Taking the concept of Visions of England and moving it north, Visions of Scotland is a treat for fans of the country or anyone who loves spectacular scenery. The gently gliding aerial footage (shot from a helicopter) captures the rolling hills and classic architecture of the Scots, traveling from Edinburgh's Royal Mile to St. Andrews Royal and Ancient Golf Club, to Perth, the northern Lochs (including Loch Ness, of course, and its famous ruins of Urquhart Castle), Duart Castle, McCaig's Towers, and many other points. The sights range from the sublime (a lone bird soaring over the highlands) to the mundane (the Friday commute in Glasgow). Narration provides brief and helpful descriptions of the locations plus small dabs of history, such as John Knox, Robert the Bruce, and William Wallace. The music is pleasant, both classical and regional (though the bagpipes sound slightly electronic), and what else besides the famous folk song could accompany the sight of Loch Lomond? In addition to the hourlong main program, there's 25 minutes of narrator-less bonus footage, including the charming sight of tiny sheep scampering across the Isle of Kerrera. --David Horiuchi

Seeing this video which was photographed from a helicopter makes me want not only to tour Italy, but also to rent a helicopter and see everything as it was shown in this video. What a beautiful, scenic view of Italy. The music and narration were lovely and soothing. It's not only a great watch, but probably lowers one's blood pressure significantly.

Visions of Light is not just for film buffs. In fact, if the presentation of the Oscar for Best Cinematography is your cue to take a bathroom break from the Academy Awards, then this exhilarating documentary will help you see movies in a whole new light. Named Best Documentary by the National Society of Film Critics as well as several film-critic associations, Visions of Light traces the history and illuminates the art of cinematography. It profiles the cameramen who pioneered the visual language of cinema (such as D.W. Griffith's cameraman Billy Bitzer and Gregg Toland, who shot Orson Welles's Citizen Kane), as well as the masters they influenced, among them Néstor Alemendros (Days of Heaven), Vilmos Zsigmond (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), and Gordon Willis, the affectionately nicknamed "Prince of Darkness" who shot the Godfather films.

From Birth of a Nation to Blade Runner, from Gone with the Wind to GoodFellas, this feast for the eyes spans nearly a century with sequences from more than 125 movies made immortal by the artful use of light and shadow to realize the director's vision. William Fraker, who shot Rosemary's Baby, recalls filming the scene in which Ruth Gordon's sinister character is seen in a bedroom talking on the phone at the far end of a corridor. Director Roman Polanski suggested that Fraker move his camera so her body would be concealed by a door and audiences could only see her back. Fraker remembers later watching this scene in theaters and seeing the audiences shift in their seats trying to peek around the door. --Donald Liebenson

    Description

Experience the dazzling story of cinematography as seen through the lenses of the world's greatest filmmakers and captured in classic scenes from over 125 immortal movies. Discover Gordon Willis's secrets of lighting Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" and Greg Toland's contributions to "Citizen Kane." Hear William Fraker on filming "Rosemary's Baby," Vittorio Storaro on his use of color and light in "Apocalypse Now" and much, much more. From black and white to Technicolor, silent to "talkie," glittering Hollywood musical to film noir and art film to blockbuster, this critically acclaimed masterpiece presents movies in a new and unforgettable light!

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting clips..........2007-05-27

I'm tempted to give this video a 4-star rating, but it seems that when it really begins to shine, it ends. Though there's a lot of information on this video, it covers more "recent" (60s, 70s) movies pretty fast. An update to this video (a second volume, perhaps) would be most welcome to those of us who are interested in less historical examples of cinematic lighting. If you can get your hands on a used copy, it's worth taking a look at--but don't expect a lot (and try not to buy it new, unless you're going to sell it back).

