Rufus Wainwright is by nature and nurture an extremely talented singer-songwriter. "All I Want" lets the rest of us in on how this wonder came to be, with numerous samples of his "swing-pop-rock." His gayness is simply part of his being... oh for that day when it's that way for all gays... but it doesn't hurt that he's a babe! Some of his songs are "Gay," but whether a song is or isn't, the message and appeal is universal.

I'd have loved to hear Wainwright talk more about more of his songs and seen more performances. It's a lovely introduction to an infectious, engaging, very talented--nay, brilliant--songwriter/poet/musician/performer. The DVD covers a nice range of performance types -- concert settings with full band, intimate acoustic numbers (on a private stage or in studio), typical music video. The interviews with Wainwright, friends, family, fellow artists & producers are interesting, leave you wanting to hear more. Mostly I wanted to rush out and experience one of his concerts for myself.

Last night when I got home waiting for me was the DVD "All I Want." I intended to catch just a few minutes of it and instead spent the next several hours viewing it.

The disc features a documentary made for British television which really is terrific. It consists mostly of interviews with Rufus, sister Martha, Mom Kate, Elton John, a couple of friends and various producers who've worked on the various Wainwright projects. Rufus and company are very open about his life, childhood, drug abuse, musical inspirations, relationship with his father, etc. It is, of course, punctuated with lots of music, mostly live performances.

There are numerous bonus features, additional interviews not used in the final cut of the documentary, a handful of music videos, extensive concert footage from various shows, recording studio takes, etc. One particularly lovely song features Rufus in a concert in Montreal accompanied by the McGarrigle Sisters - mom, Kate at the piano (who wrote the song) and Aunt Anna singing harmony. It's really something special and sends the Montreal audience into a roar.

A favorite live clip is of a flamboyantly costumed Rufus (as well as the entire band) performing "What a World" which of course opens with tubas and segues into it's main accompaniment, Ravel's Bolero with a boldness and an audicity that is guaranteed to bring a huge smile.

For those of us who love opera AND Rufus - there is one wondrously hilarious video of the song "April Fools," which begins with Rufus waking up in bed (simultaneously) with Carmen, Tosca (a deadly serious Maria Callas clone), Gilda, Cio-Cio San (played by sister Martha), and Mimi who join him at the piano, scores in hand, and sing backup. Together they run through Hollywood each heroine eventually expiring according to her respective libretto. It is, like the boy himself, utterly charming.

I can't recommend this enough - it's priced right, and is a great introduction to anyone wondering what all the fuss is about.

"All I Want" is just about the best quality DVD I've seen - rich in content, artfully designed and authored, nothing less than superb in sight and sound.

In the feature length documentary (covering up to and including "Want Two") we are privileged to witness Rufus Wainwright opening his heart and soul (as he already does through his music). He holds nothing back - sexuality, drugs, and paternal conflict are discussed as honestly as is his struggle for music industry acceptance. Anyone who already likes Rufus's voice and music will be greatly enriched by glimpsing such a broad view of what makes him tick.

There is value in the included accolades from eminent musical celebrities Elton John and Sting. Elton especially could draw on his own life experience in guiding Rufus promptly to drug re-hab - which is the reason we still have Rufus with us.

But I believe that it's his mother Kate, sister Martha, close friends and long-term associates who clearly provide the ultimate relevance - after all they've seen him come through the trials an tribulations first-hand. "All I Want" is an incredibly moving, entertaining and ultimately rewarding biography.

I've been blessed with the opportunity to interview Rufus by phone and to briefly meet with (and hug) him at a McGarrigle Family concert in Brisbane (Feb '05) - I know that with this DVD what you see is exactly what you get - honesty, humility and unrestrained talent.

All of the many extras - including the music videos, live in the studio and concert performances and interviews combine to make this DVD great value - indispensable to anyone who might self-describe as a Rufus Wainwright fan.

