There's only one better way to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. This two-disc set includes more than three hours of music. Disc One features the 14 songs that were aired by HBO in 2001, while Disc Two adds another 11 tunes released here for the first time. The Boss and his band are in top form; their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo). Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems like "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the U.S.A." All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
Great concert.......2007-07-08
In 2006, Bruce Springsteen and his backing group did a concert in Dublin, Ireland in November, 2006. And what a concert it is! Much of the focus is on his folk singing from his album in respect of Pete Seeger.
The backing group is very nice. We see guitars, other strings, and nice backing singing. The whole is, indeed, greater than its parts.
Springsteen treats these classic songs (e.g., "Old Dan Tucker," "We Shall Overcome," "When the Saints Come Marching In," "Jesse James") as well as other works (such as his own "Blinded by the Light") with respect. And that makes this a really interesting and compelling CD.
Some examples of songs on this CD:
"Old Dan Tucker": The audience is really into this song. There is singing along. It is cool to see Bruce Springsteen sing this. The backing group is excellent. The singer takes this song seriously, and creates a fine version in the process. Springsteen is in good voice.
"Erie Canal": This old song, which many of us sang back in elementary school, is presented in a straightforward fashion. His voice works well with this song. Remember the old lines?
"Low bridge, everybody down;
Low bridge, we're going to a town."
Very nicely done!
"When the Saints Go Marching In": A version taken in a slow and spare manner. . . . There is a nice piano introduction. Springsteen provides an intimate beginning to this song--just him and his guitar. With repeats, more instrumentation appears. Nicely done!
Other nice versions of songs as well--from his own "Blinded by the Light" to "We Shall Overcome."
Thus, a very intimate and interesting CD. And it is nice to see the concert as well as listen to it. . . .
best ever.......2007-07-07
Even if you don't care for Springsteen singing, this band is the
best I have seen live or otherwise. It is a very long show besides.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-07
I loved this DVD, you felt like you were in Dublin with the band. The songs and performance were great. If you are a fan of bruce, you must buy this Dvd and the Cd. Just wonderful, I play it all the time!! Love it!
If you missed the show ..........2007-07-03
This is a very good chance to see Bruce with the Sessions Band if you missed the tour. I did, so I am happy they decided to put this DVD together. Overall, this is a very good show, which I am rating 9 over 10 or 4 stars and a half. Besides the songs from the Segger album, I particularly liked some of Bruce's old songs in new versions such as 'Atlantic City', 'Open All Night', 'Further On (Up the Road)', and specially 'Highway Patrolman', which is in my Top 5 Bruce favorite songs and that is presented here in what some have said the definitive version of it. Bruce holds his guitar like Johnny Cash, and his voice is sometimes very tired. One of his back singers takes over sometimes, and I really liked that. The Sessions band is outstanding. All members are terrific musicians and prove to be a true good companion for Bruce. The only one I don't like is Patti, who strums her guitar (I am starting thinking her guitar might be unplugged) and moans instead of singing. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I am already fed up with her and her posing, always keeping an eye 'on the prize' (Bruce) like someone is going to steal him from her. This is music, HIS music, and it looks like she just has to be there, no matter what. After watching this video and being annoyed by her any time she took over, I went back and watch the videos on the Seeger album, and there is one video where the band is out in the garden playing, and there she is .... clapping hands! C'mon please, give me a break! She also appeared in the documentary for the Born to run BoxSet (Wings for Wheels), when she was not even a member of the E Street Band and she had nothing to do with it! I used to like her, but not anymore. She always does the same and it bothers me. Other than that, again, this is a good show and I recommend it to anyone who likes Bruce Springsteen.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.
Best music from Bruce in years.......2007-07-02
I first saw Bruce and his band at McDonough Arena in Georgetown in the mid-70's. I have a vivid memory of a wonderful night, ending with a raucus version of "Sea Cruise" that blew the doors off. This album brings back all of those great memories - and more. The musicianship is fantastic, the emotions of the whole band really come out. They love their work. It shows.
The band's performance in this instance is especially noteworthy for its masterful jazz harmonies, timbral balance, and rich polyphonic textures.

Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanization, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (cowritten by Cusack). Early-thirtysomething Rob Gordon (Cusack) is a slacker who owns a vintage record shop, a massive collection of LPs, and innumerable top-five lists in his head. At the opening of the film, Rob recounts directly to the audience his all-time top-five breakups--which doesn't include his recent falling out with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle), who has just moved out of their apartment. Thunderstruck and obsessed with Laura's desertion (but loath to admit it), Rob begins a quest to confront the women who instigated the aforementioned top-five breakups to find out just what he did wrong.
Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum. Rob is basically a grown-up version of Cusack's character in Say Anything (who was told "Don't be a guy--be a man!"), and if you like Cusack's brand of smart-alecky romanticism, you'll automatically be won over (if you can handle Cusack's almost-nonstop talking to the camera). Still, it's hard not to be moved by Rob's plight. At the beginning of the film he and his coworkers at the record store (played hilariously by Jack Black and Todd Louiso) seem like overgrown boys in their secret clubhouse; by the end, they've grown up considerably, with a clear-eyed view of life. Ably directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), High Fidelity features a notable supporting cast of the women in Rob's life, including the striking, Danish-born Hjejle, Lisa Bonet as a sultry singer-songwriter, and the triumphant triumvirate of Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rob's ex-girlfriends. With brief cameos by Tim Robbins as Laura's new, New Age boyfriend and Bruce Springsteen as himself. --Mark Englehart
Description
From the guys who brought you GROSSE POINTE BLANK comes the absolutely hilarious HIGH FIDELITY. John Cusack (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH) stars as Rob Gordon, the owner of a semi-failing record store located on one of the back streets of Chicago. He sells music the old-fashioned way -- on vinyl, with two wacky clerks, the hysterically funny rock snob Barry (Jack Black) and the more quietly opinionated underachiever Dick (Todd Luiso). But Rob's business isn't the only thing in his life that's floundering -- his needle skips the love groove when his longtime girlfriend Laura (newcomer Iben Hjejle) walks out on him. And this forces him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how! For a rocking fun time, give HIGH FIDELITY a spin. It's sure to make your all-time top five list for comedies -- with a bullet.
Customer Reviews:
"High Fidelity" - still great after all of these years.......2007-06-09
Whether you're a John Cusack fan or not, "High Fidelity" is a great movie featuring the humorous antics of a younger (funnier?) Jack Black and a nice light romatic buzz. An excellent date movie for two people of out-of-the-ordinary tastes in music (great soundtrack).
Learn from the Anti Hero........2007-02-28
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's possible to learn from others to avoid those same mistakes yourself. I see that in this enjoyable movie. As with anything really good it seems to be more than the sum of its parts. You can pick apart individual performances and scrutinize every detail, or you can appreciate the overall message and theme. The overall sticks with me longer and keeps me coming back.
A John Cusack classic........2007-01-05
John Cusack is my favorite actor, so it may sound like this is subject to bias. However, it's easy to judge a movie by its talent, especially when an actors fills a role as perfectly as Cusack does here. He plays the fool he always seems to play in this cult classic movie. Set to a great soundtrack, Cusack owns a record store and frequently makes "Top 5" lists, of all varieties. The movie as a whole is a documentation of a critical Top 5 list in his life--Top 5 relationship breakups. The simple man owning his small fry record store relates his 5 worst breakups throughout life, dating as early as his middle school childhood.
Ultimately, this is a sappy romantic comedy, as he retells the good and the bad from all his relationship woes, and ultimately searches for meaning and growth in his personal life, as his breakups and/or dumpings relate to it.
Classic Cusack here, so if you like the actor, you'll love the movie.
Perfect Comedy.......2006-11-19
High Fidelity is a comedy about Rob Gordan (John Cusack), a record store owner/operator who has recently split with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle) and now is trying to get it all together. The movie opens with her leaving and Rob giving us his top five list of the most painful breakups. At work, his two "employees" Dick (Todd Louiso) and Barry (Jack Black) share his passion for music and to tell people that what to listen to. The top five motif is present throughout the entire movie, giving it a unique take on life. Rob cheated on Laura, borrowed money from Laura and hasn't given it back to her, and caused Laura to have an abortion. He pretty much feels like a jerk, but it all goes away when he finds out that she is living with Ian Raymond (Tim Robbins), his former neighbor known as "Ray".
When Rob realizes that he is miserable from thinking about his breakups from past years, he has an epiphany. If he just confronts each one individually, the pain will go away. To just see that they have moved on so he can move on as well, but the anguish over Laura resonates due to the fact that she keeps coming over to get her stuff. Now Rob must figure out if he should just move or try to make amends with Laura and get back together.
Cusack is fantastic as the funny, sometimes self loathing music enthusiast. He narrates just about the entire movie and some of the dialogue he gives us is priceless. Black and Louiso seem to be on opposite ends of the rock and roll spectrum but they come together to appreciate the art of making music even with their sometimes totally different styles. Black is very energetic as the self-proclaimed 'know it all' of rock music and Louiso is the calm, quiet rocker. Even Hjejle and Cusack's sister Joan give great performances. All together the cast did incredibly well.
High Fidelity is a perfect movie to just pop in one night and enjoy
Great comedy.......2006-11-10

Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.
Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.
Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
A DVD For Everyone.......2007-06-28
This DVD with Roy Orbison is for all music lovers, not just for his fans. It's interesting to learn how he has contributed to the music world, and how his songs have been used and reproduced by many of our leading musical artists. He influenced all genres of modern music, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and many others. When you watch this DVD, you will understand why.
