Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.
Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.
Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

zeppelin lives.......2007-06-23
I am so glad I purchased this. The performances are absolutely amazing! This is all about the music - the best of the best. I only wish I were able to be there when they took place.
Excellent dvd set. A must have!
Why Led Zeppelin's music is CLASSIC.......2007-06-22
I was, am, and always shall BE mesmerized by this DVD complilation. It's a journey through the 70s, and it brought back a lot of great childhood memories as I watched Robert Plant prance on stage and Jimmy Page play like he was on fire. Which he was. But what sets Zeppelin apart from today's musical bands is simple: They didn't write or perform social/political commetary in a time filled with anti-war sentiment and civil injustices. Zeppelin saved that for Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie- just to name a few. This was genius on Zeppelin's part and that's why Zeppelin will always be a classic rock band. Their songs are in no way dated the way other bands' songs from the 70s are. Oh sure, their clothes are dated on this DVD- check out Jimmy Page's hand-sewn astrology symbols on his pants- but their music will outlive any of us, all of us- and thank Zeppelin for that.
Simply Stunning.......2007-06-13
I am sure the details have all been listed-so I will say this: Get some nice headphones that accent the bass, and enjoy this fantastic collection.
Thank god, "the suits" that ran these boys, coughed up the money, time and energy to get the band on 16mm film. The collection of clips and interviews add to the treasures. This is the power music, that Hendrix and Cream started, but couldn't maintain. Indeed, LZ couldn't maintain it-so the early video when they were raw and hungry-and not yet drugged to numbness-is a real treat!
Also the film/sound technology was just changing in the 60's to capture the music of 60's and early 70's. What a pity, we don't have more color celluloid and 1/4 audio sync tape of Cream, Jimi, the Beatles, Motown.
With the advent of high speed Kodak 16mm film, pilotone synched Nagra 1/4" tape recorders, Eclair NPR 16mm handheld cameras, along with the competing Arriflexes from Germany, sync cables, good labs, good mics, transfers and mixes all to end up in its own personal joy, on your DVD platter.
This is music that sounds GOOD loud and rich. So rather than terrify your neighbors-get some headphones with a good bass sound, and crank it.
I heard on a radio talk show, that Plant really thought the early Live at the Royal Albert Hall performance-captured the band at a good musical stage. (considering the sloppy drugged-out future and ultimate demise)
I also heard that US Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, has studied classical music, and in the morning she enjoys listening to Led Zepellin and Cream. I think Condi, would enjoy this DVD. Bluesy Les Paul solos added with jazz improv free form lead guitar especially on the live slow blues tracks; hard driving rock; eclectic Persian and World music motifs-Classical Bach themes, abit of Celtic folk-traditional themes: it is all electrified and in good form with a lyrical, passionate lead singer who is man enough to get out of the way at times and let the players-have some fun on their own. Long overdue-grab it now!
led zep.......2007-05-14
great concert footage and sound covering various stages of the band. a must for zepplin fans.
Newbury Comics is Top 3 Shipper/Service Ever! Dvd is.........2007-05-13
I thought, a very moving look at the band through Page's eyes and heart.
KIller end of concert "filler" tv shows in Europe. Wow! Don't miss the last footage from 79' where Plant and Page are strangers on stage; you can actually feel the tension as they perform (Plant left at end of this tour).
Having played frisbee with Plant and JP on a Malibu beach in 73', I was moved by the sincerity Page reveals (if you look!)

For Led Zeppelin fanatics, this 1976 feature The Song Remains the Same is a treasure of searing live performances, particularly welcome in light of the sad scarcity of such visual material from the band's great decade. Despite the group's road weariness after a long tour, their final, three-night stand at Madison Square Garden in 1973 was full of the old power. Performances of "No Quarter," "Whole Lotta Love," "Black Dog," "Dazed and Confused," and "Stairway to Heaven" underscore Zep's charisma. Trouble is, you don't get an unbroken performance here. Viewers have to wade through a mishmash of documentary insight into the lives of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, as well as fantasy sequences supposedly inspired by the thoughts and fantasies of the band's individual members. It's mostly garish and silly, but there are some nice elements, especially insights into the late Bonham's life. The DVD doesn't offer much in the way of add-ons (a theatrical trailer is about it), but there is also enhanced viewing for 16 x 9 televisions. --Tom Keogh

