Amazon.com essential video

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD.

The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon

My daughter used this as part of an oral report on Woodstock, she got a 95%

2 out of 5 stars eh.......2007-06-10

i expected more from this dvd. was not an enjoyable watch, but i may give it another chance someday

5 out of 5 stars Great content, lousy DVD production.......2007-06-10

Great time capsule of a great era; highly recommend it. It's a shame the studio DVD production is up to par! The content is a 5, the DVD production is a 2. Much more could have been presented.

3 out of 5 stars Either the end or the beginning of a dream..........2007-05-07

My kids gave me this, probably to stop me binding on about the old days, and it is intresting to see some of this about 37 years after I first saw it on the big screen in Edinburgh.

Something that you don't realise from early cuts is just how lamentable some the the bands were - no wonder it was so swingingly edited. Jefferson Airplane are beyond awful, and Canned Heat are quite dire - I don't know what Henry Vestine was on but his guitar is out of time, out of tune and out of it completely. Some acts managed to get it together, such as the Who, Santana, and even Country Joe and the Fish (nice, if out of tune, guitar from Barry Melton) and it is easy to see why dear old Alvin Lee in 10 Years After was such a hit - coming from a country that boasted Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page, Kim Simmons, Mick Green and many others, it was the norm to be very good and to play very well. Excellence was expected and the British Blues Scene led the world. Muddy, BB King and many others have paid tribute to the Stones, the Beatles, Clapton, Green and all the others for making sure that anybody who isn't from the planet Zark knows who Robert Johnson is.

If you had to sum the whole thing up, I suppose that the performances by CSN and Ritchie Havens sum it up pretty well musically - lots of flailing at acoustic guitars and sweet vocals. And Hendrix ... well, Hendrix. I blow very hot and cold about Sir Jimi, and I am cold about this performance too. Thank goodness somebody else has had the courage to say that he was not actually that good. In 1968, at the Woburn Abbey Festival, I saw a dreadful performance from Hendrix, and I mean dreadful, when he was completely upstaged by a 20-year-old Rory Gallagher with a primitive version of Taste. And here they are again, a year after Woodstock, at the Isle of Wight Festival, and those who were there told me at the time that the absolute show-stoppers were Procol Harum (don't laugh - they had Robin Trower, BJ Wilson and Gary Brooker)and ... Rory Gallagher with Taste. Luckily we have "Taste At The Isle Of Wight" available so you can judge for yourselves..... but that great Deceiver, Memory, has put Saint Jimi forward as the star of the IOW show.

Anyway, as a social document it is fascinating, lots of Peace and Love and rolling in the mud. But like all dreams it had to stop, and what this self-contained village (supported by food drops and an army of social and medical volunteers) left behind was a bloody awful mess, an emerging account of some very threatening back-stage scenes and an acreage "ankle deep in human s***", as one American (called Berry - where else?) who was there told me. It reminds me of the Travellers, who want to be "left alone" and not "victimised" - as long as some silly bu**er in full-time work is prepared to pick up the tab, hand over the dole, pay for the schooling, pay for the medical needs, pay for everything in fact. I know that's a bit cynical, because there really was a soft feeling to the 60s and early 70s, but there was also a buzz of anger and violence. Perhaps you had to live through Nixon, Vietnam and the Hell's Angels to really get the point of Woodstock. Perhaps not.

Buy? Yes, I guess so, because there are good parts musically and socially, and it surely won't happen again. But FF the dreadful bands - there's a lot of them, too - almost all from the U S of A.

4 out of 5 stars TO BE YOUNG WAS VERY HEAVEN.......2007-03-23

Harmless nostalgia. Those should be the first words that anyone old enough to have been able to be there or who was actually there should shout after seeing this updated version of the Woodstock Festival of 1969. The second thought should be- did we really dress (or undress), act and talk that way? It is almost like coming out of a time machine. I do not think that today's youth with their worries about getting into good colleges, making money and being members in good standing on the information `superhighway' would get the point of many of the interviews with the young of my generation, the generation of `68.