5 out of 5 stars this film sheds light on the art of cinematography..............2007-05-07

VISIONS OF LIGHT is a marvelous look at the world of DPs (directors of photography). These are the masterminds who conceptualize the look of films, behind the lens. We hear from some of the greatest cinematographers in the business. They include Nestor Almendros, John Bailey, Conrad Hall, Michael Chapman, Laszlo Kovacs, Sven Nykvist, Vittorio Storaro, Haskell Wexler, Gordon Willis, and Vilmos Zsigmond. We also see footage from the early days of motions pictures up until today. It's amazing how the evolution of the steady cam gave such new-found possibility to the art of shooting a compelling scene. The scenes that stick out in my mind include those from THE FRENCH CONNECTION and DAYS OF HEAVEN, but these weren't the only ones! It was great to hear from people who come from the world that conceptualizes the art of storytelling through depictions of shadow and light. I highly reccomend this to anyone who wants to be entertained and educated. Very well done!

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully done, but a bit long.......2007-03-12

I learned a great deal watching this video, and I agree with other posters that it's well worth watching, but I have to admit I found myself growing weary about 3/4 of the way through. I think I might have enjoyed it a bit more if it had been divided into a few segments - maybe chronologically. After a while I just felt like I was having example after example thrown at me with no breaks or time to breathe.
Having living professionals talking about their experiences with some of the legends was a good touch, although I found the huge variation in the sets and lighting of them a bit distracting... maybe mentioning who created them or why they were so different would have helped. Otherwise it kind of damaged the continuity.
Overall, though, a hugely informative video for film lovers.

4 out of 5 stars A little more entertaining than educational.......2007-02-16

I purchased this DVD to get some insight on cinematography: techniques, styles and a little history. This DVD is reasonably good at taking the viewer from the early days of cinema until the late '80s and early '90s - so there is a good amount of history shown. A number of DPs get into the specifics of one or two techniques or styles they wanted to experiment with in a certain film. Where I think this DVD falls short of expectations is length. When you start to really get into it... it's over!

The films are put together extremely well showin the history of cinematography in a very entertaining manner and there are bits of useful information along the way. I just think 92 minutes are not enough. I would have also loved some additional materials (maybe Q & A with some cinematographers).

5 out of 5 stars Light history of film.......2007-02-13

This is a lovely survey of the role of cinematography in the history of film - without being too detailed, it covers the span of the Hollywood system as well as a few of the paradigm shifting movements that continue to affect the way we understand narrative as rendered on the silver screen. It serves as an excellent introduction to movie making and a good start toward its further study.

Using the same high-definition photography and smooth, airborne camerawork that yielded popular aerial tours of British Columbia and Ireland on PBS, Visions of Greece is a gorgeous and haunting overview of mainland Greece and, more exotically, the Greek Isles. Between the two programs on this disc, the title show and its sequel, Visions of Greece: Off the Beaten Path, it's easy to find this Cradle of Civilization--birthplace of democracy, classical arts, and the jury system--not only inspiring but staggeringly beautiful. Take in a gull's eye view of the startling Temple of Poseidon, high above the blue-blue Aegean Sea. Swoop over the white beaches and famous windmills on Mikonos island, see the marble lions overlooking the site of Apollo's mythic birth on Delos, and be amazed by the First Circle of the Royal Tombs, the reputed home (and possible tomb) of Agamemnon and his family from hell. --Tom Keogh

    Description

A breathtakingly beautiful virtual tour shot in high definition from a helicopter-mounted camera. Lifting off from Athens, you embark on a modern odyssey as varied and dramatic as Greek history, exploring exotic islands scattered like stones in the brilliant blue Aegean, ancient ruins, verdant hills, rocky coastlines, and timeless traditions. The dramatic view is enhanced by a soundtrack of traditional and modern Greek music and a narrative that celebrates Greek history and mythology. With nearly an hour of bonus footage not seen on public television.
    Includes these programs:
Visions of Greece--Travel from Corfu to Crete, Meteora to Mikonos, the Peloponnese, Rhodes, Santorini, Thessaloniki, and many other glorious destinations along the way.
Visions of Greece: Off the Beaten Path--Features the unusual, the unexpected, and the incomparable. See the smoldering crater of the Nissiros volcano, ancient marketplaces, hilltop towns, old fishing villages, and much more!

5 out of 5 stars Hellas in all her glory!.......2007-06-11

At the outset, I will admit that I am a philhelene. Nor do I make any apologies for this fact. I absolutely love the ancient Greeks and have always wanted to visit the country. I may or not ever get the chance to do that, but thanks to this video I have a good impression of the topography of Hellas as well as a nice visual of many of the main attractions.

