Description
Iced Earth founder/composer/guitarist Jon Schaffer isn't one of those metal musicians who only want to entertain their fans with their music. On the contrary, Schaffer uses his compositions to acquaint his fans with historic events and to kindle their interest in subjects that they probably wouldn't have access to otherwise. He has proved to be an artist who is fascinated by history and looks beyond the boundaries of his genre, basing his songs on educational objectives. Iced Earth's 2003 album, The Glorious Burden, was a milestone in terms of music and subject matter. Particularly the concert version of Gettysburg (1863) is a successful opener to a historic chapter that is directly linked to the contemporary US. The brand-new same-named double DVD is about to round off Schaffer's ambitious project.

Three days in the summer of 1863, at a place called Gettysburg. Although it received a theatrical release, this four-hour depiction of the bloody Civil War battle was shot as a made-for-television film. But no taint of cheapness or shortcuts should stick to this magnificent picture (well, except maybe for those phony-looking mustaches). Based on Michael Shaara's book The Killer Angels, this film takes a refreshingly slow, thorough approach to the intricacies of battle. In ordinary circumstances, those intricacies might seem of importance only to fans of military strategy or Civil War enthusiasts, yet in Gettysburg they come across as the very stuff of life, death, and unexpected heroism. If the film has a problem, it's that it climaxes too early: the first long segment, detailing the struggle of a "civilian soldier," Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), to hold his ground against long odds, is an enthralling piece of moviemaking. Daniels, in a heartbreaking performance, does his best film work. Other cast members include Tom Berenger, Sam Elliott, and Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee. Richard Jordan, in his final role, gives a powerhouse performance as Confederate general Lewis A. Armistead. Oh, and you can also try to spot Ted Turner, whose company produced the film, as a Confederate soldier. Writer-director Ronald F. Maxwell seems inspired by the gravity of the battle; long as it is, every moment of Gettysburg is informed by a nobility of purpose. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars An Long, but Intriguing Epic!.......2007-07-09

This film was Ted Turner's baby. He wanted to produce a movie that re-enacted the bloddiest battle on American soil. When it was completed, the film was over 4 hours long. Much too long for theatrical release. So he premiered it on his cable network, TNT in 1993. The battle scenes itself are worth the long run time. It's not too graphic and works as a historical referrence. That may be it's downfall, as well. Another is the long stretches of dialogue. Though needed for continuity, after a while, the film started to suffer from overindulgence. If you can endure it's length, you might find this film rather entertaining. Give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Gettysburg.......2007-06-12

Gettysburg is a great movie that was inspired by one of the most decisive battles during the Civil War. Ronald Maxwell, the director, hired a historain, James McPherson so help him in making sure the battle scenes were as true as they actually happened in 1863. Gettysburg has three days of fighting along with events that led up to the war making it very gory and action-packed. There is alot of death in this movie but since Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles with 50,000 American casualties, the amount of death in the movie is appropriate.
The first day of fighting consists of Buford trying to maintain his position in Gettysburg to make sure that the Union army has the best land position. The second day of fighting is centrally located at Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, and Culp's Hill. The third and final day at Gettysburg consisted of one of the most famous battles at Gettysburg: Pickett's Charge. This is the day that Lee realizes that he has to retreat due to too many Confederate losses.
This movie is, historically, very correct. The locations of the battles are historicall accurate along with the general's names. Mostly everything in this movie was, in McPherson's eyes, historically accurate. One can learn alot about the Civil War by watching this movie because it shows how the soldiers felt and lived and the effects of war on them. It also talks about past and upcoming issues in the war. This was a great historical movie but also very entertaining and i would recommend it to anybody that was interested, or wants to become knowledgable about the Civil War.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Referance.......2007-05-24

I found this movie to be an excellant composite of historical facts and charactors.
Heavilly based on the book "Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara.

5 out of 5 stars For Civil War Enthusiasts..........2007-04-19

Turner Pictures' "Gettysburg" is the lengthy but fascinating dramatization of Michael Shaara's classic Civil War novel "The Killer Angels." At mini-series length and populated with an army's worth of solid actors, "Gettysburg" delivers the gripping story of the three-day battle as experienced by some of the key personalities.