Elijah Wood has one of his first post-Frodo leading roles in this mild-mannered comedy (the title of which was Try Seventeen in its film festival showings). He's a 17-year-old college dropout who moves into a funky old apartment building and becomes intrigued by his wacky neighbors. Mandy Moore plays the self-absorbed actress across the hall, and Run Lola Run goddess Franka Potente is a cranky photographer. The movie has a few surprises (the casting seems to suggest a teenybopper romance for Wood and Moore, but not so fast), although the energy level rarely perks up and it's pretty thin on actual narrative happenings. Wood's tendency toward fantasy is an especially tired device. A furtive sense of humor, plus the big adoring closeups of the highly photogenic leading ladies, provides the low-key interest. Trivia: Elizabeth Perkins plays the hero's irresponsible mom; she was also Elijah Wood's mother in Avalon. --Robert Horton

Where's the plot?.......2007-03-26

I bought this film from my work, despite never having previously heard of it, and going purely by the blurb. It grabbed my attention for some reason, so I bought it.

Big mistake.

I'm shocked to read other reviews giving it the maximum amount of stars. Did we see a different film? Cos it's absolutely dire. There's absolutely no plot, it's just a series of disjointed scenes, making no sense, and just plodding along. Nothing could save this film, not even the actors. Franka Potente has an accent that appears and disappears throughout the movie, Elijah Wood is really starting to look like Daniel Radcliffe's older brother and Mandy Moore doesn't sing. For once. Debbie Harry appears only briefly, looking like a relative of Dolly Parton. Then there's the dream sequences. I won't even go there. How pointless could you be?!

Then the was the whole mother/son relationship. Surely she could have had the decency to tell him more about his estranged father? Surely she could see the character was messed up because there was no father figure in his life? He's writing letters to his father telling him about everything, simply because he has an old typewriter of his father's, and he wants to be a writer, because his father wrote.

I hung about for all of the whole of the film, but never really giving it my full attention, thinking it was going somewhere, and playing Solitaire on my phone at one point! I seriously considered turning it off a number of times, and watching something relatively decent. But no, I thought it would get better. Don't buy this movie, don't watch this movie, don't even think about borrowing it. You'll never get this time back.

Now what do I do with it?

Worth watching again, and again!.......2007-03-14

I cannot belive I used to think this was not worth watching! "Try Seventeen" (aka. "All I Want") is one of the best drama/romantic comedies I have seen.

Every time I see it again I discover something new. There is always something special, a little twist, a reaction-- Always something new to discover, and always some reaction that is played so well you barely notice it. Worth watching again, and again. And entertaining every time!

Uhhh..........2006-07-25

Ok, I took my chances on buying this movie without seeing it first because I am an Elijah Wood fan and was interested to see him in a role that's not Frodo. He played off his awkward character quite well, but it was almost painful to watch because I was embarrassed for the kid. Actually, most of the characters were awkward. Maybe that was the intention, but there were some VERY strange moments that I didn't expect. I just expected more from the movie, and after watching it, it seemed empty.

Frodo finally gets some.......2006-05-31

This is a pretty poor romantic comedy/coming of age film, with all the conventions that you would expect: broken home, overly sensitive boy, wise older woman friend, rampant fantasies, etc etc. I really didn't find anything about it very interesting, with the exception of how his relationship with his mom evolves. But the silliness and frivolous ticks throughout the film never worked for me. All in all, I felt like it was a waste of time.

I loved this movie. I really don't know why. I just saw it and all my friends thought it was stupid but I liked it. This was a movie about love that just kinda played with your mind. The end of the movie left a lot of questions to be asked but I like movies like that. All and all the story was good and the acting was ok (they could have gotten better actors but hey no movie is perfect.)

I had to have my own copy. When it first came out in the theater I had
gone to see it and could not wait until it came out on dvd. It is really

I really enjoyed this movie even though it was very predictable. It also has some magic that really does make you stop and think about. The stars worked well together and it was nice to see Lauren Bacall again, she is such a wonderful actress! Enjoy!

Although diabetics should approach this film cautiously, one can't help but be enamored with this family film focusing on two youngsters who want their divorced parents to reunite for Christmas. There are no real surprises here and the ending is unavoidable, and there is even a schmaltzy ballad by Stephen Bishop. BUT ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS is entertaining and the relationship between the brother and sister is refreshingly real and touching. Ethan Randall (soon to be Ethan Embry) and Thora Birch are delightful as the kids, and Harley Jane Kozak and Jamey Sheridan gamely flesh out the stereotypical parents. Lauren Bacall is added for class value and an uncredited Leslie Nielsen appears as a jolly Macy's Santa. It's sweet and sentimental but still a Christmas movie the whole family should enjoy.