A female narrator guides us through the Greek isles as well as the Grecian mainland on a helicopter tour. All of the days they chose for filming were chamber-of-commerce like gorgeous & sunny days. The beauty of Greece is absolutely breath-taking. The soundtrack is very soothing.

There is one small criticism I have, but it is minor. I would have liked to have seen a flyover of ancient Sparta. I realize there is precious little left of Sparta, but a brief flyover would have still been nice. Again, however, this omission is certainly no reason not to buy the DVD.

Be sure to look at the special features as there is about 1/2 hour of additional footage w/out narration. If you're looking for a visual documentary of the country of Greece, you have found it here!

5 out of 5 stars Just one thing could have made it even better!.......2007-04-08

I thought this DVD was wonderful. The photography was top-notch and the beauty of Greece was so evident. I would like to point out that the whole program is shown from the perspective of one up in the sky; it is photographed from a helicopter. That made for some very grand shots, sweeping over the water and the islands. However, I would like to have seen some photography from the ground included; after all, that is the way most of us visit Greece, isn't it? Otherwise, I can't say enough about the quality of this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Feel like a bird over beautiful Greece........2007-01-13

When I recently visited Greece, and in particular the island of Tinos, which like most Cycladic islands, is mountainous, I wished to be one of the doves that fly in and out of the valleys and ravines. Watching this video is the next best thing. You can barely tell that you are in a helicopter. The scenes are mesmerizing, the photography grand. Though in the air, you can see amazing detail. From modern Athens, to ancient ruins, to cities in the mountainous north (like Kavala), to the white-washed "stacked" houses on the Cycladic islands - by the end of "Visions of Greece," you're awed by the rich and varied landscape of this relatively small country. The blue-ness of the Aegean sea is so attractive and inviting. Seeing ancient ruins from the air gives a whole new appreciation of the scale and complexity of these classic Greek remenants. This production is a must see, whether you have already visited Greece or not - and especially if you are planning to. It could well help you make your itinerary (but, you may end up wanting to be there an extra week).

This video is to enjoy the scenery, abstractly. If you are looking for a narrated, guided tour of Greece, this will not help. One part is somewhat narrated, the rest is to background music.

5 out of 5 stars video of visions of greece review.......2007-01-12

The narration is very clear and the photography is outstanding. If considering a trip to greece i whole heartedly advise a purchase of this video.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Tool For A Vacation In Greece.......2007-01-11

This video, "Visions Of Greece" is a great introduction to the country of Greece. I previously purchased "Visions Of Italy" prior to a vacation in Italy. It too gave a great introduction to the country, and an idea of what to expect the country to look like. I am travelling to Greece in April 2007 and "Visions Of Greece" should work just as well, I'm sure as a introduction the Greece. Excellent aerial photograhpy.

If you are a scuba diver and have an HD DVD player you will absolutely love this disc. I have many HD movies and Blu-ray movies but the picture quality in this video in HD is outstanding, the best of anything I've seen. I have the Toshiba HD-AX2. I ordered this disc back in Jan. and it was well worth the wait. There is gentle music in the background, no commentary or info. as to what you are seeing so it isn't educational for those not already knowledgeable. I can't imagine anyone who loves marine life not enjoying this disc in HD. I hope they make more like this in the future.

A visual feast for Anglophiles, Visions of England is the third installment of the popular PBS-aired Visions series, which applies the Over Washington (or whatever state) formula to European countries. It begins with the welcoming white cliffs of Dover, moves north to York, Hadrian's Wall, and Liverpool, over to Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, down to Cambridge and Oxford, then back to the sights of London. The journey naturally includes plenty of castles and other ruins, cathedrals, manor houses, countrysides, and cities. Even if you're a frequent visitor to England or a postcard collector, you'll be seeing things from an entirely new angle in this spectacular aerial footage (shot from a helicopter; you can catch the occasional shadow). The music is pleasant and appropriate, and the narration is informative but thankfully minimal (sometimes lapsing into cuteness along the lines of "You know, 1066 and all that."). Added to the DVD are 19 minutes of narrator-less bonus footage. Perhaps a future installment or two will cover Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. --David Horiuchi

    Description

"See the natural beauty and man-made wonders of England from a stunning vantage point

From the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover to historic Hadrian's Wall, from Stonehenge to Big Ben, Brighton, Bath and beyond, see England as never before. A helicopter-mounted camera surveys this land of history and mysteries, literature and fairy tales, castles and conquerors. An informative narrative and an eclectic complement the spectacular views.