Key performance.......2007-05-30
Filmed all in black and white, this is a non-commented recording of the performance only. Roy plays the usual songs and is backed-up by a star-studded cast of Roy's fans. Too bad that Bruce Springsteen keeps trying to take the limelight. Wikipedia has an excellent write-up.
One of a kind.......2007-05-24
It's a one of a kind show. Great performers, impromtu performance by great musicians & Roy is the best.
Out of Orbit.......2007-05-13
All I know is I just love this DVD. Packed with all Orbison's great hits with the dynamics of the rest of the Black & White night "gang". Five stars for me...
Classic.......2007-03-28
You don't have to be in love with Roy to enjoy this concert. One of the best I've ever seen

Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin' features 23 songs drawn from the band's performances in Dublin, Ireland at The Point on November 17, 18 and 19, 2006. Songs include fan favorites from 'The Seeger Sessions,' radical interpretations from the Springsteen songbook and rare songs appearing for the first time on any Springsteen release. This Blu-ray Disc captures the band during the finale of its multi-leg 2006 tour.
Springsteen's longtime manager Jon Landau said, "'Live in Dublin' charts the development of a band from an informal gathering in Bruce's living room to an onstage powerhouse. It also documents the growth in Bruce's vision of American music; it includes folk music, blues, Dixieland, country, swing, gospel, rock, down to and including his own writing. It's all performed with Bruce's classic energy and focus. I think it's some of the finest music he's ever made."
The Blu-ray Disc captures the band during the finale of its multi-leg 2006 tour. The Word Magazine (UK) said of a concert on this tour, "I have never, make that NEVER, seen a show better than the one mounted by Bruce Springsteen and his band at Wembley Arena on Saturday, November 11, 2006." The Sunday Business Post Agenda (UK), in a 5 star review, said, "During the concert's numerous high points, the crowd was ecstatic and Springsteen was the preacher, spreading a welcome message: We're open all night."
Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band's tour last year prompted other incredible reviews. "Sometime, somewhere, a more dramatic and exhilarating confluence of music with moment may have existed... But in nearly 40 years of concert-going, I haven't witnessed one," said LA Times. The Washington Post declared, "It was the best live show I've seen in at least five years. (And I've seen a few.)" Meanwhile, The Independent (UK), said, "It's been an astonishingly rich evening." The Observer (UK) proclaimed, "Springsteen and the Seeger Session band were an inspiring triumph.

simply great.......2007-07-07
I will start by saying I have been a big Springsteen for years. Have seen 5 of his performances live and he never fails to blow you away, the same goes for this dvd. The video portion is as good as it gets for a music performance. They did a nice job with not jumping around too much with the cameras.
The performance itself was as good as anything he has done. You really get into the scene and the music, wanting to jump up and clap your hands to the rythyms. The sound, I'm running out of superlatives here but the 5.1 pcm was totally awesome, putting you write in the middle of the band. Instruments and vocals are clear and precise.
I'm a total pervert, I mean convert to this form of music and oh! what he does with his older tunes, he should do more. He turned Open all night into something sensational.
Well, do you think I liked it?
If you either like this type of music or are a Springsteen fan open to new sounds do not run but haul a-s and get buy.
Buy the standard DVD.......2007-06-13
If this was really filmed in HD as label states I must need new glasses. Just to watch this "1080 Disc' that's unclear, quite grainy and undefinded.
The Music get's 5 stars but the film and or transfer is not of the usual grade for HD.
Sorry but to keep it real the standard DVD upscaled on a PS-3 would look this good without the Blu-Ray package.
the best music ever played!!.......2007-06-04
I live in Germany. The Blu-ray disc has been delayed here but I watched the DVD three times already. It is the best concert release ever and the finest music ever performed. I am a big Springsteen fan and I loved the Seeger Sessions tour (have been to 6 concerts) but even my friends who are totally not into Springsteen got goosebumps and agreed that this is the finest music ever played and the DVD offers the best sound quality we ever experienced. Everyone I know is going to buy the DVD and wants to see it over at my place again once I got hold of the blu-ray disc.
The picture though is not as clear as on Barcelona or New York City and it is way too dark. Many songs are cut and the audience's singing is not well integrated in the mix. The audience at these shows sang their hearts out and you can hardly hear it on the DVD. Only on some passages...anyway the greatest performance ever has been captured on disc with phenomenal sound. Everybody who cares about music and is open minded to something totally different, something never heard before is in for a treat!

The Boss is the Ultimate Boss.......2007-06-11
Everytime I play this DVD, I feel I am in the audience dancing around like a whirligig! What a privilege it would have been to be in the audience. Bruce was at the top of his form, the audience was stoked. What a joy to have this, especially after I taped it off HBO when it was first aired. If you love the Boss and the E Street Band, this DVD is for you. Buy it. It is history!
