As a frontman, Huey Lewis has always let the band's music speak for itself. It's no surprise, then, that nearly all of the songs in this live concert from Grugahalle in Essen, Germany, are straight-off-the-album arrangements with very little monologue in between. The sound quality is only average, but the performance is vintage Huey Lewis & the News: straightforward, energetic, and tight. The highlight of the set is a blistering version of "Workin' for a Livin'," featuring Huey on harmonica and guitarist Chris Hayes. The first encore includes "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz," featuring both Johnny Colla and Huey on saxophones. The second encore features a long harmonica solo by H.L. followed by an early, up-tempo version of "Bad Is Bad," which later appeared on the album Fore.

This video is from a German television broadcast that aired on October 13, 1984, right around the time that the Sports album was released. In order to fully capture a live performance, it is necessary to put mics on the audience so the viewer can hear their reaction. Unfortunately, that is missing here. Also, the audience clips look like stock footage of German teenagers thrash-bobbing their heads and gesturing at the camera, seemingly detached from the performance on stage. This makes the whole concert video seem a bit contrived. But all in all, it's a good performance with a nice selection of tunes. It sure brings back a lot of memories. --David Martins

Karaoke is a way for average people to get on stage and sing cover songs. In Duets, it's also a money sport. No, really. As with other bar sports (pool, darts), the karaoke-for-money game is rife with hustlers. One such hustler is Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), who takes time off the karaoke circuit to attend the funeral of his ex-wife, where he meets his estranged daughter (Gwyneth Paltrow) and can't shake her desire to go on the road with him. The other hustler is Suzi Loomis (Maria Bello), a woman who literally prostitutes herself to get from gig to gig, until she meets up with a kind-hearted cabby (Scott Speedman). Then there's Todd Woods (Paul Giamatti), who gets so fed up with his sales job and being ignored at home that he hits the road, moving from karaoke bar to karaoke bar in a voyage of self-discovery. Along the way he picks up Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher), an escaped felon with a voice like an angel. All three couples end up in Omaha for the $5,000 karaoke finals. Chock full of bad writing and bad direction, the movie inspires a perverse fascination. Braugher and Giamatti chew up the scenery at every opportunity, but most interesting is the father-daughter incest subtext (compounded by the fact that the movie is directed by Gwyneth's dad, Bruce Paltrow). Eeeeesh. --Andy Spletzer

Description

Academy Award(R)-winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Best Actress, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) and Scott Speedman (TV's FELICITY) are part of the stellar ensemble cast in a hilariously offbeat comedy! The lives of six stranges become outrageously intertwined when a riotous road trip culminates at the site of the national Karaoke championships. As they compete for the $5,000 grand prize, this unlikely group will eventually learn all about each other ... while discovering answers to the questions about themselves! Also featuring great performances from Maria Bello (COYOTE UGLY), Andre Braugher (FREQUENCY), Paul Giamatti (BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE), and Huey Lewis (SHADOW OF DOUBT) -- you'll agree with audiences everywhere who fell in love with this uncommonly entertaining comedy!

4 out of 5 stars Better Than American Idol!.......2007-03-20

Winning at karaoke might not seem like a promising theme for a movie. It might initially strike you as providing as flimsy a foundation for drama as Sylvester Stallone's movie about arm-wrestling. But this movie works. And unless you are a devotee of karaoke, it will probably also surprise you. It will make you aware that there's a whole subculture out there that, like the world of pool players, is filled with hustlers, fans, newbies who become addicts, and a host of other colorful characters.

"Duets" isn't perfect though. It generally adopts an up-beat tone as it follows the stories of a variety of people who all converge for the finale at a high-stakes karaoke contest. The individual stories tend to be as life-affirming as the interweaving stories in movies such as "Grand Canyon." However, some jarring elements seep through. And in fact, the bonus commentary reveals that this movie was adapted from a novel consisting of violent, surreal episodes. Some scenes with that slant were indeed shot, but the director wisely chose to relegate them to the "Deleted Scenes" pile. If they had been included, the whole movie would have been derailed into some nihilistic view of a world ruled by random acts of brutality. As it is, this original conception of the material is only hinted at in the mysterious truncation of certain scenes and in a few leaps in narrative logic.

