Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2's career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined through blues, gospel, and early rock 'n' roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and B.B. King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2007-06-12

I finally watched all of U2: Rattle and Hum this weekend (on Blu-ray Disc) at home. It is incredible really. I have to buy this now. It follows U2 as they're touring for, and recording, the Rattle and Hum album, which is a tribute to Americana music. It's spectacular. They play Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For with a Harlem church choir, perform with BB King, and record tracks at Sun Studios. There are some songs in the movie that really pulls at your heart, one specifically is Sunday Bloody Sunday they're performing the same day (a Sunday nonetheless) as the Remembrance Day Bombing in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. Bono has the ability to convey through voice the emotion in his heart, and it's difficult to listen to him sing without becoming emotionally involved int he song. There is some comment on picture quality not being as expected on HD DVD and BD, but this movie was not shot in HD, so it's to be expected. The shots shot on Hi-8 look quite grainy indeed, and the shots in film look crisp, but still like film. I think the effect is actually quite pleasing and fits the feel of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great! U2 before their rise to fame. Great Music!.......2007-05-07

The interviews are candid. The music is priceless. The band is U2 before they were the megaband they are today.

The video is good quality, well edited and the sound mixing is done well, especially considering the fact that music is intertwined with voice throughout.

The albums covered on this are, of course, the resulting "Rattle and Hum", "The Joshua Tree", and all of their previous work.

You can see what existed in Bono, the humanitarian, before he was nominated for a Nobel Prize for his work in charity and relief work around the world.

The video shows the 4 guys, Bono (aka Paul Hewson), the Edge (aka Dave Evans), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullin Jr. being four guys from Ireland on a tour of the U.S. The coolest thing about this video is how it shows U2's discovery of American music; specifically the blues and jazz.

Best song on the video is by far "When love comes to town" with THE B.B. King.

The entire video is fantastic and I have watched it literally hundreds of times.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Go Wrong.......2007-03-23

This is actually one of the best concert DVD's that I've bought. It's a good mix of concert and live recording performances, mixed in with a few band member interviews. There is a great scene of the band singing along with a church choir, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Also BB King shows up for some live jamming with the band. Seriously, if you like U2 or Rock and Roll...this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Rattle and Hum BluRay.......2007-03-12

The film is grainy and not a particular improvement over the dvd version, but the real prize here is the sound. The DTS 6.1 is incredible. You really feel like you are part of the audience of the shows clipped here. YOu feel as though you are in the warehouse for "Desire" and in the church for "I Still haven't found what I'm looking for. When the film switches from the grainy black and white to the color for "where the Streets Have no name," the picture quality matches the impeccable soundtrack. This is a must own for any U2 fan.

4 out of 5 stars Trashed by critics, it's not THAT bad.......2007-01-21

Apart from a few time-wasting "interviews" where the bandmembers sit around acting like twelve-year-olds who are disgusted with the whole idea, this film is packed with some exciting musical moments. The prime example of this is the lads sneering their way through an incoherent chat in a warehouse then immediately giving a reeling, explosive rendition of "Desire" in the same setting.

Serious U2 fans need to have this for some definitive moments. Others shoud at least give it a try.

One of the best DVD's U2 has released. Everyone is fresh, jazzed and the movie holds your interest. The songs are some of the best performed by The Edge. Bono is always the showman, and Larry and Adam are solid.

    5 out of 5 stars Grreat HD-DVD, Grrrrreat format!!!!!.......2006-10-08

The DVD is a must for every U2 Fan, they never look or sound so good.

As for the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray that seems to go on here, i have both, and let me tell you that my 500$ HD-DVD beat the hell out of my 1200$ Blu-Rayer player. I'm a big home theater fan, i used to have a Panasonic PT-AE700U and the difference between both was evident on my 180" screen. I now have my dream machine, a SharpVision Z20000 1080p projector, and let me tell you that the toshiba player is a real performer, even if it output only 1080i, it's far better looking then the Samsung 1080p player. Now i just have to find a way to pay for the lease on that projector...... it's higher then my car......

I don't know why Amazon is having a hard time getting this title, but after I ordered mine from DVD Empire last week, I also saw it at Circuit City. Don't get me wrong. I am buying most of my HD DVDs at Amazon, but you shouldn't have to wait around for something that is already available somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars What does U2 - Rattle & Hum [HD DVD] has to do with Blu-Ray or Sony?.......2006-09-02

I usually don't write a review or drop a comment here. But what I read here today compelled to me say what I know from owning both Blu -Ray and HD DVD from Toshiba. First of all, if someone is trying to push a Blu-Ray product when you are looking for HD DVD product, obviously there is a motive behind it. From the reviews here it is looking more and more a desperate attempt by Blu-Ray or it's supporters to push you into buying an inferior format/product. Go to avsforum.com or any of the HD site to truly see why HD DVD has a by far a better product and Sony and Blu-Ray are engaged in false propaganda in a desperate attempt to save what looks like a lesser of the two format. Yeah., I kept the Toshiba HD DVD player HD-A1 and returned the Samsung Blu-Ray player BDP-1000. Those of you who don't have anything better than spending your time spreading false rumor, please GO GET A LIFE!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars re: wait..... a historical retort.......2006-02-24

As so beautifully put previously "Wait for Blu-ray, dont jump on the HD DVD bandwagon just yet, remember the laserdisc..."

Apparently this person hasn't heard of the SONY Betamax, SONY DAT, the SONY Reader, or the SONY MiniDisc, but hey why not wait and go out and buy sony blu-ray... everyone needs another high tech paper weight. Anybody seen my SONY Walkman?