Don't think -- buy now.......2007-02-21
Fifty years from now, after the Springsteen songbook has been fully mined, some singer/musician will do some research and discover that not only was Bruce Springsteen the most prolific songwriter of the 20th century, but also its most charismatic performer.
Such will be the legacy of Springsteen. He will be acknowledged as the greatest of all American songwriters of the 20th century, bar none.
It is hard to imagine the E Street Band being in finer form than as recorded at these 2000 Madison Square Garden performances.
I consider myself extremely fortunate in that I was unfamiliar with the songs "Youngstown" and "Land of Hope and Dreams", which are for me the highlights of this set. Quite frankly, there is nothing that is not magnificent on this set. It ranges from the merely phenomenal to the extra-galactic.
"Land of Hope and Dreams" is a song that belongs to the ages.
It strikes me as noteworthy that these performances preceded 9/11, and thus "The Rising".
Bruce is an American icon. He is fundamentally that most precious of things: A Good Man. He is also a patriot who loves his America, the land of hope and dreams.
And then came 9/11. And Bush's war. And Abu Ghraib. And the destruction of America's reputation among it's European allies that is saved from fascism half a century ago.
This concert(s) mark a point in time. A true "end of innocence".
Other highlights:
You have to see the opening sequence of "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" to believe it.
"If I should Fall Behind"
"American Skin (41 Shots)"
But really, it's all great.
At this point in time, the ESB is nothing short of magnificent. I did not fully appreciate their abilities until seeing this.
The vocal harmonies, so diverse, are beautiful. Nils and Patty -- wow!
Max on drums. He's first rate.
Nils guitar playing? Pat Methany would sit up and take notice of his solo on "Youngstown."
I could go on. Just order the damn thing now. It will become a prized possession, trust me.
Bruce kills em'..........2007-02-18
This concert, shot for HBO, was just a phenominal concert. Great to see Little Steven back with the band, even though his voice makes my head hurt. Amazon got me the video very quickly, the prompt service I've come to expect to Amazon and most of their affiliates. Thanks Amazon, I'm well pleased again!
The BEST SPIRITUAL and INVIGORATING EXPERIENCE I've ever had!! Better than church any day!.......2006-07-13
I'm probably one of the few species you'll ever encounter: a 36-year-old African American/American Indian who has loved rock and roll and particularly Bruce's from when I was small! I saw this on TV a few years back, and I've been "reborn" all over again from just listening to Bruce, his wife singing in the background, the wonderful and awesome saxophone player (I've never known a saxophone to speak to my heart the way this saxophone player does)! Bruce and the E-street band rocks!! I'm going to get his wife's, Patty Scalfia, CD, as well! It's inspiring to see a female rocker rocking with her husband! In this world of the teen and tween rockers who sing whiny songs, keep showing us all what rock and roll is about, Bruce and the E-Street Band!!
Springsteen in New York.......2006-07-10
This was a decent concert performance by Bruce, however most of the songs I'd not heard before, and it took Bruce about half the CD to get with the program. Suddenly it was like someone reminded him he was being recorded live, and he jumped to it-- getting crowd involvement, and motivating his band to do more than just go through the motions of yet another concert.

Great concert.......2007-05-13
The sound quality is outstanding. My only complaint is that the DVD version that I bought is not widescreen. I had seen this concert on a hi-def channel and it was mesmerizing. It was a widescreen version as well, and I guess I was expecting the same experience. Don't get me wrong, if you have a standard 4:3 screen, this will do you well. However if you own a 16:9 widescreen display, then you will have the black bars along the sides. I'll probably keep my fingers crossed that a high definition version will one day be released and I'll pick that up.
Good Value.......2007-02-22
The dvd and added cd arrived in a timely fashion, the products were in excellent condition. I would definitely buy from this seller again.
The best live music video........2007-02-12
Those of us who grew up listening to Roy Orbison (and those who didn't) will enjoy this vintage Orbison music. The black and white production adds to the impact of the superbly mixed tunes. Orbison nevered sounded so good, and he's backed by an all-star cast. Unquestionably, the best live performance I've seen captured on video.
GREAT!!!.......2007-01-09
Black & White Night is one of best dvd's I have ever heard. If you like good music, You will LOVE this one. Orbison & friends give it all they got.
Incomparable.......2006-11-12
This is one of the most moving performances of any kind I have ever seen. The opening, with "Only the Lonely", sends chills down my spine. "In Dreams" is one of the most romantic songs ever written. There are good old-fashioned rockers, with nice interplay among the various members of the ensemble, and of course the inimitable ballads, culminating with "Pretty Woman". If you didn't already realize how amazing Roy Orbison was, the love and respect shown him by this cast of superstars is statement enough. It is hard to think of many other artists who would inspire such a tribute. I sometimes start the DVD to watch and hear a particular song, and end up playing the whole thing.