Enough said on that, though. The real point of the film and the reason for taking the time to watch it is the music. (It is the music, man!) At one time many of us thought that music and the counter culture that would evolve from it was the revolution. Well, life itself proved the folly of that idea, however, some of the music presented here still is worth listening to. Some of it, however, also sounds and feels very dated like we used to think about the music of the early 1950's. There are several highlights here. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, obviously. The Jefferson Airplane and Carlos Santana, surprisingly. And, if one performance defined the whole festival and what music was all about in the summer of 1969 in the lives of those who were young `hippies' or `politicos' then it is Jimi Hendricks. If man and musical instrument ever acted in total unison it was in this performance. Watch it.

Billed as "the day music changed history," the Live Aid concerts of July 13, 1985, were held to raise money to fight the horrifying famines sweeping Africa. The brainchild of Bob Geldof and representing the efforts of countless musicians and technicians, Live Aid was a genuine and inspiring effort to help the victims of an overwhelming calamity. Twenty years after the twin concerts (one in London, one in Philadelphia) were broadcast worldwide, the 4-DVD treatment furthers the cause, with proceeds going toward the Band Aid Trust.

The DVD set opens with a heartbreaking documentary on the crisis, followed by videos of the two hit songs that represented the collaborative nature of Geldof's efforts—Band Aid' s "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World." Since Live Aid was never intended to be released in a recorded format, preservation of TV footage has been unreliable, resulting in some glaring omissions. Led Zeppelin's semi-reunion doesn't appear, and neither does a legendary session with Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, and Keith Richards. Some sets by performers who were popular at the time may inspire either nostalgic glee or head-scratching (Kiki Dee fans, you know who you are). Sprinkled amid these performances are a couple real gems, including a performance by Run DMC, the event's sole representative of the ascendant rap movement. Much of the music here was a passing fad, but the sentiment that brought it all together is timeless. -- Ryan Boudinot

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Moment In Time..........2007-06-05

Perhaps I'm being too generous by giving the LIVE AID dvd set 5-stars. As another reviewer pointed out, many performances are left off of this set. However, some of the biggest acts of the 80s are shown performing their monster hits with the exception of TINA TURNER, WHAM, and THE THOMPSON TWINS. Although these performers do appear with other singers/musicians, the footage of them performing their hits was either destroyed or lost. I'm sure there might be other examples of groups/singers who appear on the LIVE AID dvds and they're not performing their big hits, but, as far as I can tell, most of them are.

The fact that there's even a dvd set available is a miracle in itself.

A booklet that comes with the dvd set explains the idea behind LIVE AID and how BOB GELDOF (singer of THE BOOMTOWN RATS) saw a BBC News report on television in 1984 (the news footage is included at the start of dvd #1) about the famine going on in Africa/Ethiopia. He wanted to do something about it and formed BAND AID in the UK. This in turn formed U.S.A FOR AFRICA in the US, which ultimately led to the LIVE AID concert which happened on July 13, 1985. The concert was filmed by MTV, ABC and the BBC, and aired on its respective channel with an estimated 1.5 billion viewers around the world.

According to the dvd's producer, Jill Sinclair, Geldof wanted the concert to be shown only once and not recorded. ABC took Geldof at his word and destroyed the footage so it could never be re-broadcast again. The BBC ignored him but lost some of the footage, while the videos that weren't lost, sat collecting dust. MTV found over 100 tapes of b-roll of the concert and so Sinclair, and the rest of the LIVE AID dvd team, combined MTV's footage of the LIVE AID concert, with the remaining BBC footage and that's how we get this remarkable 4-dvd set! So bravo to Jill Sinclair and the dvd team.

The concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The dvds go back and forth from Wembley to JFK, but transitions smoothly, so there aren't any jarring cuts in between the musical acts. Considering that this concert was recorded using analog equipment and was meant for a one-time only showing, the footage itself has been restored as best as it could be and it looks pretty good (sharp, vibrant color, etc.). There are some instances where wavy-horizontal lines appear on close-up shots on some of the performances, and Sinclair explains in the booklet that this is a phenomenon called "microphany," which happens when the "camera lens is affected by great volume." The lines aren't that distracting since they aren't colored, and they don't distort the picture, but they're just noticeable. It only happens once in a while and according to the booklet, only on some UK performances.