Pure Zeppelin.......2007-05-07
I am biased because i love Zeppelin and have done for over 30 years but Song Remains the Same is just a fantastic insight into the band and an awesome display of live music. Not many bands sound better live than their studio albums but Zeppelin pull it off, from Plants awesome vocals to Pages screaming guitar this album just blows you away!
A product of its time..........2007-04-03
In some ways this film was rendered obsolete by the 2003 Led Zeppelin 2-disc dvd set, in terms of Led Zeppelin live on video. Shot at the end of the 1973 Houses of the Holy US Tour over several nights in Madison Square Garden, the Song Remains The Same had been shelved for a few years and only managed to get released when lead singer Robert Plant's car accident sidelined the band for a year. The concert footage finds the band a bit spaced out and exhausted at times in terms of the performances (although I suppose buggering daft teenage runaways and consuming vast quantities of booze, coke and smack will tend to do that to you); a nearly half-hour version of Dazed and Confused becomes particularly pondersome about 7 minutes in. Combined with the live footage were fantasy concept sequences, most of which appear to have been directed by 1st year film school students tripping on mescaline. Only John Bonhams really works well. Still, it is an unapologetic display of the debauchery, confidence and mystery that Zeppelin evoked at the time - just not really some of the band's best performances.

The Song Remanis the Same DVD - Super DVD - it Rocks!
Fascinating...In its way.......2006-11-28
What can you say about THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME--or Led Zeppelin for that matter--some 30 years after the film's release? Everybody pretty much knows where he (or she, but let's be honest, we're mostly talking 'he's' here) stands on all things Zep. For those who never saw the band live (like me), it certainly gives you a taste of what that experience was like. But then, I'm told that the DVD more recently compiled by Jimmy Page did a better job at that.
But still, this performance film/cum documentary/cum pre-MTV video fest captures an era in the group's history and our own in its own unique fashion. I was never an ueber-fan, so maybe it's not really for me to say, but I, for one, did not come away from this film feeling too disappointed.
Some maintain that SONG really would have been much better had it simply been a performance film, with no pretensions. But actually, there have been VERY few pure performance docs historically. Even the best concert films (THE LAST WALTZ,say) usually throw in a least a few documentary elements, a la WOODSTOCK. And it can give the viewer a better sense of place (here NYC) and time (1973). The documentary elements give some flavor of the rock'n'roll life as it was lived by both musicians AND fans. And it does so more by presenting random clips of backstage life than by interviews. It speaks volumes to me that in one scene, security is letting a couple of kids sneak backstage with a proverbial nod and a wink, and in another, someone--who may have been a little drunker, more high or otherwise more disorderly--is being chased down like a (black)dog.
And all those shots of the NYC skyline in 1973 register in a very strange way in these post-9/11 times. Those towers were pretty new back then.
As for the much reviled "fantasy" sequences. Well, I admit, I'd probably prefer to see more live sequences myself. But they really do serve as a precursor to the video-era (and you'll recall that the first videos weren't exactly big budget spectaculars either, so having Robert Plant in medieval garb ride around on horseback for a couple of minutes or having Jimmy Page scaling a mysterious mountain, only to meet up with a mysterious warlock (who looks, again mysteriously, like his own bad self) is scarcely any sillier than what was being broadcast 24 hours a day on "Music Television" a few years later. As a bridge between psychedelia and the MTV era, THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is an invaluable document.
Besides would a full length performance film really have been everything some fans seem to imagine it could have been? I don't think so. At some point, I concluded that the cinematographer must have had a mad crush on Robert Plant. The shots of his, uh, torso were getting a little monotonous. And poor John Paul Jones is all but ignored in the live shots. He gets a few moments where he's fingering the fretboard, before the camera action is once again lovingly diverted back to Page and Plant. Well, they were the showmen after all. And this was quite the show.
For good or ill, depending on your point of view. At the time, as I recall, I was just purist enough to think that I could have done with less 'show' and more of the musicianship I knew the group was capable of. But looking at the film in 2006, I'm more "que era, era." It was what it was. And it's worth a look.
Hutch's Led Zep movie review.......2006-11-12
The Song Remains The Same is Led Zep at their early (1973) in concert best. For those of us that were lucky enough to see the band in concert, this is as close as we can get to revisiting that magicial time! For everyone this lets us see why Led Zep was one of the few greatest bands of all time!! The music and the performance here proves that!!

