If you love concert DVDs that offer first-rate music, excellent sound and picture, a beautiful setting, and substantial bonus features, then Alison Krauss and Union Station Live is destined to become your new favorite. It's not just for bluegrass fans either, as proven by Krauss's crossover success on the smash soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as her pop-oriented hits such as "Now That I've Found You." That song plus "The Lucky One," "When You Say Nothing at All," and others are the perfect showcase for Krauss's meltingly gorgeous voice, and admirers of the concert's two-CD set will also find out how funny she is in her between-songs banter. AKUS has never been all about Krauss, however, so there are also instrumental jams plus featured spots for other members, including Dan Tyminski on O Brother's rousing "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow."

The second DVD offers 50 minutes of interviews in which all five members plus drummer Larry Atamanuik discuss their influences, their instruments, and their favorite songs. There's also backstage and road footage, baby pictures, and more. Perhaps the only disappointment is that two songs from the CDs are not included in the concert: "Down to the River to Pray," which is heard over the end credits but not shown on stage--presumably because the CD version was not taken from this 2002 Louisville show--and "There Is a Reason." --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars AKUS DVD (live).......2007-06-27

I really enjoyed watching this video.
The music is very skillful and delightful to hear. Bluegrass & ballad style. Alison has a laid back and humorous manner, and she has a very clear and beautiful sounding voice.

5 out of 5 stars Alison Has a New Fan.......2007-06-16

I saw this same presentation on HD Net and was floored by this incredible talent. Later I found the concert was on DVD (received a Grammy for best live concert, you will hear why) and got it. I'm not a fan of live concert recordings, but this one was different. It is so good, I use it now as a system demo. There is no center front channel in Dolby 5.1 (Dolby 4.1 really) or DTS (both soundtracks are selectable), but I think this is an advantage. Spatial relationships are maintained between the two front mains and the rears provide the auditorium ambience. Audio and video are spotless.

5 out of 5 stars Alison Kraus and Union Station Live.......2007-02-13

Anyone who is an Alison Kraus and Union Station fan will love this DVD. Recorded in hi-def and 5.1 surround sound, you almost think you are front row at the concert. Alison's band Union Staion are excellent top notch musicians. Alison has the voice of an angel,it doesn't get any better than this one if you are an Alison Kraus fan. I recomend this DVD very highly.

3 out of 5 stars It doesn't do her/them justice........2007-02-03

I don't think this video did a good job of portraying how good they are in concert. If you ever get a chance to see them, don't miss it! The way her voice fills an auditorium is amazing. [Note: I've only seen them once.]

5 out of 5 stars Great !! A must have for all bluegrass addicts.......2007-02-02

I've been a bluegrass fan for quite a long time now, and for me, AKUS are the best : Great songs, beautiful voices, great musicians, seeming to have a lot of fun on stage.
Alison's hat a great sense of humour and her presentations of the musicians are excellent.
This DVD brings you in the concert hall at the best seats.
The sound is excellent (DTS)

If you love the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, and Nick Doob's exhilarating concert film Down from the Mountain will be sheer heaven. And if you're new to bluegrass and "old-time mountain-style" music, the performances (also on CD) will be a revelation. John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, the Cox family, the venerable Ralph Stanley, and other traditional and alt-country artists who contributed the music to the Coen brothers' spaced odyssey gathered onstage in May 2000 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame. Interviews and rehearsal footage set the stage for this stupendous concert, highlights of which include "(Didn't Leave) Nobody but the Baby" by the sirens Harris, Welch, and Krauss; the Coxes' "(Will There Be) Any Stars in My Crown"; and Stanley's haunting "O Death." As one performer recommends, "Just ease in, sit down, and listen." It could be your salvation. --Donald Liebenson

Description

On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. The concert that unfolded that night was one of the greatest musical moments in the annals of Music City. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites. 98 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the 60 year wait!.......2007-06-03

I kind of tracked this DVD down, following the trail from Preston Sturges, "Sullivan's Travels" (1941) where the Joel McCrea character insists on making a sociological movie called "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and then through the Coen Brothers' film to the foot of the mountain.

