Destined to remain the single most comprehensive record of Judy Garland's latter-day career, The Judy Garland Show Collection is an astonishing treasure of great lasting value. Preserving 14 complete episodes from Garland's rarely seen CBS-TV variety show from 1963-64, the set also offers a wealth of excerpts, outtakes, performances, and supplements packed onto all 8 sides of four DVDs. Of course Garland's established fans must have this set, which is handsomely boxed in a miniature show-biz trunk (to honor Judy's signature stage prop), and includes a paperback edition of Coyne Steven Sanders's definitive book about the show's one-season glory. Better still is the value this boxed set has for those who are unaware of Judy Garland's amazing talent beyond The Wizard of Oz. For anyone with only a cursory awareness of Garland's skill as an interpreter of great songs, this box will be a dynamic revelation.

Here, after all, is a mature performer at the peak of her song-styling craft, and The Judy Garland Show Collection gathers many of her finest performances. Side One of Disc One is "Just Judy"--28 songs that demonstrate Judy's amazing range and her penchant for melancholy, introspective tunes of loneliness and sorrow, brilliantly combined with such trademark showstoppers as "When You're Smiling" and "Keep Your Sunny Side Up." Elsewhere in the set, Judy shares the stage with such luminaries as Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Mickey Rooney, and many others, including her 17-year-old daughter Liza Minnelli, who was then on the cusp of her own stardom.

This was not the most stable time in Judy Garland's life, and she makes mistakes here and there--a show-biz great who'd falter occasionally, only to recover in grand style. But what's most evident is the sheer power of Judy Garland's talent, showcased by the finest musical and backstage talent that TV had to offer (including director Norman Jewison prior to his move to feature films). Watching this 15-hour compilation is a joyous reminder that a TV variety show, in the right hands, was the premier source of mainstream American entertainment. The Judy Garland Show had to struggle for ratings (it competed in the same time slot as NBC's popular series Bonanza), but this boxed set restores its timeless value. Pioneer has done a superlative job in presenting what is certainly one of the most impressive DVD packages ever produced. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars About Time.......2007-07-03

I too, have been waiting a long time for this. FYI, for the first reviewer, "Texas Refugee", you did a nice job with your review, but Judy and Mickey's first picture was "Love Finds Andy Hardy". I also second the reviewer who asks that the Hardy films need to be on DVD. Judy was only the best triple threat (dance, sing, act) in the history of the universe. Damn shame her mother got her hooked on pills

It's great that they're releasing the 4 Mickey/Judy "majors", but why not release the 4 lesser known ones too in this same set: (1)Throughbreds Don't Cry in 1937 was the first time Mickey and Judy appeared together on screen. (2&3)The 2 Andy Hardy movies: Andy Hardy Meets Debutante (1940) and Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941). Their earliest Andy Hardy pairing, Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) has previously been released on DVD. (4)Also both are in, but not paired together, in Thousands Cheer (1943) MGM's wartime musical with many of their contract players appearing as themselves. Their last pairing, Words and Music (1948), is being released on July 24 as part of the Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory, Vol. 2 box set.

5 out of 5 stars The really really big sheww.......2006-06-12

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

4 out of 5 stars Great Shows, Cumbersome Package.......2006-12-01

I'd give this set five stars if it had been packaged properly. There's no need to waste words here about how terrific these historical TV shows are, and I appreciate the efforts that went into making the entire series available in such stunning transfers on DVD. However, now that all of the shows have been restored, they ought to reconfigure this set (as has already been done with volume one of the complete collection). As cute an idea as the "trunk" package may seem, it is unwieldy and redundant in its contents. As at least one disc in the set demonstrates, four full episodes can easily be put on a single two-sided disc. So why is this set bulging with seven discs? Two discs contain three episodes each; another contains two; and another disc contains only one episode (The Christmas show). Even more wasteful, one disc is devoted to highlights of Judy with famous guests, and another contains a mere 17 minutes of music--four "Songs for America" culled from various shows. If a person is collecting the entire series (and you wouldn't be buying this package if you weren't), there is no need for separate "highlights" discs. Let's hope they get around to putting these legendary programs in a sensible format as they already have for volume 1, which originally also came in the bulky "trunk" format. Serious collectors, which such sets are obviously aimed at, don't have extra shelf space to waste on useless "extras."

5 out of 5 stars I've got it in the bank..........2006-01-31

Yes I do... I had to buy it twice so that I have it in the house as well. JUDY GARLAND 1962-1964 is the best Judy ..... Need I say more???? She remains a working experience.... she is true.... her soul is true.... her vulrability is true...