A Rare Treat......and a Few Flaws.......2006-12-27
The other reviews are dead-on in their comments on the relative merits of Beck vs. Page abilities; and its pretty obvious that it was a strain to their egos to get them both on the same stage. Jeff Beck and Steve Winwood DVDs are hard to find, so if you're fan of either (even for the few songs) it's worth the price. Eric Clapton gives a great performance but the sound mix leaves you straining to catch his guitar above the other instruments. Another annoyance was the "third drummer" who mugged shamelessly and whaled on every piece of percussion - tambourine, cow bell, gong, drum rim shots, etc. - Eric, Charlie Watts and Kenney Jones can all be seen rolling their eyes at this over-the-top performance.
POOR QUALITY VIDEO.......2006-07-05
The audio is very good but, the quality of the video was terrible. Not worth the $$$ I paid.
I appreciate this tribute to Ronnie Lane & MS victims.......2006-05-05
My fellow reviewer above described this thing absolutely perfectly. But as an MS victim myself, I DO so appreciate Slowhand, Page, Beck, et al, playing a tribute to ex-Face, Ronnie Lane (who died of MS some years later.) Unfortunately, I do have to force myself to try to do the impossible and just tune out Ray Cooper making a transcontental fool of himself, WAY "over the top" on percussion; however, as a long time Rolling Stones fanatic, I just smile WIDELY, seeing/hearing Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts as part of the rhythm section here. I would say that THEIR presence alone justifies the price of this, but the fact that this concert was done for a MS sufferer and, really, to bring the public attention to/about MS, makes this DVD almost...sublime. And now that I actually own the DVD and can view it at my leisure, I, even more, have to say: Thank you guys, and may God Bless ALL of you! RIP, Ronnie. Doggone shame that Avonex wasn't available back then.
Beck - Five stars/ Page - No stars.......2006-04-28
This will be a quick review. The concerts were great - especially Jeff Beck. If you are here because of Jimmy Page - warning!!!!. Buy only if you want to see a full blown train wreck. When this concert was booked the idea was to have Page, Beck, and Clapton be on the same stage. But let me tell you something - Page was not there - he was still suffering from the ravages of his heroin addiction. He is so sickly looking - ashen colored, sweating, NO teeth, skinny and totally unable to play the guitar. He did an instrumental version of Stairway and it is horrible; he even totally butchers the solo - butchers it!!!! It is staggering to see. Page himself said in an interview years later that "yeah, I saw the Arms footage - that was when I knew my life needed to change". There are many great performances. I guarantee anyone who watches this and is a Zep fan you will gasp when you see him from the first moment he walks on stage.

Thanks for the Info.......2006-08-13
I enjoyed learning about the members before Led Zeppelin and what they've done and hearing the people they played with talk about them. The DVD includes what is billed as "The Hardest Led Zeppelin Quiz in the World Ever". It's far from hard. The DVD looks into the past of each band member before becoming Led Zeppelin. It also looks into the first few albums, tracing some of the songs' "roots", so to speak. Pretty good, although I've seen better. Hard core fans *will* buy it, newcomer fans *should*.