I don't know much about Blugrass music but even I could see these people were the best in their busness. The music is easy on the ear acoustic and powerful a cappella ~ and when it came to Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch, sometimes quite moving. John Hartford's folksy introductions give the show a pleasant informality and how cute it was to see that little girls (the Peasall sisters) still wear hair ribbons. The film is important because it bring together, said Gillian Welch all of he people in Bluegrass you ever wanted to work with" ~ also you get the Pennebaker technique of backstage chat and interviews with he artists.

The additional material on the DVD says Down from the mountain was "Fly on the Wall" Cinema Verite documentary - so "do not seek the treasure" of melodramatic Hollywood production values. Of course when Emmylou Harris holds up her baseball game she's acknowledging the camera and you don't do that with Fly-on-the-wall, but if you want to clear that one up, you can get always Keith Beattie's, "Documentary Screens" from Amazon. But whatever documentary form it was I'm sure the filmmakers wanted to give you the feel of being in the room with the artists...and as for complaints about graininess in the film ~ my guess is they that wanted to convey the ambiance of the Ryman auditorium so the the low lighting would have been a problem.

The film is good corollary to the "O Brother" and a good way to let future generations be touched by these people the way Hank Williams and Co. can touch us. It's also a nice piece of folk-art away from Hollywood or Broadway and a link to the less frenetic time in America (and Australia) of my childhood, at least.

5 out of 5 stars Down from the mountain DVD.......2007-02-13

This is an excellent DVD,anyone who liked the movie "O brother where art thou" will certainly love this. The songs from the soundtrack are done on the DVD. Alison Kraus,Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch really take center stage and stand out. All of the other performers are excellent as well, Ralph Stanley (what can you say). I recomend this DVD very highly. We have watched it several times and everytime we enjoy it more.

4 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough.......2007-01-29

This was the concert of the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" sound track. It has some great performances, less the famous "Man of Constant Sorrow", which is a real disappointment. But you get some excellent glimpses into the origins of Bluegrass music as well as some great performances from current and upcoming stars of this genre. A definite must for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Down from the Mountain.......2007-01-20

This is an excellent film showcasing the history and stars of todays bluegrass music. My entire family enjoys watching this concert/documentary over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Down from the mountain concert.......2007-01-09

I heard a song from this show on the radio about 6 months before The Oh brother where art thou film was released on DVD. On hearing it I was hooked! I have the film soundtrack and the DVD then this film was shown on satelite TV in the UK. It was so good I just had to have it. I was not disappointed on first viewing and I am sure I will watch it many times more. If you enjoy 'Bluegrass music' then this show is a must

5 out of 5 stars Slap Me Naked and Steal My Clothers.......2006-01-12

All superlatives from previous reviewers apply, and I heartily recommend your purchase of this product. However, I will agree with one of the previous reviewers about the format - the bios, while very worthwhile and interesting (really), should be in a separate section from the music. As good as the bio stuff is, I do NOT want to listen to it nearly as often as I'd like to listen to / watch the performance itself.

5 out of 5 stars FOR old time music lovers.......2005-07-29

This DVD is excellent. For those looking for a "front porch" type of presentation, this is it. The musicians are so relaxed that one viewing the program joins them in the mood.

These three musicians have a camraderie that is one of the best I've ever seen, and it enhances the feel of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, History On Stage.......2005-01-27

This concert was filmed 50 miles from where I live, and if I had known this concert would have been going on, I would have been on the front row. Wow! Down home picking and grinning at it's best! Doc,Earl,Ricky, you can't get much better than that. Of course the pretty Alison Krauss in between.
Exceptional talent-It feels like they are sitting in the middle of your living room just picking for you. A must have for your bluegrass collection.

5 out of 5 stars So Enjoyable.......2004-10-10

I just watched this DVD for the first time and have had such a great time enjoying the music and the pickers. I wish there were more bluegrass DVD's available. I highly recommend this to any bluegrass or old music fans.

