A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music.

The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell

2 out of 5 stars I was at the concert, I must have been drunk!.......2007-06-27

I was at this concert when it was filmed at Red Rocks by PBS in the early 90's. I must have been drunk because I didn't remember it being this boring. If you're a fan of the Moody Blues you'd like this. The band looks old and tired. It must have been filmed after their bedtime. I remember everytime they turned the lights on the audience everyone at the concert would boo. They edited this out. This has a lot of the Moody Blues hits. The best part is the 1st half. This is with the Denver Symphony. I fell asleep while watching the second half. It's a good concert to add to your collection. It does looks fair on a big screen in surround sound. Not High-Def. I've been collecting concert dvd's since I put in my big screen and surround sound. This one is at the bottom of the stack.

The Eagles concert video dvd is much better. Also, another good one is Celtic Woman. That one is also produced by PBS but it's more exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Great.... but needed more.......2007-06-10

This review is in no way meant to knock the Moody Blues because their performance was stellar and so was the awesome orchestra. 'RR' was great but....... It needed so much more footage to spotlight this great night, IMO. The folks who put this together should have added some extras: i.e., behind the scenes, making of the show, deleted songs (yes, there were several!) interviews, etc... You would think for an occasion this special they would have, but alas they did not. To get all the aforementioned extras, I had to buy the can-be-hard-to-find companion DVD 'The Other Side of Red Rocks'. Why Ray Thomas's truly PHENOMENAL and FULL-LENGTH performance of 'Legend of a Mind' wasn't on this one makes me think the editors got hold of some of Timothy Leary's little paper dots. This was a faux pas of the highest order. Still, "Red Rocks" is a must-have for any Moodies fan. Do yourself a favor and get the other DVD as well. Watch them back-to-back and be prepared to stand up and cheer your head off.

5 out of 5 stars A 25 Year Retrospective.......2007-04-15

This is a fine collection of songs that is very well performed and engineered. The only disappointment is that the DVD ONLY has 17 songs on it. The band had, by this time, released over a dozen albums and there is no way to cover such an expansive body of work without leaving out an immense amount of material. This is also a video that you can play with the grand kids running around.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Four Star That Could Have Been a Five Star.......2007-03-02

I saw the concert televised on PBS back in 1992 and recorded it on VHS. I purchased the DVD a year ago and I really love this concert. I think at times Justin Hayward's voice sounds a little tired but not enough to bother me. He is strong when he belts out Nights In White Satin. What I wish is the DVD had been put out in two discs because I know they played "Legend of a Mind" and "Bless the Wings (That Bring You Back)" among others. "Legend of a Mind" should never be excluded from a concert package. I have several Moody Blues DVD's and this one is probably the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.......2006-11-07

Yeah, after having it on Laser Disc, it sure was great finding it on DVD.