One wonders if anyone had a premonition that Orbison would die less than a year after this concert; it is fortunate for us that this tribute took place and was captured forever.

Call it Boss in a Box. This two-disc set of music videos and concert performances is a must for any Springsteen fan. While the 1989 VHS version contained just 18 songs, the expanded DVD set has 33 performances dating through 2000, including "The Ghost of Tom Joad," performed in 1995 on The Tonight Show, and an acoustic "Born in the U.S.A." from a 1998 appearance on The Charlie Rose Show. Most of the highlights are, not surprisingly, from Springsteen's electrifying concerts, including raw versions of "Rosalita" and "Thunder Road" from early in his career with the E Street Band. Also not to be missed: the 1987 performance of the harrowing "Tougher Than the Rest," shot with poignant close-ups of wife Patti Scialfa singing backup; the raspy, gospel- tinged "Leap of Faith"; and the barely contained smolder of "Fire." Most fans will find themselves wishing that this was strictly a concert DVD; the MTV videos from the Born in the U.S.A. years (the John Sayles-directed trilogy "Born in the U.S.A.," "I'm on Fire," and "Glory Days") seem too canned and glossy sandwiched in with the rougher, more exhilarating live performances. And Springsteen's tendency to get preachy in the late '90s ("Murder Incorporated," "Dead Man Walkin'") can grate as well. But until there's a full-length performance DVD, the Video Anthology will keep fans on their feet. --Anne Hurley

Customer Reviews:
Could've been so much more but a great collection. .......2004-12-16
First: They should've waited until "The Rising".
Second: Bruce has pro-shot footage dating back to 1972-1973. Starting it at 1978 with "Rosalita", running through "Born in the USA" and then "Born to Run" at the end, not to mention a mid-90s "Hungry Heart" promo on the second. The continuity is kind of wacky.
There's a whole show filmed for "No Nukes". There's "Austin City Limits" (which no one can find). There's 1975 footage at the Roxy in LA, and a BBC shot show at the Hammersmith as well as other shows that have been circulating on bootlegs. The Neil Young "Bridge" concert. The Barcelona video's great, but the marathon shows he used to do should really be out there for all of us to see...
Once Bruce started doing videos, he wound up getting top-name directors like Brian DePalma, John Sayles,Jonathan and Ted Demme. A lot of them are memorable and beautifully shot, but a lot of the "Born in the USA" footage just makes you wonder why he hasn't put out one of the shows on DVD. You see a bit of E Street history, including the era where he ditched those guys for a while, then working with them on "Murder Inc.". "Streets of Philadelphia" and "Beautiful Disguise" have Bruce singing live to a backing track, very unusual.
Bruce's fans will love this, but they'll love it more if they put out some of the footage that made people enchanted with his shows.
I was happy with my purchase!.......2004-09-05
Given that it did maybe have a few crappy camera angels & lighting; how could anybody be unhappy with their purchase after seeing him prance around in a pair of tight pants? This DVD collection made me wish I could have seen him in concert...
Near Perfect!.......2004-03-15
A nice summary of Bruce's early video work. However, why the edit on "Rosalita" - the band introductions (which were originally included when the video came out in the 80's) were a lot of fun. I'd love to find a copy of them.
Otherwise, a great presentation
Good live performances on disk 1.......2003-12-25
Disk 1 is very good with live performances. Disk 2 was not that great and is videos. I wanted the song Rosalita as that is the best song and is missing from latest DVD's.
Ecompasses the Best of Springsteen.......2003-06-30
This chonological colection of Springsteen's work is great for any Springsteen fan. The 2 DVD set is essentially his greatest hits in video form. A lot of these videos are live performances and show how great Bruce Springsteen is as a live performer. Bruce Springsteen truly is The Boss, and this video collection adds to the legacy. Highlights of the DVD include a rivoting live performance of War, found on the bos set, and a rare version of Fire, a song he wrote for the Pointer Sisters. This also shows some of the later work, including Secret Garden from Jerry Maguire, and Murder Incorporated from his greatest hits album. 4 out of 5 because of Weak representation form the pre-BITUSA era.