Among the highpoints:

Sam Elliot as hardbitten Union Cavalry General John Buford, who recognized the value of the terrain at Gettysburg and whose decision to stand there helps bring on the battle.

Jeff Daniels is absolutely superb as Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of the 20th Maine, a professor at Bowdoin College become a leader of men at war. Jeff Daniels manages to capture both the intelligence and the determination that won Chamberlain a Medal of Honor in the desperate struggle for the end of the Union line at Little Round Top.

Tom Berenger gives a nuanced and conflicted performance as Confederate General Longstreet, Lee's most reliable Corps Commander, who advises Lee against the Battle at Gettysburg and who must overcome his better instincts to execute Lee's orders.

Martin Sheen does his best to deliver as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, but only just fails to capture the charisma and the hidden steel that made Lee such a deadly and successful battlefield commander for so long. Perhaps the best of his performance in this movie is his meeting with his missing cavalry commander, J.E.B. Stuart, after the second day of battle.

The movie was filmed over the actual ground at Gettysburg using properly equipped re-enactors who add much authenticity to the battle scenes. The sharp-eyed viewer will enjoy picking out a number of actors hiding behind more or less authentic period whiskers. The magnificent score adds to the appreciation of what was at stake at Gettysburg, while the prologue and epilogue provide a haunting sense of the harsh fates awaiting many of the key players in the battle.

This movie is most highly recommended to fans of the Civil War who are prepared to overlook some TV-movie production shortfalls for an entertaining and educational dramatization of the Civil War's most fateful battle.

Description

Key battles of America's Civil War thunder across the screen in two richly scaled, rigorously authentic, powerfully compelling epics based on acclaimed historical novels by Michael Shaara. The tide of the war changes during three fierce days of combat at Gettysburg [Disc 1], the gripping saga of the tactics, command errors and sacrifices behind the bloodiest battle ever fought on U.S. soil. Gods and Generals [Disc 2] reveals the spirited allegiances and fierce combat of earlier Civil War struggles, framing its tale with the fateful clashes at Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. These sprawling films remind us of the people, passions and heroism that fanned the flames of a country at war with itself.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One is Classic, the other terrible..........2007-05-29

While they are both very accurate and both likely a civil war enthusiast's dream, the former, "Gettysburg" is actually a terrific movie, paced and written and acted quite well (except for some rather bad adding by extras...its forgivable). Gettysburg is a must for everyone. It is important US history of obe of our country's defining battles, told in a very convincing human manner.

The second movie included "Gods and Generals" comes from the same director, Ron Maxwell, off the novel written by "The Killer Angels" (Made into Gettysburg) son, Jeff Sharra. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't come close to what was shown possible in Gettysburg. In many instances, the movie is rendered almost unwatchable. While realistic almost to a fault, Maxwell sacrifices competent movie making for the sake of the hard core civil war enthusiasts. While the written word of the day was far more floaty and discriptive than today's writing by the masses, soldiers of day still had slang, and its hard to believe a second of the lofty impromtu speeches given by soldiers in the confusing of battle. This movie tends of be more a series of recorded speeches than providing any kind of vehicle to tell such an important story to the masses. The movie tanked at the box office and rightfully so...its an awful movie. And its a shame. Ted Turner (who financed both movies) subsequently lost faith in Ron Maxwell as a movie maker and sold off the rights to "The Last Full Measure" (the third book in the trilogy) for pennies on the dollar. Here's hoping a competent movie maker attempts the 3rd installment or Maxwell can make a return to his roots.

5 out of 5 stars The best on the Civil War.......2007-05-04

These two films are the real thing, civil war movies at their best, in addition to great drama and acting taking ones' breath away. They cover the first three years of the Civil war including the battles of Bull Run, Fredricksberg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg(Antietem is not included).

Gods and Generals follows the stories of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin and Stonewall Jackson but is mostly the story of Stonewall Jackson and his leadership and religious beleifs. This is a wonderful folm shot on location with many reenactors and brilliant acting, a fair depiction of both sides and real poetry in the language.

