Although more than a decade old, I adore this concert. The music is fantastic. Seeing and hearing Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba is an extra.
Great music.

An emotional moment in history........2007-02-28

I loved this when first released, but now it has more power and impact. Occurring a few years before the freeing of Mandela, it captures the intensity of all the feelings associated with the struggle - the weariness, the longing and fierce determination at a time when no one knew what the outcomes might be. Having seen Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekla live many times over my life, I find this performance to exemplify why they are legends. This was a stunning colaboration and monumental to make happen. It's a gift this film exists.

This is an excellent DVD. The production is excellent and for musicians it has a lot of shots of the players as opposed to just the singer. The 'jam' factor is pretty high and you can see it in the intensity of the dancing going on in the crowd.

The only reason why i did not give 5 stars is because there were no 'extras'.

The DVD is definitely worth seeing on a large screen TV with progressive scan and with a good set of full range speakers. The 'sound' is vintage 'yamaha' and full and warm. The engineers knew what they were doing on this recording. The use of subtitles for the words of the song even fulfills a quasi-karaoke function and lets you sing along to the more famous songs like graceland, diamonds, call me al, etc.

I'm an African, and I've been listening to this music, and I've also been watching this concert on Video since 1991.
Having lived in the Western World for a while, Wow! I'm yet to see anything like this. If you are a true music lover,
no one needs to tell you about this music and concert. All you need to do is get a copy.

I've been to many music concerts including Jazzfests, but nothing..I mean nothing come close to this in term of performance. As an African this is one the best music concerts I've seen. Paul Simon did a beautiful job in mixing contemporay white folk's music with African beats. Who says there can't be harmony in the world. Watching Blacks and Whites dancing and pumping the fist in the air makes me believe we are getting there.

The international langugage of music- rythm, harmony, and beats knows no bound and this Paul's masterpiece work of art is what every human living should have - particularly blacks.

Paul Simon,Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo...all in one concert...Wow!

Believe me it all (everything) start from here - Africa- and that's where Paul came to put the final 'icing' on his tremendous career.

Returning To Graceland.......2007-06-15

To be honest with you, the 1980's brought out some of the most universal and influential records of all time. While we will always think of Michael Jackson's Thriller and Whitney Houston's 2 records that really shot up the charts, her 1987 Whitney album and her 1985 self-titled record, there were some of those who've felt at that time lost in the shuffle. Paul Simon was one of those acts. He was in a awkward place in his solo career and personal life with a divorce from Carrie Fisher and his reunion with Art arfunkel in the early 80's. He needed a sense of inspiration to his work, because he did feel the need of being commercial success anymore. His most successful work, lied within inspiration from discrimination and turned into Graceland.

Classic Albums: Paul Simon's Graceland is a delightful and remarkable retrospective behiind what made Paul Simon's 1986 album one of the most influential records of all time, and his most successful to date. The story shows how Paul Simon went all the way to South Africa, and how he earned the influences to what became a great album. The documentary includes highlights from him as well as others who worked behind the scenes, including highlights from his Graceland tour and appearances from Saturday Night Live. The filming also shows how tracks like You Can Call Me Al were made into great videos for the MTV era with Chevy Chase. The filming was great and showed a lighter side from a country that was heavily discriminated and abused because of Apartheid rule. There also are great moments here including tracks like Graceland, the upbeat The Boy In The Bubble, and many other wonderful comments.

All in all, Classic Albums has had many of its documentarires recently air on the VH1 Classic channel and reflect great music in our industry that we often really forget about and overlook. Paul Simon today is one of those acts who we still know and love, and I really recommend this if you're a die hard fan, or interested into new music. You might call him Al, but don't call him a throwback.

I really loved this dvd. There is some information for everybody, beginners as well as advanced. There is also a nice presence from Paul himself who does not hestitate to retrace the painful and private premices of this album. I was not necessarily a huge fan of his music and knew absolutely nothing of his personnal life and of his method in composing. This dvd, without being too personnal, made me discover the craftmanship of the composer and the depth of the man.
I also enjoyed the discovery of the South-African music, their traditions and influence as described by some of the musician of that country. The many footages of the countryside were a pleasure, which worked perfectly with "Graceland" songs.
The anecdotes are meaningful, witty, funny, deep, depending on the situation. None of them self-indulgent or egotistical. This DVD is a truly great journey with one of the most influential folk composer's. I would rank this DVD up there with "The Clash, West way to the world" and
"U2, the making of the Joshua tree".

This DVD shows the incredible talent and focus of Paul Simon as well as his great concern for those in unimaginal plight. Many believed his trip to Africa was inappropriate when he made the album but the film shows just the opposite. What an example of how powerful it is when peoples of this world work together in both cultural and musical harmony!

No matter what the subject is, most people scream and run the other direction when they hear the word "documentary", but this is an insightful, personal look at the creative process that created one of the American music industry's most successful albums.

Paul Simon and his musical cohorts offer personal stories, recording footage, and a history of not only of the album, but the circumstances--both private and international--that influenced the birth of the concept.

The only drawback to this collection is that one never sees a video from start to finish; and that--or a complete song performed live--would have been nice.

I always wondered why he decided to do this album, how it came about. This is a setting in which Paul Simon honestly speaks about the details of the album and it's a very good look into his creative process. You get to see his lyric writing method and how he worked with South African musicians. The dvd addresses the controversy caused by people who accused Paul of stealing music from Africa, and the African musicians dispell that by pointing out that they collaborated with Simon the get their music heard by a wider audience, which it did.
Paul ain't the most charismatic dude, but he's honest and it's a lot of fun to watch this album come together.

For God's sake people, the Classic Album series by Eagle Eye Media is a series of DVD documentaries about the *making* of classic albums. These are not DVDs of videos and music. This series will probably be of highest interest to musicians and recordist. And it's an excellent series with quality production.

Graceland: A classic documentary on a classic album.......2001-08-21

I for one am really happy they decided to release this program to the public. Originally aired on public television stations, I was glued to the set from the moment I saw Paul Simon sitting behind the huge mixing console. I watched as he intimately and revealed the meaning of each verse of the song Graceland and disected the mix piece by piece to the delight of my wondering eyes and ears. I have never seen anything like it in a music documentary. And then after reconstructing it for us,listening carefully, as if it were the first time, Simon confesses, it is the most perfect song and album he has ever done. This coming from a man who has produced a huge catalog of loved and respected tunes resonated and gave tingles when I heard him say it. The 70 minutes of the documentary insightfully covers the history of Paul Simon's mental state at the time he began the Graceland project through the tours that followed its release. The interviews with the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are particularly interesting as they reflect on their struggle to mesh their dance and harmonies with Simon's musical ideas. They are all gentle men who speak with such a softness joy and lack of guile that you can scarcely believe people like this exist. Listening to their mutual respect for each other is quite moving Mambazo's hypnotic movements are fascinating to watch. Equally delightful is watching the African studio musicians breakdown the development of the now legendary rifs and harmonies that makeup the album. I found the whole documentary to be outstanding and time well spent for anyone who has spent hours listening to Graceland over the years. It is a testimony to the greatness of the songs that people don't want to hear them interupted. But to trade some of the great never before seen moments shared in this documentary with full length renditions of the songs and videos seems unrealistic. And ultimately a bad trade in light of the fact that you can buy Graceland: The African Concert on DVD as well. This documentary is a rare gift to fans that I have never seen the like of and my world would be a slightly sadder place if it was not made.