This intimate documentary is a must-have for Bruce Springsteen fans, capturing a magical time in 1995 when the Boss and the E Street Band reunited in New York's Hit Factory for their first studio sessions in 11 years. During the recording of new songs for Springsteen's 1995 Greatest Hits release, filmmaker Ernie Fritz was given full access to the band's collaborative process, including the live music video performance of "Murder Incorporated" for filmmaker Jonathan Demme. While bandmates and studio personnel offer insights about their history under Springsteen's democratic leadership, two people make particularly memorable impressions. First, Springsteen's longtime producer- manager Jon Landau is seen as a benevolent guiding force, with eloquent opinions about the uniqueness of Springsteen's artistic vision. Then there is Springsteen, revealed here as a genuine working-class hero, playful and generous while remaining intensely focused on finding the perfect approach to each new song. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The documentary Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers chronicles recording sessions for songs included on the 1995 triple platinum CD Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits, and captures Springsteen in the studio with the E Street Band for the first time since their work on 1984's Born in the U.S.A. The DVD features interactive menus, lyrics, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, and additional special features.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers premiered on The Disney Channel March 3, 1996. TV Guide described the documentary as "superlative," and added: "Ernie Fritz's film is more than a record of a legendary band's reunion. It offers a glimpse of Springsteen that fans rarely see." Blood Brothers was released on VHS on November 19, 1996. A double-sided laser disc version of the film was first released on October 1, 1996. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Blood Brothers features music from the songs "Blood Brothers," "High Hopes," "This Hard Land," "Back in Your Arms Again," and "Without You," as well as music videos for "Murder Incorporated" and "Secret Garden."

inside look at E street band.......2006-07-05
This was a very good look at a band that clearly are friends. The dynamics in the studio are amazingly loose.Clearly Bruce had it worked out in his mind but let the band members bring their own creativity to the process.
They had not been in the studio in years yet were able to bring it together in what appeared to be fairly quickly.
The depth of feeling between band members was obvious and felt real.
Very enjoyable and some great music.
Wonderful, wonderful!.......2005-02-15
This DVD is exactly what I hoped it'd be. Intimate.
Tender. Gritty. Real. Getting to see the band together
again, the nervousness, the ease with which they get
back into the groove is great. Having a window into
these moments is priceless. It's the closest I'll ever
get to the band I'm sure, and I'm grateful they allowed
us this glimpse into their lives, the band, and the
process of recording. There were a few moments
when the emotion of the songs and their collective
delivery, reduced me to tears. One special moment
to me is when they celebrated Clarence's birthday
at the studio. That's good stuff. Worth every
penny. There's no way to recommend it highly
enough, to old fans or new!
A collectors dream..........................2004-02-21
This a nice little edition to my collection of Bruce films. I bought this the day it came out, very good and very insightful on how the songs are created. Bruce just comes into the room and starts playing the songs while the other guys are taking notes, its like a classroom on how to build a song. Its like Bruce wants them to find a way to make the song sound good with there ideas.... hes very generous in that way...I thought it was cool the way he treated the gentlemen with the version of Secret Garden with the strings on it, he treated him decently even though that pompus idiot Bob Clearmountian didnt like it, glad he was outvoted...I personally liked the strings version myself...anyways buy this , you will like it....
Great for any music lover.......2004-02-19
This is a great DVD not only for the Bruce fan, but for anyone who is interested in how records are made. This DVD takes you right inside the studio like no other documentary I've ever seen, from Bruce showing the guys the songs on his acoustic guitar, right down to the tracking and shooting of the video. You'll not only hear from Bruce but from all the members of the E-Street band, the producers and the engineers, as to what it's like to work with him.
There are plenty of classic studio "spinal tap" moments, including Bruce chattering on for five minutes in complete nonsense about the "narrative" of the record and if the new string part on "Secret Garden" interfered with the narrative, they shouldn't use it..."so let that be your guide," and then walks out leaving them in absolute confusion. And then there's Clarence Clemens' melodramatic about the "melodies that were written millions of eons ago" that he's just going to snatch out of the air.
This is a very entertaining DVD for all lovers of music. Highly recommended
If you love Bruce, this is a must see.......2003-12-20
Two films come to mind when watching this, The Beatles "Let It Be" and The Stones,"Sympathy for the Devil". I would rank this below the former and above the latter.
If you love Bruce, this is a must see. One qustion though, why do they devote so much time to his manager talking about the friggin' Press Relase? Is this all that managers do?

Help! My volume won't go up any more!.......2007-06-16
You can't crank this loud enough. Bruce is the best live performer bar none. There are so many amazing, no, make that AMAZING performances on this DVD but all you have to do is watch one to be a believer--tune it right to "Born in the USA." You cannot look away. The energy is like nothing else, it is truly incredible that the energy can still be conveyed via a DVD. Even more incredible is that you then remember that Bruce is playing the song in Spain. This is a mind-blowing DVD.
Pure Springsteen Exuberance.......2007-01-04
Great fun! Like all Springsteen live performances, he puts everything into it and surely earns his pay. The music selection is great and the video coverage is complete enough that you really feel a part of the audience.