Gettysburg covers the three day battle that is seen as deciding the war and concentrates on Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet and Joshua L. Chamberlin and his main company. A brilliant film full of tragedy and love.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series and Historically Accurate!.......2007-03-17

I loved this series. As a Civil War reenactor, and a history/education major, I have to say that these movies are awesome. I would also reccomend The Last Full Measure. The only thing I can find that is NOT historically correct off the top of my head is that in real life Lee asked for time to decide between his country and his state. I also wish that they had covered what actually happened at the Wilderness better. The Wilderness caught on fire, and the soldiers who were wounded, but not killed, burned to death. This is a part of the battle that was completely left out of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Civil War Buffs.......2007-03-10

My son's and I have recently moved to North Carolina and have an interest in the Civil War. These 2 movies are excellently done. The visual and audio effects are both tasteful and artful. One of my son's was studying the Civil War in High School and he enjoyed the movies very much. I would recommend either of these movies to any one, not just Civil War enthusiasts! Pop some pop corn and enjoy these movies with the whole family. However, I would want to watch them first before allowing young viewers to watch them. They are war movies, afterall.

5 out of 5 stars Civil War History at it's best!.......2006-11-05

Both of these movies are based on the books by father and son historians Michael & Jeff Shaara. Gettysburg is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book "The Killer Angels". No school library should be without these two wonderful films and the related books. These movies were filmed using reinactors and are very realistic and very close to actual events. These films were made by Ted Turner and part of a trilogy. The third movie about the defeat of the Confederacy may or may not be completed (PLEASE Ted do the film!!). A fourth movie "Andersonville" is about the infamous southern prison camp (not for the squeamish!!).
I cannot recommend these movies highly enough. They are GREAT films for every American to view at least once so that they understand how terrible the Civil War really was. Very entertaining and not to be missed.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-15

I bought this and several other Gettysburg related books and films to help prep my son for a trip to the battlefield this spring. I did not have high expectations, as the previous reviews were so mixed. But I was still disappointed. Horrible acting and editing aside (I understood that this was filmed during the reinactment and these were not professional actors) the film was impossible to follow. The timeline and details of the battle were unclear as was the layout of the ground. The narrative was often difficult to understand and there were endless scenes of men moving across smoky fields without any explanation. Try another film if you are trying to understand more about what happened at Gettysburg.

1 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......2006-12-22

This is positively the best Civil War Comedy ever made, sheer genius in mocking Civil War reenactors....oh....were they serious?....

Has absolutely no bearing on the Battle of Gettysburg, if you're looking for a lesson in Civil War history and tactics, look elsewhere.

Borders on the ridiculous with the terrain looking nothing like the battlefield (I did not realize that Little Round Top was actually a flat field!)

Actors who mumble unintelligible lines, wear real pork chops for sideburns, and Halloween style uniforms, this has it ALL! Sure to make the staunchest Civil War buff to focus on another chapter of American History.

2 out of 5 stars Not as bad as some people say; a lot worse than what others say.......2006-09-18

This movie has many bad points and a few good points. Actualy it only has one good point: It has a lot of people. Asides from the the acting his horrible and the location which they did the big G-burg reenactment on looks nothing like Gettysburg so you can't even see the terrain like you can in the movie Gettysburg.

As I said before the acting sucks, but not as badly as some people think; there are some better actors than other like Joshua Chamberlain who doesn't say anything at least looks the part, and whoever does his voice-over is pretty good. But then there are others like the guy who plays James Longstreet, a man who in history was physicaly fit but in this version was extremely obese.
Then there are just some stupididly bad things: like the fact that the 20th Main the depict running though the woods is like 20 guys when at the reenactments they have thousands. Like the fact that they couldn't even get an actual flag pole to carry the Division flag the 20th Maine had, but a stick they must have found in the underbrush. Not to mention the fact that a regiment shouldn't even have a Division standard. One more part involving the 20th Maine is Col. Vincent - disgusting. I can't even describe it, he's standing there in the underbrush not doing anything with horribly fake sideburns and its just horribe. I'll take the "Gettysburg" Strong Vincent. There are however some mildly ok actors - the guy who plays the Irish Brigades chaplain isn't that bad.

