Description
Eric Clapton has achieved the seemingly impossible, becoming more popular in his most recent 10 years onstage than in his first decade in the spotlight. His 1997 Live In Hyde Park home video documented a triumphant concert of the previous summer that followed his massive "Tears In Heaven" hit a few years earlier. This is classic rockin' and guitar-wailin' blues-is-king Clapton, from new versions of his Derek and The Dominos' "Layla" and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" to Cream's "White Room" and "Badge" to his solo hit of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" to B.B. King's "Every Day I Have the Blues." Added to the original home video's lineup is Clapton's rendition of the Muddy Waters electric blues "Hoochie Coochie Man" and the blues standard "It Hurts Me Too," which Clapton reprised on From the Cradle. Other tracks include: Wonderful Tonight; Five Long Years; Tearin' Us Apart; Old Love; I'm Torn Down; Holy Mother. 89 minutes.

Customer Reviews:
Good selection of songs with a great sound.......2007-06-27
One of the best Clapton DVDs out there. The surround sound could be better, but the recording is still top notch.
Great DVD.......2007-06-07
Anyone who likes Clapton needs to own this. The only reason it gets a four instead of five is the unplugged version of Layla. Although it always sounds great played like this, I'm more of a fan of the classic version of the song with the long outro played with the piano ala Goodfellows.
gadd is good.......2007-05-14
excellent sound , great solos . shot the sheriff is a standout, with gadd in top form keepin it all together as usual. His tom work and soul in wonderful tonight is worth the price alone.
With All Due Respect.......2007-04-27
I bought this DVD with high hopes, despite Joshua's comment about "I Shot The Sherrif," because of all of the other rave reviews of it being the best of all, etc. I am also going to preface this by saying that I am a huge Clapton fan. I have been had the great pleasure of seeing him perform live and own virtually all of his DVD's and most of the CD's as well. While I don't quite agree with some that he is, in fact, God, I do believe God definitely plays through his hands. In another life, I would certainly hope to have the talent to do what he does. However you want to take that, my point is that on a bad day he is one of the top 3 humans who have ever played a guitar, regardless of the style. That said, that day at Hyde Park was not his best performance by a long shot. For one thing, there were probably 200,000 people in the crowd, so the sound engineering was set up accordingly. But in the DVD transfer, to me the clarity of his work as well as that of his band got muffled and a bit lost in the wind and ominous weather that day. And maybe because of the monstrous crowd size, he seemed as though he was a bit detached and unconnected to the crowd. Compared with other performances of his, this one looked stiff and wooden. Again, although he can be the best on a bad day, this was one of them. By the time he got to "I Shot the Sherrif," I too was looking to the remote to skip the song. In my opinion it was that bad of a rendition of what is truly one of my favorite songs. I hung in to watch his guitar work and the blonde singer doing backup, but a lesser fan would not have been as likely to. I would not recommend this piece and gave it 3 stars only because of who Clapton is.
Clapton brings out the Blues at Hyde Park.......2007-04-24
This concert from the summer of 1996 finds Eric Clapton in fine form playing to a huge crowd at London's Hyde Park for the first time in many years. Eric is backed by a good band here that includes the great Steve Gadd on drums and Muddy Waters former harmonica player Jerry Portnoy who adds some authentic blues flavor to several of the songs.
This DVD, which features excellent sound and picture quality, will please those who appreciate the blues side of Clapton. He avoids most of his commercial pop/rock material in this performance to focus on a nice selection of classic blues with a couple of Cream songs and solo hits thrown in. At least half the songs performed are blues standards, including several from his great 1994 album From the Cradle.
Eric belts out a powerful version of the Elmore James classic "It hurts me too" that spotlights his ability on the slide guitar. "Five long years" is another highlight of the show where he and the band let loose with some hot blues solos, and Clapton also includes a two-song tribute to legendary bluesman Freddie King with "I'm Tore Down" and the great slow blues "Have you ever loved a woman". While Eric Clapton is a legend in the world of rock music, this concert is further proof that the blues is where he really shines the most.
Anyone who enjoys Eric's guitar playing in this concert needs to check out another great DVD called "Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session". This is a superb 1985 special that features Clapton rocking out like never before with Carl Perkins, George Harrison, and others. See my review for that DVD which I recommend even more than this one!
