Sound was poor, interviews and content lame. Near ZERO entertainment value.

playing the rooftop before the Beatles did.......2006-08-01
In the late Sixties Jefferson Airplane helped shaping the legendary American West Coast pop-scene. Providing a worthy answer to the British Invasion from a few years earlier, this scene mainly lives on by its epoch-making festivals at Monterey, Woodstock and Altamont.
In 'Fly Jefferson Airplane' we meet a very talented band, capable to hit the mood of its times. On top of that, Grace Slick's one-of-a-million voice lifts it to immortality.
We also learn that Jefferson Airplane had the good sense to disappear when the West Coast pop-scene faded away. Thus preventing themselves from becoming obsolete. As a result, this documentary shows all former members remembering the band positively. Cutting out any rivalry and other nastiness.
Inspired by French film-producer Jean-Luc Godard, in 1968 Jefferson Airplane disrupted New York traffic by giving a free concert from the roof of a building. Though the cops soon intervened, a new idea was born. The Beatles copied it shortly afterwards.
An outsiders take.......2006-07-21
This is a difficult video for me to review in a way. Hardcore fans of the Jefferson Airplane may as well skip over this one, as my comments are directed more toward other newcomers like myself.
At 44, I am a few years too young to really be part of the JA's generation, having bought my first rock album in 1974. It's amazing how even a few, short, years can place you in an entirely different musical generation. I grew-up on the progressive rock virtuoso's and hard rock bands of the 70's, and even by 1975, the "hippie generation" seemed as old and quaint as Hair Bands did by 1994. Things change fast. In the last few years, I've tried to expand my musical palette a bit, and have begun seeking-out bands and genres that I missed over the years. A friend told me that "Fly Jefferson Airplane" was an excellent way to become acquainted with the bands music and philosophy, in a relatively concise way.
Well first things first. If you are expecting a documentary, telling the history and story of the bands career, you will be disappointed. This is really just a collection of (complete) performance clips alternating between interviews with the band members. If you are interested in learning more about the band's history, you will probably want to try one of the books available.
As a sampling of what the band was about musically, and performance-wise, this isn't a bad place to begin, with caveats. The video, for one, only covers the band's 60's period, the latest clip being from 1970. Performance clips include the expected hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" (the only ones I had been familar-with)taken from television appearances, as well as actual concert film clips of lessser-known LP tracks.
Although it was interesting to see the band play, the sound quality of these vintage clips was understandably not so good, especially the concert footage, making much of the band's sometimes less-than-concise jamming difficult to make-out.
In other words, if you're new to the bands music, you may want to borrow a CD or two, to better hear what they are actually playing first.
As a non-fan, i was suprised by how raw Marty Balin's vocals were compared to the 70's crooning I was used-to. Marty could actually deliver a good ballsy, rock vocal. Who knew?
I was also suprised at what a charismatic front-woman Grace Slick turned out to be. She is one of those rare people that can command your attention without doing much other than stand there singing.
Unfortunately, I can't say that from what I heard, the Airplane's music was quite my cup of tea. It was chock-a-block with off-key harmonies, barely-there arrangements, and guitar notes bent wayyy out of pitch, so if you are a "muso" type that like their music played in a more "technically proficient" way, this probably won't really move you either. However, I will say this for them, their music is very unique, and sounds like no other band I've ever heard. There's no way you could ever confuse them with anyone else, and that might be the highest praise.
After all, Les Paul once said:
"You may have all you licks and chops down...but can your mother recognise you on the radio?"
Judged by that standard, I would say Les would be pleased.
Overall this is probably a terrific video for fans, but the iffy sound quality makes it not the best introduction to the band's music. Although, it is a lot cheaper than buying a career box-set, and the interviews are interesting.