Along with the performances, the LIVE AID dvd set also includes extras:

DVD #1
**BBC TV NEWS REPORT
**BAND AID - DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS - music video
**U.S.A FOR AFRICA - WE ARE THE WORLD - "..."

DVD #4-(includes performances recorded at different locations/times and either broadcast that day or never televised)

**INXS - What You Need; Don't Change
**B.B. KING - Why I Sing The Blues; Don't Answer The Door; Rock Me Baby
**ASHFORD & SIMPSON with TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Reach Out And Touch(Somebody's Hand)
**RUN DMC - King Of Rock
**CLIFF RICHARD - A World Of Difference
**DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER - Dancing In The Streets (this is actually the music video; according to wikipedia Bowie and Jagger were supposed to do a live duet on the song, with Bowie in London and Jagger in Philadelphia, but because of technical difficulties it couldn't be done)
**DOCUMENTARY - Food And Trucks And Rock 'n' Roll

Instead of a scene selection menu, the dvds have "search by artist" that lets you go right to the start of that performer's set (which will then play the rest of the concert from that point on, rather than going back to the menu). You also have the option to just play the Wembley performances or the Philadelphia perfomances.

If you're too young to remember this concert, you might miss the significance of it. But it's still worth watching. Like Woodstock was to a generation before it, LIVE AID showed the world that young people could come together, through music, and collectively believe in something that could change the world. If you do remember this moment in time, watching this concert will bring back many memories.

Some of the stand out performances on these dvds, IMO:

FREDDIE MERCURY/QUEEN - The rapport between the audience and Mercury is incredible. He launches into an impromptu "scat" singing certain vowels to the audience and they sing it back to him, verbatim

ELTON JOHN & GEORGE MICHAEL - John playing the piano, while Michael belts out John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

PATTI LABELLE - The soul diva belting out her version of Lennon's "Imagine" and then going into "Forever Young." Towards the end of the latter song, she puts down the microphone, walking up to the front of the stage and continues singing...and you can still hear her voice, barely audible, but powerful enough to be heard over the cheering crowd and the back-up singers

TINA TURNER & MICK JAGGER - duet on "State Of Shock" Turner matches Jagger move for move and lip for lip

So even though this set is not complete, it still deserves 5-stars.

4 out of 5 stars Live Hair.......2007-05-14

I was not lucky enough to see the concert when it happened, but am glad to be able to now. The music is great, but it's fun to see the hair styles - mullet city! My daughter and I think Queen steals the show!

4 out of 5 stars First Live Aid.......2007-03-24

My family and I watched the first live aid on TV. We we're a bit shocked to see that Robert Page of Led Zeppelin was not included on the 4 disk set.

5 out of 5 stars So many recollections !.......2007-02-16

I was a teenager when the show was in the air and I could only record four hours on a VHS tape.

Now ten hours on DVD !

OK, it was originally a sixteen hours live but it's so good to watch this twenty years after. Madonna was a young singer, Freddy Mercury was there, etc...

So many recollections !

5 out of 5 stars Met Stephen Stills in Whistler back in the 80's!!.......2007-02-20

My moment with Mr. Stills was when I gave him a ride in my taxi in the late 80's in Whistler when he came up to play at Buffalo Bill's. It was some thing to do with a benefit of some sort. Anyway, I had been a fan of his for many, many years and I was taken completely by surprise when he got in the back seat of my cab. He was a complete gentleman and genuine person. He was exactly as I thought he would be. I wish him and his bandmates nothing but the very best from here on in. Carry on!!

2 out of 5 stars Strat Daddy.......2007-01-29

I was disappointed, The audio quality was poor and the instrumentation sparse. I am a fan of Crosby, Stills and Nash, but this is not one of their better performances.