In the South, highlights include Cheddar Gorge and Southampton. In the North, visit Liverpool, home of the Beatles, and history-rich York. In London, get a new view of familiar sights. For the literary-minded, enjoy visits to Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon and the moors of Lorna Doone. Sports fans will thrill to the view of Wimbledon, and royal watchers will enjoy a king's ransom of castles. Includes 19 minutes of bonus footage not seen on public television."

The images are amazing. If you like Great Britian this is the one video you don't want to miss out on. I was so caught up in the DVD that I will buy the entire series "Visions Of ...". You will watch this DVD over and over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Scenery Steals the Heart.......2007-01-31

I bought this dvd as a treat for myself - I absolutely love England. It's hard to go wrong with the natural beauty of England. The dvd is quite relaxing and enjoyable. The voiceover can be a bit tiresome - she's a bit overly grandiose in her delivery. The visuals - mostly by airplane - aren't quite as stirring as the "Visions of Germany - Along the Rhine" was - that one really was enchanting and the voiceover was more informative. This is still a very nice hour spent enjoying the natural beauty and history uniquely shown by helicopter and airplane along with lovely background music. It would make a great gift for someone who misses their home in England or just loves England like I do.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of England.......2007-01-22

This is the most incredible DVD! Jawdropping views of England from the air...you almost feel like an eagle soaring over England. You'll never see this scenery by actually going to England, you have to see the flyover!

4 out of 5 stars We enjoyed this DVD.......2006-11-10

I feel that this DVD was very nicely done and we have enjoyed watching it several times.

Utilizing aerial shots and a soundtrack that includes folktunes as well as classical masterpieces by Beethoven, Wagner, and Strauss, Visions of Germany is a feast for the eyes and ears. Broken up onto two discs, one 79-minute segment tackles the bucolic sections of Germany along the Rhine, while the other (clocking in at 77 minutes) showcases Bavaria and southeastern Germany. The angles caught by the helicopter-mounted camera are impressive, though at times it would be nice to catch a street-level shot or two to shake things up. From the storybook-esque castles to the pristine gardens that rival any in England or Japan, the imagery in this travel documentary is stunning, lush, and often times breathtaking. Where the set fails is in the narration. While soft and calm, the speaker's voice is so devoid of any sort of expression that viewers may be better served watching the footage with the sound turned off. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Description

Two of Germany's most scenic and historic regions unfold from a bird's eye view

Experience the fairy tale beauty, natural wonders, and rich history of southern Germany. Shot in high definition from a helicopter-mounted camera, each tour is accompanied by a poetic narrative and evocative soundtrack of regional music, including works by native sons Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner, and Johann Strauss.

Visions of Germany: Bavaria—Take a journey filled with royal intrigue, Alpine majesty, and charming villages where the past merges with the present. See the Mediterranean flair of the Bodensee, the "German Riviera"; the old walled city of Rothenburg; King Ludwig's fanciful castles; snow-covered mountain resort towns; and more.

Visions of Germany: Along the Rhine—One of the world's great rivers, the Rhine provides the perfect route to explore southwestern Germany, from Lake Constance to Cologne, with side trips to the Black Forest of legend and lore, the rich wine region, historic Bonn, the romantic string of castles like beads on a necklace at Koblenz, Heidelberg, and more.

Includes bonus footage not seen on public television.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-13

I first saw (and made a VHS tape of) this great traveloge during a local PBS pledge drive a couple of years ago.
Obviously, my original VHS tape quality cannot compare with this DVD version.
The photography is fantastic, and the aerial "bird's eye" view adds a whole new perspective to the many familiar sites that many of us have seen before either in person or through photos.
After viewing it I get the feeling that I should be raising my liter stein and saying, "ein prosit der gemutlichkeit."