However, these minor flaws are more than compensated for by what became the overall arc of this movie. Most particularly, the chemistry between the players here is wonderful and universally redeeming. Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis as daughter and father have a real spark between them. Paul Giamatti as the escapee from suburbia and Andre Braugher as the hitchhiker he picks up similarly develop an unlikely, but very real rapport.

Most of all though, this movie is about the music. Almost all the actors here did their own singing. Paul Giamatti reportedly protested that he couldn't sing at all and wanted to be dubbed. But when the cameras started to roll, he blossomed into a song-stylist par excellence. All sorts of unsuspected talent is revealed, making this movie a better trip than a whole season of American Idol!

5 out of 5 stars Duets is FANTASTIC.......2007-02-02

For me, you don't get much better then stars who are known primarily for their acting ability making an attempt to try their hand in singing/dancing (with the exception of straight guys dressing up as girls). Duets is non-stop entertainment. I can't take my eyes off the screen when it is on. My only critique would be more singing, less dialogue.

4 out of 5 stars Duets.......2007-01-09

I like this movie because it is pure entertainment & moves along quickly. It's one of those "feel good" movies.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-11-19

This was one of my favorite movies. Unlike one other reviewer, I'd say this is one to watch more than once ..... like listening to a good album many times. I thought the story was decent, but the music is what really made the movie. Much like the music made Dirty Dancing (another of my all time favs). I also thought Mario Bello did a great rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me". This is well worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars For the most part... sour talent & plot.......2006-10-23

This is one of those movies you will want to watch only once. There was so much potential for the story line and comedy, but it appears somewhere along the line everyone just got lazy. The only worthy converse is between the father and daughter. Huey Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow and Arnold McCuller's acting and talent were great, but everyone else really lacked. Especially Maria Bello's, which I was really surprised that she was cast to sing since she has no talent and her voice just made you want to turn off the volume. There is a ton of holes in the story line and talent with this one. Save this for a rainy, bored day or skip it all together....

From yet another derivative science fiction novel by Michael Crichton comes this equally derivative and flaccid movie, in which three top Hollywood stars struggle to squeeze tension and excitement out of material that doesn't match their talents. You're supposed to find awe and mystery in Crichton's story about a team of scientists and scholars who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft deep on the ocean floor, but mostly you feel that this is all much ado about nothing. The exploration team consists of a psychologist (Dustin Hoffman), mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson), biochemist (Sharon Stone), and an astrophysicist (Liev Schreiber), and when they enter the alien ship they discover a mysterious sphere inside. What they don't know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts and perceptions, and before long the scientists' undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions and creeping paranoia. Who can be trusted? What is the sphere's purpose, and why is it on the ocean floor? Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, and it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made. There are moments of high intensity and psychological suspense, and the stellar cast works hard to boost the talky screenplay. But it's clear that this was a hurried production (Hoffman and director Barry Levinson made Wag the Dog during an extended production delay), and as a result Sphere looks and feels like a film that wasn't quite ready for the cameras. Though it's by no means a waste of time, it's undeniably disappointing. The special edition DVD includes audio commentary by Hoffman and Jackson and a behind-the-scenes featurette, Shaping the Sphere: The Art of the Special Effects Supervisor, exploring the alien ship's design and creation by special effects technicians. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars There is a hole in this "Sphere".......2007-04-02

One wonders what happened to this movie that could have turned it into such a shaggy dog. The cast is first rate(Dustin Hoffman , Samuel L. Jackson , Sharon Stone) and a first rate director in Barry Levinson, but the sum doesn't equal the whole in this mess.
A recently found spaceship in the ocean is found to be 300 years old and still working it appears. So a group is sent to check it out. They find smoke and mirrors but very little substance as this movie unfolds , and it takes 2 & 1/2 HOURS to get to the weakest ending of a movie in a long time!!!!!!
This shows signs of production problems and even post filming cuts and still it comes down to great talent wasted on a movie that wouldn't pass muster as a Saturday morning cartoon much less a major motion picture.