5 out of 5 stars bare essentials are best.......2006-10-01

I dare any group of musicians today to attempt to replicate the musicianship displayed in this concert. With the barest of essentials CSN prove they are still masters of the medium. Truly an exceptional concert not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars an astounding and truly moving performance.......2006-06-14

I saw these guys in Melbourne Australia about 15 years ago. Seeing this performance left me once again mesmerised and emotionally moved. I mean - WOW !!!! (with a mega-capital "W").
No words are capable of describing this performance. I'm very lucky to have a home theatre system comprising of a 5.1 NAD receiver, 2 front & 2 back B&W speakers, 1 B&W center, 1 Wharfedale 10" sub. I was back again in the front seat watching my very own private CSN concert!!!
If you don't have this concert, don't just sit there - rush out and buy it!!!!

2 out of 5 stars CS&N Acoustic.......2006-02-24

I was fortunate to be able to see a live preformance in my home town about 12 years ago. I don't beleive that this effort is "up to par".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Early Christmas.......2006-12-08

Santa sent me this 3-DVD set in the mail. Did I wait until Xmas to open it? HA! I just finished watching all three discs, straight through.

The word is perfect.

I can imagine no improvement. An acoustic concert, an electric concert, and a career retrospective, all brilliant. Perfect. It's as if CSN had answered prayers I never coherently formed. At no time does it become even faintly repetitive, because every song is different, every time: those guys always add something new, usually something surprising that then seems inevitable in retrospect.

Rhino did a really first-rate job of packaging and presentation, too. The discs are clearly related, a set, but they're not wearing uniforms. Great covers and liner notes on all three. Painless DVD menu process...and I love the defacing of J. Edgar in the opening FBI Warning sequence. Terrific video and audio throughout. A class act all the way.

Robert Heinlein once said some things are just perfection of their kind, and the only possible improvement is a whole new design approach. The examples he gave were the M-1 carbine and the Goony Bird airplane. This DVD set is another one.

Mind you, I still want a Crosby-Nash DVD titled LAY ME DOWN, featuring James Raymond, and a CPR live concert DVD, and a CSNY FREEDOM OF SPEECH `06 DVD...and I want `em real bad. But this will hold me over.

4 out of 5 stars Pity Rhino just doesn't offer the third as stand alone.......2004-11-05

ACCOUSTIC and DAYLIGHT were terrific documents, and so I agree with art here that it's a bit redundant to offer them again without the option to purchase the third by itself. However, if you don't have the other two, buy this! The third historical overview is very good and includes some footage of Moe, Larry & Curly playing with the Ontario Shemp on "Down By The River" that indicates they could on occasion produce music as a quartet. I
The historical footage traces the early days of the three of them well and helps bolster the notion that Nash at one point was really a major catalyst to the effort. Always though, Crosby is the one who rivets your attention. From the start, he was the creative genius, the one in the group who cast aside the ropes and flew far too close to the sun. Yet had he not, the power of his music and observations would not ring with the accuracy that they do today.
What's really missing is Ol Shakey's JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST. I have never figured out why he thinks he is exercising meticulous artistic integrity, but then I was born in Ottawa. They get loopier as you go West. JOURNEY would round out the nascent period in the lives of these four, at least up to the mid-70's.
As a package, get it if you don't have the other 2. Otherwise wait, Rhino is sure to issue the third sooner or later.

3 out of 5 stars disregard for consumers.......2004-10-21

acoustic & daylight again were released earlier this year, so rhino should have issued long time commin as a seperate dvd. i'm not going to rebuy this box just for that even though im a big csn fan.

5 out of 5 stars CSN behind the scenes and raw.......2007-01-20

This is a great DVD. It's not a concert but has footage from the very early years of CSN all the way into the 90's. From woodstock to the Dick Cavett show to vintage home studio footage, you really feel like you know these guys better after watching this video. My favorite music DVD by far.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty cool visual representation of CSN.......2006-08-19

"Long Time Comin'" is a 1990 documentary summing up the first 20 years of Crosby Stills and Nash that was re-issued on DVD in 2004. What makes it different from most documentaries is that it simply tells the band's story through their music and some interview snippets, without any narration -- which is also probably its strength, as very few bands have been able to produce such powerful music.