The audio is pretty good, but I find at high volume, which suits this type of music, the lyrics can seem muffled. However, the spirit of the performance is infectious and the lyrics less important. So, ramp it up and enjoy!

Great Concert.......2006-03-23
I admit that I'm a Bruce Springsteen fan, but I don't necessarily like all of his music. I had taped this concert, or at least an edited hour of it, on network television over a year ago. While I was off for about 2 1/2 weeks over this past Christmas holidays, I reaquainted myself with it. I watched parts of it over and over even though I had bought 5 concert DVD's that I'd planned to watch over the holidays and hadn't even watched 3 of them. I thought the concert was great, with the songs being in the same vein as his Tunnel of Love CD, which I really liked.
While I was watching the Texas - USC game in the Rose Bowl, I mistakenly put this tape in the VCR to record that night's episode of Law and Order. I was in grief when I realized that I'd recorded over the concert. I tried a couple of different sources to get another copy of that concert with no luck. I didn't know the concert was from his tour of The Rising album because I'd never heard the CD. I checked out a copy of this CD from our public library and saw that it must be, and that Amazon had a concert of this album that was recorded in Barcelona. I took a chance that this was the concert that I'd recorded and was overjoyed when I found that it was.
I have Springsteen's Complete Anthology and Concert in New York DVD's, but I like this one way better. Knowing that many of the songs are about 9/11 and understanding the context of the lyrics makes the concert even better. Clarence is in fine form on sax, plus I liked his wife Patti's and sister Soozie's performances. They all just love the audience going crazy over the concert. Great concert!
Excellent concert DVD.......2006-03-13
I've been to 3 Bruce concerts, and this DVD concert is better than any I went to. The power, and passion Bruce and the entire band exert is energizing, especially in the opening song "The Rising". The addition of Suzie Tyrell to the band is as Bruce sings on "Crush On You" c'est manifique! She delivers a sound, and a warm-friendly look which captured my attention. This concert DVD is a must see. I'm just praying it will be digitally mastered to CD, because I'll be the first to purchase it.

Another superb live performance in a career filled with them, MTV Unplugged: Bruce Springsteen in Concert (Plugged) finds the Boss at an interesting point in his life, musically and otherwise. Working without the E Street Band (except keyboardist Roy Bittan) for the time being, having divorced one wife and married another (singer and bandmate Patty Scialfa), Springsteen had released Human Touch and Lucky Town, two "solo" records, about eight months before this November 1992 MTV appearance. Selections from those two underrated albums account for over half of this 114-minute set's 19 songs (including three that weren't part of the original broadcast), and while Bruce is still Bruce ("Human Touch," for instance, is a classic Springsteen song), some changes are definitely apparent. He has always been an impassioned performer, but he seems genuinely energized by the presence of Scialfa (can "Red-Headed Woman" be about anyone but her?) and his young new band, including guitarist Shane Fontayne, drummer Zachary Alford, and no less than five backup singers. These folks rock their butts off, basically, especially on a wild, extended version of "Light of Day"; there's even some experimentation happening, like the various sound effects added to "57 Channels (and Nothin' On)." OK, so there's no "Born in the U.S.A." or "Born to Run"; as far as standards go, you'll have to be satisfied with "Atlantic City," "Glory Days," and an acoustic "Thunder Road" (Live in New York City, another superb DVD, is heavier on the hits). Anyway you slice it, Plugged is another welcome addition to the Springsteen catalog. --Sam Graham

Great concert DVD.......2006-06-14
Amazing surround sound. A fresh twist on Bruce's oldies and new hits. I love this DVD.
amazing concert film--- the boss is king........2006-03-22
This Springsteen concert film makes me very happy, causes some weeping, in fact it is a religious experience all around. He evokes at times the spirit of a religious revival. In particular, I like the "Meet me tonight in Atlantic City" lyrics and music, about unions and fighting for rights. I also like the "Fifty seven channels and nothing's on" theme that goes through more than one song. The Boss Lives!!!
bad James Brown imitation.......2005-10-31
I bought and saw this after seeing the Barcelona and NYC concerts, both which I love. The MTV show is a let down. The band looks skanky, like a bunch of heroin addicts. They gyrate and jump around but look silly, especially in one of the more poingnant songs where two of them are jumping around swinging tambourines like they're trying to kill mosquitoes. The E St band members, Clarence Clemmons, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Larfen (sp?), and Max Weinberg all have charisma, and could front their own bands and carry a show, but they complement the Boss. The band members in the MTV show have zero charisma. Maybe the Boss was trying for a James Brown feel, with a lot of musicians and backup singers on stage, but Brown's band always wears matching, dress clothes, and they don't divert attention from Brown.