The human soul never changes... and that`s why JUDY GARLAND always will find fans worldwide.... I saw Liza live on October 19 2005 in Oslo. She was magnificent and we met briefly after the show... You can see a photo of us in my profile... How proud you would have been of her Judy.....

Bless you Judy... You gave us your talent AND a God-gifted daughter. THANK YOU:-)

5 out of 5 stars A GARLAND FAN BONZANA~AWESOME PERFORMANCES!!! .......2005-09-20

In 1962 the greatest musical introduction happened in my life when my loving older sis sat me down and played Judy At Carnegie Hall and life was not quite the same after...1963 came this great legend on television every Sunday night and I instantly fell in love and never missed a show and on Monday morning in High School Choir the first topic of discussion was always about Judy's tremendous and gorgeous voice, the songs that Judy sang the night before and who she did those incredible duets with which was a spectacular array of the whose who in the great musical world of the sixties such as Tony Bennett, Count Basie, Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Vic Damone, Jack Jones and on and on! I remember being awe struck as a teen watching this dynamo every Sunday night and being thrilled beyond belief...1965 opening night in the front row (I have the program and ticket stub to prove it!) at the Greek Theatre was sublime and this remains the greatest to this day that I have ever experienced and I have seen most of the greats over the past forty years. Anyone who experiences this wonderous box set will see what I mean as this is the closest that we can now get to the genius that was Judy Garland the Live Concert performer...and this set captures this brilliantly!!! Never in my lifetime did I think that I would have all the episodes of this incomparable series all beautifully remastered with such loving care but this second box set now completes this legendary series in the grand fashion that this classic musical series and this grand legend deserves. Glorious outtakes and stunning masterful unused performances fill out this collection and it is amazing to watch the incredibly moving series finale "Here's To Us" and realize that this amazing performance was not used...one watches transfixed as this soulful wonder goes to emotional depths unreached by other singers...this extraordinary performance is stunning beyond belief and quite possibly the greatest performance ever captured on film by any singer...certainly the most deeply moving. Aretha Franklin rates Judy as one of the greatest soul singers ever and watching this performance makes one know that Aretha knows what she is talking about. Judy Garland had a spectacular natural voice and was the greatest female popular singer plus peerless performer ever and this beautifully crafted box set clearly demonstrates this and is the next best thing to what it was like to experience Judy In Concert...there are a number of Concert Special Shows between these two magnificent box sets and they are the ultimate! Thank you Judy for working so hard and leaving us these two wonderous treasure chests of the best there is in the world of entertainment to savor and enjoy over and over again we do miss you alot...for always.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Entertainer In Her Many Moods.......2005-06-11

I must begin by saying that my love affair with Judy began, as it was the case with so many kids, with the annual showing of The Wizard of Oz. Thereafter, I'd catch her old movies on TV, frequently sneaking in a late show of Little Nellie Kelly or Presenting Lily Mars, or whatever, it was a wonderful treat for a little boy in one of the less fashionable parts of New Yawk. Judy lifted me, transported me into a better world, if only temporarily. I loved her voice, her style, her vulnerability. Now Streisand is a great talent, but vulnerable she ain't! Having said that, I must report that Judy is not at the top of her singing form in The Judy Garland Show, meticulously cleaned and sharpened in both picture and sound, after years in careless storage. When, then, was Judy in peak vocal power in her long musical career? The answer is her Carnegie Hall period. Unfortunately, she wasn't much to look at then, having packed on plenty of pounds with her favorite foods, particularly mashed potatoes and chocolate pies, plus wine. But it was this extra weight that protected her from the effects of her prescription drug addiction and nicotine habit. There was a certain sound between 1961 and 1962, when she was managed by her new lover, CMA's David Begelman, that she had not uttered before or afterward. It was rich, clear and under total control. It is in great evidence in her special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, originally titled The Judy Garland Show, but now often marketed on DVD as "Judy, Frank and Dean, Once in a Lifetime."
That lovely, exciting and rich voice is rarely in evidence on her series, but occasionally pops up in duets when she is competitive (with Streisand, Vic Damone, Ethel Merman) and in some solos (As Long as He Needs Me), but her startling weight loss, which lends itself to the high fashion of Ray Aghayan, was murder on her voice. Some may want to chop off my head, but I speaketh the truth: a steady diet of tea, Newport cigarettes and Ritalin do not promote good singing. There, I said it. Given that, she did the best she could with that diminished ability but still was a consummate comedienne, and a surprisingly lithe, limber dancer. There was a lot of backstage politicking at the time about second-rate guests being on the show, but there were plenty of first-rate talents, too, making a lovely time capsule of that period, the early '60s. I highly recommend the DVD set as an historical account of Judy and her special place in show business, and, in case anyone didn't know what all the fuss was about.