What you do get is a nicely flowing compilation of TV appearances, previously unseen footage like a "lost" performance of "Marrakesh Express" from the Woodstock concert and clips from live shows, especially a 1977 gig at The Summit in Houston and a 1982 show at the Universal Amphitheatre in LA that one would love to see more of.

Among the TV appearances are clips from "The Tom Jones Show", "Smother Brothers" and "Dick Cavett Show", which features David Crosby and Stephens Still fresh from their gig at Woodstock joining a studio audience including Grace Slick and Joni Mitchell. Stills even shows off his mud-stained jeans before launching into a solo version of "4+20".

Neil Young pops up on a few clips, including "You Don't Have To Cry" and "Down By The River", but doesn't feature in the interview clips, which have the three proponents just talking about their music, inspirations and their outlook on various issues. As Graham Nash puts it at one point, their have been other bands with three-part harmonies, but something about the voices of the three man makes their music unique.

The sound quality on the 5.1 track ranges from tinny (on the Dick Cavett clip) to gorgeous (on "Long Time Gone" and "Wooden Ships" taken from the 1977 show). But the quality of the sound notwithstanding, this DVD is all about the performances.

Despite the lack of narration, the film also gives insights into the sometimes turbulent relations between the three men, with one clip capturing an angry Stills telling off Crosby for his ways!!

The video, however, doesn't seem to have been cleaned and appears very, very soft for most of the time. A little remastering could have helped. Also the fact that it ends in 1989 means there is little about the band in the period after that.

If you're a hard-core CSN fan, this is a must buy. Otherwise, just rent it for a few spins.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2005-12-30

I bought this DVD with great anticipation and came away very disappointed. The two tracks that I wanted to view the most were For "What It's Worth" and "Down By The River". Both tracks were cut up by interviews. I haven't found "Down By The River" anywhere on DVD and thought I finally had found this great song. When a DVD is made about a groups history it would be nice if all the complete songs were included. I had the same bad experience with an ABBA DVD I recently purchased. Some of the music was great but again you would think that the interviews could be placed on the DVD after the song was over

5 out of 5 stars the CSN owner's manual.......2005-07-04

The nice thing about this 1990 VHS recording (now being offered on DVD) is the absence of narration. All you are getting is all you probably want... live footage of Crosby, Stills and Nash in the studio, on stage, and in sound bites culled from interviews. The music and the performers tell their own story. Here's how it all breaks down:

Of the twenty tracks listed, there are eleven complete performances. `Long Time Gone' opens the tape, live from their 1977 tour. This track includes some archival shots of the artists from performances not featured on the rest of the tape, and the credits are rolled over it as well. An acoustic `Marrakesh Express' follows from the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Next up is an interview/performance with Stephen and David from The Dick Cavett Show in 1969. Joni Mitchell and others are present as Stephen debuts `4+20' with a miscue in the opening verses (no one notices though as `Deja vu' was yet to be released). Later in the tape we have `Helplessly Hoping' and `Teach Your Children', two pristine studio performances sans audience. Further into the tape we have more tracks from the 1977 tour, `Wooden Ships', `To The Last Whale: Critical Mass and Wind On the Water' complete with the large screen video footage of dolphins and whales that supplemented the stage presentation on the tour, `Just a Song Before I Go', `Dark Star' and `Wasted On the Way'. `Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' can also be considered a complete track, two-thirds of the song drawn from the 1969 Woodstock Festival, spliced together with one-third of the 1989 Bridge School performance. The best track is the intense `Dark Star', which at one point transforms Stills into a lead-guitarist-whirling-dervish, and the two studio tracks. All of these recordings are of excellent sound and video quality. Stephen introduces `Wasted On the Way' as an autobiographical song about the band, and the Bridge School (run by Neil Young's wife, Pegi), benefit performance, though quite inspired, reveals that both Stills and Crosby had ascended to a critical mass of poundage by the late 1980's.