THIS RARE JULY 1977 CONCERT PERFORMANCE SHOWS LED ZEPPELIN IN TOP FORM. .......2007-03-08
I will be writing a review on the legendary unreleased DVD concert entitled "LED ZEPPELIN KINGDOME, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, JULY 1977 PRO SHOT" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. This legendary unreleased concert clocks in at 210 minutes, in color and contains good picture and sound quality of the famous unreleased LED ZEPPELIN DVD concert from July 1977. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary concert or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
I have heard about this legendary LED ZEPPELIN concert for many years. I finally was able to purchase this concert and see for myself if this concert was as great as I had heard it was. To my surprise, This is LED ZEPPELIN in top form and gave a blistering performance at the Seattle Kingdome in Seattle, Washington in July, 1977. This show actually took place before the Oakland, California performance on July 23, 1977. I saw the first show on 23 July 1977 at the Oakland Coloseum, it was not one of their best performances but it was a good performance. Actually, the Seattle performance was much better than the Oakland performance. Sadly it would be during and after the Oakland performances that catastrophe and tragedy would befall the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. It would be at the Oakland Coloseum where the LED ZEPPELIN CONNECTION would take place resulting in the beating of a Oakland Coloseum security guard by four of ZEPPELIN'S entourage including Tour manager Richard Cole, ZEPPELIN manager Peter Grant, a ZEPPELIN roadie and ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham. After all four were arrested, fined and received one to two years probation, their next stop would be New Orleans where major catastrophe and disaster would strike. Robert Plant would find out that his son Karac would die from a deadly virus. Plant would board a plane back to England and the rest of the tour was be postphoned and cancelled indefinitely. The performance I'm about to review for you is one of the last and remaining final shows that LED ZEPPELIN would ever perform on American soil. Thankfully, someone videotaped the Seattle, Washington performance in July 1977 and is now available on DVD. In my opinion, its a wonder that this concert was not included on the LED ZEPPELIN two-DVD disc set concert collection from 2003. This concert would have made an excellent addition to that DVD concert collection. Who knows, maybe Jimmy Page has ideas of releasing this concert at a later date. In my opinion, this legendary concert is a true testament of the power and superb skills of a band that truly played great live and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, far ahead of their time. I also have a LED ZEPPELIN bootleg on a Two-CD set recorded live in Cleveland, Ohio 1977 entitled "DESTROYER." This was not one of their best performances either but not bad either. This perfect stereo soundboard recording does contain some great moments that does resemble the performances of both Seattle 1977 and Oakland 1977. And now, without further delay, it is now time for me to take you back in time to LED ZEPPELIN'S blistering performance at the Seattle Kingdome in Seattle, Washington from July 1977.
Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary concert begins with the incredible fast paced Rocker "The Song Remains The Same," the breathtaking killer Rocker "Sick Again," the merciless Rocker "Nobody's Fault But Mine," the fantastic electric acoustic Rocker "Over The Hills And Far Away," the slow Blues classic "Since I've Been Loving You," the slow mysterious mystical Rocker "No Quarter," the slow energetic Rocker "Ten Years Gone," the mandolin and acoustic filled number "The Battle Of Evermore," the vibrantly acoustic and mandolin filled "Going To california," the soulful acoustic Rocker "Black Country Woman," the heartfelt stomping Rocker "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp," the incredible Page composition from THE YARDBIRDS days "White Summer-Black Mountain Side...," which unfolds into the legendary merciless Rocker "...Kashmir," the rare performed Rocker "Out On The Tiles..." which works its way into the Bonham drum solo "Moby Dick," the fabulous Jimmy Page "Guitar Solo...," which unfolds and evolves into the ZEPPELIN Rocker "...Achilles Last Stand," the forever ZEPPELIN trademark slow turned fast classic Rocker "Stairway To Heaven," the forever ZEPPELIN breakthrough Rocker "Whole Lotta Love," and the forever ZEPPELIN trademark groundbreaking sizzling Rocker "Rock And Roll." May I also add that Jimmy Page's guitar playing was burning hot on fire that night. Robert's lead vocals were a little strained but he still gave a blistering performance. John Bonham's perfect timing would tell the story and solidify and bring together the ZEPPELIN sound that the band would forever be known for. John Paul's perfect bass patterns would be the solid foundations that would give ZEPPELIN its powerful bass sound. Combine all four of these important music elements together and you will hear some of the greatest Rock n' Roll music you have ever heard. This 1977 performance was one of the rare nights that LED ZEPPELIN was on fire burning hot and rose for the ocassion and gave one of their more blistering performances. I am just glad and thankful that someone captured it on video.
Overall, this is one hell of a LED ZEPPELIN performance worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a devout ZEPPELIN collector or a ZEPPELIN diehard like myself.
I would like to highly recommend to all of the ZEPPELIN collectors and diehards to purchase this legendary rare ZEPPELIN DVD concert performance if you can find it. This legendary DVD concert is a hard to find gem. However, this concert is available through Amazon.com. This legendary concert performance will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This legendary concert performance is one DVD concert that all devout ZEPPELIN collectors and diehards would not want to be without.
In closing, LED ZEPPELIN'S Seattle, Washington July 1977 concert performance would mark one of the final shows that LED ZEPPELIN would ever perform on American soil. Sadly, the next LED ZEPPELIN Tour that was supposed to kick off in Chicago, Illinois in 1980 would never happen due to the untimely death of ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham. With that, LED ZEPPELIN would die with him and the band would disband and be laid to rest forever. So here's to you Robert, Jimmy, John Paul and the late great John. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LED ZEPPELIN FOREVER. R.I.P. JOHN HENRY "BONZO" BONHAM. R.I.P. LED ZEPPELIN (1968-1980). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