1 out of 5 stars This movie sucks ass.......2006-12-31

I just finished watching it. I have to agree with the negative reviews here. It's a confusing, boring and stupid movie.

3 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad A Film, But--.......2006-12-28

When a movie starts with almost five minutes of slow, dull, opening credits, you know that is not a good sign of things to come. While the original book by Michael Crichton is not the best science fiction that he has written, it is a story told by a competent author, however, the movie version is not nearly as competent as it has some plot holes an eighteen-wheel truck can roar through. But putting aside the plot, the directing and the acting by its stars, Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson-- makes the movie fairly watchable.

Critics complain about the ending, though, and rightfully so. But the fault lies not with anybody associated with the movie, but with Michael Crichton himself who seems to have written himself into a corner and didn't know how to get out of it in a better way. I won't give away the ending, but I will say that it's sometthing of a disappointment. But right up til the end, the movie is enjoyable enough so for that reason I give it three stars .

As an added feature we get, among other things, some less than thrilling look at the production designer's job, which can be forgotten about, but also Samuel L. Jackson's commentary on the film which is both really nteresting and enjoyable to hear.

1 out of 5 stars Inexplicably bad. What happened??.......2006-12-03

This movie is bad and it's the kind of bad that makes movie fans ask, "What in the world went wrong?" You start with a Michael Crichton novel, add Barry Levinson, a cast featuring Sam Jackson, Sharon Stone, Peter Coyote and, yes, Dustin Hoffman...and you end up with an inexplicably bad product. The special effect look expensive...and bad. The plot starts off ok, if somewhat formulaic and then just falls apart. Dustin Hoffman's performance, even, is laughable...something that just is never said of Dustin Hoffman. There just HAS to be a fascinating backstory to what went wrong and if someone would film the backstory, THAT would be a good movie, I'd bet.

The News is all good as Huey Lewis and his band take the stage on Live at 25, a concert performance (plus bonus tracks) marking their two and a half decades on the pop music scene. Filmed in December, 2004 at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA, the show finds Lewis in arguably better form than during his '80s heyday. The sound and visuals are first rate (compare this concert to the bonus performances from '85 and '87, which are by no means bad but which pale in comparison to the '04 show's digital audio and picture), Lewis' raspy voice is still strong, and the band is tight, energetic, and clearly loving being onstage. And lest one forget just how popular Lewis once was, the hits keep on comin' throughout this 90-minute show: "I Want a New Drug," "If This Is It," "Heart and Soul," "Power of Love," "Hip to be Square," and "The Heart of Rock & Roll" are every bit as infectious as they were the first time around. The Huey Lewis sound is essentially R&B of the type that Stax Records used to turn out, with plenty of screaming guitar solos to add a rock counterpoint to the Memphis-style horn section. But even if this music won't satisfy your soul quite the way, say, Otis Redding does, the energy never flags, and this unpretentious, honest, thoroughly entertaining performance is sure to liven up anyone's Saturday night. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-07

Saw them live in 1988. Yes, new members, but the same great sound. If you like Huey, I know you'll like this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Good...But Not The Best............2007-04-22

First off.....I've been a huge Huey fan since they came out in the early 80s. The music on this dvd concert is terrific...all the original guys, Bill Gibson, Sean Hopper, Johnny Colla can still play their butts off. Special nod to Huey for keeping himself in great shape after all these years. As a musician I can tell that Huey has lost a few notes in his range and is caught reaching several times during this concert. Most singers lose some range as they get older...it's no big deal. I just wouldn't show this concert to someone as their first Huey experience. Anyone who saw Huey and the boys back in the 80's will understand what I'm talking about. Even the Four Chords cd and video would be a better place to start...even has many of the same songs and cover tunes.