There are a number of fine tracks that are incomplete. Among them are The Byrds lip-synching a black and white `Mr. Tambourine Man' on the Hollywood A-Go-Go television show from 1966, an excellent live `Carrie-Anne' from The Hollies on The Smother's Brother's Show in 1967, and the classic `For What It's Worth' from Buffalo Springfield, also from The Smother's Brothers in 1967. The Tom Jones Show kicks in a visually and audibly beautiful `You Don't Have To Cry' from 1970, with Dallas Taylor on drums, Greg Reeves on an upright bass, and Neil Young adding a second acoustic guitar, but no vocals. The intro is cut from Neil's `Down By the River', performed by CSN&Y in 1970 for The Music Scene television series. Perhaps there were some copyright issues with showing these television performances in their entirety, but the 'Cavett' performance somehow made it. Aside from the hokey Byrds track, fans will certainly want complete copies of the other performances.

There are also snippets from various sources that really don't deserve to be credited as featured songs, most of them running less than a half minute. We have a home recording of Stephen performing `Black Queen', probably the lowest quality recording on the entire tape, but there is no questioning its historic value. There is a recording studio segment featuring `Find the Cost Of Freedom', and the tape concludes with a portion of `Carry On', the officially released version, playing while the credits roll.

As noted the tape also features interviews with the band members (and one brief segment with Joni Mitchell) discussing their origins as a band, their conflicts, their thoughts on composing socially relevant music, and their personal integrity as artists. Obviously if you are a fan of the band this tape is precious. You simply cannot obtain such a diverse selection of material from the three decades this tape traverses anywhere else. The only drawback is that so many of the tracks are not presented in their entirety. The tape will undoubtedly leave fans wanting more from the vault of studio performances and concert recordings. It would only make sense to release the available material as the CSN fan base is aging out. Remember, producers... fans can't buy a DVD from their grave, at least not given the limits of today's technology.

4 out of 5 stars Flashes of "Golden CSN Age".......2005-04-01

If you think of CSN&Y as the "unfulfilled American Beatles" you'd want this to see this DVD of the boys in their early 70's youthful and creative vigor. Sadly, the performances also include 80's performances including a glassy-eyed-catatonic and very drugged drenched David Crosby.

Read the group's authorized bio "Crosby, Stills & Nash" (St Martin's Press) by Dave Zimmer and Henry Diltz and get background about each song while watching. The 1969 mystery of why Tom Jones is singing lead on "Long Time Gone" in a TV performance with the band is revealed that David Crosby was still grieving over the automobile death of girlfriend Christine Hinton. Many more great tidbits about how "Long Time Gone", "Teach Your Children", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", and other classic songs came to be will enhance your listening pleasure.

This snapshot DVD doesn't "sugar coat" the volitility of young talented egos on the rise. Stills summed it up (sic): "(we were) 23 years old with more money than you can imagine and incredable adolation will do a number on your head". At its worse, it's a "Vh-1" docudrama of the rise-fall-redemption that the entertainment industry cranks out so regularly. However, as Crosby and Nash always sums it up, "It's about the music man" which is undeniably brilliant and stands the test of time that makes this fun to watch.

Ultimately, CS&N is about friendship, art, and people trying to grow up and be decent and true to loved ones and themselves. Sometimes the process isn't pretty but we have the benefit of the music as the soundtrack of their lives and the era.

I've seen clips of early 70's CSN&Y performing "Ohio" in an indoor venue (Fillmore East?) and would love to see more from it. Is it from Neil's Journey Through the Past movie? Seeing them performing in their glorious ascent period that the live "Four Way Street" album only hints at would be the ultimate video by this band. (Anyone in the CSN&Y clan listening?)

