One Incredible DVD.......2007-04-11

If only we had this kind of concert in the USA! I'm a lover of gypsy jazz and a devoted fan of the Rosenberg Trio, having met them in The Netherlands a few years back. So I came to this DVD already a "believer." But this concert is FAR more than I hoped for. It is exceptionally well produced and beautifully filmed. I've watched it "edge to edge" maybe 15 times and I'd gladly watch it again! I especially like watching the expressions on the musicians faces as they communicate with each other - they know when a mistake has been made and they laugh about it! They know when the rhythm has become exceptionally fast for the violinist and HE laughs about it! This is why a DVD always beats a CD. There is nothing quite like watching master musicians having great fun as they play in the stratosphere. Nowhere in the USA can one go to witness such great and timeless musicianship. If only!

Hours of Listening Pleasure.......2007-02-24

Until a couple of years ago, I had never heard of Bireli Lagrene. Then I chanced to hear him play on an Al DiMeola DVD and was blown away by his virtuosity.
Well, the Lagrene on this DVD and the one on the DiMeola DVD are two very different faces of his musicality. I had no idea he was a gypsy musician, though I should have guessed from the tracklisting here. Lucky for me I'm also a fan of gypsy swing a la Django Reinhardt.
All the hosannahs have already been sung by other reviewers, so I won't echo them. You'll get hours of listening pleasure from this one. The music and the closeups of the musicians are both thrilling. Not only are the musicians getting into their performance, but the crowd is as well.
Hats off to Dreyfus Jazz for another sterling DVD. I have another of their DVDs by Richard Galliano and this shows the same attention to quality and value that the Galliano one does.
If you like gypsy swing or just appreciate great music, you can't go wrong adding Live Jazz A Vienne to your DVD collection.

SWINGING SOIREE SUPREME .......2007-02-06

This DVD is not only for guitar afficionados but for those who enjoy the sound of swinging Manouche Django-style guitars played with total brilliance. The technical mastery of the this soiree is a not only riveting, but the camaraderie of these supreme exponents of the art
creates a joyful occasion for players and audience. Bireli doesn't steal
the limelight, but it's obvious the tremendous respect in which he is held by his friends. There are some unbelievable moments of pure artistry that must have left the audience gaping. Even the tuning pegs come into play! There are not enough listenable and wathchable acoustic guitar concerts on DVD - maybe because this one can not be excelled.

Bireli Lagrene first appeared in the 80's as a child prodigy ala Django Reinhardt. Amidst the flashes of brilliance his timing was horrendous and phrases were not well constructed.... but after all, he was only 12 yrs old and this isn't classical music.

But Bireli has grown and matured temendously via his collaborations with the likes of the late great Jaco Pastorius and so many other fine musicians. So, it is fitting that he hosted this DVD concert celebrating the manouche (gipsy) jazz of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

As if Bireli and friends weren't sufficient to the task (which they most certainly are) Lagrene invites many of Europe's myriad manouche maniacs to this gipsy extravaganza.... most of them are monster musicans.

Angelo Debarre and many other truly brilliant players join Bireli, Floren Niculescu (violinist extraordinaire) and the brilliant accordianist Richard Galliano to burn the bloody house down in this "free for all manouche music melee".

With gipsy string music clearly showcased, these Certified Django Junkies perform 3 1/2 hours of the best 30 songs of that golden era..... all culminating in an "everyone onstage" riff-rolicking, string breaking, phrase stealing free for all version of Django's signature, "Minor Swing" that burns the house down........ Hell, I'm suprised the Paris Fire department didn't come.

BUY THIS DVD .... IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT...I'LL BUY IT BACK FROM YOU.......

Believe me, if you love gipsy jazz...THIS IS FOR YOU....!!

Wish I could give it even more stars.......2006-06-03

This dvd is amazing! By far the best dvd out there on the gypsy jazz style of music pioneered by Django Reinhardt. Most of the best modern players are on this dvd like Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, and Stochelo Rosenberg among many others. The great violinist, Florin Niculescu is also on here. Martin Weiss (violin) should also be mentioned. His performance on Dinah was a highlight for me. Bireli especially has some scorching solos on this dvd. He is always melodic and tasteful. If you are even a little bit interested in Gypsy Swing, then I would buy this along with any Django album you can find and the Bireli Lagrene "Gypsy Project" cd's. This dvd has almost all of the great standards on here including minor swing, sweet georgia brown, when day is done, dinah, dark eyes, djangology, cocquette, blues clair, i'll see you in my dreams, nuages, there will never be another you, etc.

Blistering.......2007-05-09

This is an interesting contrast to the Vienne DVD. I find Vienne more musical and organic. This one is flashier. Saxophonist loves the harmonics which makes for a pretty screechy tone throughout. Bireli's playing is solid throughout, though again in contrast to the other DVD, here he seems to be trying to impress with flash and technique rather than beauty and melody. Nice to see the archtop playing as well on this release. I know this review sounds kind of negative, but notice that I am only comparing Bireli to Bireli. It still is head and shoulders above most jazz dvd's.

One thought I had at the conclusion was that the track in which Bireli plays Bass is among the best. I am amazed to see a guy play that well on his SECOND instrument.

This DVD concert was incredible! The filming was very well-done,
the sound was great, & Bireli is better than ever. He may well be the
best guitar player alive today. Totally enjoyable.

Astonishing Talent !.......2006-11-18

If you like guitar music and, particularly if you play guitar, prepare to be amazed. I'm not going to get into one of those "world's greatest guitar player" discussions because there are so many different styles of music. At the same time, if there is a better guitarist anywhere on the planet today than Mr. Lagrene, I would be very surprised.

This terrific concert was recorded in Paris in 2004. It features Bireli Lagrene on lead guitar and (on one highlight number) bass, Franck Wolf on saxophone, Hono Winterstein on rhythm guitar and Diego Imbert on double bass. As soon as Mr. Lagrene begins the first number, it is obvious who inspired him to play his instrument--the incomparable legend of jazz guitar, Django Reinhardt. Several of the selections in this concert are a direct tribute to Django--"Nuages", "Minor Swing" and "Clair De Lune".

Mr. Lagrene plays most of these tunes on acoustic guitar, though he switches to electric occasionally. While he is a virtuoso in every sense of the word, he also gives the other musicians in the quartet a chance to shine, especially saxophonist, Franck Wolf. There is also a bonus discography and a documentary on Mr. Lagrene and his "Gipsy Project. Sound and picture quality are excellent.

I should mention that Side 1 of the DVD is in the PAL format--Side 2 in NTSC. So wherever you live, you should be able to play this disc.

When you experience a DVD that really impresses you, it's very easy in a review to go "over the top" with compliments and praise. However, with the artistry of Bireli Lagrene, superlatives are fully justified. For anyone interested in great musicianship, this disc is an essential addition to your collection. Enjoy !

This beats his last official release, which is hard to believe. This is so stunning that it almost too difficult to articulate. This guy just diminishes almost every other guitar player. Superb production values, camera work, sound. Anyone savy enough to be looking into this guy doesnt need my help in making this decision. Thank you Birelli and Christian for bringing these interstellar transcripts to us.
