yes every thing you see is reminisant of little corners of the dead world an enteresting look at world that no longer exsists and for those of you who unfortuantly wernt there just know while this gives a small glimpse just a mere scratch of the surface that those of us who were there sadly will recoginize and miss in this film . still an historical record none the less to be at least to be seen as such

4 out of 5 stars THEIR IS NOTHING LIKE A DEAD SHOW........2006-03-17

A Great film about the people who follow the Grearful Dead.
It not only shows that they are real but also shows the other side of what goes on in the parking lots of the Dead shows..
A must for all Dead fans , Vegas , Seattle, and Portland

5 out of 5 stars CAPTURES AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN ROCK HISTORY.......1999-11-02

The Greatful Dead have a place in rock history that sets them apart from all other acts. No group or individual artist has a following as deeply loyal as the Dead. This film reveals in a one-to-one documentary style, what a "Dead Head" is all about. One need not be a rock fan to enjoy it. If you're a fan of documentaries, that's enough.

5 out of 5 stars This film expressed the way music brings people together.......1999-02-03

I watched this video being a Grateful Dead fan and was so intrigued by the dedication of these fans. Everyone in the film had a common ground. These people lived in R.V's or other buses. They ate together, sang together, and explored music together. This film was beautiful. Even if you're not a Dead Head, this is an inspiring film to see.