Then there are the reenactors - never in my life have I seen such unemotional portrayal of a battle. Of course since the Gettysburg reenactment is one of the biggest reenactments it also attracts the most Farbs. I mean these guys don't even run from the enemy - when called to retreat they jog ten steps and stop to catch there breath. Half the Artillery guys have such huge bugles in there stomach that you would think they were pregnant women if they had not had beards at the time. Then there are the typical dumb farb whereing his fake uniforms with earplugs and other modern commodoties. Not to mention the women reenactors potraying mal soldiers don't even hide the fact there women.

Of course when the camera zooms out its masses of men and smoke and rather impressive to see - so if you like Reenacting videos you might like this if you jump around all its shortcomings.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-07-15

No a very good video. Poor quality. Hard to follow. Very much a cheat copy of the movie Gettysburg.

5 out of 5 stars Very good for low-budget effort.......2004-12-30

we purchased this as a souvenir of our Gettysburg trip and enjoyed watching it. It was more realistic than the reenactment altho that was also educational for us. really good if you keep in mind it is not made by fancy hollywood studio with big money effects. my kids learned a lot from it which is more than I can say for the baby-food-history you get in big theater chains

Description

Humans have relied on horses since the dawn of time, but there is no stronger bond than between a horse and rider on the battlefield.

Narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell, director of the epic films "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals", "Horses of Gettysburg" captures the relationship between soldiers and the horses that they so desperately depended on for survival.

Filmed in high definition with charging horses, battlefield panoramas and no "talking heads," this cinematic documentary tells the story of the estimated 72,000 horses and mules that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg and uncovers the strategies employed to ensure that the millions of animals in service with the North and South remained healthy and well-trained for action.

"Horses of Gettysburg" celebrates the honor and courage of these four legged warriors and their critical role in shaping the United States of America that we live in today.

From the producer and director of "EXPO - Magic of the White City" narrated by Gene Wilder and "Gettysburg and Stories of Valor" narrated by Keith Carradine, "Horses of Gettysburg" is a special edition DVD Box Set in the CIVIL WAR MINUTES® series.

5 out of 5 stars Horses of Gettysburg.......2006-11-11

I really enjoyed this DVD. I love horses and Civil War history and I thought it was very good. I wish it had a little bit more about Traveller. There was nothing until the end, and he is my favorite horse from history.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2006-07-23

It seems like the Civil War Minutes Series gets better with every production. The sound and picture quality have improved dramatically this time around. This new segment looks at the history of horses in warfare, the benefit of their use in the Civil War and has stories of unique tales from the Battle of Gettysburg. Focusing on the more popular stories from Gettysburg that included horse and rider(s) we get new insight as to how important these animals were.

From artillery use, transportation and fighting, we get stories of interest featuring such scenes like: The Bliss Farm, Kershaw's Attack, Farnsworth Charge, East Cavalry Field, Meade's Horse, Haskell's notes during Confederate bombardments on Day #3, aftermath casualties and many others.

I think this is probably the best production yet from the Civil War Minutes Series as there was plenty of useful information about the use of horses during this battle and in the war. I highly recommend this video.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Insightful Documentary.......2006-06-26

I thought "The Horses Of Gettysburg" was a Wonderful and Insightful Documentary about the care, training, and use of Horses and Mules at Gettysburg and during the Civil War. Most people are aware of the loss of animals during the war, but not the figures of actual animals used, wounded, and killed during the battles. This is a great addition to any Civil War film collection and I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Very Well Done and interesting.......2006-06-26

I thought this was a very well done documentary..I would of given it 5 stars, perhaps, but I've just finished Ken Burns again and that is the gold standard in my opinion. This set was well done and very educational and informative, the images are outstanding as is the content. A welcome addition to any Civil War collection.