I'll always dig Huey but he's definitely not the singer he was in the early days....still plays a mean harp though!

4 out of 5 stars Huey is still going strong.......2007-01-27

I grew up in SF and was lucky to see HLN often playing small clubs in Mill Valley, Larkspur and Corte Madera (his home turf in Marin County). This DVD comes close to replicating the sound and performance of the small clubs, though admittedly without many of the original members of the band. Digital recording washes out a small portion of Huey's raspy, bluesy voice but overall the sound is strong and the mix is good. The a cappella portion of the show, which is a staple of Huey's concerts, doesn't disappoint. If you like the hits of Huey's heyday, then this DVD is for you. Chico State is my alma mater, so I was happy to see that Huey and the boys traveled a bit north of the Bay to record this gem; he always had a great fan base in Chico. Don't be persuaded by some of the negative reviews listed here, if you buy this DVD you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars We love Huey.......2007-01-10

Have been to many of Huey Lewis's concerts and it is great to have this DVD to watch and stir up memories from the concerts.

5 out of 5 stars solid performance.......2007-01-08

I was never a diehard Huey Lewis fan but this group definitely adds to that genre we call rock n roll. If you're looking for another dvd you can add to your concert collection, this one is worth the price of admission. I'm not familiar with all the original members so just having Huey as the front man and with the other members cranking out the songs as I remembered them, it was memorable, high-energy performance. One little thing was somewhat of a distraction to me. About halfway through the show, Huey's shirt had a meltdown. All of a sudden it looked like he got caught in a major downpour. Am I the only one that noticed this? But it just goes to show the man was giving it all he had. Who could ask for more?

2 out of 5 stars Out of sync.......2007-01-14

With my copy of this DVD, the video and audio were out of sync: the picture was a microsecond behind the music. The delay was sufficient to make it unwatchable. I don't know whether this defect is peculiar to the copy I received or exists in all copies, but buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars High energy entertainer delivers.......2006-09-05

Huey Lewis clearly enjoys being the "spotlight" for his band--he provides a highly energetic and entertaining performance on this DVD along with the members of his band, the News. This DVD contains all their great hits. It's a great buy for anyone who loves the unique sounds of Huey Lewis and the News. I highly recommend this DVD.

3 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.......2004-06-04

Randal Kleiser, the director of this average melodrama, is also the man who directed the classic movie, GREASE. Hard to believe that he could go from such a high energy classic to such a low key, ultimately average thriller.
Melanie Griffith plays rather vapidly a high profile defense attorney who has just gotten city councilman John Ritter off of a rap. Earlier in her career, however, Griffith got an accused rapist, played with fearless ham by Craig Sheffer, off and found out later while in bed with him that he did rape the girl.
Tom Berenger plays Jack, Griffith's ex husband, who is also the prosecuting attorney in the murder trial of a rising rap singer who Griffith is defending.
Nina Foch chews up the scenery as the presidential hopeful's mother, and Wade Dominguez underplays the accused rap singer whose rap songs are far from what one would call good.
At any rate, the movie moves along at a predictable pace and we know that there's more to the killing than meets the eye.

By the way, singer Huey Lewis does a pretty good job as Griffith's PI; he at least has some life to him
I Don't know whether Griffith played low key to show her inner strength, but she actually looks totally bored.
Not a waste of time, but it could have been so much better.

2 out of 5 stars A remake of Dumb & Dumber????.......2002-08-03

Melanie Griffith must've been strapped for money when she agreed to do this film. While she is quite good in it and credible in the role, her character does such stupid things -- not very smart for a supposedly smart lawyer. In an effort to catch a murderer, she actually allows the guy she knows to be the vicious killer into her house...at night...alone...and, of course, no lights are lit so that said killer can jump out at her/us and go "Boo!"