5 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold.......2004-07-15

There really are no words to express the genius of Judy Garland. With all of her emotional and financial problems (not to mention the horrible treatment she got from CBS), this supposedly "unreliable" woman sang her heart out week after week in what is indisputably the best musical series in the history of television. Every single show was like a special event. The shows produced by Bill Colleran are of course the best, because the "comedy sidekick" format was finally dropped and the focus was purely on the music. The 2 boxed sets, taken in their entirety, are an absolute must for any Garland fan. Most interesting to me were the out-takes (which show no indication of a temperamental, intoxicated diva), and the audio commentaries. Too bad there's no commentary from any of Judy's children, but I highly recommend the DVD of "Me and My Shadows: Life with Judy Garland" produced by Lorna Luft - she gives an excellent audio commentary on that DVD. Major Kudos to Pioneer Entertainment for a superb job on these 2 boxed sets - they are timeless treasures, and have gone a long way to satisfying my insatiable appetite for all things Garland.

5 out of 5 stars Judy Garland Show.......2007-05-18

If you love Judy Garland and it has been since you were very young, like I was, since you have seen these shows, this is a must have see. To see such a great talent at her best is a trip back in time, well worth taking again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-04-04

Others here have written beautifully about this treasure, so I'll just add that this is the first DVD that I ever purchased, on the same day that I bought my first DVD player, and that this collection was the only reason I bought a DVD player to begin with. It also was the first time I'd seen Judy Garland's 1963-64 TV series, and the first (of now many times) that I have read and referred to the really excellent and informative paperback book 'Rainbows End' written by Coyne Sanders which comes in this awesome DVD package.
Some 200 DVDs later in my collection, I'm happy that this is the one that got me started with collecting DVDs in the first place. I wish more box sets would include books and supplemental material so richly provided with this box set. It belongs in the home of every fan of Judy Garland and the guest performances are to behold- because of this show, I was introduced to Peggy Lee, Martha Raye, Vic Damone and other excellent musical talents I'd heard of, but basically had never seen perform.
It's a must-have :)

5 out of 5 stars Garland's Greatest Filmed Performance.......2006-11-23

My understanding of this program before I saw it was that it was a "failure," and should be seen only by unlimited Judy Garland fans. But when I finally saw it I saw a side of her I never realized. Here she is not artistically fettered by MGM, and more importantly this show is the main source of Judy's concert style of performance. People whose impression of Judy Garland is drawn from "For Me and My Gal" or "The Harvey Girls" may wonder why by the 1950's she was called Miss Show Business. This show gives us a glimpse.

It is far from perfect. It lacks structure, it meanders in poorly written jokes, and there are technical goofs galore (many which Garland capitalized upon with excellent timing to get a laugh out of the audience - especially involving cue cards). But where else in the world will you see Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, and Ethel Merman all singing together? It's not just the star power, but the actual performances themselves that will hold your attention and keep you thinking of them long after Jerry Van Dyke's comedy will be forgotten.

Judy had the burden of being a bigger legend than her guests, and dealt with it by being the central performer on the show. She sang, danced, and even did impersonations in a sketch with Jack Carter. I can't possibly tell if the emotions she puts in her songs are real or not, but what counts is that they -seem- real. More than any other performer, she broke hearts when she sang. Perhaps it's because she is seen by viewers who know how much of a tragedy her life was. I don't know. But these performances are greater than anything that will be seen in Judy's movies, even "A Star is Born," which may be the most profuse display of her talents on film. It's not enough to listen to a Judy Garland album -- she must be seen as well to be fully appreciated, and this collection is the best way to do that. She really was the World's Greatest Entertainer.

5 out of 5 stars We have Lift Off.......2006-02-27

Just wait until you see Judy sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic for the first time in the show. Her talent is supernatural. What else can I say. I have so far only bought the first box set and will soon buy the next. I wish that the shows could be packaged in complete running order. I would be prepared to buy the ones that I have already purchased again. Pure Heaven.

I am awestruck by this incredible collection. I wish more people could see this and know how great a performer Judy was(and still is in my opinion). The sound and visual are unbelievably mesmerizing! I've turned on others to the show who aren't devoted fans, as I am, and they are impressed to no end! If only they could have given the great Garland more seasons! You just love her all over again!
As a small child, I remember watching this show with the entire family. It was great then, but not like this! Incredible!