3 out of 5 stars Gettysburg & Stories of Valor - Civil War Minutes.......2005-09-03

Interesting and informative. Almost a little too thorough as it lost me a few times. Very long; both my husband and I fell asleep while watching it. Aided in our visit to Gettysburg, but not exactly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing experience for Civil War buffs!.......2005-04-07

This is the first of the "Civil War Minutes" documentaries that I've watched and I'm very impressed. Despite all I've read about the Battle of Gettysburg there was plenty I learned from this outstanding film! Little known stories of extraordinary courage from privates to officers, and even civilians (John Burns, the Gettysburg resident and War of 1812 veteran who fought alongside Union soldiers and was shot three times, surviving miraculously!) are retold in detail. Actual artifacts are shown, from a blood-stained drum to a bullet-scarred Union jacket, that help bring these forgotten tales of courage and sacrifice back to life. Disc 1 focuses on Gettysburg while disc 2 is a "mixed bag" of Civil War information, from the infamous Andersonville Prison to the medical/surgical history of the war. Bonus features include an informative commentary with Michael Kraus, David M. Neville, and director Mark Bussler, an interview about Gettysburg, and bonus trailers for other "Civil War Minutes" films. Perfect for both the novice and the historian, this highly informative and entertaining documentary is sure to please all history buffs!

5 out of 5 stars Best Civil War Minutes To Date!.......2004-10-05

This DVD box set shows what can be done when you take the time to get the history right! I found the first DVD to be chock full of interesting episodes based around the Battle of Gettysburg. The 2nd DVD rounds out the set with stories of valor from throughout the Civil War - some of the episodes feature things this Civil War buff did not know! Be sure to check out the commentary tracks for added insight!

4 out of 5 stars Best one yet in the series by far.......2004-09-09

Many thanks are owed to Bussler, Neville, Kraus, and everyone else who clearly worked very hard to bring this documentary to life. The most professional of the series so far, they are palpably coming into their own as filmmakers while retaining the love and care of amateurs (meant in the best, noble sense). Also very nice for the more educated Gettysburg scholar is the focus on some of the not-as-prominent people and places of interest, i.e. Col. Strong Vincent and Culp's Hill.

The only drawback is one that one hates to mention, but nonetheless it is what kept this from being a 5-star review. Acknowledging that Carradine is a history buff and an accomplished actor, his narration at times drives one to distraction. Emphasizing the last word or syllable, in the same way, of every sentence in the film makes it seem like work after a while. It's not so much that it's monotone, but more like tri-tone. But maybe it was just my mood or something else. It might be the kind of thing that would go unnoticed by most people, and I hope it is.

On the other hand, the alternate commentary is great. With the exception of the bawdy and juvenile ha-ha regarding John Burn's statue, and uncomfortable silence that follows it, the track is packed with still more information than the actual documentary. It lends credence to the filmmakers' assertion that hundreds of documentaries could be made about stories from this auspicious battle. Don't pass this feature up.

5 out of 5 stars Gods and Generals/Gettysburg.......2004-11-19

These two Civil War movies are incredible! Even though they are a bit long, they still are great to watch: especially if you like history. The acting and music (score) in both of these movies are well-done. 'Gods and Generals' and 'Gettysburg' will actually make you feel like you were living during the time of the Civil War while watching them.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CIVIL WAR MOVIES EVER MADE!.......2004-08-21

Based on the bestselling novels by Michael and Jeff Shaara, "Gods and Generals" and "Gettysburg" (based on the elder Shaara's "The Killer Angels") are the most excting and emotional Civil War epics ever filmed. The battle scenes are the most exciting and realistic Civil War battle sequences ever put on screen. The acting is phenomenal, with the likes of Jeff Daniels, Stephen Lang, Tom Berenger, Robert Duvall, Bruce Boxleitner, Martin Sheen, Richard Jordan, Sam Elliott and Mira Sorvino, but to name a few of the fine actors and actresses in these two movies. Director Ronald F. Maxwell has created a masterpiece with his first two films, giving rise to the hope that the last film, "The Last Full Measure," will complete what will hopefully be the best Civil War trilogy ever made!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST tribute to the bloodiest and most tragic battle ever........2005-11-10