    3 out of 5 stars Not HD.......2007-04-26

Although the DVD is wonderfully shot, it is NOT in High Definition, and because it is in widescreen, I presumed it was. Moral: never presume.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of Germany.......2007-02-22

This is another excellent video in the "Visions" series where one sees the cities and the countryside from a helicopter. This series covers Bavaria and the Rhine. I look forward to more Visions of Germany covering the rest of the country.

Visions of France: The Riviera—See the sun-splashed Côte d'Azur, playground of the rich and famous, from the sparkling cobalt waters of fashionable beach resorts to rugged Alpine retreats. Follow along scenic roads that curve sharply along the coast for unparalleled views of Cannes, Nice, St. Tropez, Monaco, and more.

    5 out of 5 stars Visions is a vision.......2007-05-28

This is truely a spectacular travel video. I was enthralled with the eye candy! The only sense lacking in the series is smell. The music is soft, melodious, lively and pertinent.
The naration is soothing and light. The visual quality is so crisp that as you fly over the acres of lavender you can almost smell it. Floating on the tranquil turquoise sea its as though you are there!
Before purchasing the DVD I wondered why the video did not show Paris or other parts of France but after viewing it I came to the conclussion that patients is a virtue!
I am chomping at the bit for more of this series and hope that there are years to come!
Peace and sweet dreams follow this video.

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeously Perfect.......2007-05-12

I understood from the beginning that Provence and the Riviera are not "France" but a unique section, distinct geographically and historically and accept the titles as the subdivisions they are, so do not understand some who have quibbled over what clearly could imply more in a series, nor do I understand objections to a "fake French accent" narration.

If you would yourself actually like to be a bird or glider plane or helicopter and glide over fields of lavender and pine trees, and up into the clouds with pink flamingos and sail slowly right past the ancient towns built into the cliffs and through craggy gorges, down the Rhone, into the Meditarranean and back, and see Provence and the Riviera and Monico as a seagull would, grab this opportunity.

I think even native French Provencal people should see this, as they can't possibly have seen this viewpoint before.

While typical "travel" videos showing bunches of tourists crowding into stores discussing restaurnts and hotels and places to visit have their place, this is not that at all. This is the earth, this is history, this is beautiful, and no National Geographic photo layout could possibly capture it like this from-the-sky vantage point does.

I lived in Provence for eight weeks as a young American student in my youth and took the tours, ooh'ed and ahh'ed with the rest as our tour bus rounded the narrow curves of the craggy coast to reveal the jeweled wonders of Nice and St. Tropez...but this frees you from the bus and lets you glide all over.

One viewing of either tape is not enough, any viewing is a wonder.

2 out of 5 stars Visions of France Only Partial.......2007-03-07

I completely agree with another comment - I could not believe they made a Visions of France without any footage Paris and the wine region. I suspect they may be coming out with a Visions of France Part 2. At least I certainly hope so. I also agree that it's not as well done as Visions of Italy. Visions of Greece and England are also pretty well done. I just saw Visions of Ireland on public TV and can't wait until they release that one! I could have obtained it for a "donation" of "only" $100 but, at that price, I think I'll wait until Amazon gets it.

5 out of 5 stars Visons of France.......2007-01-22

This is the most incredible DVD! Jawdropping views of France from the air...you almost feel like an eagle soaring over France. You'll never see this scenery by actually going to France, you have to see the flyover!

4 out of 5 stars A Vision of Parts of France.......2006-11-04

We own and enjoy many of the videos in this series, but found this new one of France a bit lacking in a few areas. First we found it strange to call it Visions of France without any footage of Paris or the northern two thirds of the country. We found some of the scenes repetitive and the two regions covered are actually redundant in some areas. Unlike say, Visions of Italy, we found ourselves asking, "Why don't they linger here some more?" and "Why aren't they zooming in for more detail?" It is still an enjoyable video of some beautiful countryside, but in our opinion it is not up to the same quality as some of the earlier ones in the series.