GREAT PRODUCT,JUST AS I THOUGHT IT'D BE.......2005-10-08
I WAS GLAD TO ADD -FINALLY -THIS PIECE TO MY OWN "BOSS"COLLECTION.EXCELENT DELIVERY & PAKEGING!THANKS A LOT!WELL DONE EVERYBODY.PEACE!
Can't Compete With an E-Street Show...Or the Other Boss DVDs.......2005-02-05
Saying anything from The Man, Bruce Springsteen, is disapointing automaticly implies "disapointing" is a relative term. What is a dispointing effort from the Boss would generaly be the apex of many-a-lesser artists' careers. Also, Bruce usually has enough high points on even his lesser performances to elevate it above disapointing, no matter what the low points. While "Plugged" is no exception, it is still ultimately a disapointment.
Yes, most of the problem here is the fact that it is, at best, odd watching Bruce try to summon up his legendary energy with a different, lesser band; at worst it feels downright wrong.
Seeing Springsteen along side any other band would, and does, feel somewhat blasphimus, but along side this band, which includes a long-haired guitarist who looks like a Guns N' Roses reject and a lame chorus of doo-wop back-up vocalists, the whole thing feels more like a sin.
I understand artists wants to grow and try new things with new performers, but Springsteen's concerts and albums at this time were not indicative of someone growing. They were a step backwards - or at least in the wrong direction. It may not all be because the E-Street Band was absent, Bruce may have suffered this relative career lull with or without them at his side, but when you look at what was different at the time, what else can one place the blame on?
Now, BEFORE SOMEONE WRITES A REVIEW TRASHING THIS ONE AS NARROW-MINDED - DON'T GET ME WRONG! - keep in mind, when I say "wrong direction," the phrase, again, is relative. Maybe a better way to put it is 'vearing off the path for a moment.' I still have a lot of fondness for many songs from "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" - I love "Human Touch," "Better Days," "Leap Of Faith," "Big Muddy," and "Lucky Town" - and this DVD has pleasurable moments to be sure ("Red Headed Woman" is a kick and it is the only place you can hear live cuts from the aformentioned albums, including the aformentioned songs), but neither of those albums, or this DVD, can rival anything including the E-Street Band.
This band is not bad. They seem quite good. But they don't fit. Maybe its because we are used to, and want to, see Bruce with E-Street - I'm sure that's a big part of it - but a big part is also the fact that Springsteen just doesn't look like he belongs with them no matter who he has played with before. They look as if they are from two different musical eras (Like seeing Bob Dylan on stage with Outkast - I hope I dind't just give anyone any crazy ideas because I see record execs constantly trying crazy sh*t like this ). They don't look alike, they don't play alike and worst of all, they don't seem comfortable with one another. All the effortless comradere of the E-Street Band is completely missing here and classic, genuine moments with E-Street - like three band members gathering around one mic - couldn't feel more forced and out of place here.
The Unplugged, sorry, "Plugged," setting is also a problem. Bruce is confined to a small stage, working a small room. Never a problem for him at an acoustic show, in fact, some of his sitdown performances with just a guitar or a piano rank with some of his best, but this is a plugged show in an unplugged setting. He can't realy cut loose, but he knows he's suposed to, so we get a Bruce-lite performance; an imitation of the real thing. Again, the effortless energy of other performances is lost in translation and everything else feels forced or tired. What book ends the concert, an acoustic "Red Headed Woman" for an opener and an acoustic "Thunder Road," are the best moments; and go figure since it is just Bruce with a guitar and the audience - the acoustic show that it feels like the whole show should be.
And lastly, none of this sounds as good as when it is performed with E-Street. I love Springsteen live. LOVE HIM! I don't just mean being at the concert, but I love the other two Live DVDs. I have only had Barcelona for a year and I have worn it out in spots. Many times I don't even watch, I just put it on with the surround sound while I'm doing whatever, like a live album (if you are wondering how I can say this while some reviews here imply that this DVD is better, I think they are refering to the audio, to which I say, go see my review of that DVD - I'm still dumbfounded by what some have said about the sound). If you need proof, just put 'em side by side. The chintzy-sounding "Atlantic City" on this DVD, or the thundering, emotionaly-charged version on the New York DVD? "Light Of Day" from New York is a funny and invigorating powerhouse! The version here feels like someone else's pale imitation. Granted, with both tracks, maybe they just aged better as he ironed out these obvious wrinkles over the years.
At any rate, of the DVDs, why get the one that feels like an imiation or a work in progess? Better yet, why get one that doesn't show Bruce in his true element with the best band? Not just his best band, but maybe the best backing band in rock history.
Now, I am a completist fan of Springsteen, so I enjoy having this item just as a collectable. And, again, I like a few of the performances here. I hate to sound too down on it. Think of it this way; I gave the New York and Barcelona DVDs 5-Stars. If I could have given them 15-Stars (or more) I would have. This one I'm giving 3. And that feels just about right.