Well, let me go "Boo!" This film is too dumb to be believed.

4 out of 5 stars A big surprise!.......2001-09-28

Was very surprised how good the movie was. Didn't have any expectations and I thought Melanie Griffith was great in her role. There's only one part of the movie that really was cheesy and they could have done without, but all in all, it's a good thriller with some nice twists and turns.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars .crap for movie.......2005-06-12

Where to start with this bad movie?

As if the plot matters (it doesn't), the movie is about a woman and her sister who use hubbie's computer to access chat rooms, etc, and witness online killings, and of course, see the killer in a sort of "Eyes of Laura Mars" style.

The two lead males are played by non-actor musicians Roger Daltrey and Huey Lewis.
Lead females are played by former actresses Natassia Kinsky and Nicolette Sheridan.
The killer is played by a still-unknown actor.

Major problems:

1. Talking computers ("electronic chronometer activated").
2. People talking to computers as they type.
3. Never making a typo even when typing at an awkward angle and not looking at the keys (while talking to someone else).
4. Easy access to talking encrypted computer by using a microphone that you have to be an inch away from to use. And the computer selects only some of the words you say, as needed.
5. Really bad acting.
6. Un-sexy eroticism.
7. Over-technologized thoughout.

It might seem tempting to "save" 5 bucks, but you're wasting the other five dollars.

1 out of 5 stars Ctrl+Alt+Delete.......2005-03-24

.com for Murder is anything but spooky and suspenseful. The movie centers with a killer who selects his victims from a chat room and records the killings. Natassja Kinski and Nicolette Sheridan characters are sisters who end up his next stalking as they view a murder he commits.
Whenever a movie lets you know who the killer is then the script has to be really top notch to keep you on the edge of your seat and snag the viewers attention...this script is not one of those.
There is no character development thus you really have no idea why Albert (Jeffery Dean) is running around killing women or why he sees visions of blood everywhere. You have no idea why Natassja Kinski's husband Ben built a hi-tech computerized safe house that allows hackers to so easily access it. You truely have no idea why two talented woman like Nicolette Sheridan and especially Natassja Kinski agreed to play such brainless stereotypical victims, that it really is a let down for strong women (Lifetime televison would have a FIT)! Huey Lewis plays the FBI agent but really he looks so uncomfortable playing that part you think he just ate something unsavory.
The only two high points in the whole film was the beautiful house, truely awesome in its design and style, and Jeffery Dean who plays his part fairly well considering the limited script he is given. After watching this techno-diaster, you'll just want to re-boot and forget the whole thing every happened.

4 out of 5 stars .COM FOR DUMMIES.......2004-07-19

First off, what a house! Roger Daltrey plays an architect named Ben who has extremely computerized his house. Whether it was a set or a real house, it's awesome. Whenever you see the name Nico Mastorakis, you know what you're going to get: sometimes implausible plots; sex; damsels in distress; derivative and exploitative. The good thing, however, is that most of the time Mastorakis does it so well, you can forgive him.
Such is the case for .com for Murder. Nico spends little time on characterizations---we don't know much about Nicollette Sheridan, who plays Nastassa Kinski's sister; we never really understand why Jeffery Dean is killing, and what motivates his psychosis. But in actuality, it's not all that important in a movie like this. You're going to root for the heroines; you're going to hate the villain; you're going to say once again how ineffective law enforcement and the FBI are. And you're going to expect the Michael Myers-like return from the dead. And if you're like me, you'll still love it.
This is stylishly done, tense and much better than I had expected. Sheridan (Knots Landing) still maintains that California girl beauty and Kinski is still a stunning woman, and a capable heroine. Lewis and Daltry merely fill their roles, but they aren't awful.
A tense, tidy, and spooky little movie, makes you think twice about signing on!!!

2 out of 5 stars .com for lame.......2003-12-13

The writer obviously loathes computers and doesn't understand them, which is unfortunate since technology figures so prominently in the plotline.