Stargaze II doesn't deviate much from the previous Stargaze DVD, and that's a good thing. Galaxies, nebulae, and other astronomical elements simply float across the screen in brilliant clarity, fueled by New Age music by Opus 27. The images are mostly from the Hubble Space Telescope, along with some unique mosaics from several sources. The bigger your screen, the better for "plasma art" that could serve as the background at a party or a valentine to any star freak. You can even view the program in high definition if you have the right media set-up. Sometimes the images float in front of a wallpaper of stars that causes a 3-D effect or looks kinda hokey, depending on your point of view. You can find out what you are looking at by activating subtitles or by clicking a menu button that goes to a page-by-page detail about the subject and how the image was rendered. With literally out-of-this-world colors and textures, the beauty of the heavens is glorious to behold. Produced the same year Congress debates the fate of the Hubble (2004), this program serves record of the extraordinary worlds that are seen only by this workhorse satellite. Lobbyists may have no better weapon to use than the Stargaze DVDs. --Doug Thomas

    4 out of 5 stars very interesting.......2007-06-11

great pictures and music, but I missing a best explanation where we are.

5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful and relaxing.......2007-05-07

Well I will give this one 5 stars, because it is what I expected. Sometimes and as in this case ''Less is more''. If you are not looking for a Discovery Channel or PBS type documentary, but rather beautiful imagery along with nice ''new age'' type music, then I recommend this DVD.

I use it as a ''background'' element when I am reading or doing something else since it is very un-intrusive. You can also play the DVD with other music sources (Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich). It is fit and OK for 16x9 format. I agree that the images and montage are sometimes grainy and lacks creativity but it is more than acceptable since the photos were intended more for science than entertainment. The music is relaxing and appropriate for this type of visual experience.

This DVD can also be very educational if you take the time to learn the menu options. But it also nice that it can be just a simple visual and musical experience.

2 out of 5 stars nice images ... poor production.......2007-01-03

I liked the images included in the DVD; however, getting information for the different images or navigating between slides is an absolute frustration. I wanted to play the DVD in my Astronomy class but after going over the DVD I changed my mind for it would have been a nightmare to move between images and display the information for some of these images. Overall, the DVD is poorly produced, BIG TIME, and because of that I am giving it 2 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Stargaze II ... Just another poor sequel.......2006-12-05

I really enjoy Stargaze and was anxious to order and watch the second installment with Stargaze II. Unfortunately, like most sequels, second parts, etc., Stargaze II falls significantly short of expanding on the photographic essay that Stargaze did; and in this respect, was a miserable disappointment.

There is so much that the Hubble ST has given to us in the way of images, I find it hard to believe that there was a shortage of images that could be incorporated into this DVD. The overlay of images over a moving starfield in the first chapter should never have been allowed. It's a shame. Often times presentations like this are the inspiration and trigger for those who wonder if a life in astronomy might be their calling.

1 out of 5 stars NOT on par with the first Stargaze AT ALL!!!.......2006-08-14

I bought this hoping for more of the same from the first Stargaze but it didn't take long be REAL disappointed with this product. Again, the video will not loop and requires navigation on the veiwers part, but what really takes this down the tubes is the graphic presentations themselves.

From the outset, there is an extremely cheesy "collage" of photos which I have to think is a LAME attempt at three dimensional vision - it's really BAD! Not natural at all.

As the program "progresses" we're treated to superimposed still images of comets, planets, asteroids and other space objects "moving" into and out of our field of vision (which is a dense starfield). This is done so horribly bad that the only justification for releasing a P.O.S. like this is that it was some rich persons junior high school kid's A/V project...which would only rated a C or a D for what was presented.

Stargaze II has VERY LITTLE HUBBLE material which may be the "reason" for the hokey visuals but as a person that just spent twenty bucks on this garbage, I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!

If you liked the first one, STOP THERE! DON'T BUY THIS TURD AT ANY PRICE!!!! You won't get what you paid for. I just wish someone out there would have given a decent description of this horrible 3D attempt and failure in their reviews cuz I would NEVER have bought this had I known!!