Product Description
One of the hardest rocking bands in musical history, Led Zeppelin crafted epic songs of grace and fury influenced by the American blues tradition. This insightful documentary chronicles the band s history--from their formation to their reign as hard rock giants--through rare photographs, archival footage, and interviews with both the band members and those who worked with them. Features appearances by tour manager Richard Cole, record engineer Andy Johns, groupies Lori Mattix and Pamela Des Barres, and members of the Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, Bad Company, The Ramones, and Foreigner.

Customer Reviews:
A cheap News stand put together.......2006-04-01
This movie has a few nice unseen shots of the band, and gives gen. history. It's cut and pasted together. Alot of coverage on the Band members girlfriends.. Not worth the money, Get the One> Jimmy Page put together, it so much better!! Or Buy> "Rush in Rio" !!
Interesting, but not that exciting.......2005-10-14
I enjoyed this DVD as a relatively new Led Zeppelin fan. It was interesting hearing about the band and how they came to be, but I would have liked to have heard from the 4 geniuses themselves. A little blurb here and there of past interviews was good, but it would have been better to hear from them present day. We didn't get to hear any of their music and that was unfortunate. A little bit of history to this great band, but lacking in content.
No Zepplin Music.......2005-10-07
I expected something like those VH1 behind the scenes kind of rockumentary but was sadly disappointed. There was no Zeppelin music during the film. No live footage and no interviews with any of the band members for this film. The only footage from band members were from old news or other sources from 30 years ago. Although this should be included, they apparently had no cooperation from Paige or Plant for this film. If the artist decided not to support it, it may be for a good reason. There must be something better out there, avoid this film!
Worst zeppelin film ever.......2004-08-23
THis so could movie was outragoisly boring....They talked about''Jeff Beck more than they do Robert Plant and all it is old english guys talkiin about crap, Sure it gives the story of zeppelin but there is no music by zeppelin , no live fotage but just pictures. I really did not like this film at all.
RARE PHOTOS, FOOTAGE- INTERESTING INSIGHT.......2004-07-07
Yes this unauthorized DVD on Led Zeppelin is void of any Led Zeppelin music but it nonetheless is a very interesting alternative perspective on the career of the band. There are loads of old photos going back to even the "New Yardbirds" era of the band that I've never seen. Also we get to see and actually go inside HEADLEY GRANGE in the English countryside where Zep wrote and recorded so many classics. This isn't your typical unauthorized deal where the only people interviewed are journalists and roadies, this has long, excellent interviews with many people who were there like Zep road manager, Richard Cole, Page's legendary girlfriend, Lori Mattix, Carmine Appice who was on the first Zep tours playing with Vanilla Fudge and more. I really liked this DVD. Any Zep fan would.