Overall the psychotic killer (Jeffrey Dean) does a good job, but the thread trying to make the film somehow literate by having a Faust fixated killer just seems to try too hard. The ending is a terrible letdown, where it doesn't rely at all on the intelligence of the protagonist and seem inconsistent. Even though some of the killers "intelligent" moves were predictable and telegraphed, like the address and mistaken identity (trying not to be specific enough to spoil here), in general the murderer seems formidable.

Comparing this to "Hackers" is offensive, being that's one of the few films about computers that seem to have a clue. At least they didn't shoot out a monitor and act like that takes a computer out of commission. So encryption is when monsters come out on the screen? Come on.

Huey Lewis played the FBI agent like a cardboard cutout. If you can turn off your brain, it's not so bad.

4 out of 5 stars A worth seeing cyber age thriller........2003-03-25

This psychological thriller is something like "Rear Window of the cyber age". Nastassja Kinski is the beautiful Sondra Brummel who got stuck in a wheel chair due to some ski accident while her boyfriend Ben (rock singer Roger Daltrey) goes out of town. Misty Brummel (Nicolette Sheridan of "Knots Landing") comes over to help Sondra recover, and the two sisters spend some time together on the web, using Ben's password to sneak in some private chatroom. The Internet chitchats seem to be enjoyable until Sondra and Misty accidentally watch some suspicious guy threaten to rape and kill a girl (Kim Valentine). Not only they fail to convince an FBI agent (pop star Huey Lewis) into thwarting a virtual crime, they even put themselves in serious danger, because the psychotic killer (Jeffrey Dean) happens to be a vicious hacker who wastes no time tracking them down to their own residence...

Obviously scriptwriter and director Nico Mastorakis has done everything to make this movie an entertaining high-tech thriller. The website stripping scenes with porn star Julie Strain and "body double" Shelley Michelle are just appetizers to a lot of exciting and mysterious features that we can expect from (and should be watchful about) the Internet, and the digital visual effects and sounds do help make them more believable. As always, Nastassja Kinski gives a solid performance, while Nicolette Sheridan and the rest of the cast do their best as well (even Melinda Clarke is pretty cool in her minor role as FBI agent Williams). Although the DVD doesn't have any special features or commentaries, etc..., its widescreen and Dolby sound suffice to make ".com for Murder" a not-so-perfect but worth seeing movie. If you think such high-tech thrillers as "Hackers" or "StrangeLand" are good, you may like this one because it's somehow better.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not LIVE AT 25.......2007-03-20

It was okay. Live at 25 has better sound, better audio...and Huey has a better voice now.

5 out of 5 stars HUEY LEWIS MUST HAVE.......2003-08-04

HUEY LEWIS IS SO COOL. THIS SHOW HAS ALL HIS BIG HITS AND SOUNDS GOOD: NEED I SAY MORE?

5 out of 5 stars Harmonica Lovers.....you'll love this one.......2002-03-14

I saw Huey Lewis and the News in Seattle, right around the time this concert was filmed. I loved his concert. The music will get your heartbeat going strong (opening song..Heart of Rock n Roll).

The video quality is quite good on this dvd, the sound is good, but not like concerts recorded in this era. Huey plays an excellent harmonica for quite a bit in a few songs. He's fun to watch on stage, in the prime of his life, and the band is flawless. Camera angles and shots on stage were done well.

If you enjoy Huey Lewis and the News, this is a must for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for a HLN fan..........2001-08-04

.. but a few disappointments. First the video quality is sub par for a DVD in my opinion. Second, the video is marred by terrible-looking titles displayed for several seconds on each song--wouldn't have minded it if they were smaller and in a better font. Also Huey's singing on "Heart and Soul" at the beginning is drowned out for some reason. All of this is probably due to the original broadcast and couldn't be helped, but I just couldn't give it 5 stars. That being said there are numerous good points: Huey's harp solo, a short drum solo before "Workin for a Living", an uptempo version of "Bad is Bad" (different than the version on Sports), good camera work, and good audio quality (aside from "Heart and Soul"). Definately an essential for a Huey Lewis and the News fan!