5 out of 5 stars MORE! MORE! NEED MORE DVDs like this........2004-03-01

If only there were more Music DVDs like this! Totally awesome, a great tribute to old-time mountain music.

Shania Twain's Up! Close and Personal concert is both a follow-up to her bestselling 2002 album and an intimate show featuring Alison Krauss and Union Station. It's hard to imagine two superstars in the same general style being as different as Twain and Krauss, and it's surreal to see the latter singing backup on "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under," but the combination works. Up! featured both pop and country versions of its 19 songs, and while the intent here is to favor the country approach, the bluegrass sound of AKUS is more listenable than the album's twang and pedal steel, and "From This Moment On" could almost be mistaken for a Krauss song. It's still Twain's show all the way, though, as she sings lead for every song, including "I'm Gonna Getcha Good," "You're Still the One," and a cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long," which her husband Mutt Lange produced for AC/DC many moons ago. Dressed in relatively conservative black leather (!) and forgoing the aerobics, step dancers, and other pyrotechnics of older shows, Twain is personable and chatty with the audience that surrounds the stage (though no one is invited up), so much so that she can only get through 12 songs in the hourlong show. A 25-minute behind-the-scenes featurette helps fill out the disc. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Shania who???? .......2007-05-09

LOL I don't mind Shania, but to be honest I just got this because Alison Krauss and Union Station are her backing band for this live acoustic concert - adn they're brilliant! What generous, self-effacing people AK+US are to do this. Shania comes off as sounding good but a complete ditz in this.

4 out of 5 stars Shania is Captivating!.......2007-03-13

Shania is delightful and captivating in this relaxing show where she sings many songs from UP! and other favorites. She looks great and seems to enjoy being herself with the audience and the backup band. Union Station is excellent playing and singing with her. And Alison Krauss and Shania have fun bantering back and forth, as well as producing wonderful harmonies.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for Shania &/or AKUS Fans.......2007-01-12

Shania sounds better when she sings with AKUS (Alison Krauss & Union Station). Their bluegrass style suits Shania's voice and range perfectly. I wish they'd do this again! Alison and Union Station are EXCELLENT on their own, but when performing together with Ms. Twain, they all sound better. All the music on this DVD is good. The talking you can 'fast forward' through (I found it only semi-interesting the first time around). Shania's voice is complemented very nicely by AKUS' musical talent. There is a much more down-home feel & sound to Shania's songs when accompanied by AKUS - it doesn't sound "packaged" like her usual material (for which she's been criticized - I think unfairly - by the industry in the past). Worth the $18. if you are either a Shania fan or an AKUS fan, and definitely worth it if you are a fan of both, like me! I'd certainly like to find the songs on audio CD if possible [..]

5 out of 5 stars Shania's best DVD so far!!.......2006-11-01

With a very similar set-up as Elvis' Comeback Special - small audience,
no yellin' no stompin' like on the Üp Concert, dressed up in black leather
as well, Shania Twain together with the superb Alicia Krauss & The Union
Station present us a wonderful show with her biggest hits. The whole
atmosphere is very "catchy" and shows us constantly that this woman
can really sing and does not need those sometimes loud and molesting
POP bands behind her. This show definitely sounds more country-like
which really were her roots when she started out. No doubt, this
is the best and most authentic Shania you can listen to nowadays.
She's having a good time as well and explains quite profoundly the
whereabouts of each and every song she's gonna sing for us. A real
pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Real musicianship.......2006-08-22

Every song (all written by Shania and her husband) on this DVD is undeniably catchy, but I admit I bought it solely because Alison Krauss and Union Station were the back up band. I kept wondering how this bluegrass oriented band was going to pull off her up tempo pop hits, but they deliver every time in spades. They are consumate, and incredibly generous, musicians, letting Shania be the star, but adding their unique touch and bringing each song to another level. As she said herself, they make her look good. That being said, Shania proves that she can keep up with the "big boys" in terms of musicianship, and that she deserves her success.