I've seen the other two recently released CS&N DVD's but they capture them in the 80's and they comes across more as nostalgia. Seeing them as middle aged musical professionals performing their "classic" songs is like looking at pictures of someone in midlife. However, "Long Time Comin'" shows glimpses of them when their music was fresh, viberant, full of youthful energy (at least most of the performances culled from late 60's-early 70's do), and ready to change the world. Those early career performances alone make this DVD worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars More Like Stills and Nash in Concert.......2007-03-13

CSN came to the Los Angeles in 1983 in support of their Daylight Again album. The concer featured selections from their first 15 years of touring. Playing a powerhouse set that included material from the Woodstock years to Daylight Again this should have been a defining moment for the band. It was a great show for Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. David Crosby was catatonic throughout the show fighting his own personal demons rather than performing as a member of the band. Stills carried the show with his intense guitar playing and Nash's singing while not perfect was adequate for the occassion.

This is a stripped down disc that features no extras. The highlights include: Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Southern Cross, For What its Worth, Long Time Gone and Teach Your Children.

5 out of 5 stars Where The Hell Is "Southern Cross" On The DVD.......2006-03-10

If it's true it's not on the DVD as the song selection seems to indicate than someone dropped the ball. One of Still's best compositions and it didn't make the cut??? Something is rotten in Denmark. Otherwise, great songs. I saw this concert on "On TV" in the early eighties and it was awesome, despite the zombied out performance of Crosby. But no "Southern Cross"??? Arghhhh!!!! FIX THIS ERROR!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Daylight Again.......2006-03-04

I love Crosby, Stills and Nash,. I bought this DVD the same day I bought Santana's new DVD, Live By Request (Great DVD by the way), and as hard as it is for me to say this, but this DVD was a letdown. Crosby, Stills, and Nash are known for their 60s, and somewhat "hippie" sound, but the songs on this DVD have an 80s style to it. "Just A Song Before I Go"was a good performance, but the rest of the songs made me say "what happened Stills?". The biggest letdown of them all was "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", my favorite CSN song. The song lost it's 60s aggresive folk sound, and gained a more adult contempory sound. It was hard to hear after hearing the aggresive woodstock version. Not only was it hard on the ears, it's just plain akward to watch. Stephen Stills looks like you would expect, but David Crosby, who was obviously having a drug problem, just stands in front of the microphone, no guitar, and just sings without moving a muscle. Graham Nash on the other hand, is unusually hyper, and dresses kind of, well, "girly". But even though Stills does a good solo on this song, it takes a turn for the worst when they turn the famous ending, (Do do do di di, dit do do do di di) into a horrible 80s sound. By this time, I ejected the disk and watched my Santana DVD. It's nice to see someone from the 60s who can still rock like he used to. Sorry CSN, but you were a 60s band, so you should sound like one.

4 out of 5 stars Much Better Concert DVD Than Critiqued By Many.......2006-01-22

Because of the largely negative reviews from many reviewers at Amazon, I actually avoided purchasing this for over 2 years. However, after getting it for just $12 on sale, I couldn't resist, and I'm so glad I finally resisted to temptation and my own better judgement. Sure, the concert and this tour was perhaps the low point in Crosby's career, and he had very little voice (and looked awful). However, that just about wraps up the only thing negative about this DVD.

I have well over 70 concert DVDs and an excellent surround sound system, and I would rate this concert well within the top quartile. For starters, the 5.1 surround sound audio is outstanding. Second, you will rarely find a CSN set list so comprehensive, top notch and extensive...21 songs spanning 110 minutes and covering their entire catalogue...Of the 21 songs, at most 3 could be considered "fillers", and the rest are all amongst their classics-- including somewhat rare performances of Chicago, You Don't Have To Cry, and the Beatles' Blackbird, the latter two done accoustically with just Stills' career-best guitar work. Third, though David Crosby was hurting, Stephen Still has never been better in concert-- both in voice and in musicianship (he lost his voice soon after), and Graham Nash (though bouncing around as if he was on greenies) was top notch, as well.

Net, net-- I'd fully recommend this concert DVD to any CSN fan-- avid or casual in nature. It's a perfect compliment to the early 1990s recorded Accoustic Concert DVD, as in that one, both Crosby and Nash bring their "A games", whereas Stills has by that time lost his clear voice (though his guitar work was also excellent in that one).

5 out of 5 stars Loved it Big Time.......2005-10-05

Watch it.