5 out of 5 stars News On Stage.......2001-04-27

Huey Lewis & The News are basically a bar band made good. They made some tremendous albums, but it is their live shows that show the full power of the band. This is a live show from 1984 when the band was on the verge of breaking out big time. The show is a great collection of tunes from Picture This & Sports and they put on an energetic and lively performance. The band avoids any type of stage show and sticks to what they do best, straight-ahead music that mixes rock, pop and r&b. Standout performances include "Change Of Heart", "Heart & Soul", an acapella version of The Impressions "It's Alright", "Do You Believe In Love", a hard rocking and manic "Working For A Livin'" and a funky "Buzz Buzz Buzz". Mr. Lewis shows off his harmonica skills on an extended solo that merges into the show closing "Bad Is Bad". It is a real treat for any News fan to see the band in their young and aggressive days and this DVD is a must for any fan of the band.

4 out of 5 stars KARAOKE DREAMS.......2006-06-01

This film was directed by Bruce Paltrow, and while it certainly has its minuses, it also has its pluses. At the center of the film is karaoke. It is this performing art form that is the nucleus of all that happens in this film. It is the glue that holds it together. It is at the heart of what propels three divergent pairs of people to occupy the same space at the same time.

The film centers around six people, who end up pairing off in unusual combinations and traveling the karaoke circuit. At the inception of this film, all these people, even those who ultimately pair up, are strangers to each other. All three pairs travel their own route to get to Omaha, the location for the big daddy of all karaoke competitions, in order to compete in the karaoke finals for a grand prize of five thousand dollars. En route to and while in Omaha, they all discover a number of things about themselves and each other.

One unlikely pair consists of Todd Woods (Paul Giamatti) and Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher). Todd is a salesman who is fed up with his job and tired of being ignored by his wife and children. He decides that he is mad as hell and is not going to take it any more. So, he basically runs away from home. He stumbles into a bar, takes up the challenge to sing karaoke, and, voila, a star is born. While driving aimlessly, he runs into hitchhiker Reggie Kane, a man who has gone to prison for exercising bad judgment and is packing a semi-automatic pistol. He and the now nutty Todd form an unlikely friendship.

The second unlikely pair consists of Billy (Scott Speedman) and Suzi Loomis (Maria Bello). Billy is a young, straight-laced cab driver, a former seminarian, who has just had his world rocked when he discovers that his girl friend has been two timing him with his business partner. Wallowing in his misery, he runs into Suzi Loomis who promises to gratify him sexually if he drives her to California. She is an aspiring karaoke singer who does the karaoke circuit for the money. Unfortunately, she also does any men who might have something she needs.

The third unlikely pair consists of a father and daughter team. Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), is a small time hustler who can sing, so he hustles at karaoke bars. He goes to Vegas when he hears than an old girlfriend has died, and discovers that he has a daughter, Liv (Gwyneth Paltrow), after an almost incestuous welcome. Ricky doesn't want to be a daddy at this stage of the game, but Liv wants to have a father in the worst way. So, she follows him, and they end up hustling together at a karaoke bar, as she, too, can sing.

The one really disturbing thing about this Disney film is that once again Hollywood's inherent racism rears up its ugly head by casting the only African-American in the film in the role of the convict. I am sure the Disney studio was pleased with itself to be including a token African-American in the film in the first place. Why couldn't it think out of the box, however, and have one of the other characters be African-American? Shame on Disney for choosing, instead, to propagate an unflattering stereotype.

Still, this is definitely an odd, quirky movie about the wacky world of competitive karaoke singing and the denizens who inhabit that world. The performances in this film are excellent, overall, and the singing is terrific, although the ending is a bit of a stretch. It is not, however, a film for everyone. It is a film that will appeal to those who enjoy unusual, offbeat films.