I've been a huge fan of Iced Earth ever since I recieve a copy of their "Days of Purgatory" cd for a christmas present a couple of years ago. I love to study history, espiecially the civil war, so naturally the "Glorius Burden" became my favorite album of all time, and the dvd only makes it better. Jon has a certain passion for history unlike anything I've ever seen nor heard before, and it shows in this music video for their thirty-two minute long epic: "Gettysburg: 1863". The pictures match the topic of each of the lyrics in the three songs, and is extremely accurate and to the point. Like a previous reviewer stated, the pictures do tend to get a little repetive, but thats the only problem in an otherwise flawless masterpiece. Also on the first disc, you'll find a tour of the Battlefield of Gettysburg with Jon and a licsenced battlefield guide, plus an interview with Jon about his history store: "Spirit of '76" On the second disc you'll find music videos for "The Reckoning" and the accoustic version of "When The Eagle Cries", plus an interview with the man himself, Jon Schaffer. All in all, this is an outstanding release and keep any hardcore fan tied over until I.E.'s next release.

      5 out of 5 stars Metal on a mission.......2005-10-12

Anyone who has heard Gettysburg knows that the music is excellent, and the lyrics are powerful. The video is incredible. With a combination of still and live shots, including both re-enactors and actual photographs from the Civil War, the powerful, terrible story of Gettysburg is told in all its grandeur and tragedy.

To make a modern reference for those who don't understand, more men died in three days on that blood-soaked battlefield than the US has lost in four years of war since 9-11. The Battle of Gettysburg was awful, and tragic and grand, and, ultimately, necessary for the preservation of our nation. For most metal bands, it would have been an act of foolish hubris to try to make this video about such a momentous event.

Iced Earth stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

1 out of 5 stars Not At All Interesting.......2005-09-24

This is a DVD by an american for american people in my opinion...the Cival war is almost all of Americas entire history and is not interesting in the slightest for me. I bought the CD as i am a fan of Iced Earths music...but releases like this just make me laugh at Jon. Most reviews on here are from Americans because fellow non americans like me are probably ashamed they bought this piece of "glory to america" nonsense. AVOID THIS PLEASE!!! no amount of books, dvds or TV programs can make this part in history exciting

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece which blends history & music brilliantly!!.......2005-09-13

Iced Earth's Gettysburg drives home the significance of the battle of Gettysburg to American and world history like no piece of entertainment ever has. Jon Schaffer uses his passion for the subject to fuel his metal masterpiece.
If it were only the song and videos Gettysburg would be worth it but the added footage of a tour of the battlefield with Ted puts this into another realm entirely. Ted's knowledge of the battle and his emotional attachment to his countrymen who bore the burden of the struggle is very moving. At the end of the tour he removes his hat and tells what he believes to be the importance of the American Civil War. He said simply that it turned a fragmented nation of I's into a nation of We. And, that because of that WE were able to survive events that have toppled other governments. That the shared tradgedy of the loss of 600,000 Americans united the United States into an unbreakable people.
His speech alone, impromptu is worth the price of this DVD for a history teacher to show their students.
This DVD is a must have for fans of Iced Earth, Civil War buffs, and all patriotic Americans.
If you're not an American and wonder why we're so proud, this video can show you why.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money........2005-09-01

This DVD is based on Iced Earth's magnum opus, Gettysburg (1863) from the album "The Glorious Burden". While I wholeheartedly recommend the CD, I think this DVD is a waste of time and money. I was terribly disappointed with my purchase.

The "footage" of the civil war is just a montage of pictures and cheesy flame and cannon effects set to music. The interviews are somewhat interesting, but if you are really interested in Gettysburg, there are a million books and websites that will give you much more information that you will glean from the DVD. To top it off, the tour guide for the Gettysburg tour feature sounds incredibly condescending, as if he expects the people who buy this DVD will have an IQ under 100.

The second disc has a couple of videos - The Reckoning and When the Eagle Cries, as well as a Jon Schaffer interview.

If you are a hard-core IE fan, you've probably already bought this. Personally, I wouldn't spend the money. The music on the CD conveys much more powerful mental images which are somewhat diminished after viewing the DVD. You aren't missing anything with the DVD.
